"A bi-level market that blends a mall-like food court with restaurant incubation, offering variety under one roof and serving as a useful one-stop spot for sampling different vendors." - ByAndrew Knowlton

**This review is for The Frying Dutchman** As other reviewers have mentioned, the Public Market House has a great variety of local foods, but the downside is that each vendor runs their own hours, making it challenging to have the full range of options when you visit. We wanted to try Mr. Tuna or YardiTing, but both vendors were closed at the time. We settled on The Frying Dutchman (located on the second floor). Both of our meals were “just ok.” My sister had the mapo poutine and the “fries” corndog. I had the curry fried chicken, the “panko” corndog, and the “ramen” corndog. I thought the curry fried chicken was the best. We over-ordered because we wanted to try a bit of everything, as this was our first time having Korean corndogs. But really, one order of corndogs or fried chicken is enough for lunch because the food is heavy and greasy. I did like the “pick 2” option for the corndogs because of the variety offered. The price point is good for the amount of food received. I recommend checking out the Public Market House, but I wouldn’t go back to The Frying Dutchman. Based on the reviews I’ve read, there are better options available - if you're lucky enough to show up at the right time.

Terrific selection of food to choose from. Make sure to visit upstairs.

Google
This place is all right. They have a handful of different vendors and food places and there's a dining space upstairs. You would think this place would be packed and there'd be a whole bunch. More people in the weekends but always seems to be quiet and not all the vendors seem to be open at the same time.

Google
Really loved this food court for its great international selection and the general quality of its vendors. Hope it thrives for a long time to come.

Google
Lots of great variety and a very local feeling. My favorite things are the Maine squeeze and the pizza spot. Excellent place for a lunch stop during the workday. Happy to see new places coming in and looking forward to the final renovation to be complete!

Google
Great selection of food. I had chicken phone and my niece had grilled cheese tomato soup. Both were very good and served quickly. Best place to satisfy a variety of tastes without breaking the bank.

Google
Awesome variety of local foods. Only downside I have is each vendor seems to run their own hours. Everyone in my party loved the crepes. Sweet rice with fruit was great, as was the soup. We were there 7ish on a Fri night and many vendors were closed. You have to get a token to use the restroom, which you can get from where you buy your food, or pay a quarter.

Google
The stores in here are nice but the flow of the "market house" is broken. They used to have a large facility and plenty of space. Now trying to eat at one place and you could be sitting in another's dining area. And they are pleasant to let you know. Places stacked on top of each other like a trailers in "Ready player one." Again the places inside are great, but to know they basically pay the equivolent to an HOA fee to have such a small space regulated so poorly, I cant pay their exuberant prices.

Yelp
Portland Public Market House is a small little place for a handful of eateries if you are looking for lunch or an early dinner. There is only a small amount of vendors that are in this building. I came by the Portland Public Market House with my husband for lunch on a Thursday afternoon, before noon. We ended up going upstairs and decided to get some clam chowder at Kamasouptra (fun name right?). I would definitely come back to have soup at Kamasouptra for sure. But the building here itself doesn't really offer than many eateries and think this place has so much potential. I think there should be more seating though for those patrons that wish to dine in.

Yelp
The three star accolade for the myopic disregard of what I consider now to be a entire group analytical; I provide the rating in the same regard as the top indicator. With that said I recognize their ability with progress and remain one level below any superior perspective from my view of it. I own my frailty, so much that I decline to say that I completely forgot about the public market for in the moment consideration for destination. I had the salt and e'erthing fried calamari. I don't know what I ate I was so enchanted with finishing; only to be felt remiss for having only the memory of having had the food. Every crumb of the plating consideration eating the wrapper that shielded the utopia. Amd the fries was the part! Kidding. But yeah! And a Coke, all for under I don't care what the price is; I'll have two at half the price for the sentiment expressed as value.

Yelp
We were a bit disappointed upon our visit here. It's tucked into a corner and once we found it every business inside was closed even though the sign in front of the stand stated they were open. Mr Tuna was open and I will post my review of them separately as they deserve 5 stars. Unfortunately I have to recommend not to waste your time on this venue for now.

