Love this old, one screen only well-preserved and well-kept historic local independent theater. Despite the age of the theater and not reclining, the seats are quite comfy. Friendly, great service. Purchase your movie ticket online or in person. 🎟

Great Historic Theater. Great place to bring the family and watch some great movies. The popcorn is delicious. I especially enjoyed listening to the owner, Philip Melacon play the accordion and sing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" Thank you so much!

The first Prytania Theater was constructed in 1914. It was destroyed by fire on November 27, 1926. It was replaced at a different location by this Prytania Theater which opened on April 17, 1927. It is the last remaining single-screen suburban theatre in the state. 1 screen 272 seats

Listen. I've been all around this world. I've played RHP shows as the live cast and as a musician since 1992. The Well Hung Speakers just might be the best cast I have ever seen. These folks put their heart and soul into it, and it shows. These are PROFESSIONALS. Whether you're and old hat or a virgin, you'd be doing yourself a favor to support this theater and cast. Take it from me.

Went to see top gun maverick. $26 for two people at the 4pm show. A 12oz can of AHA is $4 the zebra popcorn is $9. They show 1 movie at a time. Has an upstairs balcony. The seats are not made for hippy people. No one wore mask. Seats are a little elevated so if someone tall sits in front of you, you might not be cable to see. Sound is good and picture is good. A nice place to get away without the crowd. Bathroom is pretty small but big enough to hold 3 people comfortably.

I go to this CINEMA at least once a week. The classic movie going experience and they have discounted tickets for classic films on Wednesday's and Sundays. A wonderful experience!

great theatre but some of the patrons are a little strange. There was a large mustached man dressed like a pirate wielding a plastic cutlas. He screamed at the film’s characters incessantly and spilled more and more popcorn with each escalating diatribe. Over all the experience was satisfying.

The highlight of my trip to New Orleans was discovering this amazing theatre. Kudos to my friend who was a film student at UNO. Before entering I was greeted by a friendly grey cat. The lobby was like stepping into a magical place with old school movie posters. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of being there. I could just sit and talk story with strangers about cinema for hours. Wish I could travel to NOLA every month just to watch movies at the Prytania. Why I became an actor and filmmaker was confirmed here.

If I want to catch a movie when I'm in town, I come here. I recently stopped in to see Jurassic Park with my mom. She's a fan of the franchise. The theatre is located on the third floor. It's changed since my last visit. It wasn't as posh as I remembered. You used to be able to have gourmet food delivered to your seat, but this service is no longer offered. However, you can purchase typical movie theatre eats at the concession stand. (I miss the Truffle Popcorn.) There is a bar with a small lounge area. It's fine for what it is, especially since it is the only theatre in the area. On Tuesday admission is only $6.

I went to see Sinners here on 70mm film. I hadn't been to Prytania Theater in years and it felt good to be back. The old timey feel of the lobby/snack bar and in the theater itself kind of transports you to a previous time, without actually being old. The place was clean, aesthetically pleasing, and the more movie was great!!

Its vintage/antique vibe and coffee bar were the biggest sell. It gives a feeling of theatre nostalgia wven if you're too young to remember the days before AMC recliners and $20 popcorn. The concessions are better priced, a coffee bar that is so underrated, and a movie experience that transports you to simpler times.

Went to see Downton Abbey. Glad I went to the first showing. The lights went up before the movie ended. While credits are being shown, the doors are opened for the next showing. Every person walking in was talking,standing in front of me while I'm trying to watch the credits. Never again.

We search out a movie to watch here when in town. Old school candy counter. I could honestly be satisfied just being in here looking around at the authentic decor. Not recreated. Huge velvet curtains line the walls in the theater. The feel is from a bygone era. I will definitely be back!

Rude employees and oversell tickets so your group will not be able to sit together. Not a great experience at all.

Love visiting this local treasure when we're in Nola. One of my favorite thing is everyone mixing and mingling outdoors in that particularly New Orleans way while waiting for the show to begin. "Hey, baby, where y'all?" - "It's all good; I'm at the Prytania!"

