11 Best Hotels in Oaxaca, Mexico for 2025

"Centrally located, just a short walk from many of the city’s main attractions, Pug Seal is a vibrant and vibey boutique hotel in Oaxaca. With frescoes across the property by painter Rafiel Urigias who took inspiration from Zapotec iconography, Pug Seal eschews the neutral interiors favored by many luxury hotels today. The results are striking—deep greens, lilacs, and ochres cover the walls in the central courtyards. Pug Seal’s 20 rooms set across two floors also play with jewel tones, textiles, and texture to bring warmth and tactile interest to the space. Inside you’ll find air conditioning, minibars, and double-paned windows for those facing the street. Breakfast is served at one of the many alfresco dining tables in the ground floor courtyards—from there, you can also access the other common areas and the on-site meeting room."

Oaxaca's Hotels Know How to Stay Unique

"Pug Seal’s inventive, pocket-sized boutique B&Bs feel like perfect little secrets in the vastness of Mexico City — in the compact historical center of Oaxaca City, however, a 20-suite boutique hotel looms larger. Not to worry: Pug Seal Oaxaca is just as tranquil, just as residential in atmosphere as its cousins in the capital, designed as it is around a central courtyard decorated with colorful murals." - Mark Fedeli

Where to Drink, Stay, and Play in Oaxaca

"With its opening just before the pandemic, Pug Seal’s Oaxacan outpost marks the Mexico City–based hotel brand’s first foray beyond the nation's capital. In paying homage to Oaxaca’s artistic past and present, Pug Seal tapped artist Rafael Urigias to paint the 20-room hotel’s signature fresco-painted murals, which take inspiration from the canon of Zapotec symbols and iconography."

Beautifully renovated historic building with lovely inner courtyard. Staff is amazing and super helpful. Free snacks and “honesty” bar made for a relaxed stay. We upgraded to the master suite which was quieter than our friends’ room. |Breakfast is delicious and the farthest thing from “hotel” food. Across the street is a fabulous bakery. Book a room facing the street if you don’t want to hear club noise until 3am. Highly recommend.

Absolutely stunning hotel. It feels like a paradise oasis in the heart of the city. The staff (Edwin, Isabel, Kayla) were all exceptional and kind. The breakfast was so delicious and fresh. We would highly recommend visitors to stay at Pug Seal Oaxaca. Loved it so much and hope to return!

Writing this review to help others manage their expectations. We were so excited to stay here and had originally booked for 3 nights. We had to change our dates and it was only available for one night and I’m so relieved it worked out that way and we only had to stay for one night. The location is great. Close to everything. Across from boulenc. The building is very pretty. That said the hotel feels more like a hostel than a lovely boutique hotel. Branding everywhere. Cheap furniture. |Our biggest issue was the room. If you ever want to know what being in solitary confinement feels like, stay here. Our room was dark. Exposed pipes/wiring. Zero natural light. I was literally having a panic attach because it looked like we were locked inside with all the window shutters closed. Ending on a positive note - The shower is fabulous.

I was moved in the middle of my stay. I had booked the room a month prior to our arrival. They had notified me prior to our visit that I would be moving rooms after 3 days and I was promised the same grade of room. It wasn't the same. Much smaller and at the rear of the property. Nothing as nice as the original room. I asked for some compensation for the down grade and move. I was told that they couldn't make that decision. I asked for a call or email from management. I never received a call back. |The service staff couldn't have been nicer. They need to give the front desk manager some freedom to make decisions to keep there customers happy. We wont be back. |Mark

Lovely hotel, comfortable beds, snacks and fruit waters always available, an honor bar, centrally located and the friendliest staff! The breakfast choices were delicious and our waitress (Ivette) greeted us each morning with a big smile.Highly recommended!

This is an average hotel experience with some ups and downs. First, not worth the value being charged during the holidays, but that’s to be expected during busy season. Next, the free breakfast is borderline edible, with some dishes coming out okay and some coming out inedible. Some plates, glasses, and items used during breakfast were dirty. To be expected, but noise from the club across the block infiltrates the rooms until 4am. Front desk staff are kind, but their recommendations were usually a bit lacking. Overall, I would not stay here again and did not feel it matched the value, but I did not leave feeling negatively.

A lovely time at Pug Seal. Couldn’t have been happier with our choice! Back rooms get very noisy during the Día celebrations so plan to manage for that if you are in those rooms. Lovely stay otherwise and nice amenities, coffee & cookies, delicious breakfast

Front desk people very arrogant. At their recommendation, booked their driver to visit Monte Albán ruins. Driver took us there but didn’t return at designated time,. We contacted pugseal but they did not reply. Had to take other taxi. Staff at Pugseal never apologised for their driver nor accepted responsibility. We paid about $500 per night for room. At this price, service, attitude and service unacceptable. Hotel has a hostel type feel to it which is fine at lower price point.
