How Montreal’s Irish Pubs Are Celebrating St.Patrick’s Day This Year | Eater Montreal

"At a fellow Irish pub, McCarold’s, owner Virginia Tiseo sounded cautiously optimistic but still wary, saying she can’t entirely shake the fear that restrictions might return and that the staff are 'living it day by day.' For the first time in two years the bar looks like it did pre-pandemic, and McCarold’s will mark St. Patrick’s Day with decorations, giveaways, special Irish menu items and the return of green beer. Like most Irish pubs in the city, McCarold’s doesn’t take reservations for St. Patrick’s Day, and Tiseo has already had to turn away over 100 people who tried to book." - Holly Tousignant

How Montreal’s Irish Pubs Are Celebrating St. Patrick’s Day 2021 | Eater Montreal

"The Côte-des-Neiges pub is offering a special St. Patrick’s Day burger made with Guinness- and cider-braised baby back ribs on a sesame bun with Guinness cheese, Swiss cheese, pickled onions and lettuce; it will be available for takeout and delivery via Uber, SkipTheDishes and DoorDash on March 17 until it sells out." - Eater

Where to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day 2018 in Montreal

"Along with Hochelaga’s Le Trèfle, McCarold’s is something of a new generation of “Irish” pubs, with a little more TLC injected into food and beer offerings than some of the older options around town — and a large selection of Scotch." - Tim Forster

My friends and myself were once part of the furniture at McCarold’s. Our long evenings were then filled with long forgotten and unproven manly-man tales of conquests and fortunes. For the sake of a healthier liver and as family duties were calling upon, I had to abandon ship and ancre my safety boat in a distant suburb. I still go back every now and then, so to remember the good times and the better times. Set almost at the foot of Mount-Royal in the busy, eclectic and diversified district of Côtes-des-neiges, in Frenglish Montreal, the venue offers plenty of seats, with several rooms and 2 terrasses. The selection of beers and liquors is one of the best in Montréal. The kitchen offers a pretty good selection of meals based on pubs’ culture. For example the ever Oh so popular Ballymore burger and Shepherd’s pie. If one feels adventurous, the burger with peanut butter, the Edson, or the Japanese poutine, the Chuck Norris, are worth the try. If you’re thinking « lean », you can opt for a fresh salad as a side. If you’re thinking blood pressure annihilator and heart attack, side for a poutine along the burger and keep your meds at reach. Besides minding my nutrition, I just love to sit on the terasse on the side by the church when the lilacs are in bloom during spring or in the fall at peak folliage. If you come around, please do say Hi to Martine and Mathieu, the loveliest staff I’ve ever met around. They’ve hold clients in respect for as long as I can remember. I’m positive they can show you where the bar still shows signs of wear from my elbows, as years of indulging pints after pints required appropriate support and balance. Cheers to all beer lovers !

Google
I have baby guiness and cider. The beer is really good, and the cider i think it just like other places. The fries 6$ is good amount of food but i hope it more crispy. The waiter is nice and the atmosphere is comfortable

Google
Food was nice. But at the end of tonight (27/09) the female server was stood over us when we were paying the bill and when half of us hadn’t tipped (as young students) she said what is wrong with the service? Service was ok but very slow. And that if we didn’t tip she wouldn’t be paid (she only brought us our bill and didn’t serve us).She then pushed by asking if we were local and understood how tipping culture works in restaurant. Ruined our evening at the restaurant and made my friends uncomfortable.

Fantastic service from Nick on Sunday August 10. Boyfriend and I had dinner and drinks and he was so attentive. Drinks were perfect, and food was delicious. Great atmosphere. Love the classic rock. Thank you, Nick🍷

Google
Made it there at 6pm, on a Saturday, was not that busy. Variety of beer and cocktails. The waiter/waitress were very nice. The food was good. The music got a bit louder at around 8pm.

Nick did a great service. We loved it! Chris the chef makes a great burger and awesome fried chicken! Thank you very much!

Google
Got this poutine at poutine week, the taste was good, it was duck, i find the meat was too dry for my taste. The fries alone here are so good and I love their homemade mayo that comes with it. The fish and chips are good. I like the vibe this place has, although quite loud, but it's a pub so not surprising. The service is good as well. Nice pub to come to.