Yelp
This review is soley for the Portland Public Market as a public space, and is NOT in any way, tied to the business owners who rent the spaces within. Super disappointed with my recent stop at the PPM. It was a Saturday, and at least half of the food counters were closed. I know that two large High Schools use this place as their off campus cafeteria during the week which is super cool, but...it left the public spaces here feeling like an abandoned school caf; stark, faded, and slightly dingy with no ambience. Sad to see this space that could be a thriving foodie hub looking and feeling so worse for the wear. The food counters that were open though, were turning out some good stuff, and there was plenty of seating. We got some szechuan noodles in an excellent sauce upstairs, and three sushi handrolls downstairs.

Lynn H.

Yelp
We were there at lunch time on a Friday, during the hours posted by the individual eateries but only one place seemed to actually be open. The workers there, Mr Tuna, were very friendly, every other worker in the building refused to make eye contact. It was very strange. We chose the public market so that the 6 in our group could get different lunches and we could still eat together, it was a let down. We left and found somewhere else to go. We didn't eat at Mr Tuna, this review shouldn't reflect on them. I love Portland and expected a tiny version of Boston Public Market but it was a building full of booths with only one doing business - disappointing.

Yelp
We used to pop in here every visit to Portland. Now that our home is Denver, we had not been in in a while. My two favorite stores are gone now. The cheese counter which was amazing is ansent, so is the libation purveyor. Those businesses were amazing, really sad to see them go/move? They have more downstairs seating now, because that was where the boutique liquor store was. I have not tried the restaurants, but there are a variety of choices. Sandwiches Pho Soup Smoothies Etc

Yelp
This place is really great and I'm sure it fills a void in Portland. The building is on the older side though, but even so, we were surprised at the lack of outlets and the bathroom only on one floor, plus seating is tough. We appreciate all the options, especially the international stalls, and plan to stop in when in Portland again.

Yelp
The Portland Public Market is host to many eateries and boasts a great selection of foods, flavors and friendly faces (alliteration is fun). Now that I work downtown, it's one of my go-to places for lunch or to grab a snack or drink. I love that it's in the center of Monument Square, and makes the city feel a little more city-like (instead of a big small town). For a little market - it offers quite a lot! On the first floor you can find a bakery, pizza, cheese shop/deli, and a liquor/convenience store. There are two staircases (front and back of market) leading upstairs, where you can find a salads, burritos, cupcakes, coffee, smoothies, and soup/sandwiches from several purveyors. Downstairs can get a little crowded, and is mostly grab-and-go. Upstairs there are a handful of picnic tables if you want to stay a while. The view from the upstairs window offers great people watching! It's a great place to pop in for a quick snack or lunch. With so much to offer, it can be a nice compromise for picky friends in a group. So glad this place exists!

Yelp
This place is Awesome! I have now been here 4 times in the last few months! I will now be making a point to stop by for snacks and Lunch every time I am in the neighborhood! They have Big Sky Bread Company, Maine Squeeze. Cafe Crepe on the ground floor. Ameera Bread, Pho Company, Maiz, Daily Greens and Kamasouptra on the second floor! I am always greeted with smiles and eagerness to fill my order quickly! There are now seats on the first floor too! Great food options for all!

Yelp
Great indoor collection of good food and beverage offerings for everyone's palate. Thus, if you're with a party of people who don't want to be separated but have diverse ideas on what to eat, this is your go to spot. The downstairs area seems to be more traditional lunch fare like sandwiches and pizza, a market area with things like chips and snacks, and a whole lot of people standing around waiting for or to place their orders. Go upstairs, and it's a different vibe. It seems calmer, but it has more choices. Soup. Burritos. Salad. Coffee. Cupcakes. Smoothies. A vendor for each of the aforementioned? Wow. That's pretty special! I bet the soup is amazing when it's not summer weather or if you just want soup. The most popular places were definitely downstairs, but upstairs, the smoothie shop, Maine Squeeze, was mad crazy busy. The menu is huge, so know what you want to avoid having the staff stare at you in kindly but mild annoyance. The cupcake shop was a small space, but they had some gluten-free and some vegan cupcakes (1 of each, I think). There is also some seating up here, so you can get a smoothie, a salad and a cupcake and sit down to enjoy.

Yelp
Fun place to browse as well as grab lunch. We bought a six-pack of various Maine beers and some cheese from the cheese vendor. So many good things to choose from. Good selection of beer/wine, excellent cheese assortment. They focus on local, and that's awesome. The fresh food and bread looked great, but we just didn't have the time to eat there. If you are visiting, it's a fun place to visit. If I was a local, I'd shop here often.

