"This chain of restaurants run by the Hernandez sisters might sell the best pupusas in town. The College Park standby is a popular stop on Maryland’s pupusa highway. Order takeout or dine-in at the restaurant, which has an additional location in Wheaton." - Tierney Plumb, Eater Staff

Stopped in while taking my terp back to school and had a delicious meal. I had the shredded chicken sandwich, my daughter had the avocado pupusas, and my husband had a steak and egg tortilla thingy. Everything was really tasty and the service was really friendly.

Stopped to grab dinner here, we were attended by a nice gentlemen with tats on his right arm, very attentive. Overall the food was great, I got the "Papas Locas" they were really crunchy, maybe a little too crunchy for my tasting but can't complain too much. I've been coming here for years and they're pretty consistent with the good food.

Google
First time having El Salvadoran cuisine. I enjoy exploring food from all over and decided to explore this joint while visiting town. Food was very flavorful, price was average, service was good. For some reason during my visit, it felt quite warm inside the restaurant. Didn't feel like the AC was on or blowing any cold air.

Ray Moreno

Google
Above average pupasa spot with lots of authentic el Salvadorian food optionsz the service was good and the pupusas were tasty. I had two loroco & one cheese pupusa. The salsa and picked cabbage was spot on.

Eldar H.

Google
Great place for El Salvadorian food. Tastes homemade. I've never had pupusas before, so ordering the right stuff was a bit confusing. There aren't too many signs written in English, so I hope you paid attention in Spanish class. Will be back, it was quite good. Portion size wise, if you're having sides or appetizers, two pupusas is plenty of food.

1st visit to this location, will definitely be coming back to try other items. Dining area is very intimate, and very clean. I would recommend trying this location, even for a quick business meetup.

Google
Great value authentic Salvadorian food with poor service. Check your order before leaving FOOD: Fantastic and highly recommend Piscadera La Familiar (meat Sampler)- the steak was fantastic very moist and well seasoned. Highly recommend. However the Churizo sausage was the driest I have ever had and the chicken, though it had fantastic flavor, was also dry. Came with delicious flavored rice and romaine lettuce with tomatoes but no sauce for the salad. Revuelta- very good traditional appetizer. They messed up the order and provided 3 plain revueltas instead of 2x revuelta and 1x revuelta con loroco Tamales- tried the fried tamale de etolle which was fantastic (think fried cornbread) but did not have any sauce or meet and the steamed tamale de Gallina which had great flavor Empanadas de Platano leche - order this desert and only realized they did not provide it once we had driven away from the restaurant. SERVICE: unfortunately very slow and poor. Ordered to go and the dishes were ready over 30min after the estimate (in total nearly an hour and a half after ordering). Poor communication of when the order would be ready so had to just wait inside during covid. Each item was prepared at a different time with the time between the first dish and the last dish being ready was more than 30min apart leading to half the food being cold by the time we finally received the full order. Overall: highly recommend for the quality of the food but be prepared for poor service and be sure to check your order before leaving.

Love love love the pupusas from here! I personally always get de arroz 😋😍 & the papás locas are to die for 😝 omg and for desert ? The nuegados con miel !!! My family and I always have to come at least twice a month if not three 😉

Yelp
Yesterday, I came into La Familiar for lunch, and overall, it was a satisfying experience. The first thing I noticed upon entering was the cleanliness of the restaurant. It was spotless and had a welcoming atmosphere. Additionally, it wasn't too busy when I arrived, which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered three bean and cheese pupusas with rice flour and a chicken baleada. The food, in general, was really good. The baleada, in particular, stood out. The homemade tortilla was incredibly tasty, and the chicken inside was juicy and flavorful. The only downside was the pupusas. While they were full of cheese, they seemed to be lacking in beans. Ideally, I would have liked a more even 50/50 split between beans and cheese to fully enjoy the traditional flavors of this dish. Despite the restaurant not being too busy, the food took a while to come out, which was a bit surprising. I would have appreciated a quicker service time.

Nina Z.

Yelp
I love being able to grab pupusas here for a quick meal. Plus they have the biggest selection I know of in the area. Thursday night we got a few different kinds: revueltas, chicharron con queso, jalapeño con queso and pollo con queso. The cheese they used this time was different than the last we came but it was still good. Super reasonably priced and delicious! I'll be back and hope you try this place too.

Yelp
I happen to be close to College Park and stopped by this food truck for Barria tacos. I expected better. Small portion for $15 and the meat was not well shredded. Oh well

Meghan Q.

