25 Best San Jose and South Bay Area Restaurants | Eater SF

"This is a Salvadoran food truck with more than a dozen types of pupusas including pork skin, beans, mushrooms, spinach, zucchini, and loroco. The pupusas revueltas combine pork, beans, and cheese into one delectable vessel. What sets this pupuseria above the rest is the pair of smoky and savory salsas that come along with the curtido, which balances the meal with a fresh, vegetal crisp." - Octavio Peña

Google
Hands down the BEST pupusas I’ve ever had. Pupusería Delmy absolutely blew me away — the flavor was incredible, and what really stood out was how perfectly cooked and not oily they were. You could taste the quality in every bite. If you’re anywhere near the area, do yourself a favor and stop by. This place is a hidden gem and truly delivers authentic flavor without the grease. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
As for "atmosphere" well, they've done a great job of creating a shaded and comfortable area to eat for what's basically a food truck. My wife and I thought the pupusas were great... so savory and tasty that we ordered more to take home. We will be back!

Google
Best pupusas in San Jose!! I literally drive from Cupertino to come here since I haven't found anywhere with better! Parking is a little bit right, but honestly, I just use the Sherwin Williams lot since I come when they're closed and have never had a problem. They also have a lot of options and their sauce and curtido is awesome as well.

Mariana García

Google
Very disappointed about the service. They charged me twice for one agua fresca and when I told them about it they chose to hide instead, pretending they couldn’t hear me. That’s dishonest. I liked the food but I won’t be back soon. Wouldn’t recommend.

Google
I highly recommend the pupusas at this place. They’re delicious and they have excellent customer service. Very affordable compared to how expensive they are elsewhere.

Google
This is a hidden gem right on Monterey rd. The ladies make the pupusas as you order, and they are sooooo good. All that gooey cheese!!!! Been wanting to try this place for a while. Wish I had tried it sooner. I recommend, and definitely coming back!!

Google
OMG I had never tried this food. I was looking for tacos, I in up buying a couple of pupuserias. The beef and cheese. It was so good I definitely will going again service was quick, no line until I ordered. Food for quickie 4 star. Plus they were clean and masked up!

Nena

Google
Pupusas used to be good, not anymore. I ordered cheese pupusas, and they were so flat, hardly any cheese. Masa was dry too.

Yelp
Ordered from their doordash services. The pupusas were delicious they were a bit soggy but that's usually what happens when you order from DoorDash. I still enjoyed the food and the salsa that it came with was spicy and packed with flavor! I ordered a side of plantanos fritos. They came with lechera on the side. Soooo fire. Those were the highlight of my meal. Will definitely order again! Affordable and good portion sizes

Leti ..

Yelp
Happy for them for being busy. They take orders over the phone so they are ssssllllllooooowwwwww! Don't come hungry or plan on an hour wait.

Yelp
One of those spots you just seem to drive by in the middle of the night on Monterey road and always crowded. It's hard to find pupusa in San Jose and this is one of the few. Service was not too wet but not too slow, just okay. Pork skin/cheese/beans: 5/5 ($3.50) Jalapeño and cheese: 4/5 ($3.50) Beef and cheese: 3/5, meat was extremely dry ($4) They do not cheap out on the cold slaw sides.

Yelp
When you're craving pupusas and not willing to drive, delmy is the spot! The pupusas are always fresh and the prices can't be beat! I love the cheese ones the most.
google avatar

Joselyn M.

Yelp
Still one of my favorite options. Quick and conveniently close to me. Service is always good especially if you use DoorDash. Ambiance is small, but if you're looking for a quick grab... I highly recommend.

Yelp
The pupusas here are delicious and worth the wait! I was shocked that I was able to find a good pupusa spot in San Jose after I left San Francisco. Along with the pupusas they have tamales which are really good. They take phone orders so order before you get here! Service is decent, everything is made by hand so be patient. They do have tables and chairs to eat out front of their truck, but I typically get my dinner to go. This spot is cash only so be prepared! One point off for being cash only.