I'm usually a sucker for huge cineplexes with multiple daily showings of all the latest blockbusters... and yet the Prytania remains my favorite theatre in New Orleans. There's something so charmingly cozy about it. The seats are comfortable, the workers friendly, and they have a cat. What more could you ask for? The screen is plenty large, and the room packs a decent sized crowd. They do an excellent Rocky Horror night if you're into that.

A charming, easygoing, and historic movie theater. We found street parking just around the corner. You can purchase tickets in advance online, but there is a small processing fee which you can avoid if you pay in person ($11.75 for adult). Their small little one-window box office is located right outside the front door, and they do accept card. Just across are the water and food bowls for this Prytania Theatre cat that I've heard about, but sadly it was nowhere to be found when I visited :( Didn't purchase any snacks and didn't check out the balcony seats, but I found the single screen theater charming. I came to see a foreign movie with subtitles, and was a little worried about the visibility. The seats are not super sloped like stadium seating -- not the best for a film that has subtitles. The theater was not too crowded, yet the issue with people's heads blocking the screen prompted us to sit on the side aisle seats. I can't imagine how people are able to watch a movie clearly if it was a packed house. The seats themselves are adequate, nothing plush or fancy. I did find the AC rather strong, so bring a jacket! I liked that they had cups and water out in the lobby, at your convenience. Thought that was a nice gesture.

Nice to have something like an "art house" theater in New Orleans. Saw Oppenheimer in grand style with the billion dollar sound quality. So, why are the doors to the screening room so squeeky that it sounds like an old haunted mansion? When there weren't explosions, it was a little annoying that every time someone would go in or out it would sound like an old movie special effect. Could someone who notices spray some WD-40 on the door hinges?

First off I have to say that I have lived in New Orleans for over 50 years and never been here until recently. What have I been waiting for? The charm of this single screen theater is best part of going to the movies here. Everyone working here is polite and helpful, from the ticket booth to the concession stand. I have to say, the popcorn is so much better here than any other theater that I have been to. Also if you order a large drink or large popcorn you get FREE refills. Yes, you heard me correctly.... lol The couple of times that we have been here, it hasn't been packed, but the theater was about half full. There isn't a parking lot, but there is a lot of parking on the streets in the neighborhood. We have never had a problem with parking near by. Since this is probably the last small single theater in the New Orleans area, I hope it stays around for a long time.

Today I went there for the summer children's movie series to go see Labyrinth. This is one of my all time favorite movies so I was so happy to get to see it on the big screen (again, I had gone to the show last year too). Plus $10 for a ticket, a kids popcorn and a drink, you aren't gonna get a better deal! An alarm went off during the show but the staff remained calm as they told everyone to go outside and await the fire truck. After a brief intermission, the movie continued. The Prytania is just such a pleasant and retro theatre that makes for such a unique movie experience!

Went to the Matinee today with my boyfriend to see the Lion King!! We used to go here when we were little! Had so much fun! The upstairs balcony is so vintage and cute. Popcorn was awesome and it wasn't busy at all-and the LION KING was playing! Loved it! Felt like we were little kids again because I grew up in this neighborhood and we went to De La Salle ;) Hope this theatre never leaves NOLA!

Sooooo...I am in love with this theatre. It's quiet and simple, and not much happens here. The theatre is tucked off in the neighborhood and you may miss it if you are not looking too hard. As far as the interior, it's nothing fancy but it's not shabby either. There are regular movie seats and a screen--that's it. I really appreciate this theatre because of the comparisons to the bigger theaters (e.g., Elmwood, Clearview). It's very low-key and you don't experience the typical hustle and bustle of most movie theaters. And something about their popcorn is awesome. In my opinion, they have the best movie popcorn I have tasted so far. It's a perfect buttery-salty mixture. The parking is off-street. The staff is pleasant. Everything was great, and I do not mind returning!