Yelp
First place I ever had pupusas and favorite place to go back. When I'm feeling basic, nothing beats biting into a hot, fresh cheese pupusa. The slaw and sauce are pretty good too, but if you're not in the mood for the extras, just going straight for the bread is pretty delicious. I've been to their other locations too, but this was my first so its got a special place in my heart. Whenever I'm in College Park I make it a point to try and stop here. FYI $5 minimum for cards, which seems like it shouldn't matter, but 2 cheese pupusas is less than that, so its a price performer too!

Reane S.

Yelp
Good pupusas! We were hungry for lunch & decided to eat here as we noticed that the place was almost full of patrons which is always a good sign! We ordered queso , chicharron ,revueltas & a couple of combinations of those which were served with the traditional cabbage salad. They were deliciously filling and satisfying! We also ordered a nice Horchata to wash it all down. 4 stars because you eat on paper plates & use plastic ware but otherwise, the place was clean and service was friendly and expedient.

Kyle L.

Yelp
I had my first pupusa a few weeks ago I'm at this College Park location. I didn't dislike it, but it has an unexpected taste. There was something about biting into soft bread with "mushy" beans and harder meat that felt weird to me but I can be picky. The dishes are fairly priced and come out quickly. It's not my type of cuisine but I'm glad I tried it.

Nikita D.

Yelp
The best place to get authentic Salvadorian food. They have a wide variety of papusas with all the combinations you can dream of. We ordered the beans/queso, chicken/queso, and jalapeño/queso. The food arrived very tasty and was hot so I knew that everything was fresh. I opened the papusa to stuff with the cabbage slaw that comes with the dish and it had the perfect cheese pull. They also have a selection of desserts and and drinks. The server suggested the fruit salad drink which was very refreshing and not too sweet. It had chunks of freshly cut fruit on the top and the drink itself was like a fruit punch.

Angela P.

Yelp
The papusas are amazing, a pretty decent price, and always served hot and fresh. Service can be a little slow and you have to go up to the counter robot, even when seated at a table, but a solid neighborhood spot.

Yazmin C.

Yelp
This is my 2nd time in Maryland and 2nd time eating here. This is our go to for el Salvadoran food. Food is delish! Highly recommend

Megan M.

Yelp
Love love love this place. I try to order at least once every other week because I'm addicted to the papitas locas and flan. This place has some of the best flan I've ever had in my life. I also really enjoy the burritos and pupusas here. You really can't go wrong :)

Kendoll C.

Yelp
We ordered a large to-go meal, during the quarantine. Despite our large order, our meal was ready in about 25 minutes, with no wait when we entered. Friendly service, everyone was masked up, and maintained safe interactions. They packaged everything really well-so it was still nice and hot by the time we got home. I was pretty impressed by the quantity of food provided per plates-though honestly the prices are a bit higher than other pupusarias in the area & the tastes didn't completely impress A breakdown of the food: Pupusas: Jalapeno- very delicious, the sauteed jalapenos provide a flavor pop that paired nicely with the cheese-out of all the veggie ones we tried, I think this one had the most stand out taste. Camaron (shrimp)-it did not have the traditional taste, and I honestly wouldn't mix shrimp & pupusas again because the profiles didn't go together cohesively, but it was a good one time unique try Chicarron con queso-barely any chicarron (it was more like I ordered a plain cheese and a tiny piece snuck in) Queso-traditional is always delicious Queso con Loroco-Loroco is one of my favorite pupusa fillings, it can't be done incorrectly, always delicious Queso con Chiplin (Legume leaf)-this pupusa was packed with leaves, I wish the others had as much filling- it was a delightfully filled bite, with a good taste, but doesn't beat loroco ;) Side of Plantains-not the juiciest I've had, but worth it as an add on Chicarron con Yuca-I was so excited for this dish, & was majorly let down-the yuca was delicious (thick chunky pieces, fried perfectly for a crispy outside fluffy inside) but the chicarron was all fat & oil-they need to cut it into smaller chunks-fry it longer-and pat some oil off Pollo Burrito-mainly rice & refried beans, there was a bit of chicken in 1/3-but all filling, no flavor, no seasoning Tamales (one steamed & one fried)-plain-not impressed with the quality or size for the price; and while I tried it out, I learned tamales should not be fried. We ended up at La Familiar because our normal pupusa place was closed for quarantine. Their prices were higher than other pupusaria's in the area; we picked them because their menu had the most variety. I would say quantity over quality- they offer a large number of dishes, but haven't seemed to perfect a specialty. Would not order from again, but it did satisfy a craving-and I'm happy to support local.