Yelp
Went there to see hockey last fame of the year between Oilers and Panthers. Good mood and service was good too. Unfortunately Oilers lose : ( J'ai été voir la finale entre les Oilers Edmonton et les Panthers de la Floride. l'ambiance était bonne sinsi que le service. Malheureusement les Oilers ont perdu : (

Yelp
My experience with McCarold's has been strictly through delivery via food delivery services due to the pandemic, but every. single. order has been spectacular, even the ones that take magical trips in the wrong direction... I'm reviewing their veggie burgers here, and the good news is they're one of those places where you can swap out the burger patty of any of their multiple burger options for a veggie one. Their fries are fantastic, reminiscent of twice-fried chip truck fries I grew up with, and their buns and standard addition of crispy onions are pretty great all things considered. Their food travels *extremely* well, and their packaging keeps everything quite sustained, even after 20-30 minutes of delivery time. We've ordered from them roughly 5 times and the average price for dinner for two, with tax/tips/delivery ends up being between $45-$55, which is pretty standard for ordering door to door service in the current climate. I *have* been to their physical location and it's a lovely spot, right next to UdeM, and like many places now, their poutine sauce *is* vegetarian. They have a decent section of beers and scotch as well.

Sebastien L.

Yelp
I went there for cocktails and ended up also trying their Poutine with goat cheese in and was delicious. Usually I'm pretty picky over my French fries and there they were perfect plus the barmaid was also really sweet
google avatar

Nic Q.

Yelp
This place seems to be always busy which is a good sign. We like the atmosphere and found the staff very friendly. The have lots of great beer choices and seemed to have decent menu. We went there for the Poutine Week and had The Oh Danny boy poutine which was so so and didn't look like what was advertised. The waitress told sorry and told us next time to try their regular poutine which she said was delicious

Yelp
This place gave my friends food poisoning!!! One of them was throwing up for 12 hours straight. Save your money folks!
google avatar

Yelp
After a long cold walk we decided to stop off here to grab a quick bite. Wasn't impressed with the food. Got cheese sticks with cheddar cheese. Really nothing special no cheese in them at all. Comes with sour cream and salsa very meh. Go to nickels if u want cheese sticks lol. Another thing now With the new law you have to get ur bill after each drink which is fine but then our waitress came up pressuring us to pay our bill now because she was leaving and wanted her tip. I understand how you have to leave but by doing so I didn't buy anything else. The inside is nice and cozzy and very dark and dingy in a great way.

Yelp
I had such a nice first visit here today! I found the service super chill and friendly and helpful, and I liked the look and feel of the bar a lot. Lots of beautiful wood and nice layout with big communal tables, small private corners and lots of space for the gangs of students that I'm sure cram in here. We were there on a Saturday afternoon so there was a nice mix of people reading or working on laptops, couples hanging out, groups of friends, etc and it kept filling up over the 2 hours we were there. There was a nice collection of beers, though a few more smaller local brews would be fun additions. The poutine with deep fried jalapenos I tried was tasty, good fries, and the heat from the peppers cut the gravy nicely. Not amaaazing brown gravy, but totally tasty. I'll definitely come back, I liked the vibe, and the fish and chips at the other table looked like something I could sink my teeth into...
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
What dilemma I have here. How to review McCarold's! Argh... Cute place. Typical pub decor, which is perfectly fine... It's a pub. Tasty enough food. Great beer. But.... But the service! OMG the service. Is it still called service if you don't get any? And I'm not talking a Friday night here. I'm talking 3pm on a sunday. Our group of 7 was like invisible. "excuse me, can I place an order? Excuse me, water please. Excuse my, does a fork come with the poutine?" seriously, don't make us chase you for everything when the place isn't full. It's really my only knock on the place.
google avatar

Madita A.

Yelp
In an area full of students, close to Université de Montréal, McCarold offers great deals in beer and pub fare. Where else can you get a pint for 4 to 5$ ? They serve local brews and Irish classics. It is a great place to watch a game, with quite a few TVs. The ambiance is cosy with a lot of wood. Aside the usual pub food, the chicken wings and whiskey-flavored poutine stand out.
google avatar

Daniel C.

Yelp
Came to this Pub to watch World Cup two days in a row great service staff is mostly French speaking . you work your way through it. Ordered the same beet salad special 2 days in a row day one was perfect great presentation right size plate day 2 look like a totally different dish smoked salmon beet salad and I had to ask l the staff at the give me cheese cuz it was no cheese on my salad which says in the ingredients but besides that all good consistency cleanliness and service is what we look for and we will go back to the same place over and over and over again.
google avatar

Orsy F.