Yelp
Feels like Vegans not welcomed in this establishment. Constantly messing the order. 3 time already come on! The food is delicious, but you can't trust them. Need to check your order twice. Updated..They did replace my order, problem is getting home and then returning to back.
google avatar

Yelp
I don't understand how this place has 4 stars on yelp....I ordered two cheese pupusas because how can you mess up a cheese pupusa? Right??? I was very wrong. I was so hungry and so excited to eat my pupusas to be gravely disappointed. The masa was dry and there was NO CHEESE inside. It was basically a chunky dry tortilla with curtido and salsa. I will NEVER come back and I highly recommend people do NOT waste your hard earned coins on a pupusa from here in this economy. They also take FOREVER to give you your food. We waited 45 mins for 2 pupusas an a drink Gave it one star because the tamarind juice was good and so was the curtido

Yelp
So quick tip/update: order via online and do pick up if you're in a rush! Or if you prefer call in the order otherwise you will wait a long time because this place gets busy and rightfully so!! And mushroom is as epic as I could have ever imagined.

Linda V.

Yelp
I ordered on the phone and was told it was going to be ready in 20 minutes I arrived 30 minutes later and waited for my order even longer. A guy before me came and they immediately gave him his order. when I asked how longer they said 40 seconds and laughed and were making fun of me. And the guy taking orders serving salsa wasn't even wearing gloves ver unhygienic and horrible service.

Yelp
The pupusas are bomb.com and I'm definitely coming back here! Every order comes with salsa (spicy or mild) and plenty of curtido. They also sell some agua frescas and have free coffee. In general, there isn't much seating but I went when there were two spots for me and my partner. If you eat it there, you'll get a bottle of salsa and chose the spicy one - it was spicyand gooood! The masa for the pupusas are moist and the outside is crispy. You even get those little pieces of burnt cheese that oozed out and got caramelized on the grill. Yum. [Chicharron] This one was flavorful, cheesy, and delicious. Will def order this one again! [Carnitas] Tasty but I wouldn't order again so I could try another flavor. It was also cheesy but there wasn't much meat so some bites were just cheesy masa with strands of meat.

Yelp
Such a hidden gem. I didn't know what to order so I got the pork skin, chicken, cheese + jalepeno and cheese + mushroom. I love everything about their pupusas. It's flavorful and not too starchy. It also goes so well with the vegetable mixture and red sauce.
google avatar

Yelp
Pork Pupusa 5/5 , nice light crunch on the outside with a hot flavor town in the inside. Great pairing with beer. Since the food truck was at a brewery. The Salvador made tacos 4/5 was new experience for me and it was very refreshing. The fries combo 3/5 it was aight. I would come here again because the meal felt very healthy.
google avatar

Yelp
The salsa was really good as well as the food def recommend asada, beans, and chocaron all with cheese the ones I wasn't really a fan of was the jalapeño and chicken ones.

Yelp
I'm always looking for a good pupusa spot and found this place during the pandemic last year. It's a little hidden gem over on Monterey Rd. Super easy to miss but just look for the big pupusa banner! For the price and size, the pupusas are super worth it and yummy! They have a variety of pupusas combinations but ofc I stick with the revuelta. Good amount of cheese and filling and cooked to perfection. The side of curtido is good too! Different set up here, you pay inside at the insurance shop and they cook the pupusas outside in the food truck. Btw parking can be tricky. It's a small little lot and very tight to maneuver. I recommend you to park in the streets or over at O'riely's if possible.
google avatar

Ana C.

Yelp
Pupusas are very good here. I tried the chicharron & queso pupusa & the flavors were there. Enjoyed it with their salsa & cortido. Parking can be a little limited but still very good spot to get pupusas!
google avatar

Maynor M.

Yelp
Really hard not to see it while you drive by, they keep the place clean and traditional, chairs, tables and plants around, music and a great greeting smile, I ordered two pupusas revueltas and I was not disappointed, it was an explosion of flavor one bite after the other, they close late(10pm) so this will be a night spot for me! Keep up the great work!
google avatar

Aramiss M.

Yelp
Love their authentic papusas everytime!! Great service quality and ambiance! I can't wait to bring my family

Veronica C.

Yelp
Pupusas were delicious but the hands down winner was the yucca frita! Very busy at lunch time so call and place your order. Trying to park was the hunger games all over again.

