The Hottest Spots for Cocktails in the Twin Cities Right Now

"Public Domain doesn’t have a set cocktail menu — instead, bartenders chat with customers about what they’re in the mood for, and create a custom drink based on their answers. A menu of albondiga-style chopped cheeses, sweet potato fries, and cookies with booze-infused milk is served late." - Eater Staff

Google
this menu-less bar is such an underrated spot! the idea of it being menu-less can be a little scary but the bartenders here make sure to cater handmade cocktails that suit YOUR taste! once you're seated the bartender will make sure to provide you with an intimate and personal experience! i come here regularly and my experience with, Albert, the bartender has always been amazing! highly recommend this spot!

Google
Seriously, the coolest. The vibes in this place are super chill, and Stefan couldn't be kinder, more informative or dedicated to creating a beautiful experience for his guests. For the truly sophisticated evening, this is craft cocktail making at its best. Also, yeah... the prices are high (and completely worth every GD penny, and more). Because you're paying for the ambiance and experience. And sure, the wait times may be long during most nights... because everyone wants to be here. No surprise, it's pretty great. Save money and get in quickly at your local dive bar if that's what's most important to you (I love my local dive bar, so no shade thrown), but for the special occasion, or if you want to be taken on a journey of cocktail excellence in the coolest atmosphere in Minneapolis, Public Domain all the way.

Okay if you have read any of my other reviews then you know that this is going to be a good one too haha! If you have never visited public domain better yet, if you have never been to a place that specializes in drinks made to you then I'm going to need you to grab a friend grab your significant other and head on down and go check my boy Miles out! Now the drinks that are pictured please don't ask me what they were because he came up with some stuff that all I know is they tasted good they were good and if he were to be able to duplicate whatever he did that would be amazing because every last one of them will come out something different. A friend and I wanted to go out have a glass of wine or a cocktail and we decided well let's just try this out something new and different and the video got cut short so hopefully whatever you guys get will suffice, but it was all very very good very good!!! We did share the appetizer platter and it was just enough for two people where each person got about two of each of every item on the platter and then to top it off with the drinks was just enough. The atmosphere was definitely on point the later it got we didn't notice that the music went up more so it didn't make for talking to one another a little bit more difficult and that was maybe about an hour and from when we got there around about 6:00 7:00. The coconut shrimp was so good though honestly everything was just surprisingly good The chicken they try to do I guess they'll take on the Korean barbecue chicken it wasn't bad but it was a little bit of a miss. But nevertheless You just got to try it! Now of course you're reading this and all I'm doing is just boasting but how it works is the bartender will ask you what are your typical drinks your go to when you go out if it's wine if it's a spirit if it's a cognac and from there he may ask you some other questions about yourself and from there he concocts a drink specifically to you. So as vague as it may seem sometimes simple is what works, don't overthink it just go with an open mind go with fun and a good time and trying something new. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and again hear the pictures and the little video of what we had 😊😁💜

Google
Came after a T’Wolves game/ no cocktail menu: $20 a cocktail/ if you have no clue what you want, say the notes and flavors and you’ll get something that the bartender pulls out their ass. I had 2 drinks and both were decent… ambiance is dope and dimly lit… perfect to have a conversation and intimate setting. As an outsider not from Minneapolis, I recommend this spot 🍸got to come before 9pm to try their food next time

Google
This place was really cool, myself and my girl came in for her 21st birthday. It was a no menu bar which was dope. The bartender asked us what we were feelings, flavors and type of liquor and they made us a random drink. It was hella cool!

Google
This place is cute. Speakeasy vibes with the low light and music. I loved their service and how I told them what I was feeling and he came back with the perfect drink. Would recommend! I haven tried their food but I’ll be back!

Google
Cool concept with no menu. I explained what I like and he made me a really good cocktail. Will go back for sure!

Google
The best cocktail I’ve had in a long time! The bartenders were so attentive and able to perfectly captured what kind of drink I wanted and made absolutely delicious cocktails!