Yelp
Can't review this place because they are CLOSED ON SUNDAYS. I trekked over there in the pouring rain and even though this website says they're open. They're not. Please update your social media. So annoying.

Tracy P.

Yelp
We came during lunch time and most of the shops were closed. Only the sandwich shop downstairs was open and 2 other shops upstairs. We ordered 3 various sandwiches; albacore tuna, peanut butter jelly, Italian panini, and a chicken Caesar salad but they gave us a chicken sandwich instead. Honestly, it was nothing special. Something I could have made at home for a fraction of the cost. The breads weren't even toasted. Just plain bread. We had to pay $5 for parking and they don't validate. This place is more for the locals grabbing a quick lunch if they worked downtown but not a tourist spot.

Yelp
This place is a 0 now.. no more deli no more cheese ... forgot it! Past reviews are out of date.. place is now more than a well worn smoothies spot.

Yelp
When I heard Mr. Tuna set up shop here I looked up more info and realized I have been missing so much! Great location with parking practically next door. There is any and everything you could want inside. Sushi, pizza, salad, baked potatoes, empanadas, arepas, pho, I could go on and on! We ordered a pork arepa from Maiz and was totally blown away by how delicious and different it was. We also ordered a chicken samosa from Ameera that was fresh and flavorful. We were intrigued by the "build your own potato" stand.. how unique! We will absolutely be back for more. I can't believe we didn't know this was here. I can't wait to go back for some pho or a slice of pizza. (I was a little bummed Pie in the sky was closed, but I was so full I wouldn't have been able to try it anyways) I definitely recommend this place because there is something for everyone!

Yelp
The Public Market House is sure to please any inner food-lover's needs. They have a wide collection of various artisan foods - sweets, beverages, coffee, sandwiches and my favorite section: the cheeses. Came here with the Maine Foodie Tours and I was immediately blown away at their variety of cheeses locally and around the world. Our lovely host gave us a lesson on cheese-making and how the entire Maine community supports local farmers/small businesses. They have several award-winning cheese-mongers from Maine! (On a national competition level!) From the tour we tasted a multitude of cheeses: goat cheese, shroud water tomme, brie, manchego and much, much more. Plus we ate smoked pickles which were pretty devine too.And we sampled Cajeta Whey which I bought a jar of. (Tastes like caramel a bit.) Aside from the delicious samples from the cheese department, there's so much more to the Portland PMH. You can find some really unique items here and everything seems so fresh/high quality. Whether you're doing a wine & cheese night, making a charcuterie board or just simply looking for a place for lunch, this is a great place to check out in the Portland, ME area.

Yelp
Coffee shop upstairs was the bomb.com. actually went twice within 5 hours. Coffee was good, lots of options, easy to order and the menu was easy to read for regular people, unlike the place not far who's workers seemed put off if you didn't know what something was. You need to pay a quarter to use bathroom unless you buy something, then they give you a token. Great spot for lunch too, lots of choices.
google avatar

Helena S.

Yelp
Definitely nothing noteworthy from the outside; at first I was a little annoyed that my sister wanted to venture in (We were on our way to a coffee shop. When I decide I need coffee, I need coffee. Finito. No diversions). This diversion, however, was well worth it. Inside, a host of different merchants sharing the same (lackluster) space: fancy cheese (oh la la!), bread (yum!), and local products. It was fun to browse through the local beer and foodstuffs (I get teased in Chicago for liking beer flavored with blueberries. It's been nice to find kindred souls in Maine). Only disappointing purchase was the taffy that came in a box with a lobster on it. Stale as heck. However, I accept fault for that for purchasing something no self-respecting resident of Maine would ever buy.

Yelp
The Portland Public Market is a strange place to visit for Portland raised twenty-somethings. The child of the original and uniquely weird public market which shut down a decade ago, the new market seems to be an attempt at preserving some of the original market (why did it close anyway)? Anyway, the current public market is still worth a visit. It seems silly to say this about food vendor in the middle of the old port, but it seems more...local, and less...touristy than a lot of the old port. The upstairs (I heard a rumor that tourists can't climb stairs) especially seems to be a meeting point for locals, but all in all, this gem seems largely passed by by our not-downeast-friends. I've seen shops come and go in the space over the years, but you can find sandwiches, dessert, coffee, and a niche brewery or vegetarian cafe all crammed together in this little piece of Maine. My personal favorite is Karmasouptra for a big bowl of soup on a fall day. As I mentioned things are a little crammed- not a ton of seating and selection fatigue is possible if you don't know what you want. Bathrooms are coin operated (put in a coin to turn the handle) which is a hassle for patrons. I understand needing to not let ne'er-do-wells into the establishment, but I find it frustrating when I really gotta go. You can get a free token from the vendors, but again it's an extra step just to whizz. A good spot for a group with a smaller budget and a lot of tastes. It's cool to see a little bit of Portland Public Market preserved! I hope I can take my kids/nieces/nephews here someday and tell them about the market.