Yelp
We've been there many times. The cider is really good, the foods are amazing (exactly burgers and the Cesar's salads), the amount is perfect, the guys are kind. The price is good. The only "problem" you cannot pay by card, but there's an ATM inside.
google avatar

Roxanne M.

Yelp
Went there on a Sunday afternoon for a family reunion. The server was very attentive and friendly. We all got different types of burgers and we were all pleased. It comes with home fries and a delicious house mayo. They have a pretty large variety of beers on tap and other types of liquors and and cocktails. If you hesitate on what kind of draught beer to get with your meal, don't hesitate to ask your server for recommendations according to what you are eating and even get a little sample to taste.
google avatar

Christina T.

Yelp
I started off with a sangria on the menu and mac & cheese. The sangria was perfect, not too sweet and not too alcoholic in taste, it was just right. The mac and cheese were good enough. One thing I notice from the food, it was a little dry and it sticks on the plate. My coworker didn't finish her mussels, I took it from her and I ate the rest. The mussels were alright too. I think all mussels, regardless where it came from, it tastes the same everywhere. The only exception is when the mussels have gone bad, I haven't had the experience of tasting bad mussels yet, certainly not in this pub. The other order I had the pleasure of eating, it was the Plourde soup, a mixture of seafood cover in a creamy soup. This one is alright. I think I would like it if I was still very hungry. Overall, this restaurant gets 3 stars. The customer service was a lot better than the food itself. Probably a couple of changes on the cooking will do this restaurant justice. The booze isn't so bad either.
google avatar

TK L.

Yelp
The setting is pretty good, both inside with the Irish Pub feel and outside on the patio. I thought the Chuck Norris poutine was overrated out of scale though. There's something about the combination of too-strong green shallots and sesame flavour that made it feel like a poor attempt at creating Asian fusion poutine. The pieces of soft rubber that I later found to be philly steak added no value at all. I was not a fan. May there be a better poutine at McCarold's so that I can give a proper rating.
google avatar

Danny M.

Yelp
Such a great place to relax. The interior sends you to Ireland. It's a place where you feel really welcome. The menu will for sure have something for everyone. Poutines, burgers, sandwiches, fries, onions rings, name it! I got myself a large smoked meat poutine which was delicious. For the price I expected a bit more for my belly but it was preeeeetty good. It's near UdeM and Brebeuf and right outside the metro of Côte-des-Neiges!!! How awesome is that!!! You're tired after a day at school and there's a pub right there! RIGHT THERE!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
McCarold's pub is where j'ai vraiment appris le français. After horribly-structured and obligatory French classes à l'Université de Montréal or orchestra rehearsals, or just to watch a hockey game after a long day in the trombone mines, McCarold's is easily the most well-run and pleasant establishment in MTL qui commence avec un Mc. It's effectively an annex of l'UdeM. Maybe just the faculté de musique? The downside: cash-only, and the service ne fonctionne vraiment en anglais, MAIS if you can deal with speaking French, the servers are just as nice/efficient as any pub/restaurant that you can expect to find in MTL...which still isn't very good. As an alma mater of l'UdeM paying international student fees, I came to appreciate the cash-only nature of the place as I would be less likely to get myself into a troubling amount of debt while un étudiant. So actually scratch those to downsides on second thought. As for the upsides, I'm clearly a fan of this place. They play the hockey matches, they have nice and reasonably priced pub fare (big burgers, solid poutines), et la séléction des bières gives all of them international students at UdeM a nice idea of local mid-market beers. As far as unimportant superficial stuff, the place is nice and woody and looks the way a pub should look. All in all, this remains a nice pub to go with old or new friends, to just watch a sport game of some sort (they used to play rugby sometimes!), or a decent place in the neighbourhood to grab a beerlunch. Besides, all the jerks from HEC Montréal don't make it past Tabasco bar, so you don't have to even deal with them. ;-)

Yelp
Had the waiter made eye contact he would have noticed my bright puppy-dog eyes as I teared up waiting to order. Except I couldn't tear up as my tear ducts dried up waiting for a glass of water. But alas, like an oasis deep in the Sahara, it was all just a mirage. On the plus side, that's a little extra $$$ that I saved to dry my freshly rehydrated eyes. Also never got those pub waffles.
google avatar

Bong B.

