Pupuseria El Comalito

This restaurant serves truly authentic Salvadorian food (I know because I went with a real Central American!). From the moment we walked in, it felt like stepping outside of North America… soft Latin music playing, football on the TVs, and beautiful live plants throughout the space. I ordered the tilapia frita, and it was very filling: a large, well-cooked fish with generous sides of rice and salad. The portions were big, and the bill came to about $20 per person, which is great value for the quality and amount of food. The service was friendly, respectful, and fast. Definitely worth a visit.

Great place, large menu and plenty of seating options. Only had 2 pupusa (chicken and pork each with cheese) but they were delicious. Lots of other food dessert and drink options.

I stumbled upon this place when I was driving around looking for a bite to eat with the family. I've had Salvadoran food before, but ask my mom what she thought about a good place to have Salvadoran food. She said she knew about this one restaurant, so we checked it out and I thought I would give it a try. I swung by, and they were empty (too late for lunch and a tad early for dinner). I walked right up to the counter and got seated right away. I got three pupusas, and they were ready in ten minutes. The pork & cheese one was fantastic and super gooey. The pork one was by far my favorite with a nice mix of meat and cheese. The bean one was my least favorite as it was a tad dry. The pupusas themselves were fresh, hand-made, and were bigger than I expected. I kind of just wish I had gotten two of them as three just made me so full. But I could not stop eating. I also had sopa de res (beef soup), and we also got yuca con chicharrón (casaba & fried pork). Everything was so yummy! If I'm around this part of town, I'd definitely stop here again. I'm not disappointed at all with this place. Till next time.

Server was incredibly nice. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time. The food was so good. We had pupusa, some "turnover" thing and a chicken sandwich. All were amazing and the pupusa was the best Ive had. Everything is so affordable too, it's almost crazy. My sandwich resembled a ban mi, but had a literal entire chicken breast on it. 6/5 def recommend.

We are from New York they give us very late the food and they don’t give too much chicken, and the tortillas are not made in the comal they look like like from other day

Staff provided excellent service. Our waitress was very attentive and our order was placed correctly. The pupusas were delicious and reasonably priced. The beverages (Horchata & Tamarindo) were also good. My husband and I ordered a variety of pupusas from the menu and we were not dissapointed. There were a lot of good pupusa options to choose from and they were all tasty. The only reason they don't get a 5 star review from us is because the place was a bit chilly inside (we went in January) and it felt like the heater was not on at a proper temperature.Also, be aware if you order the “tamal de elote” that comes with crema (the crema is an extra $2 up charge and the menu doesn’t tell you that anywhere). Usually in other places, the tamal de elote comes with crema on the side for the same price so this was a surprise for us. Other than this, I do recommend it.

Had a great meal here. Highly recommend if you are looking for a casual but delicious meal! Can’t wait to go back and try more of the pupusas.

We visited on a Sunday night. It was crowded and busy, but we were seated promptly. The server was nice and attentive. She took our order promptly. They had ran out of lettuce and were substituted with ‘pico de gallo’. The food was good. There’s plenty of seating outdoors, but it’s closed during the cold months. It’s probably nice to visit during the warmer months to enjoy outdoors seating. It was still cold when we visited and outdoors seating had not been opened yet.

The best place to eat pupusas, The location in Langley park used to be good too, but the quality decreased and price increased so I'm not using that location anymore, but have been enjoying this one at 6100 Baltimore Ave, staff is amazing even when they are packed. OVERRATED,OVERPRICED, and the portions SUCK. I know employees are hard working but 19 for 2 small pieces of steak that look slapped on the tray..Bro I got more alvacado than STEAK LMFAOOOO is this a joke? ik work hard but cmon now where the protein after my workout it's giving kids meal

El comalito is a family friendly restaurant. There is plenty of seating inside and they also have a big patio.They have plenty of parking, Their service has improved in the last year all the servers have been kind and friendly. I love their empanadas, the pupusas are good but My boyfriend he and his family loves them. They also have more than 10 different flavors of pupusas. I wish they had a more traditional curtido and salsa, but it's alright. El comalito definitely have the most amazing horchata in the dmv. We are regulars of this place, every other weekend we will go there or order take out because they are very consistent on the food.

