Proximity Brewing Company Now Open in East Durham | Eater Carolinas

"Opened by Mike Potter — a branding professional who created Black Brew Culture and founded the Blacktoberfest festival — this East Durham brewery doubles as a mission-driven cultural hub that promotes Black-owned beverage companies and uplifts Black workers in the overwhelmingly white beer industry. Located in the Garland Mill development alongside other Black-owned food and drink spots such as Mike D’s Barbecue and Congress Bar, the interior greets visitors with sleek black walls, a long black bar, small tables and a back “living room” area, plus a shared patio for pairing pints with barbecue. While brewing operations are ramping up, 14 taps are installed (currently all guests); when fully operational Potter plans for 12 house beers and two guest taps. The beer lineup will focus on accessible lagers, pilsners and easygoing IPAs, with occasional special-release barrel-aged ales using barrels from Old Hillside; about 80% of the beer, wine and spirits served are Black-owned brands. The space extends the online Black Brew Culture project into a physical gathering place and will host community events including Blacktoberfest (planned for October 5)." - Matt Lardie

Stopped by with friends on Saturday for some day drinkin'. Our first visit. Wonderful place! The space is great - with both indoor and outdoor spaces. The tap lineup is all guest taps, for now, as they work on their own beers. The bartender was welcoming and helpful. The owner was very nice and we enjoyed chatting it up with him. Good draft selection as well as a number of choices in the cooler. If you want something a bit stronger, they've got a nicely curated selection of spirits. Located next to another great place, Congress, AND in the same block at Mike D's BBQ (so we all enjoyed some delicious eats while sitting out back with our beers). We WILL be back soon!

Gorgeous bar and brewery. Extremely knowledgeable and welcoming. Wonderful location where you can get BBQ and beer. The best of both worlds. Comfortable indoor and outdoor seating. Looking forward to visiting often. The floors, the bourbon, such an amazing place to hang out in the heart of Durham.

Went Saturday for a quick stop, grabbed a few bears among the group. The peach sour wasn't sour, the nonalcoholic choice tasted weirdly like bubble gum. We were eating as well some sandwiches we brought, and there were gnat flies all over the place. The staff were very nice. New shop, good seating and ambience otherwise.

A special thank you to the bartender that worked Saturday afternoon as I and 30 of my friends stopped by due to the power being out at ZincHouse Winery. Thank you for accommodating us, kind professionalism, and a great experience to wrap up my bday month! I highly recommend you stop by Proximity Brewing Company!

We visited Proximity for a drink, brought dinner back from Mike D's BBQ, and closed with a night cap at Congress Social Bar. Each is a short walk and in the same building, with a shared parking lot next to Mike D's. Proximity has two beautiful indoor spaces each with clean, elegant yet hip vibes to them. The beer selection was great, and there was also a short wine and spirit list. The service was quick and staff were friendly and attentive. 4 out of 5 stars because they aren't yet brewing in house, which is supposed to happen in March 2024. And it was raining so we couldn't experience the outdoor space. We'll go back in a month or two and I expect to be able to upgrade the review to 5 out of 5. Regardless, go to Proximity and experience this cool and fun area in a historic building.

Nice modern looking location with sneaky good beer. Really liked the look of the brewery and the music being played, the general vibe was "chill". Some good looking patio space out back but didn't explore it. Would come back for the IPAs alone, better than the average brew in the Raleigh Durham region.

My daughter recently took me there while I am visiting from Detroit. It was one of the better experiences that I have had at a nightlife type of outing. The drinks were great and the other patrons were very warm and friendly!Shout out to Mike ,the owner and his staff for making me feel right at home!