Yelp
We scored a booth for our group of 6 when we got there but a line formed pretty quickly. Definitely seemed like a popular spot! The drinks and food that our group got were all delicious. I recommend being specific about your description of what you like in a drink and mentioning anything you definitely *don't* want (ex: dairy, smokiness, or certain fruits). The atmosphere is cozy and the service was perfect.

Yelp
It's a cocktail bar with no menu! You actually have to talk to your server/bartender. For example, you could choose a spirit or an ingredient to start ("I want a drink with: gin/cucumber/coffee") or give a general description ("I want a drink that is herbal and fruity/ smokey and with fall flavors/ citrus and spicy"). Them the bartender might ask you some more questions about what you like/don't like, or want/don't want and will disappear behind the bar to get to work. Since every drink is a craft cocktail, don't expect your drink to come out immediately. Instead, enjoy chatting with you companions while you pretend you are all secret FBI informants waiting to do an information drop (it is super super super dark inside of the bar). Did I mention it was dark? If you go while there is any daylight left and are sitting facing the door you will not be able to see anything because of the contrast between the light outside and the extremely dim interior. While not as bad at night, it is still very very dark. Cocktails are on the expensive side (approx $17-22) but I don't begrudge it because they are each carefully made. I have been twice, and everything I ordered has been delicious. 5 stars for quality of drinks, 4 for ambiance because sometimes I like to see people's faces when I am speaking to them. There is a small snack menu available. 4.5 stars overall.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I decided to stop in here the other night while trying to find a bar and this was a great stop! They run off no menu and make your drinks based off what you're in the mood for. The drinks were amazing and absolutely worth it but it was nerve wracking not knowing what they cost. It would be nice if that was mentioned before we get the bill. It's a cute moody spot that was fun for a spontaneous date night.

Yelp
I can see walking in how this place has so many high reviews, it's beautiful. Overall the service was great. I was a bit disappointed in the lack of flavor of the food but maybe my expectations were different. There's a cozy dim light vibe that would be perfect for a date. But not my go to spot for a place for dinner. Parking can also be a hassle trying to find something in the street but I believe they have valet.

Yelp
You'll love this speakeasy style cocktail bar. Drinks are creative and strong. Staff is friendly and attentive. Pricing is transparent - $17 for cocktails with lower price points for beer and wine. Don't sleep on their $10 small plates menu. Enjoyed your yuca fries, Mexican queso spring rolls, and empanadas.

Yelp
Laura was AMAZING! She answered all of our questions and made the experience very personable. If you ever have the chance to meet her, order the grasshopper!

Yelp
Our first time here. We waited for our table in the neon tiger room, it's a back bar used for overflow, they offer limited drinks and slushies. Once we got to our table, the personalized service was great! They don't have a drink menu, but they will make you anything you want. The server asks what kind of drink you typically go for and they concoct something for you. I said I liked smoky drinks. The waiter returned with the "Huntsman" cocktail. It was amazing!! Two of the ingredients were scotch and fernet. It was exactly what I wanted. We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Great vibe for a cocktail bar! The bartenders will make you personalized drinks based on flavor profiles that you like! Great spot for a drink in the city!

Yelp
This place just opened up in North Loop and is a cute spot for cocktails and snacks! We walked in right when they opened which I recommend as it filled up pretty quickly. The bar has no cocktail menu, you explain the types of drinks / spirits you like and they craft something for you. Personally not my favorite experience as more often than not the drinks are just okay and they don't have vodka for those that are vodka drinkers. The ambiance is dark and casual, so don't expect anything super fancy. Cute place to checkout but wouldn't go out of my way for it!

