Pupatella Plans to Open Another Arlington Pizza Shop By the Summer | Eater DC

"That Reston shopping-area site has operated as a Pizza Hut since 1977 and will continue to operate until its lease runs out; Michael Berger, a founding partner of Pupatella who is from Reston, describes the location as a local landmark and recalls attending Little League parties there, with the space expected to convert to Pupatella in early 2020." - Tierney Plumb

I don’t know how this place did it but they provided a perfect place experience. From the moment my family and i walked into the restaurant until the second we walked out. We sat down and the person waiting us came right to our table and got our drinks got my children menus and before we could even think they started great conversation to find out our preferences (kids and all) after we got the drinks and pizza in Kevin, the manager invited my kids to go see how the pizza that we just ordered was being made. We went to go and speak to the cooks. The manager taught us a little Spanish to properly communicate with the kitchen staff they seemed happy to be making the pizzas. We got a front row seat to our food that we were about to get and my children love that the manager also did magic for my kids while we were in there And also informed us about everything that we were about to eat ingredient wise where it came from and what it was so there was no confusion and I appreciated that as my kids are very picky and my wife. This was our first time in this place and it will definitely not be the last they treated us like family like we had been there before and we had a usual or something like that. This place had great cheese on their pizza as well. I loved the leopard spots on my pizza and gave it a little bit more flavor. I got pepperoni and we also ordered two plain cheese pieces, but they were not plain at all. They were flavorful tasted like some type of olive oil or something was in the pizza and it was fresh. The whole experience we had was a 10 out of 10 food customer service. The actual atmosphere was great every person in the staff that was there spoke to us and felt like please go give them a try if you have not before we will definitely be back soon and might even make it our regular family spot as we just moved to the neighborhood not too long ago.

Good authentic Italian food. I had an appetizer sampler, lemon cello spritzer, and chorizo pizza. The pizza was a little heavy on the red bell pepper for me, but still good. I would go back but just pick a different pizza.

Immediately greeted at the where a very nice gentlemen took us to our seating area explains why he like that particular spot for us, because of the sun was shining on and it will feel warmer and cozier. Our server was on time and food came in less than ten minutes and it was exactly how they described. Our server checked on our drinks food and offered dessert all in a very professional manner. The place looks very clean and music is enjoyable and not too loud. They made sure to dismiss us with a warm goodbye.

6 minutes from ordered togo to pick up...nice! I couldn't wait and the pizza didn't disappoint. I did think good, fast but not cheap: a smaller pie for 1 person $20 with tip.

Best Napolitano pizza around. We have eaten at this outlet once and st three columbia place three times. Always excellent.

I had my first visit to Pupatella Reston, and I was not disappointed! The atmosphere is super charming, with a warm, inviting interior that makes you want to settle in and enjoy a great meal. One of the highlights for me was that they offer beef pepperoni, which was such a treat since I don’t eat pork. It’s not something you find at every pizzeria, and I really appreciated having that option. The pizza itself was top-notch—authentic Neapolitan style, with a perfectly blistered crust, high-quality toppings, and that delicious balance of flavors you expect from a wood-fired oven. The service was great, and the whole experience felt effortless and enjoyable. I’ll definitely be coming back! Highly recommend if you’re looking for excellent pizza in a cozy, welcoming setting.

Google
We tried out Pupatella in Reston for my son’s birthday. Pizza is his favorite, especially Neapolitan style. We thought the food was tasty and the service was good. Our order of cheesy garlic bread went to another table by accident, so they quickly made a new one and took it off the bill. That was appreciated. The interior was cute and they have outdoor seating which is nice for when the weather is good. I would definitely go again.

Google
This is the best pizza place! The pizzas were the perfect size per person and filled with so much flavor. We got a Pepperoni and a Buffalo Bianca pizza. The pizza crust was thin and fluffy with a perfect oven charred spots. We paired these pizzas with a Nojito and house made lemon peach cream soda. Every bite and sip was packed with delicious flavor. All of which perfectly fit the cozy family atmosphere and friendly staff. 100/10 would recommend and will be coming back with friends and family!

