"Pura Vida Cocina is a perennial Third Street favorite, McMinnville’s home for fresh, creative takes on Latin American flavors. Chef and owner Ricardo Antúnez calls the menu a combination of Central American, Peruvian, and Mexican cuisine, thanks to dishes like tacos, vegetable empanadas stuffed with peanut romesco, and chiles rellenos smothered in aji amarillo cream sauce. The touches of Spain on the menu — like a paella mixta with bay scallops and clams — are a fun diversion, as well. In January 2024, the restaurant owners closed temporarily to renovate and redecorate the space; when it reopened, they added fun breakfast options including chilaquiles and chorizo empanadas." - Emily Teel, Rebecca Roland

Enjoyed a nice, tasty dinner here on a weekday evening. There are some creative ingredients in the dinner options, although portion size is not ample. Service was quick and friendly. Our server was able to answer questions in detail. No rainbow flag displayed. Not sure if this is oversight or rebellion since it seems like it's almost mandatory in town. We don't necessarily care to be part of someone else's lifestyle/worldview statement, so it's one of the reasons we chose this place.

I had beef tacos and chicken enchiladas. The tacos were delicious, the enchiladas were okay but too many extras, looked like a pile of ingredients piled up. Very hard to find server. No service mostly. Parking on street

Google
Great little place that serves up fresh and super tasty food and drinks. All the tacos are excellent but the unanimous vote was the shrimp tacos were best! The fried avacado is alvo very tasty and healthy dish. Go check them out!

Some of the best ethnic food I’ve ever had… anywhere! Everything was fresh fresh fresh! Friendly and accommodating wait staff. If I lived in the area I’d be stopping in all the time. 😉

Best tacos we’ve ever had. You have to try both the pork belly and Alaska cod by ordering the combo. They make a mean margarita too and have great local art on the walls.

Third time here and it’s very good! The tacos are all amazing (that’s all we’ve had each time) but I’m sure everything else is just the same! Everyone who has served us has been super friendly!

Came here on Friday evening for dinner with a friend. Beautiful little spot in one of the old buildings downtown 3rd st MAC. Seated right away. We ordered margaritas right away, it took a bit to get those and water. Then we ordered a bunch of plates to share- tostones (fried plantains) with black beans and crema, chips and guacamole, pork belly arepas, and salmon ceviche. Everything was delicious and super fresh. And came out of the kitchen timely. Salmon ceviche with the mango was my favorite, but I could also eat that cornmeal arepa over and over- the softness inside with light crust. Wonderful. Tostones were good! I like that they were not hard like others I’ve tried. I’d say black beans needed finishing seasoning but that’s picky. They had specials (which is nice) that included a tostada. I’d love to try other things on the menu for sure. The service is sort of lacking. There’s basically one guy working orders and one woman at bar and doing side service. I get it it’s tough. I’d def come again cause the food is excellent and the ambiance is clean, warm and inviting.

Wonderful costomer service, was fast and efficient. They are welcoming and friendly. Good tasty food. Got the chili relleno, it was very good, but I was surprised cause it was more like a salad. Had the Cubano sandwich and it was delicious and cheesy could have had more pickles and mustard. I Will go again because there are more things I want to try on the menu.

Yelp
While on our visit to McMinnville, my partner and I popped in for a late lunch on a Saturday. I got the Cuban sandwich, my partner got the vegetable empanadas. Cuban sandwich: came with papa bravas (fried potatoes with a sauce on the side), a bit salty, but otherwise no complaints - a solid Cuban sandwich. Vegetable empanadas: very good - we thought it was gonna be a small snack portion but it was a good, hearty meal - the corn pastry skin isn't thin like at some places, but it was flavorful, not heavy, and loaded with vegetables. The salad was light and refreshing and provided a nice contrast with the earthy beans, and the aioli was flavorful without being too salty. We were surprised by how much we liked it and finished it for the lunch together and packed half the Cuban sandwich and some of the papas bravas to go. Price: $13 for the Cuban sandwich and $11 for the empanadas, good prices for good portion sizes. Worth a revisit? Yes, next time we are in McMinnville, we'll drop by again (especially for the empanadas!).

