A Dim Sum Brunch on Federal to Try This Weekend | Eater Denver

"Salvadoran food can be hard to find in Denver, but in this tiny bolthole the owner/operator/cook serves pupusas daily; the variety changes but you can expect fillings like refried beans and cheese and chicharron (finely chopped pork rather than pork cracklings), and it's cash only." - Rebecca Treon

Google
It was absolutely wonderful even the coleslaw and the pupusa sauce which is almost kind of like a sweet chili tamale sauce, if that's not a horrible way to explain it however everything's made fresh and the Ladies there are absolutely so proud of everything they do 10 out of 10 recommend. I added some rotisserie chicken mashed potatoes and gravy with fresh avocado because it was a big meal moment lol so good I can't wait to go back and try everything else

Google
Food tastes delicious. This is my favorite place to get pupusas. They have a lot of other things on the menu that taste great as well! Super friendly family owned restaurant. You will be greeted with a smile every time you come in. If you like pupusas or Salvadoran food, try this place out. If you’ve never tried it, this is the spot to do so!

Google
Wonderful hole in the wall spot. These pupusas are delicious and are made fresh to order by the two wonderful women who run the place. Crispy and chewy on the outside and hot on the inside with quality ingredients. Food takes a few mins because it’s not pre made, but can call in advance. Great mild vinegar slaw that complements the pupusas. Will def be back. Princes extremely reasonable, especially for how filling everything is.

Google
Great food with wonderful service! You can tell everything is handmaid with love and authenticity. Always steaming hot and packed with filling. One of my favorite spots for pupusas!

Dave Clark

Google
Reviews are misleading. The worst pupusas I've ever had. Flavorless! Had no salt, jalapeño or spice taste, no taste of oregano in the curtido. Waste of money

Jesmine Le Grand

Google
Delicious! We ordered the chicken and cheese + bean and cheese pupusas. Great service. Super friendly staff. Best pupusas I’ve had in a while.

Lessly Barillas

Google
An older woman runs the business and she is so sweet and amazing great pupusas highly recommend!

Mackenzie Beyer

Google
Had the bean and cheese and cheese and chicharrone pupusas. You have to wait a bit but only because she makes them to order so they are hot and delicious. They were AMAZING. The sauce and slaw is also fantastic. Definitely coming back.

Yelp
Someone here said "small place but with big flavor" that is so true! Pupuseria San Salvador is what I've been looking for in Denver/Colorado since I've moved here! They're authentic salvadorean food, the pupusas are 10/10. The size of them aren't too small and they're very full with the filling. The cheese pull is stretchy and gooey, everything you want from a pupusa and the flavor of the fillings are amazing. We're pretty traditional in my house and we ordered, cheese with beans, cheese with chicharrón and cheese with loroco which is a plant that is edible. I will say I would've hoped for more curtido (which is like a salvadorean sauerkraut side) with the amount of pupusas we ordered. The salsa and curtido come with any order of pupusas. the flavor of the curtido and red salsa was very good and authentic. The price is extremely fair for a pupusa which I'm happy about. If you're looking for good pupusas this is the place to come! We will deff. Order from here on now. The woman who took my phone order was the sweetest and super accommodating as I was ordering for a pick up set time. Service was amazing at pick up as well and I want to add that they do accept card payments.

Yelp
We happened to be driving home from Denver to Littleton, and passed by. I made my husband turn around. This was the first PUPUSERIA we had seen in a year (since our move from CA to CO) I entered and the smells were wonderful. I knew what I wanted. And made our order. Four 'mixed (cheese/meat)' and two large Horchatas (Mexican type) While waiting I chatted with Maura, the owner. The food is fresh, I loved watching her prepare our food. $25 for all Came home and surprised my Salvadoran daughter!! She immediately opened and prepared the 'salad' and sauce to her pupusa. My four year old grandson enjoyed his. He said; 'I like pupusa's', and we already knew he would love horchata. We will be back. I cannot wait to try the Salvadoran Tamales. And of course bring home more pupusa's. Thank you Maura!!

