Imperial Temporarily Closes Amid Social Media Claims of Toxic Work Culture, Harassment | Eater Detroit

"This location operated by the same restaurant group has been implicated in the broader wave of complaints that surfaced across Facebook, Instagram, Yelp, and Reddit, with current and former employees alleging systemic racism, sexual harassment (including accusations involving a co-owner, Jeff King), and a generally toxic workplace culture where staff concerns went unaddressed. Owners say they were surprised by the public allegations, are investigating the claims, and point to prior measures such as in-person sexual-harassment training, a confidential reporting email monitored by an acting HR contact, and follow-up processes—yet the controversy has nonetheless prompted multiple resignations and the temporary closure of the group’s social media channels while inquiries continue." - Brenna Houck

First time at Publik House and I was pleased with my experience! I went in a Thursday night and the spot was packed but I was seated without issues. Great vibes & friendly atmosphere. For dinner I ordered the burger with truffle fries, both good on flavors. Also ordered the brisket and this was a generous portion. It can be shared for sure! I’ll definitely dine here again!

We found Publick House about five years ago after my wife saw an Instagram post of some fries that looked too good to pass up. We went once and got hooked. Ever since, this place has never disappointed. The service, the food, the drinks, everything is consistently excellent. The bar is impressive with a wide selection of spirits, rums, beers, and more. The burger is one of the best I have ever had and the duck dishes are full of flavor. During the summer they open the patio terrace and serve a variety of brunch plates and drinks. They also rotate the menu every few months which keeps things fresh and exciting. If you are anywhere near the area and want a reliable spot with amazing food and great vibes, Publick House is a must. I totally recommend it.

We absolutely love it here. The food is so good and the menu is ever changing. Service is top notch and the menu is unique with a savory edge. I’ve never had a bad dish. I’d recommend this place for date night or a special occasion.

Google
I just had dinner here during their happy hour. Jason the bartender did a great job. I had the "Our Old Fashioned" for $11 on happy hour and their special Negroni for $13 plus the $12 burger and fries on happy hour. The only negative was the 3% charge for using credit card. That has to be the tackiest thing a restaurant owner can do. It's a cost of doing business. But let's set that aside. It was a first rate dinner and drinks on my business trip.

We love coming to Publick house. The food and service are always incredible. We went in on a busy brunch day and Jeneva, Nick and the rest of the staff were outstanding while juggling a lot! So appreciative of the amazing service and of course the delicious food! Can’t wait to go back!

First visit to Publick House!! Made reservations day prior- only availability was 515pm or after 8pm We arrived for 515pm OMG! The amazing aroma of deliciousness as we walked on the sidewalk to enter the restaurant! Great vibes and energy!! Warmly greeted and seated! Awesome music selection! Our Server Fred C was fantastic! He knew the menu well. Answered our questions! Appreciated his recommendations! Absolutely loved my LET'S GET FIGGY cocktail— WITH IT FIGENZA FIG VODKA, ELDERFLOWER, LEMON, CINNAMON!! Cheers!!! As we waited for our appetizers, entrees and dessert- Saw the other Servers bringing out beautifully plated food and so aromatic! Enjoyed my shrimp and grits, GNUDI FRIED RICOTTA DUMPLING, CHORIZO & CORN DIP!! The truffle fries were yummy! The FLAN NAPOLITANO was the perfect ending to a wonderful dining experience! When we got our check, even though we were in the dining area- we got happy hour pricing for some of the items we ordered! Nice!! We will definitely be back!! Keep up the great service and amazing food and cocktails!!

Small and busy but great atmosphere and moves quickly. Have a drink at the bar while you wait. Food was amazing and the drinks were great too. I had the burger and wings and they were both outstanding. Good service and would definitely recommend this spot.

Google
Came here for dinner on Saturday, September 14. Our server Eric was OUTSTANDING! He was so attentive and thorough. I ordered the shrimp & grits and had the Peachy With It cocktail. Everything was delicious!! This photo doesn’t capture how HUGE the shrimp were. My husband ordered the burger with truffle fries and he loved it! Everyone at our table-8 of us in all-enjoyed their meal.

Yelp
My Monday spot! Great $2 oysters and half off wine by the glass or the bottle. Service is always on point. Friendly and attentive. The place is spacious and they even have a little lounge looking area.

Yelp
-Hamburgers MR came out M -items on menu, not available - Service apologetic ,Long wait for food ... a kitchen issue. - Ambiance , fine... music too loud and not a dinner type. - I got the feeling they are slowly closing down.

Yelp
First time, great place. We were seated immediately. Happy hour was in effect. Got the oysters, cheese corn dip, and the nacho/ green salsa. They were all so good. My daughter enjoyed her 2 tacos. Music was good and we weee able to watch the tennis match. We will definitely come back!!