Prytania Theatre is my favorite theatre in all of New Orleans!!! Conveniently located on Prytania and Jefferson in the Uptown neighborhood, they show great movies and the theatre is so quaint and clean, you will feel like you're in the 70s and have a great experience! Concessions are always fresh and there are plenty of choices! It's a 1 screen small theatre so book tickets ahead of time if you can! They also do gift cards that make GREAT gifts for locals and movie-loving visitors too! Highly recommend you check out Prytania Theatre!

Super excited that of all the great places I've been in this enchanting city that I was able to see Bohemian Rhapsody here. It means a lot to me. Also, I got to meet the house cat! This is an old theater, however, it's updated and very clean. I look forward to coming back here every time I'm in NOLA.

This single screen movie theatre is a classic experience. The family at Prytania put a lot of pride and joy into maintaining this historic theatre, which has been open since 1914! Their prices are affordable for both movie tickets and snacks, and they are always showing some of the best movies and throwbacks! The chairs are comfortable and it's an overall really enjoyable family experience. The Prytania team has also expanded over into Canal Place at the old Cinebarre, and I can't wait to check out their set up over there! Thanks for keeping it rocking, Prytania. #ThankYouThursday

Charming theatre, over 100 years in business. When you come here, you should know what you're getting in to. I'll get this out of the way first. Single screen, small facility. You won't find the reclining, heated seats you might get at a bigger theatre chain. The carpet can smell a little musty. Also....accessibility is a little bit of an issue. Tiny sets of stairs everywhere. Here's the trade off: you just can't beat the charm. The chandeliers, the red, the well stocked refreshments stand and coffee bar. The theatre cat (though I wasn't lucky enough to meet it!). It's independently owned, and it's fully worth spending your money here and supporting a local establishment. Can't wait to go back.

This classic movie theater is wonderful. They recently celebrated their 100th anniversary of being open. It does not have a high class Dolby surround sound system, it does not have reclining seats. It does have a cat that lives here. It is a single screen theater, and the epitome of what a movie theater should be. They show classic films, and current films. This is not a place where you can buy your tickets online to ensure seating, you have to show up and wait in line. They sell your basic popcorn, typical theater candy and sodas. They do have a balcony(!!!!) to sit in. Michelle P really outdid herself on her review, as did Ryan, Marielle and Suzanne. To reiterate a comment made by Suzanne, I am 5' tall (though I have not been here with her, she has another 5' tall friend besides me) and this is not stadium seating. I have not yet been to a show where a tall person sat immediately in front of me, but I expect that to happen at any point in time. The seats are not set off from the row in front, and there is not much of a slope. Short people will have a difficult time seeing if a tall person sits in front of them. Be aware of your surroundings and be kind to others. This is a classic theater, and I can not add anything that anyone else has not added. Just come see a movie here if you are visiting, or even if you live here and have not been.

I've been to a handful of movies here over the years, and enjoy the old time movie theatre feel. The seats are the older cloth flip seats. They show the old concession video before the movie starts. One of the things I like the most is the people. Everyone is friendly and helpful. It's a fun experience!

It's nice to have a local classic theatre to go to. They always show the current movies, but often mix in cult classics or special screenings. I wouldn't recommend the Prytania Theatre for the next big action movie like Star Wars but it is the perfect movie theatre for date night. It just has a much more intimate feeling than any other movie theatre you would go to. You do have to be careful when choosing your seat as it's not exactly stadium seating so make sure there is no one excessively tall in front of you, or you may spend the whole night switching sides of your chair to look around them. It's the same price as any other theatre you would go to, but it's nice to support an independent theatre over a large corporation. If you want to take your honey out for dinner and a movie, make sure you come here.

WORLD's BEST popcorn. I wat lunch here sometimes and it's the best. Would suggest the small siZe for one person, medium for two people, or large for three or more people.