Yelp
Get: ~meat and cheese samplers! They go for $1-$3 each, vacuum-packed, great for picnics and for those who can't make decisions. Lots of other cheeses, meats, prepped foods. You can also get sandwiches made as well. Service was friendly.

Yelp
This place is crazy! Right in the heart of town and super busy with people everywhere. Inside, it's a mad house so you have to know where you're going or else you could end up just waiting around. Upstairs, there is a bunch of small food shops ranging from desserts/sweets and juices to salads and mexican. Downstairs, there is a very cool beer shop with tons of craft beers as well as a cheese shop and a sandwich place. I got a turkey sandwich and a "fancy" PB&J sandwich which were both good, if maybe a tad overpriced for what I got. The PB&J in particular, I was expecting to be blown away but the fillings were quite meager and the bread was kind of stale. Still, the turkey was good and the cheeses were exquisite as well. A nice place to stop by and grab a quick lunch during the day. More of a pick-up and take to go type of situation though unless it's only a few of you, then there's a small seating space upstairs.

Yelp
**UPDATED** NEW 2ND FLOOR Great space upstairs, including an additional sandwich shop, pizza shop, soup shop and coffee shop. Many places to sit, games to play, couches to sit and read at and wifi. Elevator installed to take you up to 2nd floor. A fantastic addition to Portland's Monument Square area.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little market place. Really like it went twice during a week. Really like the sticky sweet and smoothie place upstairs. The crepes and pizza look and smell so delicious however my friends and I didn't get to try it. Maybe next time! They have lots if liquor and wine to choose from, even a few sake options. They sell sodas too like good blueberry sodas. They have good falafel up on the second floor vendors too. Would definitely go again if I get the chance. Totally recommend others to check it out and try some foods there.

Yelp
The Public Market is my go to lunch spot during the work week. I treat myself to lunch once a week, usually on Friday's and like the different kinds of selection. For salads, there's Daily Greens, which is literally one of the only places in the area that you can get a salad. I find that ridiculous, but I appreciate the ability to customize it. During cold winters, or just whenever you really want soup, Kamasouptra definitely cannot be beat. The specials are usually pretty good, and it comes with a nice roll to dip your soup in. My fave is the Grilled Cheese Tomato Soup Soup. For those who have a killer sweet tooth and don't want to hike all the way up to East End Cupcakes, there's Love Kupcakes, which is all handmade and has a variety of gluten free options. Great flavors too! Overall, the Public Market is a solid choice for lunch in Portland, though it's not somewhere I would seek out for lunch outside of the work week.
google avatar

Don W.

Yelp
This is a cool place. Lots of interesting food items to buy on the ground floor and upstairs has a big area to eat. If I worked nearby, I'd want to eat here all the time but I'd probably discover that I wasn't the only one who felt that way.

Yelp
Last week was an outdoor art show on Congress Street. My spouse was having back issues, so he sat here. He was able to cobble together a small meal, snacks and fluids while he waited for his art-starved wife. Then I sat down with him and watched people from the window. Taking his queue I got lemonade from one stand and a chocolate chip cookie from another. I like that there is something for everybody there.
google avatar

Joanna B.

Yelp
We expected a public market like Boston's or Philadelphia's so we were very disappointed by this sad, grubby food court. Not at all worth a visit.

Lisa S.

Yelp
I love the Italian panini sandwich in the place on street level. Just a half of one is huge! Try it. You will love it!
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
I thought there would be more than just soup, salad sandwiches, but I guess it caters to the business lunch crowd and prob does very well, but hey there was a wine store inside so that made me happy!! Also I was disappointed with the cupcake selection , not much to pick from and that's al they sell there?! I am a sucker for a good panini though so i will try that next time I'm in town
google avatar

Marci P.