Yelp
One of my new favorite cocktail bars in Minneapolis. We went on a Friday night after dinner and sat at the bar. I love how the bartenders curate drinks based on your personal taste. The first drink I had tasted like a strawberry milkshake and it was amazing. The bartender was so nice and answered some questions we had about different spirits- they even made us a complementary shot! To end the night they wrote down the names of the drinks we had on a postcard so we could remember for next time. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Don't get me wrong, it's a very, VERY cool concept, and I'm sure there's appropriate times to go here!! But unfortunately my experience wasn't great. I'll start by saying the prices are crazy, I paid all in more than $20 per cocktail. Our server wasn't great. She asked us what we wanted, and we were hoping she'd dive in a little deeper with other questions - not just pick the first cocktail that came to mind when we noted our typical orders. The drinks we had were a mixed bag. One was super tasty, the other a little too spirit forward. Again it's a cool concept, but considering you don't pick your own drinks off a menu, $20 is a lot to pay for something you don't like. They keep the lights very dimly lit. It was a cool vibe, just be prepared haha. Nothing on the food menu seemed worth it for a meal, but if you want a fancy little bite with your drinks then you may find something you like! Again, I think it's a cool concept and with a better bartender next time, I might try it again for a special occasion. PRO TIP - If you want a more relaxed vibe and lower prices, check out the speakeasy "Neon Tiger" in the back!

Yelp
Went here during the soft opening with a party of 4. We decided to wait since it's new so we got our names on the list while we sat at other bars. When we got seated (over an hour, which wasn't a big issue) the service itself took a long time. Also, it's incredibly dark in there but some folks like that. I enjoyed my drinks fine but the server we had seemed annoyed to be there and would just talk over us. They would check on almost every other table they had except us. Just trying to get water was a pain. We didn't taste the food so I've no review on it. I think if you're into trendy stuff, this is for you. We each got 2 drinks and left to watch Scooby Doo at home. Definitely not my favorite but I would like to try it again sometime down the line after they've been open a while. See if they've improved things.

Yelp
The ambiance here is great and the concept of picking the flavor profile for your cocktail and being surprised with the drink is fun and whimsical, but it can also be a bit of a gamble depending on what you get. We had a group of 4 arrive early evening on a Saturday. Given they do not take reservations there was understandably a bit of a wait. They directed us to an attached dive bar to get a drink while we waited. What was weird was that we passed numerous empty tables on our way to this attached dive bar while we waited for our actual table to be ready. This makes me think that they are either understaffed or have some issues with flow/organization. Also the attached dive bar is a completely different, somewhat downgraded vibe than public domain itself. As far as drinks go-I went for a citrusy mezcal cocktail. It was good but the foam was a little excessive. My husband also went for a more spirit forward mezcal cocktail-his was good as well but a little heavy on the cayenne spice.

Brionna R.

Yelp
Wonderful atmosphere and great staff. My favorite is that the bartenders curate drinks based on what you like! They ask a few questions such a sweet or tart and type of liquor, and allergies and they go to work. They explain the drink that you are receiving a they are too amazing! Small detail that I loved are the ice cubes, a big plus were the huge cube like cubes in the drink and the attention to detail with each handcrafted drink.

Yelp
Very cool environment and friendly bartender! However, the website is very misleading. It is a custom cocktail bar with no beer, no wine, and no menu cocktails. Still very good cocktails with an experienced bartender, but as they are all custom, it takes a while to cycle through to get your first or second drink. A nice place to impress out-of-towners but definitely not a regular spot. Since prices aren't published; two people, two drinks each, ran us ~ $95 with tip.

Yelp
I've been to public domain twice now. I really enjoy the food, and I thought the drinks are well thought out and met my requests. Both times we went, there weren't that many people in the space and yet service was quite slow. I was seated at the bar even though all the booths were empty and would have preferred to sit there. I've also been told my some friends who went on a different night that they had to wait for a table even though there were plenty of open seats. If the service improves a bit, this could be a 5 star place in my book.

Yelp
Went to public domain for drinks for my anniversary and we had the best time. We did not make a reservation and had to wait about 30 min but we enjoyed food and a drink in the dive bar in the back while waiting. We finally got a seat at the bar and the bartender asked about our drink preferences and crafted a specific drink based on what we liked. My drink was called "The Jane" and was gin, aperol, and pineapple juice. It was delicious! It was very dark in the restaurant but gave it a nice mysterious vibe. As we left they have us a postcard with a drawing of the original space before it was turned into a bar! Such a fun experience. Parking was easy with so many lots around it and while the bar was pricey, it was totally worth the experience.

Mitchell M.