Yelp
I had not been here in over 6 months. What a wonderful surprise! New additions to the menu, a charming "happy hour" menu (food and drink) from 3pm-6pm, and an incredible selection from the bar. Our server (Isaiah) was delightful. He was attentive but not annoying...and a first for us: he reviewed the bill, line by line at the end of our meal. I had the meatball pizza and it was superb. My dining companion had the spinach pizza. We didn't talk while eating! The side salad is huge, share it. I noticed a chalkboard listing Lottery Bourbon offerings. The choice was mind blowing and the prices extremely reasonable. The bartender was very knowledgeable and made some great suggestions. We ended our meal with a shot of Pumpkincello... so flipping good... I think it would be great in a cup of hot coffee. If you are looking for a great place for superior pizza, a friendly staff and a terrific bar, please try the Reston location. Do not be put off by a previous experience you may have had. This team has upped it's game and it shows. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
This isn't just my new favorite pizza place in the greater DMV area... it may be my new favorite restaurant of any kind! The overall taste and ambience is very European, with balanced flavors on a perfect thin, chewy crust, in a setting where neither the music nor the decor are too loud. Friendliest service anywhere I've seen in at least 20-years, and ever in America. Cannot recommend this place enough! would give it seven out of five stars if I could! Cant wait to go back!
google avatar

Yelp
You have to get The Real Ragu pizza, the sauce is so incredible! I had a great experience here, will definitely have to come back. The servers were also very friendly here, and there was a nice young lady with glasses who was bartending at the bar that was so polite, thank you!

Yelp
Pizza is really good! I am sure it would be even better super fresh vs delivery. I tried the eggplant and red pepper which was smoky but could have used more cheese. The beef pepperoni pizza was really good! The pizzas are on the smaller side but the ingredients are very fresh. I would not order the caprese salad again though as it was not super fresh. I would get the pepperoni pizza again and maybe a make your own with eggplant and more cheese. Definitely a solid place!

Yelp
I typically drive to Tysons for my Neapolitan pizza fix however something told me to search and see if there was a Neapolitan pizza restaurant closer to where I was and that's how I discovered Pupatella! The restaurant has a large parking lot in addition to a large outdoor seating area. I was greeted upon first walking in and immediately taken to a nice spacious seat and given time to look over the menus. It was almost time for their happy hour to begin and the server was nice enough to honor happy hour pricing despite me being just two minutes early. I ordered a lemon cello, martini, eggplant, arancini and a buffalo margarita pizza and everything was amazing! The martini was made with their fresh in-house made lemon cello and with love because the bartender really did her thing making that cocktail. I wasn't able to finish the arancini so I took that to go , but I devoured the entire happy hour pizza because it was so so good. I told friends we have to come back here for happy hour because there was so much on the menu that I wanted to try, but of course couldn't do that while I was by myself. Lastly, service was amazing. The two women who took care of me, went above and beyond to ensure that I had everything I needed, and that my dining experience was phenomenal. I can't wait to return

Yelp
Wow, the service here is phenomenal. Matt was so knowledgeable about when the restaurant opened and gave us some history. They were helpful with recommendations and they not only helped us but encouraged us to try their gelato which was absolutely amazing. The salted caramel and pistachio were excellent. We got the garlic mozzarella bread and the Caivano pizza. The ambiance of the restaurant makes me want to hang out in here. The vibe is relaxed and fun, there's a couple of games, great happy hour. On top of all of this, the prices are excellent for the quality of the food and the service. Everyone should give this place a try as it is a great place to hang out with friends, go on a date, or have a solo meal.
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
The food was all amazing. Service was very good. We got to talk with Matt the manager and he was very knowledgeable about everything. The inside, ambiance, was perfection. Lots of room inside and outside seating as well. We had a great meal for a great price. I will highly recommend trying this place.