Always cold- bring a sweater. My husband and I will go through phases where we want to go to the movies. I love Prytania because it's only one screen therefore not overwhelming and stuffed to the brim with people. Snacks are expensive but popcorn is so buttery and salty. They let you switch a soda for an icee if you get the large soda and large popcorn option.

I love the Prytania Uptown. The new Canal Place location is pretty awful. We were told parking would be a maximum $8. It was $17. And all the charm of Canal Place with its good food and great cocktails is gone. It's just a theater with overpriced garbage food and stale popcorn. $17 for parking. No thanks. I'll see y'all at The Broad.

How can you not love the Prytania Theatre? Besides showing art house and major releases on their single screen, they have Midnight movies! I was thrilled that one of my favorite movies, The Talented Mr. Ripley, was the Midnight movie this weekend. On Friday night, they even had live jazz accompaniment! How fantastic is that? You won't be getting that at the multiplex. I love their little clip at the beginning where they have the old school dancing concession items using sexual innuendo to entice you to buy a hot dog ("you can't beat... my meat between two buns") and then the gang of dancing snacks and bevs break out into a heavy metal routine expelling the virtues of proper movie behavior and what's sad fate will meet you if you don't adhere to the rules. They even mentioned that you should be respectful when opening candy (the wrapper sounds make me want to KILL). On that note, I wish the evil hotdog character would have appeared to drag out the dude who was obnoxiously snoring behind me. He started in right at the beginning of the movie after Tom, in his underground cold water flat, is testing his jazz knowledge and correctly guessed the record he was playing was Charlie Parker. "Bird!! I know this!!! It's Bird!!" I mean, if you can sleep through this brilliant movie, I feel sorry for you, but not enough to *not* want to smother you to death with a pillow, motherfucker. Also, it appeared as though someone had had a popcorn throwing party at the previous movie as it was ALL OVER the floor. No one bothered to take out their trash either. Newsflash, the theater may indeed harken back to the 1950s, but in this day and age, we know better than to leave behind our trash in a movie theater. Plus, call me neurotic, but all I could think about was the vermin that might be running around sampling the snacks that had been left behind for them. Or, maybe that's just common in New York City theaters. It's just hard for me to keep my feet on the floor in these situations. As John L H says, the theater has soul, even if it's lacking in other amenities. Oh and while they don't have a bar, they do allow you to bring in your own booze. So, bring a bottle of vino, buy some popcorn and sit back and enjoy the show!

I am so happy that this theatre exists. It is the *only* movie theatre that I can access on my bike. Went here with two of my friends yesterday to see the Hunger Games. My friend F had been very excited about this movie and the preview looked interesting, so I decided to go see the film with her. We bought our tickets in advance, which I think was a very good idea. When I got there, F had already retrieved our tickets from the box office and D was inside saving our seats already, but when we left after our showing, we saw people lined up around the block for the next showing. Before the movie begins, they play the funniest clip that says to go to the lobby and get a snack. Then we had one preview, and the movie started. No time wasted. It did get a little annoying with the people who couldn't stay in their seats, probably because it's not stadium seating, but that's a minor annoyance I can deal with for the convenient location and the cheap matinee price of this theatre.

I just love that New Orleans still has The Prytania Theatre and that it is still in such great condition. How exciting for them to be thriving at 100 years old! (We should all be so lucky in life). There's something just so special about a single stand alone theatre in the day of the multiplex that shows up to 20 movies at once. It harkens back to a simpler time and you can actually feel the 100 plus years of history when you're inside. My mind immediately Imagines young teen boys in the 30s/40s/50s saving their money all week just to be able to ask their best gal to a movie and curl up together to share some popcorn and snacks. . I often wonder where my Mom and Dad sat. Surely they had a favorite spot. I can't even imagine how many first dates took place within those walls and especially in that balcony - which must have felt very VIP and exclusive back then. Honestly, it still does today because it's so rare. I love to sit up there. Whether I'm seeing a classic like "Singing in the Rain", participating in a cultural experience like "Rocky Horror Picture Show", or catching the 3-D version of the cinematic juggernaut "Star Wars, The Force Awakens", it always feels just a little bit different and a little more special at The Prytania.