Yelp
Disappointment. Not everything listed was actually open and there is no pizza on weekends. Huh??
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
I See alot of reviews that look like the vendors there wrote them , What I've seen there was very pricey tree hugger foods..for example "LOCAL LONDON BROIL" beef 9.89 per Lb. Now come on...They must have flown these cows from London First class for a price like that...$7 or 8 dollars for a burritto? This place is not for your average joe looking for a deal for lunch unless you want to cash in a CD or a IRA, but yes they have a ATM " your going to need it"
google avatar

Lola N.

Yelp
I only was on the 1st floor, but local bakery, little liquor store, fancy cheese and meat shop, the whole thing is pretty adorable. And quite cheap compared to what you'd pay for the same in a big city. For just over $70: 1 bottle sparkling white wine, 1 bottle Prosecco, 1 chai chocolate bar, 1 lb 5-yr-aged cheddar cheese, 1/2 lb manchego-like fancy Spanish cheese, 1 lb date-walnut cake, 4 tiny local organic eggplants, 1 loaf honey wheat bread from local bakery, 1 rather delicious italian sandwich half of which I am saving for dinner. Not super cheap, but still probably cheaper than you can find this stuff anywhere else. I'll be back.
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
great stop for a quick and reasonably priced lunch for everyone in the group. I had a spinach burrito from Granny's Burrito and my parents each had a soup from the soup shop. I wish there was a place like this back home so I could go for lunch, or to stop at the market before heading home to make dinner.

Lauren M.

Yelp
I recently started a new job in Portland, and I happen to be stationed only a minute's walk away from this lovely place. My goal is to grab a bite or drink from each of the stands and in only a week and a half of being here, I've already tasted 6 of the 10 or so places in the market. Thus far I have enjoyed a guacamole and a spicy mango chicken quesadilla (Granny's Burritos, upstairs, cash only), a Faster than Light green smoothie (Maine Squeeze, upstairs, a HUGE variety), a lemon rosemary cupcake (Love Kupcakes, upstairs, card only at the time, features vegan and gluten free options), butternut squash soup (Kamasouptra, upstairs, hefty variety) both sunflower and cranberry sourdough bagels (Big Sky Bread, downstairs, also offering soups and sandwiches), and a ham, cheese, and veggie wrap from K. Horton specialty foods (downstairs, equal parts deli and specialty food shop). I have yet to experience poor service at any of these establishments. Everything is made fresh or can be purchased refrigerated daily in most of the locations, which is a big plus as it not only allows me to support local business, but it keeps me from running through Taco Bell or Wendy's after work. As it is a small location, the crowded atmosphere during peak lunch hour is to be expected. All in all, a worthwhile jaunt for a quick lunch in the city.
google avatar

Vincent H.

Yelp
Neat spot with a few shops inside so there's a variety of choices with ample seating inside. The fact that it was two stories was nice since you can see outside through the windows.
google avatar

Derek A.

Yelp
It isn't in a space that is as spectacular as it was, and there's a few less vendors, but the couple that are there are just great! Whenever we go to Maine, we try to make a stop here and take a look through the beer and wine selection, and then browse the amazing cheese assortment. Sometimes we make ourselves a little picnic lunch and find someplace along the water to eat it, or buy a sandwich from the Big Sky Bread company and have lunch. On a cold day, that picnic can happen in your car on the top level of a nearby parking garage, which will give you a nice view of the harbor!! This is one of those little hidden gems that everyone should know about!!
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
If you're visiting Portland, no reason to go here. The few shops and food stalls are good, but nothing to write home about. Don't expect it to be like the real public house of your dreams and imaginings. If I worked nearby, though, it'd be something that'd make a great lunch spot.
google avatar

Ashley M.

Yelp
The white bean and kale soup is absolutely to die for! I could eat it every day. For some reason the mall seems to have salted rolls and the ones at the public market are not. I probably don't need all the carbs, but worth the trip to the mall for the salted roll! Soooooo delicious

Yo M.

Yelp
The cheeses from this store pleased one picky Frenchman and his friend. I haven't been able to independently please his palate yet with my cheese choices so I was surprised that these went down so well. The bakery was closed. Which was a little silly and the guy on the wine side admitted he knew nothing about the wines. Ho hum.

Rose P.

Yelp
This market is really nice. It is a food court with restaurants that care about ingredients. The food is delicious. You can get delicious pizza, salad, burritos, soup. A nice selection. There is also a market with a great selection of cheeses.