Yelp
Such a fun experience! There is not cocktail Menu, the mixologists/bartenders are amazing here and will craft fully custom cocktails made exactly to your taste. The bar is cozy, but still classy adding to the full experience. The appetizers/bar snacks were good, but are not the main reason to come here. If you have ever been to Attaboy in NYC or Nashville, this is a very similar experience!
google avatar

Jodi S.

Yelp
This place is one of a kind! There is no bar/cocktail menu. You actually let the highly knowledgeable and incredibly talented bartenders know your spirit preference; whisky, mezcal, gin etc. and if you like citrusy, spicy, dry, bubbly etc and they create a craft cocktail tailored just for you! Both drinks I had were amazing. I went with a party of 6 people and everyone loved their cocktails. The service was professional, yet friendly and warm. Public Domain Mpls is located on Washington Ave in the North Loop in the old Haute Dish building. They don't take reservations so expect a wait during peak times. They also have limited hours; Wednesday through Saturday and if you're familiar with the North Loop area you know parking has become a little challenging. They've expanded the back area to include a speakeasy, Neon Tiger. They hadn't opened yet when I was there but am looking forward to checking it out. The unique menu is curated of mains and small bites with New Orleans and Caribbean cuisine in mind. Again, a one of a kind bar! The vibe is inviting for a quick HH with the work crew, a fun date night, or girls night out. This place will become part of your weekly/monthly stops when you're out and about in the North Loop.

Yelp
DRINKS: Such a great idea behind Public Domain, as the front of the bar is classy 'speakeasy' vibes, but then in the back is a dive bar called Neon Tiger!! We went there while waiting for a table and had both great beer in the back, and fun alcoholic slushies!! Then once we made it to our table, our drinks could not have been better to our likings. This is a place where there is no menu, so the server definitely crushed our preferences! What a cool concept! SERVICE: Like I said above, the service was super nice, as your server had to take the time to get to know what you want in your drink! AMBIANCE: I loved everything about the front of the bar and even the back dive bar- a cool groovy vibe in the back, and an elegant vibe in the front. LOCATION/PARKING: Parking might be hard to find in the North Loop, but the location is awesome with lots of other bars/restaurants around.

Inaje P.

Yelp
Wow! This was such a fun experience! I don't drink alcohol and I even had a blast telling the mixologist what I like and them running with it and creating a tasty N/A drink. It is rare to have a place with great drinks and food but this place managed to do both. The space is pretty big and to my understanding there is a dive bar in the back but I didn't check that out. I would highly recommend this place for some great bites and drinks! Sorry for the half eaten food photos, we couldn't resist!

Yelp
After trying a few times to get in here, I finally got in on a Friday night for drinks! We only had to wait about 20 minutes in Neon Tiger before being seated. I love the unique idea of personalized drinks based on your preferences. The server asked a variety of questions to get an idea of what we like and don't like before coming back with drinks. You also have the option to just ask for a drink you know they can likely make. I said I wanted tequila, something fruity but not too sweet, and that I don't like Mezcal. I can't remember the name of what I got exactly, but it was basically a lime-y mezcal margarita, without the mezcal. Was really delicious and refreshing, but I wasn't really wow-ed, not sure if I maybe expected something more funky or what but really just seemed like a marg - however a very delicious one! A MUST while you're here are the sweet potato fries and dip, I still think about how flavorful and delicious they are. I'm not itching to go back, but I'd definitely go for a drink with friends again!
google avatar

Yuri R.

Yelp
I heard good things about this place so I had to try it! The inside is a bit dark so for some people it may be hard to see. It was also pretty small and felt like a speakeasy. The the host and bartender was friendly and he asked us questions about what we were feeling and what we liked. I asked for a mocktail- it was a cucumber strawberry one. It was actually pretty good and refreshing. My partner ended up getting a drink that looked like an old fashioned. We also ordered food and it was tasty. My favorite was the potatoes and the typical fries. We liked the experience that we got there. Would go back!
google avatar