Carina G.

Yelp
Las popusas están ricas. Variedad de opciones. Last orden fue rápida la locación limpia.

Yelp
I have no idea why I haven't written a review for this place yet! this is my favorite pupusa place near home! its right on Monterey Rd and if you blink you might miss it so pay attention LOL The pupusas are made fresh for every order and is flexible with payment transactions. I think one time I was able to Zelle them which was super helpful if you don't have cash or forgot your wallet. the Revuelta and Chicharrón con queso is my fave and also some extra curtido and salsa rojo! My mouth is so watery thinking about it! I am yet to try the plantains, I see a lot of people get it and I haven't had the chance to so next time I go I will definitely try that and write an update review!

Yelp
Great popuas!!! Unfortunately staff not so great and careless. Sad to witness how they affect someone's business and their workplace. I will need to try the location on 1st st.

Yelp
Nothing but wonderful things to say about this place. I had never tried it before, ordered on doordash to pick up. The food was fresh and delicious and the service was excellent. I walked in and no one was eating there at the moment but the music going and it was a vibe.
google avatar

Michelle G.

Yelp
The popusas are delicious, fresh, and the staff is friendly. I've only done takeout but they do have a few tables to eat there.
google avatar

Jennie B.

Yelp
[dine-in] Love, love, love this place. Can't go wrong with anything, although the revueltas are a crowded favorite and I loved the plantains the first time I got them (but the most recent time seemed to be a miss). Cash only, don't come too hungry because it takes a while (or call ahead), and parking is a pain, but so worth it every time.

Michelle M.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong the food is delicious but one of the employees so disrespectful and rude. This isn't the first time I've ordered there, some of the employees can be rude. My sister went to pick up my order from this place and they were trying to give her the wrong order. My sister told this gentleman that this is what I ordered and he got upset and rolled his eyes. That's straight up disgusting and disrespectful. They shouldn't treat their customers like this.

Alex M.

Yelp
I have never ever been more disappointed at a yucca order than I was at this place. The yucca was so soggy. The chicharrón was not your typical chicharrón, it was a strip that looked like bacon and basically was just fat. Not buying from them again
google avatar

Isobel G.

Yelp
I've been on the hunt for a good pupuseria in the South Bay since the spot I used to go to in Santa Clara burned down and this place is the best I've had. It's a hole in the wall off of Monterey highway and you sometimes have to go into the building to order and pay for your pupusas, but their food is awesome. I usually get their revueltas and the size of the pupusa is comparable to the price. They have many different combinations to try, but this definitely hits the spot when I'm craving pupusas.
google avatar

Rosie G.

Yelp
Delicious! I love the popusas and the fried bananas. I will be back for more I tried the revueltas, cheese, cheese and beans and plain beans. They have bananas dipped in chocolate and my daughter loved it! Order ahead because they do make them as you order them and must wait. Good good takes time!

Yelp
One of the places I have gone to regularly (like 3-4x a month) for a few years. They used to have a small food cart, now they have a beautiful new truck and a store front on South 1st! The growth over 4 years alone should tell you that they do pupusas extremely well. I usually get revueltas (chicharrón/pork rinds , black beans, and cheese) with extra curtido (pickled cabbage w/ carrots, chile, and oregano) and tomato sauce, they are always made to order and super filling. My favorite part is the cheese that escapes and gets super crispy. I've tried a lot of different combinations and they've all been great. The agua de maracuyá/pasiflora/granadilla/parcha/passion fruit is my preferred drink it's refreshing and has real passion fruit. The downside is you will have to wait so if you're in a rush call in your order at least 30 minutes in advance (this was my wait the last few times). The wait is always worth it and I always look forward to my next meal here!
google avatar

Dianna N.