Good food, great service, good prices. We try to go early Sundays as it gets really busy after 12pm. My favorite drink is the fruit salad juice. It's a great place to take your family. No alcoholic drinks

I ordered pupusas from El Comalito because like most Salvadorans, I need to know where the best pupusas are at all times. Yes, we all claim our moms make the best ones but these were a close second. They didn't skimp on filling and included lots of curtido and salsa de tomate. They are also inexpensive and my order was accurate and delicious. Take it from someone who eats pupusas at least one a week, El Comalito nails it every time.

the best pupusas but they don't give much sauce or curtido. some of the stuffs are very nice while others are rude. always very busy sometimes you have to wait in a line to get a tablet.

The pupusas were delicious--with lots of options. Service was pretty fast, and everyone was pleasant. And the vibe to the place was nice. It's not fancy, but it didn't need to be. We'll definitely be going back.

Went here for an early lunch on a Saturday. It was pretty crowded. The horchata was super good (kinda too sweet but still really good). The pupusas were also quite good but the tomato sauce on the side was like a really weak tomato juice instead of a thick sauce. The waiter (Guillermo) was super nice and helpful.

If it wasn't for the waste that is produced by serving everything on styrofoam or plastic. Then I might have given them more stars. Came here on a Sunday afternoon. They were super packed and waited like 5-10mins to be seated. Staff was friendly but busy. I did not like the Corn tamales. Good Pupusa options and they were good even though they are served in styrofoam bowls and plates and plastic forks. What a waste. Orchata was good.

What a lively restaurant with a huge menu of authentic El Salvadorian food! Between the music, the families, and the fresh delicious food, I so enjoyed my trip. The pupusas were delicious.

If you like fresh and hot pupusas this is the place to go. The atmosphere is very family friendly, the night that I visited every table seem to consist of children having fun. The menu is very detailed so anyone could place a order without needing to speak Spanish. I was in a party of six so we had a wait to be seated, but we were able to entertain ourselves with the wall art and the map of El Salvador. Sunday afternoon is busy so pack your patience. The menu has a lot of options but you must have the pupusas if your in a Pupuseria. The flavors of the fresh ingredients let you know that everything is made on site daily from scratch. The drink that everyone seems to like was the fruit cocktail, my favorite is marañon and here it was delicious. This is a busy place but I found it worth the wait. I hope they don't change a thing, no franchise is needed.

Friday Night and the employees are not taking orders at 8:35pm. I understand everybody want to go home but working on Restaurant business is this way. So disappointed about this place. Hope I never come back again.

The staff is super friendly and nice, but I didn't care for the food. The pupusas are oily and the curtido has no flavor. The chicken tamale was bland as well. The yuca con chicharrones was just awful. The yuca was not freshly fried and neither were the chicharrones. Everything tasted old and it was tough to eat. Loved the service, hated the food.

I like El Comalito, but I wouldn't say it's one of the best places or Pupuseria in DC. El Comalito is casual, family friendly, and the service is good. The pupusas are good. I've been here multiple time and the last time I went I ordered a sopa de res. What I didn't like about the soup is that the meat seemed to be overcooked and it looked black on the outside. Their juices are very good. I like and I'll keep coming back when I'm in the area, but I feel like there are some areas of improvement.

I've been eating pupusas and horchata all my life. We ordered the chicken pupusas, pupusas with loroco, pupusas with chipilin and cheese, chicken sandwich, horchata, and marañon. Everything was delicious. The staff there are friendly too. Prices are reasonable when compared to other Salvadoran restaurants in the area. The interior is spacious. Parking may be an issue on the weekends though.

Ok, I'm now officially hooked on Salvadorean food! Stopped in for dinner after work with a coworker, and enjoyed a delicious meal of pupusas and plaintains with beans and crema. This place is nothing too exciting decor wise, but the servers are very friendly, and the food is cheap and yummy! What's not to like? Service was a bit slow, but not too horrible. I'll definitely be coming back here to enjoy more delicioso pupusas...can't beat just the plain queso.

