3 Best Day Trips in Bali | Condé Nast Traveler

"Located half an hour north of central Ubud, Gunung Kawi is a magnificent collection of temples that were first built in the 11th-century, after Hindus migrated from Java to Bali. Commissioned by Udayana, then the king of Bali, the temples are all designed to represent members of his family. Gunung Kawi is fairly low-key—there isn't much awareness among travelers (yet). But we were beyond impressed. The temples, carved into the rocks with green foliage growing around them, look like a mystical jungle sanctuary." - Anna Chittenden

A really lovely little temple, not overcrowded, quiet and calm. You could also do a purification ritual here if you’d like or just spent hours sitting by the beautiful pond feeding the fish. I real spot of calm.

The most underrated temple we've been to. The place was quiet and not so full of tourists, and we can enjoy the experience here. You can do the purification ritual here. You will receive a sarong for free at the entrance. Here, there is a pull full of fiss for which you can buy some food and feed them. There are a lot of fish and ducks.

An amazing temple. I highly recommend it as a perfect short trip from Ubud, and you can combine it with a visit to a nearby waterfall. These temples are truly something different from what we have in Europe – very beautiful and peaceful, and there's even the option to take part in a purification ritual. Highly recommended!

not really much to see in there, some construction was going on when we were there, few pools not sure were for swimming or for the bath ceremony but some locals were there for swimming and smoking. the toilet need an upgrade! doors won't lock and broken seats, smells and dark. entry fee IDR 50K/pp and sarong included, no need to buy from the street vendors

Beautiful temple complex that can be explored in about an hour. Unfortunately, only local taxis are allowed to pick up passengers from the temple, and Grab drivers are not permitted to enter the area. When we were there, no local taxi drivers were available, which made leaving quite difficult. You will have to walk a little bit out of the area so the grab can pick you up again. Local Taxi price was double the Grab Price.

A Water Temple as can be seen from the picture. Serene and quiet when we visited on a Saturday afternoon. IDR 50K per entry with sarong provided on loan. It’s a small temple with nothing much unless you join the purification ritual which we didn’t.

Visiting Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu and taking part in the sacred ritual was an incredibly profound and transformative experience. 🌿 The Place – One of the most beautiful and peaceful temples in Bali, surrounded by lush greenery and crystal-clear spring water. The atmosphere is filled with tranquility and spiritual energy. 💦 The Purification Ritual – Bathing in the sacred springs, prayers, and traditional Balinese ceremonies help cleanse not only the body but also the mind, bringing a sense of deep inner harmony. 🙏 Energy & Emotions – The feeling of lightness, peace, and gratitude after the ritual is beyond words. It’s like a rebirth, a release from negativity, and a renewal of energy. 💡 Recommendations – If you want to experience the ritual, it’s best to come in the morning, bring a sarong (or rent one on-site), and follow the traditions with respect for the local culture. This ritual was one of the most powerful spiritual experiences of my life. If you’re looking for more than just a tourist attraction and want to connect deeply with Balinese traditions, Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu is a must-visit! ✨

This temple is so beautiful and underrated. The best I visited in Bali. There were only few people and you can do purification ritual here. Free sarong provided. The ritual costs 40k without guide. This is the best spot for the ritual!!! Better than Tirta Empul.
