BEST PUPUSAS IN THE SOUTH BAY. I live in the Alum Rock neighborhood and have been disappointed with places around here (Chalateco, El Palacio) so I gave up.
During a recent craving after seeing a pupusa recipe in a cookbook, I decided to do a broader search and came across this gem. It is outdoors with no seating so takeout only. You order inside where they take card (also happens to be an insurance place).
We ordered 5 pupusas and 1 order of fried plantains for $22. WHAT A STEAL! What was mesmerizing was watching Ms. Delmy make the pupusas by hand right in front of you as you wait for your order. There was only 1 small order ahead of us and we probably only waited about 10 minutes. It went by fast because I was in awe as she makes everything and prepares multiple orders at the same time by herself.
I love supporting Local, small businesses, especially Latina and woman owned. But this is a double success because the food is one of the best I have ever had.
What I recommend:
-Chicharon con queso (pork rind with mild sauce and melted gooey cheese
- Queso con Loroco (melted cheese and zucchini blossom flower, finely chopped)
-Calabaza y queso (melted cheese and finely chopped zucchini)
My husband really loved his chicken and cheese one, too. The plantains are a huge order for $5 so definitely a share dish but she cuts the plantain and fries on the spot and serves with sweetened condensed milk (I asked for it on the side). It is the perfect dessert because it is sweet, crispy and a little savory.
The curtido was one of the best, it was so fresh and I loved the jalapeño slices. It was perfectly tangy (it's like a cole slaw to add freshness on top of your pupusa). The salsa is a mild tomato based sauce that was also medium thick which is just how I love it; some other places make it like juice and it is too watery.
Bottom line: A MUST! This will definitely become a regular in my rotation. Thank you, Delmy!