Yelp
We stopped by for an early dinner to start our weekend. We are glad We came early because by the time we left it was nearly full. I ordered the chille rellano. It is not your typical rellano though! It came topped with salad and perfectly cooked veggies that included diced carrots, broccoli, zucchini and pickled onions as well as greens. The chille was not stuffed like traditional rellanos but had some cotija cheese sprinkled throughout. It also came with seasoned rice. I enjoyed it a lot. I came away without that gluggy feeling that often comes with too much cheese. The veggies were a nice surprise. The others in our party ordered the chicken enchilada, barbacoa tacos and arepas. They enjoyed their selections too. The service was a bit neglectful. We never got the Lime Fresco we ordered and the waiter didn't check in with us. We also thought the guacamole needed salt and the chips, which seemed house made, were quite thick. I would have like some salsa served with my chille rellano. All in all though, we enjoyed our meal and I would definitely go back!

Yelp
The decor and set up is standard. We were there at a very busy time and even though it took a while for service the server was super nice and did not make us feel rushed or unimportant. The food was really good. We got the Mole which was a special. My niece said it was the best she has had. Tacos for me and plantains to share. Over all we will put this on our rotating list for the area. Took off one star for the 5$ price for one can of soda. I don't mind that price if it is bottomless, however for one can it's a bit much.

Yelp
Have you ever sat there staring at a menu of a new place feeling overwhelmed all the amazing looking options, place your order, get it, take your first bite and get an exciting rush from not only tasting something amazing but knowing you made the right choice? That was here for me. The crispy pork belly taco might be the perfect taco. Now you're thinking "dude, you gave them 4 stars." Yes, food is 5 stars hands down but the service was lacking. I assume they had something going on because it wasn't a busy night and the young table busser is the person who helped us. We only saw our server when he brought us our check and took our payment. I appreciate the busser stepping up and helping us though. I'm positive our next experience will be 5 stars.

Mikey L.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. The staff is charming and inviting, and they are quick. While the food is a little more on the expensive side, it makes up for it with the quality of food. From the first bite, you can tell it is handmade and has incredible flavors. Even though the portion sizes are not the biggest, I still got very full. A fantastic place to go out if you want some authentic food in a cute little place. Overall, I would most definitely go here!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food and outstanding service! Try the Salmon Salad, truly outstanding!!

Yelp
Here's a positively enthusiastic review for Pura Vida Cocina: Oh my goodness, let me tell you about my amazing experience at Pura Vida Cocina! From the moment we walked in, it was like stepping into a culinary paradise right in the heart of town! First things first, let's talk about the food - oh mama mia, it was out of this world! Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and authenticity, making our taste buds dance with joy! From the crispy Totopoes served with fresh chips, salsa, beans, and guacamole to the tantalizing Croquetas and mouthwatering Platano Maduro, every bite was a delicious adventure! And let's not forget about the wonderful staff! Despite our little mishap of accidentally coming in through the back door without a reservation, they couldn't have been more accommodating! They welcomed us with open arms and made us feel right at home, ensuring that our dining experience was nothing short of perfection. But wait, there's more! The menu at Pura Vida Cocina is a culinary delight, offering a wide array of delectable options from Enchiladas to Arepas to tantalize your taste buds! And don't even get me started on their incredible Pura Vida Tacos - three hand-made tortillas filled with your choice of filling, topped with shaved cabbage, cotija cheese, cilantro, radish, and chipotle aioli. It's a fiesta in every bite! And for dessert? Well, let's just say the Churros were the perfect sweet ending to an unforgettable meal! So, if you're looking for a dining experience that's not only delicious but also filled with warmth and hospitality, look no further than Pura Vida Cocina. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Pura Vida is absolutely fantastic! Every single thing I've tried has been crave worthy. All around fantastic place for a date, family, or group.

