The Best Ice Cream Shops of the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"Pumphouse Creamery is all about “farm to frozen” ice cream: All its flavors are handmade in a tiny kitchen with locally sourced ingredients. This makes for some exceptionally flavorful scoops: The strawberry, for example, actually tastes like fresh-picked wild strawberries. Try the speckled milky chocolate or the mint cookies and cream." - Eater Staff

Google
Pumphouse Creamery is great name with even greater ice cream. What fun and unique flavors they had to choose from and how delicious they all were. It's a very small place and the line was out the door when we went. Things moved quickly though and it was a nice day. Service was friendly and we all enjoyed our choices. I like to say, "if you like ice cream, you'll like this place" and this holds true here, while being a step above your average ice cream. Enjoy!!

Google
Cute little Ice cream shop, selling organic homemade flavors, waffle cones, kiddie cups and pints! Always busy!! Quick friendly service! Smiling helpful even a tiny taste if ur unsure on the flavor! Definitely recommend!

Google
I am here because Google said they had vegan shakes. Once I arrived it seems they only had 1 dairy free ice cream option and 1 sorbet. Since I am not a fan of mint chocolate chip, I decided to just forget about the stomach ache the regular ice cream would give and order a cookies and cream shake. I always ordered an ice cream cookie, even being lactose intolerant I was very bothered after eating the ice cream here. It was worth the risk, the shake and ice cream sandwich were bomb.

Google
I cannot say enough good about this place. I stopped in yesterday to try it for the first time and actually found myself back there today for more. One look at the website will show you the effort and love that is put into each and every flavor they offer. I tried the mini-scoop flight and also received a sample of the lemon olive oil and sea salt which was incredible. From top to bottom in the photo: Rhubarb - 5/5 Salty Peanut butter chip 4/5 Black Garlic 3/5 (not for me, but interesting) Fresh Banana - 5/5 (my favorite) Madagascar Vanilla - 5/5 Staff was friendly and I will definitely be back.

Google
Such a cute place...& the ice cream! Sebastian Joe's is great...but Pumphouse is incredible! I ordered the 5 mini scoop sampler. My favorite was the lemon, infused olive oil & seat salt! A close runner up was the lavender!

Chonnikarn Bo Sophonsirinun

Google
My favorite ice cream shop! I always do a flight so that I can have little bites on things I love. Everything here tastes so goooood.

Shalon Johnson

Google
Phenomenal ice cream. I've been here twice and each time the experience was good. I orderd chocolate ice cream with blood orange and sea salt. The flavor was peculiar but absolutely amazing. This place will definitely be my go to ice cream spot. There's also a table or two for seating.

Google
I love ice cream, but I am fussy. Needless to say, we have a number of great ice cream places in the Twin Cities. However, without a doubt, this is the best. I don't get over to this part of Minneapolis very often, but we made a special trip. After pondering, and tasting the honeyberry and raspberry crisp ( which was delicious), I ordered two scoops: banana and their very wonderful sea salt, caramel, praline pecan. To say these were delicious is an understatement. They were scrumptious!! Creamy with just the right consistency. You cannot go wrong. This ice cream is the best! Lots of people had their 5-scoop flight. It is really nice to get a variety! There was a short line, but they are very efficient.

Yelp
I tend to try ice creams in every city I visit. I can say this is some of the best ice cream I have ever had, particularly the mango red/pink peppercorn flavor. I also tried a few flavors that all tasted yummy and fresh. The person working behind the counter was also kind and patient. The vibes were also good and the materials are compostable which is important. 10/10 will be going next time I'm in the cities as my favorite ice cream shop.
google avatar

Rachel F.

Yelp
They have the most unique flavors, they are extremely affordable, and they are always packed but because the staff works so quickly you're never waiting in line too long. This is definitely a grab and go type of place with minimal outdoor seating. The parking situation is free street parking. A great area to walk around with friends.