I walked here at 2:30 in the afternoon from an Ethiopian restaurant next door and ordered a single cheese and flower papusa to go. The order came with plastic bags of cabbage and tomato juice, with the papusa in a plastic clam shell that released the fragrance of sweet corn flour to my nostrils. Inside was an unctuous molten cheese that was perfectly seasoned for the unseasoned exterior, which had the fun affect of changing the taste of a bite with each chew as flavors mingled. The few bites I was able to manage convinced me this was a destination worth revisiting.

Finally, a Papuseria in my neighborhood! This place is huge! It's housed in, what used to be, a stand-alone Fast Food Restaurant with a drive thru. It is a newer restaurant, in old restaurant space. Every time I go, it's packed with Salvadorian families. They have a wait staff and everything. Including the covered-wrap-around-patio, this place must easily seat over 100. I usually get carryout. It's located right next to Shagga Ethiopian so, when I go here, I feel like I'm cheating on Shagga. But it's worth it! The papusas here are better than Irene's, and perhaps better than most. Not all of them, (I didn't care for their Revueltas) but the Ayote papusa is my favorite! The Ayote is a squash and cheese papusa that most places don't carry. It's Delicious! The Chicharron papusa is also good. They have several types of papusas that most places don't, such as Zanahoria con queso and Chipilín con queso. I also especially liked the Cabbage here, more that most places. It has a nice spicy kick to it. Papusas are good cheap food, that are also easily re-heatable, which is why I always order 8 of them at a time. They are usually only $1.50 each and 2-3 should be filling. They also have Plantanos con crema and Tamales, along with soups, and milk shakes. All in all, the papusas here are 25% smaller than most places, but have more filling... They're also a little greasier too. But hey, Fat Is Flavor, and these papusas are mighty darn tasty. They are best when eaten while the cheese is still hot enough to burn you.

Great food. Got the steak dish and it was so good. Always amazes me how well Hispanic cuisine is prepared and presented. Excellent 5-star service, the hosts were very nice.

Stopped here for lunch it was fairly busy, I ordered one pupusa revuelta and it was tasty. The cortido sucked so bad it was freezing cold and no seasoning in it, it was basically cabbage and a little bit of pepper stored in the fridge with a tiny bit of vinegar. The sauce wasn't good either it was so watery and the sauce shouldn't be watery it should be a lot more thicker. The horchata was very good as well just how I like it. I also got carne asada with rice and salad, the carne was very excellent I honestly loved the carne I would recommend that , rice was okay , salad was okay. To cut my carne I received plastic utensils, I broke my fork from the pressure of cutting the carne. Overall I would come back again for the carne and nuegados as well, I love those.

I been calling to place an order for over 30 minutes , there is no way someone is putting an order for that length of time and when i get there the place is empty. The hang up the phone so people wont call to put orders. Once you get ther you see someone chatting on the phone with his girlfriend or something. The pupusas are the best you can get in the PG area the rest of the menu not so Much. I like to put my order in advance and because they keep their phone hang up i will give it only 3 stars.

Absolutely horrible the worst chicken ever I swear they must have given me spoiled chicken it was hard as rubber unfortunately I didn't taste it until I left the establishment I wish I had try to eat it there because I definitely would have gotten my money back but the chicken made me nauseous and it was very hard to chew I gave up and threw it away was a total waste of time and money I waited about 10 to 15 minutes

This is my second Hispanic restaurant I've dined at to have dinner. The service was great. Our bilingual server was on top of her game with questions concerning the menu and all of that. I ordered three pupusas. One with pork & cheese and the other two with cheese only. There was a tomato sauce and cabbage that accompanied it. It was delicious! To finish it all off I had a large Horchata drink, my favorite!