Yelp
Excellent food. Sweet little cafe with an ok atmosphere but I wasn't there for the atmosphere

Yelp
Well worth the drive from Portland to McMinnville for this hidden gem! The fresh made arepas were PERFECTION! When well crafted the simplest things can be magical. I also tried the mixed taco plate (because I love trying several things). The barbacoa, puerco, and camaron were all amazing. So much flavor and no skimping on proteins. Staff were very kind and caring as well.

Darren Y.

Yelp
Awesome food in McMinnville. Super friendly staff and cool Latin music playing throughout our meal. Got the taquitos, fried avocado, and vege sope. All were awesome - served w the tastiest refried black beans and chipotle sauce. Taquitos were crispy and juicy. Sope were veges filling a cornmeal cake shell. Avocado was a nice salad. Also got the guava Fresca - soda water, lime and guava juice. Very refreshing Will come here again

Spring B.

Yelp
The food was amazing! Such a great find in McMinnville. I am now craving the enchilada I had. I'll definitely be back when I'm in town again.

Yelp
Pura Vida was recommended to us by our host at our AirBNB while visiting the area. I am so glad we took their advice and made the trip to McMinnville for it. As soon as she mentioned them having amazing Chile Rellenos I was on board. You can tell they've been impacted by the staff shortages because most of the wait staff were brad new which made for a little less than perfect service, but I don't think that's reason to hurt their ratings because it's something everyone Is dealing with these days. And really, the food more than makes up for it. We ordered some amazing arepas to start that were topped with a delicious salad mix and dressing that was creamy and just "tan rico". The same salad mix was on my Chile relleno that was out of this world. The vegetarian Chile was stuffed with veggies and smothered in another creamy sauce that was sooooo good. It was very different than any other Chile relleno I've ever had. I was so stuffed and content when we left the restaurant. I wish I had a place like this here at home!

Sara O.

Yelp
Interesting menu, delicious food, helpful service. Roomy interior though we ate at a table outside. We would certainly return!

Hernandez N.

Yelp
Horrible service they acted as if I was not Even there it was the worst restaurant experience In a minute

Casey A.

Yelp
This WAS one of my favorite places to eat, but I won't be back anytime soon! Placed a large order for our office team at lunch(including 20% tip) and when I got back to the office we came up one order of tacos short. No big deal, it happens! I called back to let them know and see if we could come get the missed item and was told that Pura Vida did NOT make a mistake and that I must be wrong. I offered to pay for the missing tacos and was told that I would now have to wait an addition 20-30minutes. I chose not to give anymore of my money to this establishment. Such a sad experience after so may great memories there with the staff in the past. Things have changed!!

Amanda R.

Yelp
Came back to Pura Vida, and it was still good, just not as good as I remembered it. I got a spicy margarita- be ready for the heat if you order it! I was very excited to get the plantains again, but they were out. We tried some new dishes- the empanadas were great, the Chile relleno was just ok. The flavor wasn't great and the chicken was over cooked. The croquetas and arepas were just as good as I remembered. I'd go back, but definitely not order the Chile relleno.

Amy A.

Yelp
Stopped here on our way home from the coast. This little gem I found on Yelp. I'd say it's more Latin than Mexican for their offerings. Wish I would have gotten photos. The brazed pork empanadas were fabulous. No skimping on the meat. Of course I had to have the shrimp tacos they were amazing. The shells are handmade and the shrimp are large and fresh, served with pickled red onions and radish. My husband had the chili relleno stuffed with shrimp and fresh vegetables and it was topped with a beautiful salad. For the prices and quality of food it definitely with the drive. We will definitely make the trip to McMinnville just for this restaurant again! Took one star off for the shared restroom that could have used some tidying up.

Myriam B.

Yelp
Great food, we had the ceviche, paella , empenadas and salmon salad, everything was delicious, waitress nice ! Cool decoration . Service was a bit too long and restrooms need a clean up and a make over. Nice and good place anyway!

