Side Eye Pie Review - South Austin - Austin - The Infatuation

"The first thing you’ll notice when you walk up to Side Eye Pie’s trailer at Meanwhile Brewing in South Austin is the giant, wood-fired oven bolted onto the end. And while we’re pretty sure it’s powerful enough to serve as a little steam engine if it wanted, we’re glad that it chose a path of pizza instead. It’s what gives the pizzas coming out of Side Eye Pie their signature crust—blistered and chewy from the intense wood-fired heat—with a soft, thin center. The pizzas here lean Neapolitan in style, and if you ask, the staff can probably point you to where in the Austin area most of the ingredients came from. Kick things off with an order of salami chips. They’re crispy little discs of soppressata that come with a side of ranch, but for the optimal experience, grab a side of hot honey to dip them in. For pizza, we like The Meat Sweats (you can probably guess the toppings) and The Local Trip that comes topped with mushrooms from Hi-Fi Mycology. Show up on the weekends, and you can even try a breakfast pizza that will have you second-guessing your Saturday morning breakfast taco routine. Fortunately, Pueblo Viejo is right next door, so you never really need to compromise. Food Rundown photo credit: Holly Dirks Salami Chips The appetizer we didn’t know we needed. Each order comes with a small handful of crispy fried soppressata chips. They’re salty, a bit spicy, and go great dunked into ranch, or even better with a side of hot honey. photo credit: Holly Dirks The Original Marg It’s a classic for a reason, and Side Eye Pie’s margherita pizza doesn’t disappoint. The sauce is tangy, with just a little sweetness, and the fresh basil and local olive oil add a bit of brightness to each bite. photo credit: Holly Dirks The Local Trip This is one of our favorite mushroom pizzas in town. The mushrooms provide a bit of earthiness, and the fontina cheese adds some funk that we can’t get enough of." - Nicolai McCrary

Disappointed After Giving Multiple Chances — I Wanted to Love This Place I truly hate to write negative reviews, especially for local businesses, because I know firsthand how much every review can impact them. I used to own a small business myself, and I understand the weight of a single voice—especially one that people listen to for recommendations. That’s exactly why I gave this place three separate chances before finally writing this. I work right across the street, and this taco spot is a go-to for a lot of my coworkers. I’ve been coming here almost every Friday for the last five months, easily spending between $500 and $1,000 over time—bringing coworkers, tipping generously (often $10 in cash), and genuinely rooting for this place to succeed. But after these last three visits, I can’t keep pretending that things will improve. Each time I’ve ordered tacos, there’s been an inconsistent amount of meat across them. If you look at the photo, you’ll see exactly what I mean: one taco looks decent, the others are barely filled—some with only 4 to 6 small chunks of meat. This isn’t a one-off situation; it’s happened multiple times, regardless of how friendly or supportive I am. I’m not asking for anything extra or special treatment—just consistency and fairness in what I’m paying for. When you’re spending $30+ on a solo lunch, tipping well, and supporting the business regularly, you’d expect at least a consistent product in return. Sadly, it feels like my loyalty and generosity have gone unnoticed. Whether it’s due to management issues, lack of quality control, or just a disinterest in improving, the experience hasn’t changed for the better. It’s frustrating to feel like your business isn’t valued—especially when you’re rooting for the place to thrive. Today was the final straw. As much as I wanted to leave a positive review, I can’t continue supporting a business that doesn’t seem to want to support its customers in return. I hope they improve things in the future, but for now, I’m officially done.

Enjoyed a tacos al pastor and one of shrimp. Both were great. Also had a side of guacamole and chips. There was a generous amount of chips, but similar disappointment to other reviews were the guacamole was mostly lettuce. Plus both could use a bit more salt and flavor.

The PuebloViejo style taco was dynamite!I'm not a mushroom fan but could hardly taste them. The Lamb Barbacoa was kind of bland. Exempted more. Service and atmosphere were otherwise excellent. Located in the parking lot of Meanwhile brewery. I look forward to trying more items next time

The steak tacos are the way to go here. By far the best meat they have. The queso is quite good as well. Glad they have not changed much in quality over the years.

Only way to order is online which incurs a convenience fee. Customers are required to provide a cell number which they use to alert you that your order is ready. However, they will bombard you with marketing and promotional messages long after you have eaten. Not good. Fix this.

Ok, this was the worst and most bland burrito I have ever had. Ever. $12 bistec burrito. Rice, overcooked , barely any rice and couldn’t find any steak!!! They wrap and cut the burrito in half. I don’t know why. It’s a burrito! Picking the first half up it fell apart and landed with a plop. The second half fought to hold it together and looked so sad. Remember, $12 burrito.

The most overpriced Mexican food I've ever had. $10 for bland unseasoned guacamole that tastes like it came straight out of a bag (which it probably did), not to mention is put on top of a bed of lettuce so you're not actually getting that much guacamole. Also had the $15 gordita plate with asada but you'd never know because it was incredibly bland and tasteless. The two spicy salsas were good though, so there's that. Would recommend going to any of the other food trucks and avoid this one