The Prytania is an old style, single screen theater. It amazes me that it survives in the age of giant mega theaters that have no soul. I went to the Prytania for a recent midnight movie. I was immediately impressed when I arrived. The ticket window, concession stand, balcony, and even the decor remind me of an earlier time. A time when going to movies was a classy affair. There is a balcony and main seating area. The balcony seemed ideal, but it was filled with people by the time we arrived. My one complaint about the theater is that it was very hot. I realize it was a warm, humid evening, but at midnight, I would expect the room to bee cool. I highly recommend you visit the Prytania, especially for one of their midnight movie showings.

Hurray for locally owned family businesses. This is a great place to go and see a film. I love the creativity in their programming. There's nothing fancy about the seating and the rake of the floor is slight but I am definitely a fan. The staff is friendly and the prices fair.

I am so completely charmed by my experience at the Prytania Theatre that I hope I can articulate all the reasons why I love it so. There is a great selection of movies in a given week for this single-screen theatre. I popped in on a Sunday morning to catch the matinee showing of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. It was part of the Children's Series, but there are also classic movies, midnight movies, & some mainstream movies. This is a true neighborhood theatre, so there's only residential street parking on a first come, first served basis. However, the neighborhood is so lovely that a walk to the theatre quickly becomes an opportunity to look at the pretty houses, yards, & trees. Let me also just say that the concession options are freaking awesome here. I'm talking White Castle burgers, pizza, chicken nuggets...all kinds of stuff in addition to the traditional popcorn & soda. I purchased the obligatory, oversized chocolate bar for this particular movie & ventured in to find a seat. I chose to sit in the balcony & the view from up there was wonderful. The space has been updated to incorporate technological advances, while retaining that chandeliered, movie house feel. Instead of wretched TV commercials assaulting my senses for over a half an hour, I was treated to sweet piano music, paired with a slideshow of the Prytania's upcoming movies. This was followed by Mr. Rene Brunet being wheeled out to welcome everyone & dish out Willy Wonka trivia for a few minutes. He also asked us to join the staff for cake & coffee after the movie. By this point, I knew I was spoiled beyond repair. The beautiful location, great service, yummy concessions, charming ambience, lack of pre-movie commercials, staff-customer interaction, & cinematic offerings have convinced me to become a member so that I can support this establishment in any way I can. I'll be a loyal patron as long as I'm in New Orleans.

A delightful indie movie theater in the heart of the garden district. There is so much charm to this single-theater venue, and the prices are exactly what one would hope for! If you can make it to the Sunday morning screenings, there is a delightful gentleman (I assume the owner?) who gives backgrounds of the films, giving them context and making them a bit more colorful. They also offer group rates for large groups, and have a mixed bag of movies ranging from old films to children's movies.

A New Orleans treasure. New Orleans has a lot of old historic buildings throughout the city, while the Prytania Theatre is nowhere near as old as places like Jackson Square and St. Louis Cathedral it's one of the oldest operating movie theaters in the country, over a 100 years old. Outside is a classic brick facade. Current and upcoming movie posters are on display. It's a single screen with standard seating, so pick your seat wisely- if a tall guy is sitting in front of you you'll miss some of the action. Of course expect popcorn and snacks and drinks. These guys also accept MoviePass which is an incredible deal. The theatre shows a good mix of films- blockbusters, indie, classics, and cult classics(weekend midnight shows). Go check it out y'all!

There is the most beautiful grey cat that lives here. An undeniable fun and romantic feel about this theater. The perfect date night for cultured couple.

This theatre makes me so happy. I love taking a Friday evening and going to a show by myself or with friends. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. The theatre itself is magical- like your own little world. The popcorn is amazing and the snacks are fairly priced. If you love movies as much as I do, this place is a must visit. I hope it stays open forever. Support independent businesses!