Yelp
My first time here so I was a little confused about the setup. You go inside the storefront to place your order, and then wait outside for your number to be called. I don't have the biggest appetite, so 2 pupusas were enough to be a meal for me. Frijoles con queso (beans and cheese) $3.00: Beans and cheese is my favorite type of pupusa. Doesn't disappoint here! I did find the curtido (the "cole slaw") a little too spicy. I just need to keep a bottle of La Vics orange sauce at home to eat with pupusas. Queso con ajo (cheese with garlic) $3.00: It tastes exactly as it sounds - cheese and garlic. But this showed me how much I need the beans to help balance the cheese. I would skip this one next time. ***** My Star Ratings: 1 Star - Terrible. Just thinking about it makes me angry. 2 Stars - Meh. Unlikely for me to return. 3 Stars - OK. Open to coming back, but wouldn't go out of my way to. 4 Stars - Yummy! Will definitely return if I haven't already. 5 Stars - AMAZING!!! Would plan my day or even a trip around eating here.

Livier M.

Yelp
Loved that I can call ahead and place order for lunch. Especially with my short lunch period! You can also pay with card which was nice because I forgot to bring some cash. Pupusas we're really tasty and they do not skimp on the curtido and salsa! Probably the best ones I've had since I lived in LA. Solid 9/10

Yelp
Give me pupusa I don't eat pork and bae who has never been here said some pupuserias only sell pork ones. Thankfully they have choices. Pork Beef chicken I think shrimp and veggies or beans and cheese. The wait is a bit long but. You know what they say about good things. Any way I ordered 3 pork pupusa but not the pork skins which were the ones bae wanted and I order two chicken and cheese and one steak and cheese. As I said this was my first time having a pupusa. So initially I'm a little skeptical as I bit into it,the texture and consistency is so different. from the seasoned chicken the melted cheese and the dough it's packed into. I added the toppings and the sauce and to my next one and it all came together like a marriage made in heaven. Since I tried it if it wasn't that I'm in the juice cleans I'd go back today and have some more. I did enjoy the chicken and cheese more than the steak, but it wasn't disappointing either. Call me a pupusa guy now. It's time I learn numbers in Spanish to cause when they calling out order I'm not stuck there like. Is that mines lol

Yelp
I love pupusas and this place really hit the spot for me. BUT be prepared to wait, you can actually call ahead and order them drive out and pick it up because that's what we did. I knocked off one star because we did call ahead and they gave us an estimated wait time of 30 mins, we arrived maybe 40 mins after but they weren't working on our order yet so my boyfriend waited maybe another 20-30 mins. So just a heads up, wait time might be longer than stated None the less we were really happy with how they tasted tjough. We ordered the cheese and garlic, fried pork skin and cheese, chicken and cheese, and carnitas and cheese and honestly all of them were good but my favorite will always be the fried pork skin and cheese! I love the little sauce and cabbage slaw that comes with it. It just amps up the flavor to a whole another level. It's very flavorful without it but I like the extra kick it gives it and the different textures. We will definitely be back!

Yelp
BEST PUPUSAS IN THE SOUTH BAY. I live in the Alum Rock neighborhood and have been disappointed with places around here (Chalateco, El Palacio) so I gave up. During a recent craving after seeing a pupusa recipe in a cookbook, I decided to do a broader search and came across this gem. It is outdoors with no seating so takeout only. You order inside where they take card (also happens to be an insurance place). We ordered 5 pupusas and 1 order of fried plantains for $22. WHAT A STEAL! What was mesmerizing was watching Ms. Delmy make the pupusas by hand right in front of you as you wait for your order. There was only 1 small order ahead of us and we probably only waited about 10 minutes. It went by fast because I was in awe as she makes everything and prepares multiple orders at the same time by herself. I love supporting Local, small businesses, especially Latina and woman owned. But this is a double success because the food is one of the best I have ever had. What I recommend: -Chicharon con queso (pork rind with mild sauce and melted gooey cheese - Queso con Loroco (melted cheese and zucchini blossom flower, finely chopped) -Calabaza y queso (melted cheese and finely chopped zucchini) My husband really loved his chicken and cheese one, too. The plantains are a huge order for $5 so definitely a share dish but she cuts the plantain and fries on the spot and serves with sweetened condensed milk (I asked for it on the side). It is the perfect dessert because it is sweet, crispy and a little savory. The curtido was one of the best, it was so fresh and I loved the jalapeño slices. It was perfectly tangy (it's like a cole slaw to add freshness on top of your pupusa). The salsa is a mild tomato based sauce that was also medium thick which is just how I love it; some other places make it like juice and it is too watery. Bottom line: A MUST! This will definitely become a regular in my rotation. Thank you, Delmy!