Yelp
Best local creamery in the twin cities. Pump house has unreal flavors that are made the very best local soured ingredients and churned fresh. Typically there are 8-10 flavors at a time but I have never tried so many delicious flavors that are unique to many creameries. Reminds me of a gourmet brewer or barista but focused solely on unbelievable ice cream. I've been to 80 plus gourmet creameries and their min chip is the best I have ever had. It's a bit pricier and portions aren't huge but you get what you pay for! Nice job pumphouse team
google avatar

Prim I.

Yelp
Pump house creamy is so much fun. You can find a line waiting outside in the summer. The selection is unique and all very good. They have these ice cream flights with 5 small scoops of your choice. My favorite this rotation was the Burnt Butterscotch- this deliciousness reminds me of the sugar coating of crème brûlée. It might not be for everyone but it's definitely a must try. I think there's a flavor for everyone here. There are a couple of benches to sit outside otherwise the tables at the restaurant is free game after they close.

Yelp
This is a fantastic ice cream shop! I tried the strawberry ice cream, and the use fresh, locally grown strawberries! Farmer's Market strawberries are lightyears better than grocery store options... and it makes a difference in the ice cream. Also, I like the portions. It's not too much. The price point is good too. Family of 5 for under $20.
google avatar

Yelp
I've come here a few times and have left satisfied each visit! The flavors use many local ingredients and are fun/unique. They have a mix of flavors available for anyone's preference. They even have non-dairy ice creams (cashew based) and sorbets available. The store is super cute and has an almost retro feel. The staff has been exceptional each time - always attentive and helpful. The biggest plus is that the prices are so affordable! The only downside is that I wish the store were closer to me!

Yelp
Hands down the BEST ice cream shop I've ever had in Minnesota! The service was so friendly and kind. I love that you can sample as many flavors as you'd like. I tried 3 and landed on their popular flavor - lemon infused with olive oil and sea salt. I've never had ice cream that was so rich, thick and creamy as this. The homemade waffle cone was a delicious touch and had a great crunch to it. My new fav ice cream spot!

Jean Y.

Yelp
Our favorite ice cream spot. Just wish they had more seating, but still worth the stop. olive oil and lavender flavors are a must try!

Yelp
We've had this place on our to try list for what feels like forever and we finally were in the neighborhood and stopped on in, what a fun place! A cute little storefront on main street, it's exactly what I love about this part of town. Worker was friendly especially given we were being indecisive at the time and man - the flavor of this ice cream is impeccable! Next time I can't wait to try the ice cream flight as I love flights of literally any kind! As others have said, everything is locally sourced as much as possible and it shows in the quality of the ingredients. I cannot wait to get back here. We tried the mango with carolina reaper pepper (what a weird experience but my husband loved it!) and the salty peanut butter chocolate chip (to die for!) and both were excellent.
google avatar

Kamni M.

Yelp
From the second we read their website, we were hooked! They source all their ingredients either locally or from local farmers and their end product truly reflects that! The ice cream were delectable. We tried the "Fresh peach" and the "Askinosie Chocolate, Ruby Roasters decaf Coffee, Roasted Almonds, Cocoa Nibs" and LOVED them both! The chocolate was simply out of this world! We can't wait to go back to try the spiced ice cream which we tried a sample of and it was divine!
google avatar

Yelp
Unique flavors are a must try! The fresh ingredients make you feel like you're not splurging.

Yelp
One of my fave ice cream shops in Minneapolis. My go to is a split scoop of the speckled milk chocolate and the sea salt caramel pecan. Sooo good! I also love that the ice cream is not overly sweet. It's a perfect summertime treat or even year round! Highly recommend!
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Great food. Small location. Door county sour cherry ice cream is amazing. Staff was friendly and nice.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
We were visiting from Chicago and chose to try the ice cream here after hearing high praise for it. Sadly all five of us felt it was just kind of "meh".
google avatar

Elisha A.