Yelp
Ambience is great! Very cute (like IG worthy - from exterior to interior) & impeccably clean little strip mall restaurant. Got a to go order this time, but will def go back to eat in restaurant & enjoy some of that adorable ambience. Papusas were piping hot & very good. Slightly lacking in flavor over others I've had. Slaw portion a little less than needed for amount of papusas. Should have received a little more, to be fair. Also, since I was eating on the go, I wish they would have given me the slaw in a container, not little snack baggies. Was quite difficult to manage while eating pulled over on side of road. I will definitely ask for a mixing container next time, if necessary.

Yelp
The servers are rude taking orders . Came in today for my birthday gave me the wrong plate of food and just told me that it was fine (mind you I've already waited 25 minutes for my food ) after he said that he came back and said that I would have to wait more longer for my food to come . THEIR WAS NO MANAGER . How can this place run with no management

Nathan D.

Yelp
First time ever leaving a review on Yelp, but I wanted give this place some praise. I had never been to this place and I honestly had no idea it even existed. Taqueria Habanero has been a much more frequent spot for me since living at the varsity. It a nice little place with a great ambiance. The guy who took my order was very helpful and friendly. He recommended some pupusas for me to try since I had never been there. Food came out relatively quickly as well. I personally like the food a lot. I ended up getting 3 pupusas and some plantains and it was the perfect amount for me without being too expensive. Great place, highly recommend.

Miguel P.

Yelp
My favorite strictly Salvadorean restaurant in the area. Pupusas, Pan Con Pollo, Desayuno típico are a must try! and Salvadorean empanadas for desert including nuegados give it a try hey YOLO and i guarantee it'll be your new thing! Service is also

Ann R.

Yelp
I always get revueltas pupusas here. It's great and super cheap. Always get a side of beans and rice to round out the meal and it's perfect. I've tried one of their plates (chicken, chorizo, and steak) and it was pretty decent. Ordered beans on the side for this one and I would say it definitely needed it.

Shar Y.

Yelp
Randomly was in the area and had their pupusas and it was fresh, hot, cheesy, and perfectly delicious. Just what I wanted. Not sure about the rest of their menu, but their pupusas are on point. Good prices as well. 2 dollars for a sizable pupusa. This is a place where a lot of locals go and their staff is Spanish speaking. Will be back again! :D

Kimberly M.

Yelp
Yuck! As one customer stated, my pupusa tasted sour, like spoiled milk. The black bean pupusa was a flavorless and soggy mess. The side of pico de gallo was simply vinegary, no flava-- it was $3 and the portion size was enough to dress one tater tot! (okay so maybe 2: ) I will not return. I never say "do not go" in my reviews, as that is your personal choice. But I cannot recommend. Service was slow, but I wouldn't have minded if the food was fabulous.

Tiana B.

Yelp
Me, my mom, and sister came here for lunch. As soon as we walked in the door someone greeted us and showed us to a table. The pupusas were sooo delicious. I got bean/cheese and jalapeño/cheese. My mom got pork/cheese and bean/cheese. My sister got jalapeño/cheese and pork/cheese. And no we didn't plan that. They were all hot and flavorful. Someone came to check on us every few minutes and they were so friendly and helpful. Everyone said goodbye as we left. I love this place. I just wish it was closer to my house.

Dani F.

Yelp
I dont know what it is but I just can't get with this place. The agua fresca is pretty good and stay pleasant enough. The sopa de res looks phenomenal butttttt if it's not better than my FIL's then no need for me to try it. My struggle is the pupusas. They just arent that great to me but people order them by the truckload. It's probably just me.

Kunal K.

Yelp
After an extensive quest, I have finally found my favorite pupusas in the DMV area. I just find myself wishing it was in or closer to DC. There are five variables here. Dough, cheese, fillings, slaw, and salsa. All four are out of this world. The cheese is stellar, the dough is moist, they have a unique slate of fillings (I know queso, revuelto, and loroco are the authentic staples but I really appreciate getting some chicken or beef in there). Most importantly, these ingredients are perfectly proportioned, which is a common issue in my experience elsewhere. They even have a great selection of unique drinks - horchatas, agua frescas, etc. The crowd seemed like many families and very few students, which was odd given the area and price point. tl;dr - this place is incredible and I'm thrilled to have found something this good after a lengthy quest to try every pupuseria I could in the DC vicinity.

Steve E.

Yelp
Love that the menu has a short story and history of pupusas. This place has a lot of potential however the Service was slow, employees did not seem happy, and food was good but not the best pupusa ive had. I like the fact they have a variety of pupusas. With the right management this place can get 5 stars

Asa B.