Yelp
Mc Carold's ale, beer & cider are all very tasty. I've also tried their poutine with vegetarian sauce and I must admit, it's one of the best I've tried in town. The ambiance of the place is convivial and the waiters are genuinely welcoming. It can get pretty loud when it gets crowded but you never feel overwhelmed by the noise, since the place is quite big. I would recommend it to hang out with friends but also for a date.
google avatar

Diego M.

Yelp
I've been to McCarold's several times and will definitely be back several times more. They have a great beer and scotch selection and the atmosphere is always friendly and chill. Their kitchen also makes great pub food: make sure you try their onion rings! They have TVs, but they're on only when the Habs are playing, which is great (I typically dislike TVs at bars). Only drawback is that you need to remember it is cash only.
google avatar

He L.

Yelp
There is a piece of box in my poutine! It is really disgusting. The most upset thing is when I try to talk to waiter, no one came!
google avatar

Mathieu B.

Yelp
Français après. Chili Con Carne in a Irish pub? Hell yeah, and it's damn good and cheap. It's a bar with a really young crowd somehow pretty bilingual not to say lot of other Languages. Cote-Des-Neiges must be one of the most multi-cultural place in Montreal I would dear to say.. Of Course it is beside UdeM (Université de Montréal) and their campus so it explains the fact it's pretty much always average to busy. Price are like every average pub in montreal 7.50-8$ a pint (english pint, not your tiny american ones),So it's expensive to get drunk there, but it's a really nice get-together place especially if you have friends to meet after course at UdeM. You have lot of Banks near for the ones who hate bank fees. They take Credit cards so you can start a tab if you ask.
google avatar

Raluca P.

Yelp
This is a spot where I bring all my friends who visit the cote des neiges area. The service is straightforward. What I like best is the division of different areas in the pub. Some areas are louder and music oriented... Some areas at the back area are generally more quiet for a date type setting. Very nice. -Food is good but I do not purchase it a lot due to the drinks being so good and only the need for a small snack. Their portions look huge so it is for people who prefer a larger plate! First pub where even the low priced beer tastes amazing and different/cleaner than most other bars. Definitely recommend. Keep up the good work! It shows as this pub is very often full

James E.

Yelp
So far the worst service we have had in Montreal. Been here three days. Even Chinatown Service was better as they busy but try. Here you are talked down to, not checked on, and asked to pay when the food arrived (shift change). Our server, Valerie, did not bring a water we requested when our food arrived. Food was pretty good. Environment was good. Just really bad service.
google avatar

Tim F.

Yelp
There wasn't anything overly exciting about this place, but I liked it. I visited on a Monday evening with three guys from my hockey team. Surprisingly, for a Monday, the place was very packed. It was mostly a student or new grad crowd so there was an energy about the place. Lot's of draft beer options. Prices of the food surprised me for a pub, but the service was good. No complaints. Good pub experience.
google avatar

Farin I.

Yelp
I came here once only on a weeknight. The place seemed busy for 12ish in the night. They had two rooms, and also have a terrase open whenever the weather plays fair. Staff service was fast and friendly. And the bartenders attentive. The kitchen closes at 12 but thankfully theres McD's and Timmies nearby. The only minus for me here was that they dont keep tabs and the cash only policy. Thats one of the reasons why I'm not a regular here even though I am in the neighbourhood. Crowd is young and mostly of students so I guess thats the reason why. Anyways I would have come here more often and stayed longer if they allowed tabs and at least taken at least accepted some sort of card transactions. Drinks were good and the price decent too. An okay hangout spot :)

Grace M.

Yelp
Met a friend there for supper. The staff was friendly and there was a nice selection in the menu. I chose the sandwich that was the same price as the burger, FYI. I couldn't be more surprised when the sandwich came: it was maybe 10cmX6cm!!!!!!!!!! I finished it in a couple of bites. It was the smallest sandwich I have ever seen at any restaurant and I am not a stranger to restaurants. The burger that my friend got was at least 3 times the size of my sandwich. If you intend on eating and not snacking, don't get their sandwiches.

Jessica M.

Yelp
There's one of the best burger I've ever eaten ! Go for the Edson 1884 ! The atmosphere is really nice, they offer a large selection of beer, a simple great moment. I'd recommend this place so far !
google avatar

Genevieve M.