Yelp
Went for the first time last night the place is very small. Glad we got there early cause as it gets packed. It's very hard to have a conversation very loud. The food was all good. The service was decent. I would like to come here during the week next time

Yelp
Such a great place! Elevated bar food at its best. Reservations are strongly recommended and I can see why. Upon our arrival on Saturday night this place was hopping! Our table wasn't quite ready so we enjoyed a drink by the bar. Expertly crafted cocktails that are as beautiful as they are tasty. We each sampled a little something from the menu and everything was a hit. My Chicken Mole was surprisingly delicious. I rarely order chicken, but the description on the menu really had me intrigued. My favorite item of the night was the house-made lemon cake dessert. I love all things lemon and this did not disappoint. I wanted to get an extra order to-go! Our server was so enthusiastic and fun. He made the night that much more special. Between the amazing food, the attentive wait staff, and the cozy roar of the fireplace, the four of us really enjoyed ourselves. Our only grape is that this place is far from where we live!

Yelp
Great food and service every time!!! Love the atmosphere as well! The Tuna Crisp is our favorite.

Yelp
I've been coming here for a few years now, and I can't help but feel like the place is progressively going down hill. Don't get me wrong, it's still very decent and a great higher-end gastropub option in the area, but it just feels like over the years prices have gone up significantly while portion sizes and quality have gone down. For example, we just went tonight and everything was really way too salty. My husband, who never sends anything back, sent his beer back because it was spoiled. The pasta with boar ragu should not be a $30 dish. The portion size is very small and lacking meat sauce. One thing they've consistently done well is their seafood. They know how to perfectly cook seafood. The ambiance is cozy and dark and makes a great date night spot.

Yelp
Nice ambiance. We went for 5:15 reservation on a Saturday - it's a relatively small place so definitely get reservations. Service was good. We started with an order of Gnudi which was fried ricotta dumplings with a pea puree. Very hot and tasty. I had the shrimp and grits and my husband got a burger. The shrimp and grits had nice large shrimp, well cooked with lots of andouille sausage. My husband said the burger met the requirements of a "top-shelf" burger. Good blend of meat with ample cheese and caramelized onions. We tried the chocolate & walnut torte which was alittle dense and didn't chew well. Seemed fresh though and would probably recommend they add a dollop of whipped cream to lighten it up. Overall, a very nice meal and I would come back.

Yelp
Nice, elevated gastropub. We happened to stumble upon Mountainside Restaurant Week and were surprised how many people were here on a Tuesday night! The Restaurant Week tasting menu was well worth it, including an appetizer, entree, and dessert. Everything was delicious and nicely plated, and although we were stuffed by dessert time, the bread pudding and tres leches were so good that we still managed to finish them. We'll be back again for a nice dinner out!

Yelp
We had a great meal here, with my husband and I both enjoying our food (the steak and salads were really good). They were family friendly and all of the staff were attentive. We will be back.

Yelp
My family has been going to Publick House for many years and we always have a fantastic experience. Last night we had another wonderful meal. Our server, Fred, was friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent as always. The menu is a mix of mainstays and seasonal offerings, which is awesome because we know we will order our favorites but also like to try their new and seasonal dishes. Last night we had our perennial favorites - the burger, the tuna crisps, and the bibb salad (with extra goat cheese) - and some seasonal dishes - scallops with brussels and delicata squash, amazing ribeye steak frites - and everything was delicious. We also celebrated a birthday, and the restaurant kept our cake in the back and then presented it with candles for singing, then took it back, plated it for us, and served a piece to each of us. So so nice! Love this place!

Yelp
Visiting the area and stopped in on a Monday night. Not any vegetable or vegan options on the menu except the curry. I appreciate that Johnny was honest about the spice level. Most places just say it's not spicy, but he added that if I don't tolerate spice well to not order it, so I stuck to ordering the Waldorf salad. It was fresh and the dressing was light and complemented the flavor of the greens. It would make a good appetizer, but it was not very filling as a main dish on its own. Yes you can add protein, but there were no vegan options. It was quite drafty and chilly as we were seated by the window, but the ambiance is really nice inside, and the service was fantastic.

Yelp
I had dinner here with friends and enjoyed my experience. When I arrived our table wasn't ready so I sat at the bar and waited for my friends to arrive. The host kept checking in and let us know when our table was ready. The bartender was friendly and attentive. We started with the short ribs and tuna crisp. I'm not a big fan of tuna but the tuna crisp changed my mind! Our appetizers were all great. For my entree I had the steak frittes. My steak was a little undercooked but otherwise enjoyable. I really loved the old fashioned, it was well made. Our server was very attentive throughout the night.