Yelp
First time trying these and oh my gosh...can you fall in love with a Pupuseria!!! The carne one is the best followed by queso and then bean. The carne is moist with such a deep flavor of spices (not hot spicy...I am a whimp LOL!). The beans are creamy with a tad of chunky bean and just so flavorful and the queso one was so good with the crispy cheese on the outside. The masa is moist and just the right thickness along with the ratio of filling was perfect. We got takeout this time around.

Yelp
Super friendly and consistently amazing every time. Just leave a little extra time to wait, even for pick ups. Great food takes time!

Yelp
The Popusas is what I really recommend! I've tried all of them! Even though I loved them all I really recommend the camarón con queso! That one was delicious. 2 hard working woman! They're always making everything fresh so your food might take a minute but it is worth it! The customer service is amazing they both are sweet! Mom & daughter. 4.50 for a Popusa! So cheap for how good they're! Try this place if you're craving a popusa ! I really recommend it!

Yelp
We stopped by today and were very impressed. Good menu selection's, excellent service and delicious food. We were fortunate enough to have the owner help us understand the menu, our first time with El Salvadoran foods, and it won't be our last visit. If you're in the area give them a try.
google avatar

Deborah N.

Yelp
Simple, delicious. Had two pupusas (beware, they're filling!) -- one queso y frijol (beans), one queso y loroco ("flower," more like a big bud). Both delicious, served with curtido (Salvadoran slaw) and flavorful salsa.

Yelp
This place is legit when it comes to pupusas. It will remind you of grandma's kitchen where a sweet lady will take your order and will make every meal with lots of love. Currently there's only take out option available but prior to covid the little dining area could hold about 6 people at most. The pupusas are very well made; they are a good balance of filling and dough without being too doughy. The salsa and the curtido are a perfect complement to the rest of the dish. About 2 pupusas are enough if you are trying to have a meal; they are filling. I ordered 5 to go; total do $18.25 and it was about 2 meals we had out of those 5 :) Unfortunately there was no time for photos as the hunger came in first but pictures can't give you a window into the flavor so you'll have to check it out on your own ;)

Karly C.

Yelp
Amazing, phenomenal, spectacular! Best pupusas ever!! And the sweetest nicest ladies throwing it down! Will definitely be back! Thank you so much!

Yelp
I've eaten pupusas in many places in Miami in Los Angeles, even in El Salvador and these were by far the best ones I've had in my life ( and I am not being hyperbolic ) perhaps even better than my Tia Carmen's dare I say lol they do not skimp on the filling and the curtido and salsa have just the right amount of flavor and spice. Literally phenomenal. I see some negative reviews here mainly from people who ordered Mexican food at a Salvi restaurant. For those not culturally aware, Mexican food and Salvi food are very different. Salvi restaurants tend to advertise and serve Mexican food for those not familiar with Salvi cuisine for the sake of keeping up with business but normally it's not the best. It's like going to a Japanese restaurant and ordering Chinese food. You're bound to be disappointed people. It is not the same, just saying. Take the leap try a pupusa and you might have a change of heart. Time to acculturate to diverse experiences and food !!

Yelp
Owned by grandma, daughter and grandson (the only three working there) this little hole on the wall has surpassed my expectations. Their pupusas mixtas (chicharrón y queso) were not lacking flavor. They were not greasy, good sized and filled with the flavorful mixture. Their curtido (cabbage mixture) had a little more jalapeño than it would in El Salvador but it was really good and so was the chirmol (tomato salsa) Their sweet fried plantains were not as moist and sweet, but it is a hit or miss with plantains anyway. The price is right and it is traditional. Try this place, we are definitely coming back. Karen and Mario

Yelp
Perfect vibes and great food (could use more salt but still loved it). Huaraches de asada and plantanos are to die for. I think about this restaurant daily I wish I was in the area more. Felt like I was actually in a restaurant in El Salvador. This place is cash only make sure you bring plenty to pay and tip.