Yelp
Close pub I like to go too. Went on a friday night music was boring though. Friends said poutine was good. However nachos didnt have much cheese mostly black olives..got a blonde beer tasting was fun to share and try different beers.

Francesca F.

Yelp
Honestly i've been there a few times and never had bad service. However the last time i went there, a huge fly flew into my drink because they left the terrace open. When i asked if they could exchange it, they refused and said they would charge me for it, and they had no control Over it being summer outside. He was VERY rude and there was no customer or quality of service. And he had no zero consideration for keeping the customer happy. Might have been the bar mgr. the server just went a long with what he said
google avatar

Seanzor F.

Yelp
Finally a bar with bartenders that know how to make great drinks properly! I had many pints of perfectly poured Guinness. Thank you!!!

S H.

Yelp
I want to like this place, I really do. The food's good, the poutines are innovative, the beer is cheap, the atmosphere's decent. But, egads, the service is *awful*. Waiters are surly and rude and act like they're doing you a giant favour to take a round of drink orders -- when you can find them, that is. And, contrary to prior reviews, this place is cash-only and gives you a stinkload of attitude when you try to pay with a card. I mean, we're not talking about a small-ticket place; tabs can easily run $50-$60 in the course of a night. I don't know anyone who carries that sort of cash around. For a business to not take credit or even debit cards, and then get mad at customers for daring to even ask, in 2014, is IMHO unforgiveable. The server haughtily informed us that it was "choix de l'entreprise". Well, my "choix de client" is not to go back. There are plenty of other Irish pubs in this city.
google avatar

Karl H.

Yelp
Nice place but very busy for a Friday happy hour. Disappointed in the service and that they don't accept credit & debit cards. Also they don't take reservations. Will consider this place for the future with friends.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
Burgers were trash salad and beer selection good decent music and overall good place but the burgers people on the reviews say we're good must not have a BBQ blah ............
google avatar

CC S.

Yelp
Landed here via the Metro on a suggestion from a local as I love a good pint of Guinness. They definitely came though! Great local pub with a good draft. Bartender made a few foo foo drinks too. Plenty of food for all tastes. Reasonable prices and a friendly bartender made us feel welcomed. Great place to kill a couple of hours. Girls-hooks for your purse under the bar. Nice touch. Recommended? YES if you like great pints of beer, conversation, fresh air, good food and fun. Just my opinion.

Andrei L.

Yelp
This place just got better now that it's not cash only anymore! They have some of the best burgers in town ... not just one or two types but several delicious burger options. Their poutines are also good! The crowd tends to be predominantly young adults/students - a great spot to watch the game or head out with your friends for a 5@7!
google avatar

Marina M.

Yelp
Lovely atmosphere, great food, good music, lively, good drinks. Nothing bad to say. The lamb burger is to dieeee for. Yum.
google avatar

Matylda K.

Yelp
We came with a group. We all ordered poutines and found that some of them were a bit cold. Nonetheless, good enough to be drank with their great selection of beers. I liked that the interior wasn't too dark like it's the case with Irish pubs.
google avatar

Nazim-Yoldas S.

Yelp
Great student bar. Many excellent deals that will considered a steal by most students around the area! Excellent atmosphere that would drown the sun itself.
google avatar

Wales C.

Yelp
It's a student bar, but it's clean and comfortable. Seating in the back is quieter and the food is middle of the road, but better than other pub fare in the area.

Zenphic T.

Yelp
Good comfort food selection and taste. Burger and friends are a must. So-so prices. Quick and courteous services.
google avatar

Amanda L.

Yelp
Large beer selection. Music was on point. Poutine bites were very savory ...but where they lack is in their burgers. Tasted like frozen beef patties. Had better burgers at your average fast food joint.
google avatar

Xavier G.

Yelp
Good place for a nice pint of beer. Lack of Irish music to make it feel more..."Irish" but still a nice place, easy access and nice atmosphere. Food is good too.
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
Had the Irish stew with a five dollar pint of Boreale. For a twenty dollar lunch it was decent, but not exceptional. The service was great, as I was the first lunch client. The order was prompt, we were served within mins. The stew should have had more taste...it was sort of meh.

Sade T.

Yelp
Horrible service. The waiter demanded that my friend and I pay as soon as drinks were served and in cash even though we saw other patrons pay at the end of their night. The service was terrible. The waiter took his time coming back with our drinks even though the bar was not even mildly busy and during our 2 hour stay he did not even come back once.