Yelp
The service and the staff were extremely satisfying. A whole In the wall type of place that could easily be overlooked, that has the potential to outdo any of the restaurants in the mall strip. Even though I didn't speak English, the staff was very polite and prompt about making sure my needs were met. The pupusas weren't that satisfying but the comes second the amount of care I received. Great Job keep it up staff.

Libby F.

Yelp
Cheap eats in a pleasant environment is what you'll get here. They have a great variety of pupusas - all under $2.00 each. I had the loroco, because it's not that often I have squash blossoms. I also had a cheese quesadilla which was just cheese, but the quacamole made it perfect. I know most pupusas taste the same wherever you go, but the ones here are truly an authentic El Salvadoran experience. I've had ones the parents at my school make, and these are the real deal. It's down the street from my friend's house, so I will be back with her. There's lots of free parking in the strip mall lot.

Tanya T.

Yelp
Ordered dinner through doordash today, Carne Asada, horchata, and pastelitos de pollo were yummy. Unfortunately, the 4 pupusas revueltas were not; maybe we caught the pupuser@ on a bad day... but the ingredients were not balanced, they were salty, cheese was chunky, and stuffing was uneven throughout and dry. This was really disappointing when you order from a Pupuseria. We will be sticking to the non pupusa items on the menu.

Melissa U.

Yelp
Mi restaurante favorito de comida salvadoreña, tienen una variedad de platillos y el servicio es rápido.

Glen H.

Yelp
Excellent papusa...okay plantains, the refried beans taste like they came out of a can...skip them. The fish soup...also very good. Basic restaurant. Reasonble prices. Friendly and pleasant services.

Jay W.

Yelp
Love this place. Great authentic food for a reasonable price. We ordered the pupusas which are delicious. We had the pork, bean and cheese and the Flor de Ayote. Both were excellent and I will return anytime I'm in the area.

Theresa N.

Yelp
I heard a lot of good reviews about this place before deciding to try it out. Unfortunately I was disappointed ... the most recommended item on the menu was the cheese and jalapeño pupusa which I thought was gross.. I did not like the taste or texture of it.. the dough was over cooked. I also tried the bean and cheese pupusa and it tasted a little better, but I've had better. I also ordered a chicken burrito and let's just say I could have a made better one at home... there was too much rice and too little chicken... I don't think I'll be coming back here anytime soon.

Galan V.

Yelp
Tiene que mejorar de alguna manera más espera por que después de esperar una hora y media No dan ganas de dejar propina si vienen ya saben venganse con unas 3 horas de tiempo

Quin A.

Yelp
Good service, good food, came here with my college group of friends. Plenty of space, polite & efficient service. Very reasonable prices!

Ali D.

Yelp
Food from here got me through being sick with COVID. Really good and affordable. Looking forward to going more.

Daniela E.

Yelp
Always is the same poor costumer service. I prefer to order prior and take out. First they take LONG TO PICK UP THE PHONE and then when you arrived IT TAKES MORE THAN 15 mins in order for me to get the food. I honestly fin it frustrating

Zorri W.

Yelp
Please do NOT ever visit this place!! HORRIBLE HORRIBLE Service. Wait it over 45 minutes for an order. I was told that it will be ready in five minutes and then I waited 25 minutes, asked again and then I was told four more minutes. The order finally comes out after I don't know how long and items were missing in the bag. They then proceeded to tell me that they didn't have one of the items after I had already waited 45 minutes. Why would they not tell me that they didn't have an item before or when I was there waiting for 45 minutes. Also, I politely said excuse me multiple times to the young ladies that were working at the front and was totally ignored. They only wanted to service and make happy the people that were already sitting in that dirty restaurant. I will never visit this place again. Their customer service is horrible. Please do not ever visit.

Eleena G.

Yelp
the food is always so good, and portion sizes are pretty good for the price (though, my friend did say the portion size for the salad wasn't the best)! their fried yucca is one of the best things i've ever eaten.

Judy M.

Yelp
Their food is great and they have great service. Lots to choose from. We were visiting from California and it was great to see so many Salvadoran restaurants.

Pete D.

Yelp
The place is just so comfortable and the food was amazing! I just love their pupusas. Just the best, good prices, friendly folks...what more could I ask for?

Jennifer R.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night. The place was pretty busy but we were sat immediately. The place is small but in a cute cozy way. Only about a dozen tables. I ordered the shrimp platter and my sister got the carne asada and a pupusa. The shrimp was delicious and well spiced. The rice wasn't good to me and it was oddly sticky. The tortillas weren't anything to write home about. I did have to add a little hot sauce to my tacos. The like served with it gave it a bright spot with the acidity. My sister didn't like her carne asada but loved the pupusa. Service was very slow but the people were nice. But I don't think I'd return because shrimp isn't enough reason to me.