Yelp
This is our local ice cream shop and it's really good. The owner creates really interesting and delicious ice creams from mostly locally sourced ingredients. They're all very tasty, but a couple are completely craveable and I wait anxiously for their arrival each season: rhubarb in the spring and Colorado peach in late summer. SO GOOD! The rhubarb with its lush swaths of tart, sticky rhubarb "goo" and Colorado peach with its big, perfectly ripe chunks of sweet peaches...completely drool worthy AND available in pints. Better take two then

Yelp
Cute neighborhood spot in south mpls! I can't do dairy so I always appreciate when an ice cream place has a few non dairy options that aren't just sorbet and pumphouse rose to the occasion. They had three non dairy options that looked great when I visited, but I went with the Muscovado which was REALLY good. Like better than milkjam or Sebastian Joe's. The flavor and texture were both spot on. They use local ingredients and have rotating flavors which is fun (more so for those that can have dairy!). And they also have little pup cups that are peanut butter flavored for Fido :) My only complaint is the lack of seating both inside and out. I can imagine on a really busy day people just end up standing around outside eating their ice cream.
google avatar

Jen T.

Yelp
Seriously some of THE BEST ice cream in the metro. Amazing flavors & fun varieties. A must try & will return! Yum!
google avatar

Ronald C.

Yelp
You guys I have been here so much I'm frankly surprised I've never written a review for them! But yes it's fantastic locally made ice cream. My favorite thing to do here is get a "flight" of ice creams and try 5 flavors! They all seem to be locally sourced when possible and the flavors seem well thought out. I love it all. And the folks are friendly. The only real complaint is there's just one table so if it's taken, you gotta go outside to eat. Not a big deal honestly.
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
The place with the ice cream flights! I love this! We had been waiting to go and they weren't quite open until recently! We loved the amount of options, flavors and styles they had! They are local meaning all ingredients are locally sourced and locally made. Their ice cream was so good you can tell it's homemade. I love the flights as it lets you try all the yummy flavors without too much! And it's extremely affordable! Would definitely do this again.

Sam L.

Yelp
All the flavors are so good. Some were not my favorite, but pumphouse never disappointed me. Local honey berry & raspberry Black berry lavender sorbet Strawberry Bing cherry chocolate chip
google avatar

Linda O.

Yelp
This place is ahhh-mazing! We could not decide on 1 flavor so we opted for the $6 flight! Lucas was our server and he was awesome! Such a sweet, polite, patient, friendly young man!! ( he's a keeper for sure) Flavors such as lavender, honey berry and raspberry crisp, coconut almond chocolate chip, lemon infused olive oil and sea salt( fantastic) and Ruby roasters coffee. JUST when I thought it could not get any better, I discovered it is attached to a wonderful bakery!!! This will definitely be a stop for every trip to the area
google avatar

Rebeca C.

Yelp
As someone who is dairy free (most of the time) I stay away from ice cream shops sadly. Happy to say pump house has a great selection of dairy free ice cream that doesn't disappoint!! I actually went back and bought a pint of the dairy free ice cream because it was so good. Will definitely be coming back again and again

Paul T.

Yelp
I travel all over the country making it a priority to sample the best ice cream. Pumphouse ice cream is one of the best in the country. You can taste the quality. The ice cream is dense and not full of air. The other great thing is they don't add excessive amounts of sugar like almost all ice cream shops do. My biggest disappointment is I live in KC and can only get it when visiting. This is BY FAR the best ice cream in Minneapolis!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Bobbie T.

Yelp
pumphousecreamery has lots of unique flavors. Our favorite was Sea Salt, Caramel, Praline Pecans. They also have nondairy flavors which is always a win. If you do not know what you want you can sample a few flavors before making a decision. The flavors are rotated and I can't wait to go back and try something new.
google avatar

Jasmine D.

Yelp
Was honored to be served by the owner! Warm and genuine human! We are regulars and have been for 2-3 years now! Dog ice cream is available for purchase! Quality is top notch. The owner truly cares about her community and quality! My favorite seasonal flavor is a spilt single of cardamom & candied orange peel paired with the black pepper, star anise, finger, fennel!