Yelp
Nice little place for dinner. This was the first time trying it out and I liked it. The food was good; my friend and I told the waitress we were splitting the fish and chips and they separated the full plate into two to make it easy to eat. I thought the waitress was very attentive but b/w her & the other waiter, they checked on my friend and I way too often, maybe I shouldn't complain about this, but I felt I was being rushed out of the restaurant at some point. After a few times I think they got the message and didn't come back until I signaled I needed the check. Overall it was a good experience.

Jeffrey M.

Yelp
Cocktails are legendary and the food is excellent! I wish they had more of a selection on the menu as I'm a picky eater and the options are limited. Service has always been exemplary and it has a cozy ambiance with a fireplace.

Yelp
This is an incredible place. Great bar, great atmosphere and fantastic food. The octopus appetizer is amazing. Service is great as well as the food. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Loved this place. Went with a friend for dinner. Our server Megan was wonderful. She recommended a fall drink "The Flannel Shirt" which was so good and tasty. For appetizers, my friend and I got the Chicken Fried Mushrooms and the Tuna Crisp. I decided to get an entree. I was recommended the Cioppino which was to DIE FOR! For dessert we split a Pinenut Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Icecream. Would love to come back!

Yelp
Came here for the first time a couple weeks ago and had a great time with the family. The food and drinks were really good and we definitely left satisfied. I forget our servers name but she gave us good service during our trip here. Will be back.

Yelp
It was alright wings were very good can't complain but nothing to go crazy about. Basically if your friends are like hey want to go here you'd go but you'd never be the one to originally come up with the idea. They have no ranch so if you do enjoy ranch on your wings forget about it.
google avatar

Yelp
This one has me confused.... The place is beautiful. Nice bar...parking is good and they opened the front windows/ garage door. Wide open very nice. The food was marginal tor the price. 16 dollars for 6...B- wings. Im not cheap but 16$ dollar wings. I asked for a medium rare burger. It was raw! Carpaccio raw...(see the pic) 19$. We also ordered the octopus. The piece was as big as my ring finger. Not bad but another 20$. I had two martinis so i didn't send the burger back. Not worth the hassle. I ate the sweet potato fries and called it the day. Staff we nice!
google avatar

Bbq B.

Yelp
Nice place to have dinner; somewhat intimate. Nice bar. Nice char on the burgers. But, French fries are short smaller type rough cuts. One would think that they only can afford to buy the ends of the potatoes; not the whole potato. On top of that, they're over cooked to the point where the uneven points are burnt.
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
Overpriced, tiny portions...inattentive service unless you are a regular and known to be a "big tipper." Although the food is tasty, the portion size is NOT commensurate with the prices they charge. If I wanted gourmet food coupled with miniscule portions, I'll go to France....

Yelp
Publick house is a great, upscale gastropub in Mountainside. Service was a little slow at first on a Monday evening, but we had a lovely meal and really enjoyed the musician they had playing during dinner! My wife had the soft shell crab dish and I enjoyed a steak with black beans. Portions are on the smaller side for the price, but food quality is superb

Cynthia M.

Yelp
We got takeout from the Publick House twice and it was very disappointing and way too expensive! Unfortunately, the steak was tough, the salmon was raw inside/bland , the tomato soup was supposed to have grilled cheese croutons, which would have been great, but they put them in the soup, so they were a soggy mess. The hamburger was dry, the chicken wings were also dry and the tuna on crispy rice looked and tasted odd. We went back to give it a second chance, but sadly for $170, we had to throw most of it out! The restaurant is very cute, the salad was good, but the takeout side needs some serious tweaking! Also, please always put the croutons on the side for takeout orders! I do think this is an issue with how they prepare takeout, because it seems "eating in" provides a very different experience!

Yelp
We lost our sitter for the night and were supposed to have a date night. Went to públick house and was blown away perfect environment for the kids and the wife and I had a phenomenal dinner.

Yelp
Is it the Cheers of Mountainside? Maybe not, but a nice spot for a cold beer. You don't feel like an outsider (even when you are). Ample parking.
google avatar

Lena L.

Yelp
I didn't love it. Great enticing menu but nothing lived up to the description. Chicken soup had bones and cartilage in it. Sloppy prep. My brisket sandwich had tons of fat and was also crispy in a bad way. Meh. They forgot something my husband ordered or dropped it or something but he waited forever for his meal. Got my 4 year old the grilled cheese. It came out w these super dark grill lines on it that tasted burnt on super thick bread with cheese that could never compete. It was a two thumbs down from a kid perspective. Fancy shmancy attempt with a failure on execution. Would not return.