Yelp
Finally got into public domain with some friends on a Friday night for drinks and we were seated pretty quickly (under 20 mins). In the past, we've heard they had a long wait but we must have arrived at just the right time. The experience here is super fun and unique, since there's no menu and the drink is sent to your table after you describe what you're in the mood for/like. This is where it gets tricky. Your experience here ENTIRELY depends on how attentive your bartender is. If they're a good listener then you're in for a treat, but if they don't get their notes right then you may spend upwards of $20 on a cocktail you don't love. Unfortunately, our drinks this visit didn't fully line up with what we had asked for (one of us has asked for something with egg whites and got a spritzer, another for something not spirit forward and got a very strong drink). However, everything still tastes good, just not as personalized as we had hoped. Pro tip - don't skip the food! The sweet potato fries were amazing, and the cod fritters were good as well. If there is a long wait, they have some additional seating in the back in the Neon Tiger bar space that serves food and slushies.
google avatar

Charlie P.

Yelp
Cool vibe and a fun idea of not having a drink menu! The bartenders will concoct a drink based on your spirit preference and flavor profile you want. They have a big variety of spirits to choose from as well. There are no reservations and there was a wait on a Saturday night. We sat at the bar which was fun to watch the drinks that they came up with. There are booths and tables as well.
google avatar

Chris J.

Yelp
We were there 10/18, their first day of business. Delicious cocktails, presented in an interesting way. The food was good, too, particularly the sanduiche. So glad the 119 Washington space is open again. We'll be back!
google avatar

Lizbeth C.

Yelp
Public Domain had a very romantic setting and feel that we were looking for on our date night. The wait staff is fun and easy to talk to - walking us through the process is a concise way that was still easily understandable, and provided us with an excellent experience with great drinks that suited us perfectly! The roasted potatoes my husband and I shared that evening brought everything together very nicely.

Yelp
My visit to Public Domain was based off old memories of the space but quickly began to create new ones that for sure will grow over time. From the time we sat at the bar a smile not seen in roughly 5 years. To those who know the space in its past life it put out truly amazing food that changed the plates across the twin cities (Thank you Haute Dish). Now the space is putting out truly amazing drinks that I can honestly say fit in with the top cocktail bars I've visited across the world. Now with that said let's discuss the Domain. As soon as we sat down our drink drinkologist asked us all the right questions to help guide us on a beverage tour with absolutely no vodka. Public Domain is a no drink menu establishment. Meaning be ready to know what drinks you've enjoyed in the past and what flavor profile your feeling. This can feel a bit weird at first but trust me it's well worth it to discuss what you like in a drink as it pays off quickly. My wife went down the Prosecco wormhole and she could not have been happier. Myself I went for the gin tour and one by one I found a new favorite drink. Thanks Stefan for a great start of our night. As this was my first visit of many I plan to update this review to help others find cocktail bliss.

Yelp
Great place for fine quality cocktails before or after dinner date night. "Craft cocktail experience in the North Loop" is their website's tagline, but I would challenge it a bit. Our bartender confessed that their ideas stem from the app 'Bartender's Choice', so there is no actual 'crafting' going on other than filtering your desired taste through this app aggregator which you can get for $5. Where the bartenders shine is in the care and quality that is put into the mixology of the drink. They have enough knowledge and experience to play with the recipes they have as a baseline. The ingredients, mixology, glass temp, and ice are top-notch, something you won't make an effort for on your own at home. I downloaded the app before I ordered my second drink and I was able to have a nice conversation with the bartender about ingredients, process, and how we could come up with something fun based on some of the suggested drinks. I was hoping for more rum and absinthe choices, but alas, I am in Minnesota. Side note: We had three drinks each. Every time we ordered the bartender kept asking if we liked Campari, despite saying no each time he kept trying to push Campari. Maybe they had a few cases they needed to move in the back? Atmosphere. The music was less to be desired for the decor and lighting. The atmosphere is such a big miss in the Twin Cities, it's places like this that make you wonder why they don't just make that extra effort to make it cool. After seeing photos and videos of the place, my wife and I were hoping for more of a real vintage lounge feel. Give me that 50s/60s Palm Springs lounge for the stars. However, the music was a random mix of billboard hits from the 80s-00s. Didn't fit the vibe that could make this place a five-star. The lighting up front was decent and had a nice mood, but the second seating section in the back where the bathrooms are located was very dark and almost non-welcoming. The service was friendly and nice. We didn't get a thank you goodbye even though we said it more than once to the bartenders and staff, perhaps they were just distracted? Overall, the price was reasonable for the quality and variety of drinks. Of course, remember this is the North Loop and it is a cocktail forward bar, so have a couple and then it's time to move on. We will be back with friends purely for the quality of drinks versus what you would find elsewhere. I look forward to pushing the boundaries a little bit more with the bartenders to see what else they might be able to come up with.