Yelp
Pumphouse Creamery has some SUPER tasty ice cream flavors. I may or may not have ordered ice cream (too) many times during this hot summer and this is my go-to place to grab a pint. Their prices are very reasonable. I started going here after COVID hit so I have always ordered ice cream by the pint and I have never eaten ice cream on-site. That being said, their ice cream by the pint is super tasty. They have a relatively small number of flavors at any given time (some permanent flavors and then some seasonal) but it is sourced mostly locally. Their lemon infused olive oil and sea salt is an absolute favorite - a little tartness from the lemon, a little saltiness, and then a luscious creaminess from the dairy and olive oil. It is very balanced and not overly sweet. Their strawberry and their banana ice cream are wonderful too - very fruit forward and no artificial taste. Cookies and cream is great too (plenty of cookie taste in it). They have some non-dairy options too. For a while you could get mint chocolate non-dairy and it was awesome - not too minty and it was difficult to tell that it had no dairy. I'm sure I have tried other flavors too and everything I have brought home was super good. They have limited hours when it's not summer and that's probably my least favorite thing about them (because my spouse likes ice cream even when it's cold). It is easy to order and get it delivered if you like, and pickup is quick and easy. Pumphouse is a great local place for ice cream.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
My favorite flavor is Chocolate Banana Brownie. So so good. The brownies come from Heather's down the street. Also love Fresh Banana, Cookies and Cream, and the Mango Passionfruit Sorbet. The only flavor I haven't liked of theirs is the Grapefruit Sorbet Great ice cream and wonderful location
google avatar

Dale G.

Yelp
I tested 4 flavors and ordered 2 flavors. I thought the flavors weren't bad but weren't amazing. More importantly, I thought the ice cream was too Icy and not creamy enough. I just think it wasn't made well enough. It seems to be a little bit cheaper than the other gourmet ice cream shops but I expected a much better texture and was let down.

p d.

Yelp
Go! You're welcome. Olive oil whaaaa.. is off the hook. Everything we had was great. Went back the flowing day.
google avatar

Katie U.

Yelp
This place was a little out of the way for me but worth the drive. It's along the Chicago Ave strip with a few other restaurants and shops. Parking was a little tricky but we found a spot a few streets over. The unique seasonal flavors drew us in. We went during the fall and I had the most amazing pumpkin ice cream. I don't even remember what my husband got because mine was so good I didn't care about trying his. The pumpkin flavor had a little nutmeg spice and hints of sweetness, I could have eaten a whole gallon. The other great part of this business is that they use local and organic ingredients so you feel good about supporting farmers while enjoying a treat. They are always changing up their flavors for every season so I plan to go back soon and try their summer flavors!
google avatar

Leslie M.

Yelp
A very close second to La La Ice Cream. Second because of some of the ice cream textures. Great flavor combinations and wonderful, knowledgeable customer service. There is no sign for the place, only decals on the windows, so it can be tricky to find. Parking is okay...a lot of 15 minute spots close by. A lot of the flavors incorporated local, fresh ingredients which I love! I opted for the 5 flavor sampler because there were so many tasty options. My favorite may be the lemon bar buttermilk made from A Baker's Wife lemon bars (which is an amazing bakery!). The honey ginger sorbet is eye-poppingly tasty! I am not a sorbet person but I was SO close to getting a whole scoop of it. The ginger comes through strong which I absolutely love and the texture is smooth. I may come back just for that sorbet. I never thought I'd say that! I was disappointed in the Earl Grey..great flavor but icey texture which I don't like. I prefer a very creamy and smooth texture. I've made an Earl Grey ice cream with a sweet cream base before and it tasted exactly the same, ice and all.
google avatar

Lynne C.

Yelp
I love ice cream and I used to avoid Pumphouse creamery because I had these memories of not liking it, but went back a couple weeks ago & smashed that misconception! Turns out I'm no a huge fan of their cones-- literally taste like corrugated cardboard to me but the ice cream was an absolute hit!! I sampled loads of flavors and they were so patient & kind, ended up going with some sort of Vietnamese cinnamon flavor and it was absolutely incredible!! I'll definitely be coming back & getting it in a cup for the rest of my treks
google avatar

Susan Y.