Yelp
What a great find. I was in town for business and luckily found this place on Yelp. It was so good I came back again later that week. I sat at the bar both times. Oliver was the bartender. He made me the best Old fashioned I've ever had. He and I chatted about bourbon. He knows a lot about his craft. The food was delicious. The menu changes almost daily. I had the KC steak. It was perfectly prepared. The second time, I had sea scallops. These were amazing. This is a neat little place. Cozy and inviting. I'll definitely come back for Oliver's Old Fashioned and a plate of some goodness.

E J.

Yelp
Poor experiences last few times. Fine for drinks to meet people locally and to swing by. Otherwise food is modestly unremarkable at best. Service is inconsistent and spotty (constant attempts to up-sell and/or bait-and-switch happy hour items to regular prices is getting tiresome - so check your bill). Place seems to have drifted downhill quality-wise... menu/dishes is a bit too try-hard that it comes off as a pretentious wannabe gastropub without the associated quality. Hope things change for the better.

Yelp
Great food and drinks! Our server was great too. Only thing that was odd is we sat atop a small "stage" but other than that it was great.

Isabel S.

Yelp
The food and service are amazing--no complaints. It is a small place so it can be a bit loud. There is outdoor seating but it's facing the street coming off RT. 22 so a similar issue outside too. Recommend calling ahead to secure a good spot.

Cha D.

Yelp
Walked in on a busy Saturday evening with my wife. The place was bustling but we were able to grab two seats at the bar after waiting about 10 minutes. Sara was tending bar and she greeted us right away. We shared a steak, arugula salad, a side of onion rings, and had a couple of drinks. One of the best meals we've had in a while on datenight and Sara's service was top notch. My wife and I go to Roots often and we found the food and service better here. Atmosphere was more authentic too. Hope to be back soon.

Yelp
Great neighborhood Pub! Food is consistent and excellent. Service is friendly and well executed. Whether you live within walking distance or are from far away you will feel welcome. Ambience is warm and inviting whether you sit at the bar or the fireplace. Menu is not overbearing but you should be able to find something you will enjoy.

Yelp
food is just okay. very expensive for what it is. it's also very dark inside and very loud

Yelp

Yelp

Yelp
The food, service, and ambiance are spectacular. The most pleasant bartenders in town. Best happy hour!

Yelp
I had to meet a friend to discuss business and he suggested this place. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. They had indoor and outdoor seating available with the doors open. The place was cute with a fireplace and all. We sat at the bar and was served by Amanda. She was so nice and attentive. I ordered a cocktail she suggested and it waa ok, just a little tarty. I also enjoyed a pinot nior which was pretty good. We were able to discuss business with no issues. It was a chill spot and I had a good experience.

Yelp
Our new favorite restaurant and bar! Came here with friends and we were beyond pleased with service, food and everything in between. Eric was excellent; personable, polite, checked in, and a great bartender. Drinks were spot on. The chef really cares about the food - from taste to presentation to pairings you wouldn't think would match - delicious! Conrad went above and beyond as well for us. A memorable experience, and we will be back! Heard they have a great happy hour with awesome discounts. Thank you!

Yelp
Excellent cocktail program and thoughtful menus that frequently change. I really appreciate going there. It's a little expensive, but nice to treat yourself every once in a while.

Yelp

Yelp
I really wish Yelp would let you do half stars. Publick house to me was a 3.89. Decor:I really liked the barriers they put between the tables, it made us feel like we were eating with people again opposed to the tables being 6 feet apart. The decor was very moody and I liked it. Drinks: Great drink selection, they had one of everything and a nice selection of IPA's Food: the food was ok, for the price I don't know if the food was up to what we were expecting. Pretty bland

Kevin F.

Yelp
Cozy, clean and great service. A bit pricey for what you get and they added a 3.5% credit card penalty. Food was OK.
google avatar

Alan L.

Yelp
A pleasant COVID-compliant meal. The cocktails were creative. We shared several appetizers and one entree. This allowed us to try more different flavors. The Tuna Crisp and Scallops entree were particularly good. We will return.

Yelp
Made a last minute reservation here for dinner, and overall it was a very mid experience. My father and aunt both got the duck breast, both of which came over cooked and sliced differently which was an odd decision on the chef's part. My sister and I split three appetizers. The first was a crispy rice with tuna and spicy mayo; it was not very spicy and the rice was crispy but slightly gloopy on the inside which was an odd mouthfeel. The second was a scallop ceviche with sweet potato purée and jalapeño, which was actually pretty good. The third we're stewed chickpeas with merguez and pita, but the pita was more of a grilled flatbread and was misleadingly labeled. The chickpeas were cooked well and went well with the sausage. Overall, this restaurant wasn't bad but nothing to write home about.