Selena N.

Yelp
We came here because of the Yelp reviews. I have to say that the tacos were very very good here. Friendly service and everything seemed fresh and well made. I'd definitely come back and come to this place again if in the area! Worth the stop!

Yelp
Pure Vida Cocina is pure-ly delicioso Pure Vida is a one of a kind Latin American restaurant in downtown McMinnville. The menu is inventive and unique, a real gem in our small town. It maintains a high, consistent quality and never disappoints. Our family of four stopped in for dinner on a Friday night. I had been here three other times for business lunches. We ordered the totopoes as an appetizer. Then, for our meals, we had the Sopes, shrimp tacos, enchiladas de mole, and chicken arepas. We were all very pleased with the flavors, presentation and quality of ingredients. The service was average (nothing to complain about: and a charming waiter). And the atmosphere is pretty rustic and simple, but don't let that look deter you. We'll absolutely been back again (and again). I'd highly recommend Pure Vida, whether you're just visiting McMinnville and Linfield or live nearby and would like a unique and impressive meal.

Lori D.

Yelp
We stumbled upon the GEM!! Do not miss this place OMG. It was delicious! Everything we had. I might drive back from California just for lunch! Great service too.

Niki V.

Yelp
Love their food. One of my favorite places on 3rd Street! The flavors are bright and fresh. 10/10 recommend

Ellen D.

Yelp
Lovely place on a shady, walkable street lined with orher small restaurants and shops. The food was excellent, a far cry from the usual Tex-Mex, with Oaxacan and Yucatán influences in the excellent sauces and the abundance of vegetables on each plate, including refreshing & crunchy pickled onions. Service was friendly and attentive despite the noon hour crush. They also serve beer, cocktails, and specialty coffees. Recommend highly.

Leah M.

Yelp
We sat next to the window. I had salmon ensalada and my cousin had 3different tacos. Also we both had a cocktail and it was delicious!!

John D.

Yelp
Hanna recommended the taquitos as her favorite dish and I loved it. The combination of flavors was fresh and comforting. I especially liked the picked onions combined with the sauce on top. The flan was even more flavorful than I expected and it had a perfect consistency. I'll definitely go back when I'm in town.

Francisco M.

Yelp
Wonderful service to the eight of us. Excellent food. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. They were great to put a couple of tables together for us. It was a very nice place.

Kevin S.

Yelp
OMG. probably the best meal we had during a 10 day trip to Oregon that included great meals on the coast, in Portland and in the wine country. So many good options in McMinnville that it's hard to choose but if you only have 1 night, do yourself a favor and eat here! We had the croquettes, fried avocado, Chile rellenos, empanadas, churros and amazing cocktails. Every dish was better than the last! I wish we had more room to order more! Hard to describe the food other than high quality Latin. Not exactly Mexican and very well executed. Highly recommended

Joe S.

Yelp
Pura Vida was Pura Highlight of our visit to McMinville. Wait, it's pronounced Vee-da Co-CHEE-na. Oops! However you say it, the food here is delicious. The environment is basic, but the food was not. The arepas appetizer was amazing with hot and fresh arepas topped with delicious veggies. The paella mixto was filled with excellent seafood and some pretty big mussels (the Arnold Schwarzenegger of mussels). The Mrs. had the Chile Relleno which was a pile of food in itself. Too much for her, which meant more for me! Yum! Thanks for the delicious meal!

Cathy S.

Yelp
Well, I honestly don't understand all the 5-stars on here. I have traveled all over Central and South America, so that's the first problem - what is Pura Vida Cocina aiming to be? Is it Costa Rican, as one would think. No. It's not anything. A Latin restaurant is insulting to the rich and varied cuisines of a huge piece of the world. I have been here three times, and three times they are out. Today I got the chicken mole enchiladas. No heat, no acid, not much salt = not much flavor. Boiled zucchini and big chunks of hard carrot??? Not at all appetizing. Big pile of what looked like weeds on top, which just diluted the passable mole sauce? No thanks. I could barely find any chicken, and what there was was dry. The quesadillas alado were okay - very good even, if only they came with SALSA. Some heat, some acid - those building blocks of flavor. I have learned my lesson, but it would appear most don't agree with me. Ah well, to each her own I suppose.