Yelp
Pumphouse definitely deserves more recognition for their great ice cream. They've got a good selection of unique flavors. I had the strawberry and pumpkin seed + flaxseed + sunflower seed + cinnamon. Good texture and just the right amount of sweetness. Cone stayed crunchy the whole time. Reasonable price. Give it a try in you're in the south Minneapolis area! You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Kimmy D.

Yelp
After a summer-long tour of ice cream shops, I can decisively say this is my favorite. Over a cinnamon-anise scoop, I created my list why: 1) local emphasis on flavors! Classics and experimental flavors! 2) lots of flavors but not an overwhelming number where the taste-testing gets out of control 3) excellent portion options (love a 5 scoop taster and 2-flavors-in-one-scoop) 4) just right price point! 5) everything compostable 6) good service (our fellow was friendly but speedy even during rush minute) Didn't get the cone, but will next time :)
google avatar

Suzie Q.

Yelp
PS, now that I no longer live in the area I really really miss this place. You lucky ducks in Minneapolis have a true treasure with this ice creamery! When I visit it's the first place I go. Rhubarb ice cream in the spring. How great is this!!
google avatar

Danielle R.

Yelp
Saw this place on one of Food & Wine's best ice cream places in the US. Went here to try it out. While i wasn't awed like another local fav that made their list. What I loved was the cone. They were unique and tasted home made and different than any other waffle cone I've had. I loved the earl grey and the cardamom and orange flavor. The flavored tasted fresh and new. Wished there were more different flavors though. Definitely worth a try for the uniqueness of it all and small town feel and treatment.
google avatar

Jesse M.

Yelp
Quality of ice cream is amazing! Rich flavors! Fresh fruit that really shines. Love this spot! If you're used to corn syrup ice cream by the mega bucket, maybe you won't like it? I see somebody on here rag the Colorado peach but I just had it last week and it was amazing, with just big juicy exploding peach flavors. I've tried about 8 of their flavors and never been disappointed. Plus, they ALWAYS have quality non dairy options. The vegan in my life loves it!
google avatar

Deborah W.

Yelp
Simply the best ice cream. Great ingredients from local farms, fresh and not overly sweet. The rhubarb ice cream is absolutely incredible.
google avatar

Jeneane D.

Yelp
Love this little shop. The workers are sweethearts and you can tell just by the samples that the flavors are natural. Definitely reach for the 5 mini scoop sampler for your first visit!
google avatar

Tian Q.

Yelp
Flavors: -Sea Salt Caramel and Praline Pecans, not enough salted caramel flavor for my liking -Strawberry, natural/farmy/creamy/refreshing, berry good -Salty Peanut Butter Ice Cream with Chocolate Caramel Nougats, liked it, but my dentist wouldn't have liked knowing how most of the nougat got stuck to my teeth -Molasses Ginger and Brown Sugar, tasted like frozen chinese medicine Overall, the ice cream is decent, best thing they have got going on is the sticky texture and I love playing with my ice cream like it's playdo.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
Happy to find an ice cream shop with non-dairy options. Cute place, friendly service, and a few featured flavors. It doesn't have a large sign so almost missed it. I appreciate the earth-friendly containers and that they compost.
google avatar

Sarah N.

Yelp
Three words: Rhubarb ice cream ... this beautiful local spot is still selling pints! Go. See what's current. Really ... go!!

greg r.

Yelp
From coast to coast I have visited some of the best "adult" ice cream shops. No doubt, Pumphouse ranks as one of the best.
google avatar

Amy J.

Yelp
So good!!!! Service was friendly and the flavor selection was great. I got banana and it was Amazing! My only gripe and I'm not sure it was still too early but the lack of outdoor seating was a bummer. The cafe next door seemed to occupy all the tables and chairs and there was only one long bench. It was really really good!
google avatar

Linli F.