Yelp
Was in the area, late lunch and decided to order a single to-go pizza. The nice thing about Pupatella is, for carryout, it's a quick, no hassle in-and-out - lots of lot parking. I dig that and frankly it's a consideration when I want to do takeout. I had had pizza from here once previously, recently (see my prev review) and really liked it. It reminded me a bit of Andy's without having to drive to Tyson's or Fairfax. Both Pupatella and Andy's serve Neapolitan NY style pizza with the foldable crust consistency, not the thick crusts of Domino's or Papa John's but not a crispy thin crust. The pies come in 1 size - 11" - they're cut into quarters which makes sense especially since the slices are foldable. As I said in my previous review, they don't skimp on toppings (see my pics) which is a nice touch. This time, I wanted to try something different so opted for the Ham (Prosciutto) and Mushroom - not cheap - $15.50. (The other pies I tried the last time - the Prosciutto Arugula ($17.50), Margherita ($16.50) and the Caivano ($18.75) - were even more expensive than this one.) (Btw, an Andy's whole pie (18") is way cheaper and a way better deal - $22 for cheese, $25.50 for their standard pies including Margherita and Pepp.) The pie transported home decently, no complaints - see my pic and vid (!). Get it home before it condensates and gets wilty a bit inside the box if it sits too long in there. Cure for that? Don't nuke it to reheat - always pop slices in a toaster oven or oven (I crank it up to like 450 for 5 mins) to "crisp it up" - good as new. :) Enjoyed the Ham & Mushroom a lot. I actually ate the whole pie and I didn't feel like I over-stuffed myself afterwards. I enjoyed the freshness of the pie dough and ingredients - kudos Pupatella. I've decided this will be my new go-to over Domino's or P-John's when I have the occasional hankerin' for pizza. (Another pie favorite if you ever go to Matchbox is their Fig & Prosciutto pizza - SO GOOD. Perhaps, Pupatella you might consider adding this amazing flavor combo to your repertoire hint hint - ?) If I'm craving me a decent pizza, I'll sprint over to Pupatella for carryout (way closer for me than Andy's). The wait time is reasonable (service is pleasant and friendly btw!), quick in and out right off Wiehle, and with carryout, I avoid paying the exorbitant delivery tack-ons which would make this 11" pie wayyyy overpriced. P.S. I would consider eat-in too in the future - the place inside was surprisingly impressive (I had old Pizza Hut vibes on the brain but it's nothing like old Pizza Hut vibes lol) - nicely decorated, clean, cozy, nicely lit, and comfortable. Full service.

Yelp
Fantastic pizza. The food is delicious. The service is prompt. We had pepperoni and a specialty pizza along with some meatballs. Everything was excellent
google avatar

Jessica F.

Yelp
Build your own sausage and mushroom and a pepperoni and sausage. Pizza was really tasty but I think they dropped it tipped my pizza, all the mushrooms were on one side. I'd order it again.

Bryce H.

Yelp
Great food and great company. Customer service off the charts. Pizza is awesome and drink selection is solid.

Yelp
Homemade and ingredients coming from Italy makes a huge difference. Impressed with the cuisine, the service is great. Atmosphere is good. Eat outside in summer. Highly recommended!! Love the pizza and I'm not a fan of most pizzas.

Yelp
This is our go-to pizza spot. If the service were as consistent as the food, I'd easily give Pupatella a five-star rating. Never had truly bad service but have had inattentive and lazy service one too many times to justify a higher rating. Inconsistent bartenders as well. Their Negroni and Italian Old-Fashioned are solid cocktails but I've been brought a class of ice with a splash of liquor more than once. Stick with the wine, a respectable list for a pizza spot. As for the pizza, second to none in NoVa. Not even close. We've had the Margherita, the Prosciutto Arugula, the Diavola, the Eggplant & Red Pepper, the Ham & Mushroom (least favorite) and the Pepperoni, as well as numerous "build your own" concoctions. With the exception of the Ham & Mushroom, I'd order any again (and have). Absolutely favorite is the Meatball Pizza though. Napoli Salad, Zucchini Fries, and Fried Mozzarella are all winners too. Top notch ingredients; great sauce and crust. We go or take-out here once a month.