Yelp
A very cool vibe. Our service was top notch. I wish vodka was and option but the drinks were good.!

Caroline O.

Yelp
Went to enjoy a drink with some co-workers. Tried to split the group up into two parties since they had a strict 6 person party rule. They wouldn't sit our second group because the second group "knew the first group" - saying we would interact too much and "it would be too hard on the bartender :((((". Even after we said we wouldn't interact, they refused to seat the second party. If you are looking to have a drink with more than 6 people, seek another bar.

Hildy A.

Yelp
What a fun experience! Our bartenders were so friendly and knowledgeable and hubby and I both got two very different and interesting drinks after describing what we like to our bartenders. Personally crafted drinks that were both designed to our tastes and delicious. I'd give six stars if I could.
google avatar

Amelia S.

Yelp
Definitely a unique experience at a bar with great ambiance. There is no menu here so the bartenders will make you something based off of your preferences. It is a little pricey, but it is a fun experience and something a little different than your normal cocktail bar. I have been a couple times and have had different pineapple daiquiri drinks and mojitos based off of what I said I liked and was feeling. Would definitely recommend when looking for a nice night out!

Beatriz N.

Yelp
If I could give a negative star I would, honestly the greeting from the host was so off putting and condescending, not friendly and welcoming at all. Came in and walked out. Had high hopes for this place. But because of how we were greeted made leave... We walked in and said "oh, the entry was so dark, we didn't know you were open!" He responds, "the door is open so obviously we're open." And there was no one in there! You'd think you'd help to bring people in there by just being friendly! Never again. What a shame since my girls and I were referred over by Sanjusan. Will be letting Sanjusan know not to send people here from now on. Good luck with that attitude.

Magdelena U.

Yelp
The relaxed environment allows for a cozy and intimate feeling in this no menu cocktail bar. While your bartender asks you questions on likes and dislikes to curate an individualized cocktail, what makes this novel bar special is it also curates connection. We were lucky enough to experience Stephen as our bartender who not only was a delight to converse with, but brought us smiles and awe at the accuracy to our personalized drinks.

Mike K.

Yelp
Between the beautiful decore, authentic tapas style food and the best cocktails I have had I wish I could give 6x. Stefan, Nettie and Gary congrats to you all! The back bar (Neon Tiger maybe?) slushy's are soo delicious and dangerously easy to drink!

Bridget D.

Yelp
Were not very accommodating for having 7 people. Sat at a table comfortably with 7 and was told the policy only allowed 6. When asked for a bigger table were offered no alternatives and had to leave.

Antoinette G.

Yelp
Best food ever! Best experience ever! The chef is amazing, and the bartender can create any drink to your liking highly recommend this place. It was fun, and.very delicious! Exceeded our expectations!

Hugh H.

Yelp
The drinks were very creative and tasty, the food was very good. Wasn't sure what to expect but I was impressed with the quality of everything, drinks, food and service.

Taylor K.

Yelp
the staff himmed and hawed on whether or not they could seat a group of 10 between two booths (5 at each booth). it was so uncomfortable and we couldn't have felt more unwelcome. the bar wasn't even busy and it took them a full 5 minutes to decide if they could seat us. we then asked if the candle could be relit and he asked who knocked it over - rude? then my friend handed his girlfriend a water in a plastic cup and the server scoffed, grabbed the water, set it on the bar, and said we do water service up here. and in conclusion my friend said her drink preference was vodka and instead of saying they don't serve vodka he said yeah ok so do you want gin tequila or rum. overall so weird, rude, and a waste of time and money.
