My husband and I went to Public House La Jolla on Friday night after visiting a show at a nearby art gallery. It was my second time there, but the first time, I picked up takeout only. Friday night was a cold night, and luckily we were given an available seat in the small indoor area, as most of the seating seems to be outside. Unfortunately, the inside was totally open and didn't feel heated at all, so I kept my coat on the entire time.
There were tons of things that sounded good on the menu. I had a difficult time deciding. Finally, I decided on the grilled mahi mahi tacos and my husband chose the pork belly burger. For a starter, we shared the ahi poke tower. The ahi poke tower was excellent. It had an amazing flavor. The fish was fresh and the sauce they used worked very well. The tacos were good too. They were served a la carte, but since they are bigger than most fish tacos, two was plenty for a dinner. My husband liked the burger, but was slightly disappointed as he stated that all the flavors described on the menu weren't there.
I was disappointed with the wine menu. I don't drink beer. It was a cold night and there are only about 4 or 5 red wines on the menu. My husband chose the cabernet that he enjoyed, but it was $25 for a shallow pour. I ordered one of the two Pinot Noirs, and it was drinkable, but not very good, especially for $15. I had a glass of the other Pinot Noir afterward that was much better for $16.
All in all, I think this is a place for a warm evening, and probably much more geared for beer drinkers. The food is good, but not memorable. Staff is very friendly. Prices are a bit higher than they should be, though everything is expensive these days.
It's a decent place, but not somewhere I would specifically make plans to return to.