Yelp
Great pizza, but the bourbon selection is just amazing. Highly recommended. Check out the bottle of blantons gold!

Yelp
It's been a few years since I've been to Pupatella. This is the first time at this location. I've been to the Arlington location a handful of times. There is an ample amount of parking. The service was excellent with the both servers checking back in. The lunch special was a solid deal with a pizza and salad included. The Chocolate Panna Cotta was also delicious.
google avatar

Sylvie C.

Yelp
I order from here at least once a week. Their dough is perfect and I love their eggplant or Margherita pizzas. Careful with their pizzas containing meat like pepperonis. It is super duper salty. I like them but can't eat more than one piece at a time. The service here is prompt and fast. The ambiance is fun because of decors. Bathroom is clean and gender inclusive. Looking forward to returning soon.

Fred R.

Yelp
We visited mid afternoon and it was not too busy and the drinks and food came out quick. Great service and we always love the pizzas. Definitely recommend.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch while in the area... the manager was very helpful and friendly and the menu is their standard menu, loaded with all sorts of tasty items. I opted for their Pepperoni Pizza, which uses beef pepperoni and I think that's awesome! I asked them to cook it slightly longer so it wouldn't be as soft in the middle. It came out looking amazing, with a nice char on the crust, but the center was still too soft to pick up while hot, as all the toppings would slide off. So, the first couple of slices, I had to fork & knife, but once it cooled slightly, I was able to fold and pick up the remaining slices. Flavors were on point! Sauce was great! Pepperoni was amazing!! Overall, I really enjoyed it!

Kyle K.

Yelp
The food was amazing as always. Outdoor vibes, great service and accommodation from our server Christian Wade, couldn't ask for a better pizza night

Yelp
Everything was amazing! This is my 3rd visit and it just keeps getting better and betters will definitely be back. Italian Margaritas are delicious!

Yelp
food was delicious, staff welcoming and told us interesting background on food. Myra was fantastic. Will come back here more often.

Yelp
Pupatella has very good authentic Neapolitan pizza. Pizzas are made in real wood fired pizza ovens from Naples, Italy. I was very surprised to find that there is a full bar inside. The Napoli Salad was very good. The dessert selection is solid with cannoli, panna cotta, Sfogliatella and or course, gelato. I plan to go back and try some of the appetizers and wines.
google avatar

Lisa P.

Yelp
This place was ok. Their pizza was mediocre. I went here since my bf's stepmom took me out. It wasn't that good since the pizza was really doughy and moist and wet almost drenched. It was a very wet pizza. Inside looks cool though it was looking vintage. They were quick to serve us.
google avatar

Walter L.

Yelp
The hot pizza hit the spot and despite being our first time, we felt like VIPs. Was kindly greated by several team members. Thought about sharing our desserts but couldn't resist the crunch of the 2nd cannoli. Had to get a second order and not mad about it at all. My son loves the name Pupatella and wants to make it our new spot for Pizza.

Yelp
Food is always excellent and the service is awesome too! Whenever we come to Reston this is our place to go!

Yelp
Great pizza, accommodating staff, and friendly service. Liliana was great. Thanks for the whole experience!
google avatar

Sophia N.

Yelp
Authentic Neapolitan pizza that focuses on quality over crazy topping options. The crust was thin and chewy and each bite had a good balance of toppings. I hate when a pizza has three small slices of mozzarella so I was very satisfied with this margherita pizza. They also have a selection of draft beers to accompany your meal!

Alla O.

Yelp
Had a real hankering for pepperoni pizza, but currently avoiding pork. Hence I was thrilled to see a beef pepperoni pizza on their menu. It really hit the spot and they didn't skimp on the pepperoni. We ordered it for takeout, and the only reason I removed a star is because it wasn't as crispy as I enjoy it, so put it into the home oven to finish, but once out it was perfect and while pricey, I'll be back the next time I have a pepperoni pie craving.
google avatar

Sarah K. P.