When you're in the mood for a more classic and old school movie experience, I highly recommend watching a movie here. But with that, I recommend lots of patience and planning in advance since they are still behind the times with certain things. First of all, parking is off street . Get here early to get the best and closest spots. Buy your tickets in advance! It saves the hassle of waiting in an additional line (on top of the line you'll be waiting in just to get in!). They take credit cards which is a good thing. If you are with someone, have them go grab seats while you purchase refreshments. Pricing here is actually much more reasonable than the bigger chains. I also noticed they had a coffee bar set off to the side. This is a single screen theater and still has the feel of an old timey theater. Lots of velvet and chandelier fixtures. What I loved was that there was maybe 1 preview before the actual film started. They just dive straight in. The surround system was fine too. Overall, great first time experience (shame on me!) and would gladly support this small business when I'm back in town.

The Prytania gets 5 stars for 2 reasons: 1. I can walk here from our new house & 2. It's a survivor. In the last 20 years it has closed 2 or 3 times and each time it was going to be torn down for condos, or a school expansion, or whatever. Each time the community rallied an new management stepped in. I wish they still played old movies and art house fare, but it is the last stand alone theater in the city.

It's been a while since I saw a show here but kinda for good reason. While I love the authenticity of the theatre the seating is a little too authentic. By that I mean it's uncomfortable and downright hurts. Now, I think that I understand the need to provide enough seating capacity to make the theatre financially sustainable but if there's a way to do both, improve seating comfort and make it financially sound please do it.

This is one of the last remaining single theatres in the country and a fantastically fun neighborhood gem. They do a LOT of variety for having just a single screen and often do special Midnight Events with unique and fun screenings with added pizzazz such as when they do Rocky Horror Picture Show with a live cast thrown in the mix that encourages audience participation. They also have classic movie screenings so you can experience Casa Blanca and MANY other classics the way they were meant to be seen. They have upgraded with the times and have a great digital video and sound system. I am also a big fan of their balcony seating area and depending on the movie/event this is often my favorite perch to experience things here. The only slight negatives I could possibly think of would be the seats are the old school variety which are a bit less nice than the new super fancy movie chairs other places offer and parking is often a bit challenging as it will require street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. I can sincerely report I have had more fun and amazingly interesting experiences in this theater than any other place other than possibly the sadly departed HOKA Theater in Oxford, MS.

You know that Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "Last Action Hero" where through some force of magic, a character played by Schwarzenegger makes his way off the movie screen into the "real world"? Well if something like that were ever to actually happen, it would take a special theater, one as special as the Prytania Theater. In an era of megaplexes, it strikes me as so odd and novel that there would even exist a movie theater with just one screen, but there's something undeniably charming about the single screen Prytania Theater. Apparently it's New Orleans' first theater, in a city that is not really an ideal place for movie fans. The screen is a decent size and the chairs are comfy. In addition to playing a single current release, this theater also shows old movies, which is completely awesome. There's no parking lot for this theater, so that's a bit of a problem, but it's located in a very nice part of New Orleans, so I don't mind finding street parking and walking over. My favorite theater in New Orleans.

The cutest lil movie theatre ever!! There's only one screen, so obviously choices and show times are limited but that's kinda what makes it more fun. I really love their speciality showings - they are currently doing a Miyazaki movie every week. Also, free scary movie Sundays in October!!

This is a beautiful, classic neighborhood theater in the old-fashioned local cinema tradition. There's even an old organ (presumably unrestored, but not for sure). The price is right - people are SO friendly - and it's a lovely trip back into the days before the 20-theater monster venues. Parking is easy, admission is fairly priced ($7 when we went). I have everything good to say about this place - I wish my neighborhood in Birmingham had one.

Luke, you are my fathaaaaaa. Seriously, Luke is a very helpful employee of this bloody establishment of epic viewing parties while seated. Rocket Man was an excellent movie about human aliens playing mythological figures. I go back to Carthage now. Thank you for fun times in movie-music-movie land!