Juneyah J.

Yelp
The pupusas here are so amazing and flavorful you can tell they're made with love I have to be careful not to spend my whole paycheck here !

Jesse M.

Yelp
Love this place so much! Stumbled upon it while my girlfriend was pregnant and looking to try something different. Glad to say we've been coming back for over a year now!
google avatar

Shin M.

Yelp
Little hole in the wall restaurant Only 2 staff running the place, both very sweet. They have about 3 tiny tables to sit at, the kitchen takes up the majority of the place. They have a tiny dingy bathroom behind the kitchen for customer use. We tried the meat and bean pupiserias. We both got 2 each. They hOnestly were preTty average, even with the sauce on top. We wanted to like them but unfortunately, we wouldn't try again ::(
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Oh my goodness!! This place is THE SPOT. It's just a tiny, little family-run business with limited seating. (I think many people order to go.) You walk in, order by the menu, and then wait for your pupusas to be handmade and crafted into a disc of deliciousness. The gooey cheese, the sauce--oh, I want more now! The woman who runs the place speaks limited English, but she is incredibly kind and came out to check on us and ask us how the pupusas were. If you haven't ever had a pupusa, this is your place. You'll never want them from anywhere else!
google avatar

Kanger H.

Yelp
I came here with my sons to try some pupusas. I love the food and the lovely woman who runs the place. The fresh pupusas has a light crunch outside and yummy gooey cheesy heaven on the inside. The cabbage slaw is perfect to cut through the richness of the pork and beans. The tacos and sopes are delicious as well. But the pupusas are the headliner. This place is a tiny hole-in-wall, which is my favorite type of place, that delivers on there food and service.

Yelp
We have been searching for a great papusa in Denver. And we found it! Holy heck is this a delicious little find. The address is Federal not Sheridan!! We should have known better but we only had $13 in cash. That limited us to two Papusas each which sounds fine when you don't want to order the whole menu. But we wanted to order the whole menu. Kinda. We both ordered the cheese and bean papusa, the hubs got a chichirron and I got a cheese. The cabbage had just the right amount of tang to it and was cool and crisp in comparison to the hot papusa. The salsa had just the perfect heat. From the kitchen you can hear her slapping the Papusas together. The masa dough was light and flavorful and like no other papusa I've had. Delicious. We will be back with more cash this time!!

D P.

Yelp
Authentic, kicks ass. Really small- finding a seat is or miss. Grab cash beforehand; the ATM next door is a ripoff.
google avatar

Mandy S.

Yelp
Simple menu with all the basics: pupusas, tacos, burritos, tamales, tortas... I got 2 pupusas and 2 barbacoa tacos for $11! Food is legit authentic- the lady (owner?) in the back was hand pressing my tortillas after I ordered them. Food is all made to order so takes about 8-10 mins without a crowd, but well worth the wait! The menu was in English so I didn't worry about my Spanish skills. A young man was working who spoke perfect English as well, but I'd feel comfortable even if he wasn't there.
google avatar

Skyler M.

Yelp
Pupusas pupusas pupusas. Me gusta mucho. The pupusas here are incredible. I ordered all of them but my favorite was the firjoles con queso. I am not sure if the 70 year old lady working here speaks english but im sure you can point and say uno or dos. Traditional salvadorean pupusas right here in Denver. Dont be a rude ignant white person if u go here. Expect a slight culture change.
google avatar

Yelp
GREAT PUPUSAS! My son hardly eats anything most of the time but he loves pupusas! We got one of each, but they're so filling I didn't even get to the chicken one yet. Little man loved the cheese one, I LOVED the chicharron one and the bean one was pretty great for beans... Make sure you have cash! I hadn't noticed they were cash only and I was lucky I had cash on me! Definitely glad I came out of my way today! BURP!

Cayem M.