Yelp
90 degree beautiful sunny day in Minneapolis. What's the first thing on my mind? Ice cream, of course. My boyfriend and I recently laid our eyes on a list of the top 10 best ranked ice cream places in Minnesota, Pumphouse Creamery rated #4. We had to give it a try. It's a little ice cream parlor in South Minneapolis with only one table inside, and a few tables outdoor. First thing I noticed upon entrance was their unique flavors! I wanted to try so many, so opted for the 5 scoop sampler and decided on Kufi (ground pistachios, rosewater, and cardamom), fresh rhubarb (their best selling seasonal ice cream), lavender, buttermilk w/ a baker's wife lemon bars, and malt vanilla with double chocolate cookies and malt milk balls. What did I think? The flavors were extremely light and the ice cream itself had more ice than cream. Kufi disappointed me quite a lot and I was kind of thrown off by the odd and unpleasant flavor. Fresh rhubarb tasted like a light vanilla ice cream with bits of rhubarb. Lavender tasted like a minty flower, which ended up being weird as an ice cream flavor. My favorite had to be the buttermilk w/ a baker's wife lemon bars, probably because I love anything lemon-flavored but even at that, it was just okay. Malt vanilla with double chocolate cookies and malt milk balls was my boyfriend's favorite, but was more of an icy chocolate taste than any malt flavor. Overall? The flavors didn't taste good as ice cream flavors. Too icy. I was definitely disappointed and probably won't be returning. I miss the creamy, rich flavoring of real ice cream.
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
What a great new ice cream shop!! They compost everything which is a huge plus in my mind, but their ice cream is cream and inventive! We get the 5 scoop sampler which was a great choice, I am aways a candy in the ice cream sort of gal but tried out there fruit option, so glad I did, their rhubarb was fantastic!! We will need to go back again to try out more options
google avatar

Anna T.

Yelp
This place is a lesser known ice cream joint that is one of my favorites. Everything is organic and doesn't taste overly sweet. The flavors are balanced and their vegan options, while minimal, are really great. I had a vegan strawberry that was hands down the best strawberry ice cream I've had. I also tried a rhubarb flavor on my second visit and discovered they source local ingredients (the rhubarb was local). Their ice cream is simple and fantastic.
google avatar

Jayson M.

Yelp
I love small businesses and especially small business ice cream parlors. That's my dream and I live vicariously through them. Pumphouse has some unique flavors that mostly work and the ingredients they use are of the highest quality. They post what is in every ice cream, and it's exactly what you want. Ice cream base is basically 4 ingredients. I love how they stay true to the simplicity of real ice cream. The strawberry is probably the best I've ever had. If you've ever picked real strawberries, you know the taste vs a store bough Driscoll's trash is night and day. This ice cream will leave an aftertaste in your mouth that you'll go to sleep with. One issue is some of the flavors will have an icy texture which is a major factor for me. Otherwise, I love what's happening here and I wish them all the success in the world.
google avatar

Makayla R.

Yelp
Definitely my ice cream place of choice! They always have such yummy flavors, helpful staff, and a great vibe. It's a small little place that sometimes can be hard to find but if you stumble upon it, you'll be grateful you did. Prices are fair and samples are available to try all the yummy flavors. Love that they use family owned and small businesses to get their ingredients and that the ice cream is homemade. So worth the trip!

Colin H.

Yelp
Oh man, this place is great. So far, I've had Passion Fruit & Mango Sorbet, Sea Salt Caramel, Lemon Olive Oil and Honeyberry & Raspberry Crisp, and they're all terrific. Even though there are other ice cream heavy hitters in town (Sebastian Joes, Izzy's, etc.), I haven't encountered a place with such intriguing flavors, let alone one that pulls them off! Not to mention, Barb is a super nice person and really appreciative of your business, especially during these wild times. Seriously, give this place a shot; I don't expect you'll regret it. One note: their sign outside is pretty small, so it can be tough to spot, but it's right next to Pizza Biga/Turtle Bread Company.