Being an aficionado to Central American cuisine , I enjoy great tasting pupusas. "El Comalito" demonstrated a 3 star performance based on food , environment, price range, parking, and costumer service. In regards to food , there are no complains. The ingredients were fresh-cut , cooked, and served adequately. Secondly, the environment is relaxing with sufficient space both indoors and outdoors. There was some trash laying on the floor at the outdoors patio, but nothing too serious. Speaking in matters of product fee, a package of 6 pupusas ( flavor-varied) , one fruit punch ( beverage with authentic fruit slices on the top) and one medium sized horchata,; $17.00 should be more than sufficient. The restaurant maintains a generous condition in this aspect. It also provides a great variety in parking space, meaning that parking was not a hassle. Nonetheless, considering my girlfriend and I went to eat at nighttime , lighting was not sufficient. The parking lot needs more light poles to assure a safe environment for both staff and the clientele. Lastly, costumer service was efficient, but not detail-oriented. The waitress took our order quickly , but did not check on us during the eating process and took a ridiculous amount of time on bringing back the change from the paid bill. No harsh tone was ever applied on her voice , but had the the fence of walking out on the costumer half way through a sentence. In all honesty, this is the weakest area at the moment . This restaurant has a lot of potential , but needs to recognize the essential sense of costumer satisfaction . With this said , I recommend my adventurous food lovers to give "El Comalito" a go !

There are several locations but this one overall is my favorite. No long lines to wait in to be seated, walk right in and get served. Food is always delicious and soccer is always on the televisions to enjoy while you eat.

Great food! I love their pastelitos de pollo and pupusas. I've never had chicken pupusas and the ones they make are so good. They serve typical Salvadoran food which I can appreciate since allot of Salvadoran eateries blend in Mexican food. Service can be slow though. Don't expect to eat ur food within 20 mins of ordering! So if you're starving, not the place to go. But the pupusas are one of the best I've, so maybe worth the wait, just not when you're so hungry that you'd kill someone for a pupusa.

Ok... I have lived in this area for over 5 years and never noticed this place...I know some years ago this location used to be a Mexican place...but anyways I was sitting in traffic thinking about how much I did NOT want to cook tonight, yup one of those days. And I randomly look out of my window and see this spot.....I have not had pupusas in yeaaaarssssssssss.... and I decided to stop in the place was packed. The staff were super friendly, and the prices were extremely generous. Needless to say I am in a bit of a food coma...but if loving this place is wrong I dont want to be right. 2 thumbs up.

What a find! We moved into the neighborhood a couple of years ago and pass it every day to and from work...so glad we final came in. The Pupusas and tamales were delicious. When we came the pupusas took awhile to get but worth the wait. (Found out the delay was due to a number of to-go orders ahead of us.) The only meh thing was that they don't have any hot sauce hotter than Tabasco sauce. So glad we came in and can't wait to come back.

Not suitable for young children. Came for carry out ordered six pupusAs & one dessert. It took 45 minutes and they lost my order. When I noticed five people Who ordered after me received their food before I approached them and they said everything was fine. I receive my food I asked what was the problem he replied I'm sorry we are busy. This is my first and my last time coming to this restaurant. I tHink this restaurant is completely disorganized.

I come here every now and then and I think I have to say that the pupusas here are the best pupusas I have tasted so far. I have also had the pollo asado, which is grilled chicken with tortillas, salad and rice. They have a good variety of Salvadoran food and drinks. The servers are friendly and the environment is clean. They even have a large outdoor patio where you can eat. Thumbs up!

Their pupusas & nuegados are great! In my opinion, some of the most authentic-tasting ones in the area. I love their take-out option but also have enjoy dinning in as well. It is definitely a casual dinning atmosphere. David, one of the waiters there, is phenomenal! My family & I always request to be helped by him when we go. Never had any issues with my food or service. Definitely recommend if you're looking to try some Salvadoran cuisine!

I have to agree with many of the other reviews, that the staff here is incredibly sweet and friendly and kind, but the food is kind of sub-par. I came in with a friend who is clearly a regular. I honestly can't tell you which of the Pupusas we ordered because they all tasted the same. They weren't really very filling either, so though the check between the two of us was only $14, I felt like I could have eaten three times as much.