Yelp
Melt-in-your-mouth Salvadoran pupusas from Maura, who speaks a little English. She makes them as you wait. $3.75 each cash only. A hole in the wall and they are absolutely authentic.
google avatar

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Love it here! Delicious food and welcoming service. My husband had the breakfast burrito and my son and I had pupusas. Very tasty food. Reminds me of my grandmother's food.
google avatar

Big Daddy H.

Yelp
Yes, yes, yes, yes. I want some more, but my belly is too big from the last order. We will definitely be back. A warm smile and welcome followed up with handmade Papusas. I had one of each and they were heavenly. Warm, soft, tasty awesomeness with a acid-zip from the slaw and salsa. I need more very soon. The young woman in the kitchen was as welcoming as my stomach was for lunch. Thank you for being just around the corner!!!
google avatar

Rich W.

Yelp
Never had Salvadorian comfort food before and now I am in love with it!! Pupuseria is a small restaurant and run by the most wonderful family! They serve nothing but awesome food at a great price. Will come here every day!!
google avatar

Andy S.

Yelp
I wouldn't know an authentic Pupusa if it hit me in the face. But when I took a bite, it instantly transported me back to my imaginary child hood in El Salvador, when grandma used to make me the most delicious Pupusa's in all the world.

Rafael O.

Yelp
Such a delicious spot. The pupusas are incredible, and the cooks/owners are so kind. Definitely going to be a regular here
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
Great handmade pupusas and tacos. She takes her time making this from scratch so call ahead or grab a Jarritos and a chair. Small sitting area, so I ordered it to go.
google avatar

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Outstanding food and service drove from Fort Collins and definitely worth coming back here ! The lady is super sweet and it makes you feel as if your lovely granny is the one cooking for you !
google avatar

Terri B.

Yelp
A couple of years ago, I accidently stumbled across Pupuseria San Salvador. The outside of the building doesn't look fancy and her restaurant is off of Quincy and Federal in Sheridan. That area is not known for upscale cafes. But the food there is delicious. For those of you that don't know, a Pupusa is a round looking burrito made out of rice masa. The speciality here made from homemade rice masa and filled with pulled pork or spicy beef with Monterey Jack cheese, beans, cilantro and cabbage and tomato. It's easy to find a table there because they only have four and the soft drinks are in a cooler. It looks divey, but their food is delicious!

Jackie L.

Yelp
I never really come on Yelp, but I had to leave a 5 star review! Best pupusas and breakfast burrito we've ever eaten. You need to try this place.
google avatar

Diana F.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Its hard to find good authentic Mexican food around here. Good price, great food, and real people.
google avatar

Kara H.

Yelp
Delicious! A little hole in the wall, but it's clean. A sweet little old lady cooks everything from scratch ( you can see around the corner right into the kitchen). The papusas are so good! The spicy cabbage served with it is fresh and made in house. Highly recommend!

Eric T.

Yelp
First of all. Straight fire Pupusas. I got the one with everything in it. Small tiny little place. Take out only. Everyone pretty much only spoke Spanish in the place except for younger gentleman who translated and helped me place my order. Everyone was super nice. Type of place I'd bring out of towners to for fire Mexican.

Mike F.

Yelp
The fellas and I were looking for some real food without spending a fortune. Glad we found this place! We stopped in today, the place is quite small, but so what. We were immediately greeted by a wonderful lady that would make anyone immediately think of their own Grandma. She immediately made us feel very welcome and walked all three of us gringos through the menu. She was beaming and says "what do you like?" She seemed excited for us to place our order. Perhaps even giddy to go fix a plate. I had two delicious pupusas and a coke in a glass bottle. My coworkers had tacos and tamales as well as a dish one coworker had ordered via picture. Plates scraped and wallets not. I know we will definitely be back soon.
google avatar

Leny R.

Yelp
Salvadorian food is the BEST!!! Every time I come here I get transported to my little town in El salvador where I would sit in my grandma's kitchen waiting for the pupusas to be ready. Bean and cheese pupusas are my favorite.
google avatar

Spaghetti M.