Yelp
Came here last week to celebrate a friends first horse riding tournament and the kids loved their cheese pizza. Grownups had a couple of apps; service was friendly and attentive. This is actually one of my least favorite pizza places as brick oven pizzas just aren't my thing; but was a request by the other family.
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
Enjoyed dinner here last night. Started with the combo appetizers, which were good. Had arancini balls, mozz balls, and a croquet. Husband like the croquette the best. We also tried their meatball appetizer which was just ok. Then we shared a pepperoni pizza. It was quite oily, which I understand comes from the pepperoni. It was tasty, though. Would try other pizzas next time.
google avatar

Yelp
The service and quality here is unsurpassed. Ambiance is mellow, food is superb, and drinks are top tier. Great for families and for dates, cannot recommend enough!!

Yelp
When lunch is an all-around joy and satisfying experience you leave with a full stomach and a smile on your face.  Such was our experience at Pupatellas in Reston.  The space is open and comfortable with fun décor such as colorful murals and neon.  The tables are well spaced and comfortable. The noise level is great.  The service was perfect - friendly and helpful and checking on us just the right amount of times.  We even appreciated the up-selling with a smile when she convinced us to make just a little more room for dessert!  The brussels sprouts appetizer was tasty and generous and the apples added a nice crunch. The arancini were also very good and not at all greasy.  The pizzas we ordered, a prosciutto and arugula and a mushroom were both fresh-tasting with a nice textured crust.  The gelato, especially the salted caramel one was a great way to end a very pleasant and super satisfying meal.  There is plenty of parking and indoor and outdoor dining is available.
google avatar

Yelp
Probably the best pizza in the Herndon/Reston area! We can't get enough of it. 5-star (or more) for the pizza. Just be careful of recent menu changes. All salads are now "side" salad size at "full size" prices. 2 side salads now cost more than the pizza. 3-star (or less) for the salad.
google avatar

Truthful Y.

Yelp
The pizzas were not hot or even warm. If I didn't gave guests visiting, I would have returned the food. The salads were mediocre. I've eaten many brick oven pizzas in Italy, but never like this. I had such high hopes as I had heard good things. :(l

Megan D.

Yelp
I love their pizza and it's consistent in how awesome it is! A little expensive, but for the first time I actually got some kind of discount for the flower and garden show.

Nicole M.

Yelp
Fantastic lunch and amazing service! Thank you to Christian for an awesome experience!

Global A.

Yelp
I went there this weekend and ordered a pizza and salad. I have been to the other Pupatella locations, and the Neopolitan pizza they are famous for, which I ordered for the sit-down dinner, has been decent. However, something went very wrong on this visit. The service was mediocre at best (it was not crowded), and the pizza was completely off base--the slices tasted like cardboard and had no flavor whatsoever including the cheese and the pizza sauce Can only hope they had an off day but not planning to go back there again.
google avatar

Cinthya J.

Yelp
I've been to ALL the Pupatelle and so far this is the best one! Not only was pizza on point but also staff! Service, gelati, pizza = ABSOLUTELY GREAT! This is by far my best and favorite spot Strongly recommend it!

Brandon G.

Yelp
Awesome pizza and even better experience, at the reston location. The bourbon selection is incredible and Zach the bartender is great!

Yelp
The food is amazing, our waitress was super nice, and the amazing ambience. I would definitely recommend!!! Also the Caviano is really delicious.

Yelp
Exceptional service from Nyra and the management team! Amalifi salad is light and delicious. The white mushroom pizza is incredibly tasty. It's a friendly, warm, atmosphere. Great energy!

Yelp
Delivery order was really screwed up. Pizza was small and cold by the time I got it. They were supposed to notify me when the order was delivered to the hotel but they never did and I never knew it was here until it was too late and way too cold.
google avatar

Nora A.

Yelp
This was our first time trying the Reston location of Pupatella and we had a great time! The food was piping hot and fresh, their zucchini fries are to die for, and we enjoyed our pizzas with plenty left over to take home. I would say I'd skip the mozzarella bites (balls?) next time, they were a bit bland and forgettable, but the zucchini fries are amazing. I also love the Amalfi salad, but it is quite simple for the price. Our server was a bit inattentive but nice enough and there was ample clean seating indoors and out!