It'll put you in a "little coma" . . . of deliciousness! El Comalito is a pupuseria (Spanish for "place where they sell pupusas"). A pupusa (Spanish for "thing you can buy at a pupuseria") is . . . I don't know, go get one for yourself. They're really good. I think the secret ingredient is lard. Also recommended is the chicharrones, which is pork that has had the absolute loving damn hell fried out of it, along with yucca that accompanied the pork on its nightmare hell-journey. Their mutual torment results in a tasty dish that will have you rolling around your bed in agony. I'm no pupusa expert - I've never even been to El Salvador (Spanish for "The Salvador"), but I've tried the offerings of a few of these places, and El Comalito (Spanish for "little coma") is my favorite.

Affordable, healthy Salvadoran food in a relaxed atmosphere. My hen dish (gallina horneada) came with rice, garnishes of watercress, cucumber, radish and tomato, a bowl of curtido (salvadoran coleslaw), a bowl of red sauce, and two YUMMY gorditas (thick corn tortillas) on the side. My agua fresca - melon con pin~a (pineapple) - was delicious!! No sugar added, just the juice of fresh fruit. My husband said his pupusas were really good - he had the revuelta, the queso con loroco, and the ayote (squash). He also said the horchata was alright, not great. We visited on a Saturday night, so it was PACKED. The service was really slow, and my order came out 5-10 minutes ahead of my husband's order. It was a warm evening, so it was really nice to sit on the patio. I only wished they had a license to sell margaritas! This is a solid option for satisfying comfort food in the Hyattsville/Riverdale Park area (just up the street from Busboys and Poets). No frills, just good food.

I enjoyed my dinner here. The prices were great, the place was clean, and the pupusas were good. I especially liked the pupusas because they were flavorful on their own. I didn't have to add anything to them unless I wanted to. That's rare for the pupusas I've had in this area before.

Delicious food for your money! I've been going to this place for a few years and have seen some changes on the remodeling and possibly new management. It looks a lot better now from the inside and out. The service is decent but the staff are not always English speaking so topping off your drink might require attention. I usually get the chicken tamales to-go because they're the best I've had! One time they ran out though but I ordered the Fried Tilapia which then became my favorite. I have dined in a few times and no complaints on the food as well as its plate presentation. If you're on a date and looking to spend $30 for two entrees, two juice drinks, and three tamales--look no further!

The pupusas are filled well and the drinks are good. Their regular dishes are okay but the portions are lacking. Also, pick up orders are close to impossible. They never answer the phone.

This has been one of the worst restaurant Ive been with my family. If you plan to go, eat before you go, wait time is long. Bathrooms were very filthy and while eating a HUGE ROACH approached our table. Having the name "EL COMALITO AUTHENTIC PUPUSERIA" fits too big. One of the worst pupusas ever. You can taste how they add flour to the cheese to make it more abundant. If you plan to order a Yuca with Chicharron make sure you got some good teeth to take a bite. Chicharrones were super hard and over deep fried. We had to send them back, it was not eatable. The only reason I would give them a 1 star is because their fruit juice was good. I have to say they should better their services and be much more organized in seating clients in order.

I knew this place was good as soon as I entered and smelled the strong scent of burnt mateca and fabuloso. Another good indicator of delicious food is the fact that there wasn't a non-salvadorean in sight. The Pupusas are small and delicious. I typically get revuelta, queso con frijol, or queso con loroco, all good. They have good horchata and fresco here too. I recommend this place for regular ordering but not sit in. You'll smell like grease if you sit in there for too long.

Delicious fresh house made. Cheap cheap cheap eats. Cheese, carnitas and chicken are all very good. Sit outside on the patio and relax.

Their pususas are AWESOME, the best in hyattsville second being "la chiquita" although their cabbage is not seasoned well (flavorless).... if you want pupusas near hyattsville/riverdale/college park/bladensburg area this is the place to go!! I I get the spinach & cheese, or bean & cheese this is a vegetarian meal on a budget! They are done within 15 mins of order (when you call in) My review is merely on the food itself not the service, i have not actually dined in.