Yelp
This place was awesome. It matched my hopes. It is a TINY place. Probably enough for 8 people, but the smiles from the 3 ladies I encountered was electric. I had a Queso and Chicharron pupusa which I loved, and a tamale that fulfilled my quest and appetite. The only complaint I have is that I wish they posted the prices. Though don't let it stop you, the prices are extremely fair and the food is worth it.
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
This hole in the wall place is definitely hiding the best pupusas i've had in Denver so far. Walked in and, to be honest, the place isn't too impressive at first sight. Also, does cash only. No credit cards. But wow is the food packed with amazing taste. I had the pupusas revueltas & the owner who was also the only worker/cook there made them totally fresh & wonderful! We will definitely be back. Don't let the look of the place fool you. The food really does speak for itself.
google avatar

Josh C.

Yelp
Great little place. Food made fresh and service is good! I had cheese and beans pupusas and pupusas with asada. So good
google avatar

Nikita S.

Yelp
Handmade papusas!! They were soooo good too. Got the papusas revueltas with chicharron cheese and beans. The slaw on top was good and spicy too, super crisp. The sauce was on point too. Got all of this for my family who never had them before, and they loved it!
google avatar

Blaine H.

Yelp
This place is on federal NOT Sheridan. I have driven by it a hundred times, only to learn about it here on yelp. We were pleasantly surprised by the yummy San Salvadorian slaw that accompanied our papusas. We have two small children, so takeout is about all we can do these days. It was refreshing to pick up our food, take it home, and know that we were going to have some authentic San Salvadorian cuisine. It took awhile to get our order... Not because the owner and cooker was so busy - but because she was making it fresh from scratch. I would recommend calling ahead to order for takeout. We will be back! We ordered 4 Papusas, and 3 orders of Plantanos. It was $18. Very reasonable for the amount of food and quality.
google avatar

Ariana G.

Yelp
I've tried 1 other pupuseria & this one hands down is my favorite. The owner is a cute little lady who cooks with all her heart, so you get the homemade taste & trust me I've had homemade pupusas back in LA. Will definitely go back as these where amazing. Only down side is it's cash only but then again that's how all the whole in the wall GEMS work in LA.
google avatar

Nereida D.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious pupusas. Would like to stop by and try their other plates as well. Very traditional. I had the queso con loroco and my husband had pupusas revueltas both really delicious. My daughter had a cheese pupusa and ate the entire thing
google avatar

Reed R.

Yelp
The pupusas are the best! You can't go wrong with the menu though. I love that it's a small more home feel. The owner is a total sweetheart too
google avatar

Kathy B.

Yelp
Excellent pupusas -- so fresh, flavorful & filling. Great value. The place is very small, so recommend take out.
google avatar

Adam H.

Yelp
This place is the best - the little old woman who owns the place greeted me in Spanish and gave me the opportunity to practice my Spanish. The papusas were delicious too!
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Excellent food! Very authentic and delicious! You can tell the two ladies cooking know what they're doing. The tacos and pupusas were divine! I eat here all the time!
google avatar

Juan G.

Yelp
Amazing. Simply amazing!!! Makes me feel like I'm at home with my mom. Authentic traditional pupusas that are to die for, and the lady is very humble and sweet.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
The boyfriend and I had been craving pupusas for a while now but my best local place is 45+ minutes away. Decided to give this one a shot given its only 2 exits away and we were not disappointed. The hours aren't the greatest, I get off work at 6 and they close at 6:30 so rushing wasn't fun. They also don't take cards so be prepared to pull cash. Their pricing doesn't disappoint either, at $2.55 a pupusa you get a bang for your buck. It's quite small, I missed it on the first try and the inside only has two tables. The wait is quite lengthy but they're all made from scratch so it's understandable. Flavoring was great, the boyfriend loved the cheese ones, me more the chicharron ones. The curtido could be a little better and they're a bit greasy but we will definitely be coming back. We are fans!