Yelp
This is my second time here. The service is really slow and the ladies have a really bad attitude with all the customers they spoke to. I waited around 15 minutes for my order to get taken. Hoping it's not like this every time.

Richard V.

Yelp
First off this location is cash only even though there web says contactless payment is accepted, we had to go to an atm to get cash, saw a couple customers walk away for that reason. With that being said pupusas are really good, a lot of different choices, salsa could be spicier, both salsas were bland, service was good, location is ok, will definitely be stopping by again.

Yelp
There appears to be TWO YELP ENTIRES for Pupuseria Delmy on Monterey Hwy location. I'm putting my review down for both! NOTE: This place shares a location with a spanish DMV services trailer and there is simply no-to-little parking for the restaurant/food trailer at about 6-7 parking spaces on the property. We parked right on Monterey Hwy with a large NO PARKING ANYTIME sign. Be aware that parking on the Hwy is illegal, dangerous and not advised and you might be ticketed if police drive by. Also note that parking at other establishments next door isn't appreciated and you might be asked to move your car, as we witnessed. That being said, the two ladies who work this location speak little to no english. PLEASE be patient or ask some of the people waiting for their orders....to order for you if you can't speak spanish. Download Google Translate to your phone and type in your order (English/Spanish), in the worst case to show the lady taking the order. My husband and I speak a bit of spanish and prices right now are $3.00 each for Pupusas (as of 7/2023). They have cold drinks and other food options, but not a full menu with prices for all they offer. There is 4% additional 'service charge' for Phone payments/CC/Debit cards. Cash will cost you less (there is a sign on the window stating this). We waited for our Revelta Pupusas that arrived in a simple to-go container with a small bag of Curtito (pickled veggies). Sauces are on the table. They give you plastic utensils--NO PLATES--you can eat out of the plastic container and we cut ours in two to create 'make shift' plates for each of us. This location seats literally about 8 people, so there isn't room for large parties. You are literally eating steps from a busy hwy, so this isn't a spot that is fancy. Note these are all cooked by hand and it takes time: it isn't McDonalds where they come off the grill in 5 minutes. We waited about 10-15 minutes on a Saturday and ours were hot, very tasty and we'll be back.

Liz T.

Yelp
You want to wait an hour for your food? Come here. Only 3 people ahead of us and we had to wait 45+ minutes to get our food.
google avatar

Giancarlo B.

Yelp
Hard to find great pupusas in SJ, so glad this truck exists. Affordable, tasty, great choices, and friendly service! Highly recommend.
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Good food shut service and they are slow. Which keeps me from returning They leave u eating for ever to order when there's multiple ppl in the truck then to get ur food is at least 20-35 min :(
google avatar

Beyonce V.

Yelp
When I visited it was amazing, the service was amazing and the food was so good. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone. It's kind of in a sketchy neighborhood buttt y'all can't tell me that the best tasting food isn't always in the sketchy areas
google avatar

Sunil R.

Yelp
Really good Pupusas! This is a tiny food truck that seems to be very popular based on the number of folks waiting to pick up food. The ladies who helped me out seemed super nice. Note they only take cash or Zelle. They messed up my order but that's not a biggie, it was still super good.

Mireya N.

Yelp
Loveeee I always pre order for pickup because it can get a little busy I wish they were located in a bigger lot for parking since it's right next to business. But I only do pick up so it works until someone blocks me in :(. But food is always fresh. They need a better payment system the past couple times their card reader hasn't been working or something is broken but I mean the food is good just bring cash!
google avatar

Jahseh O.

Yelp
Food is good but they take double the time they tell you. They don't seem to care either.

jessica s.

Yelp
Best pupusas in the bay !! I enjoy them very much they come fresh, hot, and at an affordable price point. Made to order.
google avatar

Yelp

google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Good pupusas!! Call ahead for large orders. The sauce n cortido were bomb!!! Enjoy them