Kristie J.

Yelp
You can't beat the price for the food. Everything is delicious especially the pupusas. They were out of the two that I really wanted to try so I have to get my third and fourth try which were still delicious. This place is very authentic don't come here expecting burritos and the American version of Mexican food. I go to school across the street so I will be coming back here often.

Kierra J.

Yelp
Was given pupusa's with old sour filling will be sticking to Pollo Fiesta off of kenilworth ave.

Jerry V.

Yelp
food is so good I can eat like 100 pupusas there and the pupusa de queso is so good. 5 star restauran.

Eduardo G.

Yelp
Worst fried tamales de elote ever they literally served me burnt fried ground corn masa in a to go container all in a heap I ordered 7 tamales de elote no way in appearance did it look like tamales very disappointed that they'll even serve a customer something like that never again

Janet T.

Yelp
Ordered pork and cheese pupusas to go. The pupusa was tasty. I loved the texture of the pork. It isn't made into a dough like on other places, but ground yet still shredded. It was closest to authentic that I've tasted in the area. The curtido (cabbage and carrot accompanying pupusas) was bland and had no acidity to it, which was disappointing. My mother is from a region of El Salvador where they don't use the tomato sauce so I don't use it. No review on that. Order was ready exactly when specified.

Rotem K.

Yelp
Great salvadorian place! Very authentic, tasty food and good prices. Pupusas price range around $1.5-2 each. Entrees $8-10. You can eat your meal there in less than $10. Their pupusas are great, as well as the guacamole! also, I would recommend taking sliced mango. Yes, it's just mango... but goes great with the food :) One big disadvantage, though, is the fact they don't have liquor license - so no booze for me there... And also, if you care about the look of the place - this place is not for you.

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Food is horrible now. The pupusa are too thick and too dry and the chan juice tastes like medicine. Neither my husband and I finished our food. The pork is undercooked, so much so that our stomachs started hurting after we left. I think this is the last time we ever come here...EVER!

Britt Y.

Yelp
Seems to stay pretty busy even with COVID-19 going on. I ordered the shrimp, chicken, and ham Pupusas and they were pretty good, I really couldn't taste much of the chicken and shrimp but it was still pretty good. I also ordered the ribs which came with rice and cabbage. The ribs were seasoned well and so was the rice ( not much of a rice eater). The wait time was about 20 mins. Oh yeah, I also ordered a tamarindo drink and that was refreshing. Would I come back maybe? Maybe. Even thought this would be my last choice because my other places in the shopping center are was shut down.

Frank G.

Yelp
I really love the pupusas from this place but like a month ago the service is not the same is terrible I really don't want to go back to this place .. Food is good but service is terrible..

Lena W.

Yelp
Can I say just how quickly this place has skyrocketed to the top of my local favorites list?! 1. They're community-oriented. My daughter's school had several restaurant fundraisers this year, mostly with chains. Pupuseria La Familiar is one of 2 independent restaurants who partnered with the PTA for a fundraiser. Not only that, but they were incredibly helpful throughout the entire process. 2. The food is just too good. I generally come for the pupusas, which are delicious! But I tried the tamale de gallino. So, so, so delicious! This has become my lunch spot - service is quick and the food is really inexpensive. I love that I can get 3 tamales and a side of rice for $8. There was so much food that I had leftovers. Every time I come here, I find another reason to love it more. They will continue to get my business!

Amy R.

Yelp
This place gets 4 stars just based on the fantastic employees. The gentleman that waited on us was super friendly and patient with us as we decided what we wanted to order. He didn't even laugh at my weak attempt at Spanish! I tried the chicken and cheese pupusa and the ayuta pupusa. Both were great.

Deborah L.

Yelp
Fried plantains, refried black beans, and crema...who knew suck an odd sounding combo could be so totally delicious????? Well now I do! This was my very first time eating Salvadorean food, and a friend who is familiar with it took me here for lunch. She's vegetarian and I let her take the lead on ordering. We got the above mentioned appetizer, and I have to say it was the bomb! The flavors went so well together. I could eat that for days! We also got three different vegetarian pupusas. Spinach was so so, but kind of bland. Now of course I don't remember the other two, but one I liked and one I didn't. The problem was we didn't actually know what was what! They all came on one plate and our server didn't tell us which one each was (that's why 4 stars and not 5, plus we had to ask for silverware). We also got a corn tamale which was like dessert. Also delicious! Lots of food to share, and really reasonably priced. Quick for lunch too, with parking. I'll definitely be back, and try some non vegetarian options!