Yelp
We came to Pupatella to on National Pizza Day to try out their version of Neapolitan Style Pizza. Walking in, the atmosphere is very bright and lively with street art and color pop. Bringing a warm and inviting welcome. We were greeted immediately and asked if we wanted to dine in or take to-go. We choose to dine in. We ordered the Chorizo and the Buffalo Bianca - sub with pepperoni instead of prosciutto. My bf also ordered the Pupatella pilsner on tap. The pizza came out quick! The aroma was enticing. Very light crust with a top layer of crisp but not chewy. The center of the pie was thin and weighed down with the toppings - so you were really able to taste the flavors that you choose. I really enjoyed the White pizza Buffalo Bianca. I was not in the mood for Prosciutto, so I was really happy they were able to switch it out. My bf enjoyed the Chorizo but the fire roasted tomatoes and peppers was something he had never tried on a pizza before. We finished up the night with a pint of the stracciatella. Yes, they also have gelato you can take by the pint! We will be back to try some of the other pizza options and appetizers.

Yelp
I was biking with my family along the W&OD trail and happened to notice that Pupatella had taken over this long time vacant spot. We were hungry, and I had heard great things about their pizza from their Arlington location. They had a good space setup for outdoor seating, so we decided to eat outside. They aren't currently running full service right now, so we went inside to order our food, and then their staff graciously brought our food out to us when it was ready. We decided to go with their Margherita DOC, Mushroom White, Meatball pizzas and their Frittura sampler (basically deep fried goodness!) I enjoyed all of the pizzas, especially the meatball one. The limited service was great, although, the one pizza I wanted that has roasted corn on it was unavailable. The prices were also reasonable based on the quality of ingredients. I'll definitely be back for more pizza soon!
google avatar

Judy N.

Yelp
The beloved Neapolitan pizzeria in Arlington, VA is now open in Reston! Ordered their classic Margherita DOC and the caramelized onion tart and both were delicious! The caramelized onion tart is my new favorite. There is saltiness from the bacon bits and sweetness from the onions. Mozzarella cheese was creamy and quality. The crust is thin, soft, and chewy, just the way I like pizza crust. The website wasn't working on the day we ordered. We had to go inside, order, and return within 25 mins. The line was long but it moved quickly. Staff was friendly and efficient. Got our pizzas in no time and went home. They have outdoor seating and a fire pit which would be nice for warmer weather. I loved the spinning gelato machine at their Arlington location and would love it if they could have one here! *smiley face*
google avatar

Caroline F.

Yelp
Right off the W&OD trail- just a bike ride away! We got the chorizo, meatball and pesto. I enjoyed the crunchiness of the walnuts on the pesto pizza, but I really wish there was another (veggie?) topping to add variety to each bite. The meatball pizza had good flavor, but the ricotta overwhelmed the mozzarella. It got a bit soggy. We've tried the diavola in the past and it was too spicy to finish. Overall very high quality pizza, but next time I might go with the margarita!

Yelp
So..tried to order a pizza via the web...but was unable to due to the website stating. That the restaurant was closed..major bummer however was able to order in the restaurant. I asked someone if they stopped taking online orders and they told me it really depends on the day. This is because they are concentrating on quality which I appreciate. I decided on the divolo which is spicy salami and mozzarella cheese with basil and tomato sauce. It took maybe about 20Mins or so.. They were doing a curbside service deal gave me a number I placed it on my windshield and then they brought it out to me. Nice and hot, cheese still gooey and melty enough for a cheese pull. Overall flavor was great nice chewy dough Salami was spicy but a bit salty, red sauce was fresh and bright. Delicious I mean definitely less soggy then my last few pizzas from Pupatella at least this one still had structure that it wasn't flopping over. I know the reston location just recently opened but I'm glad they are working out kinks I hope to frequent this location again soon since it so close by my work. Can't wait for online ordering.