Areena M.

Yelp
Goodness, Yelpers, y'all really let me down on this one. Why are there so many five star reviews for literally the most bland Latin American food I have ever tasted? Everything we tried lacked salt, acid, heat, and moisture. Everything had potential if there had been more care with seasoning, but that doesn't account for dry barbacoa and pork belly. The one outstanding item was the blood orange agua fresca. Service was good. That's why they get 2 stars. I didn't have the heart to tell them the food was terrible because they were so nice.

Rachelle F.

Yelp
I just stopped in for a to go order of croquettes after 4 different people told me the restaurant was amazing & to be sure to have the appetizer. No kidding, it was very very tasty. The best part was the hospitality. I was invited to grab a spot at the bar while I waited. The staff said hello as they passed. Everyone was busy, but the seemed to be having fun with customers & each other. The ambiance was simple, but welcoming. I can't wait to go back & try some of the other recommended dishes.

Michelle r.

Yelp
Have never had anything less than great customer service here! My favorite are the puerco tacos & margaritas

Scott H.

Yelp
When we left we said "how could we possibly come back. I don't think I could not order what I had, but I also can't imagine not branching out!" We started with the fried avocado. I don't like avocado but judging by the sounds from my wife it was pretty good. I got the tacos. I loved that there was a good amount of meat in each taco. My favorite was the pork belly. Add a little of the green salsa and it's a winner. Shrimp taco was great too. Shrimp cooked well and tasty slaw. I love the homemade tortillas. My wife got the sopes. The masa was excellent and it was loaded with fresh and well seasoned veggies. She will definitely have a hard time passing this up if we come back. Blood orange margarita was amazing. Not too sweet or heavy. It just had all the best things a margarita should. Very friendly and attentive service. Our best bites in McMinnville

K A.

Yelp
Best tacos! Several gluten free (GF) options. They were very aware of GF needs. We had a party of 6, and the fav dishes were the tacos and the salmon salad. Good vibe. Good service.

Jon H.

Yelp
Wandered in while wandering down Main Street in McMinnville. There are lots of Mexican style restaurants, but this one has dishes I haven't run into before and they were all excellent. Great service and a great location, definitely recommend if visiting this area.

Ellen S.

Yelp
get here early as this place fills up fast, especially if you don't have a reservation. cute little restaurant, with tables spread apart (good social distancing). The chips and dips is delicious. The arepas are tasty, the ceasar salad is one of the best ... that dressing it tasty with a slight kick.

Shaina B.

Yelp
I visited Pura Vida Cocina for the first time this last week because I have food allergies and they popped up when I searched "soy-free." I called and asked what cooking oil they use and the server was very pleasant and answered all of my questions. They take reservations but also allow walk-ins. They also have tented outdoor seating. When I arrived I asked a few more questions and decided on the pork belly tacos. They were super good!! I enjoyed everything about my meal and the service was very good. I'm happy I stopped in.

Connie L.

Yelp
Two friends and I were visiting and doing a bunch of wine tastings in Mcminnville on a Wednesday in October 2019. Along the way, we decided to stop here for lunch. The restaurant wasn't too busy when we arrived, unsurprising given it was a weekday, so we were still able to be seated immediately. The menu had so many delicious-looking options, it was hard to decide on what to get. It's worth noting there are many, many gluten-free options, which would be great if anyone in your dining party can't eat gluten. I decided to get the arepas with pork belly, since I'd heard of arepas and thought they sounded awesome, but had never tried them before. The arepas with pork belly came in a generous portion, and the dish was wonderfully flavorful. I would definitely recommend paying extra for the pork belly; for me it made the difference between the dish being a full meal versus just a snack/appetizer. My friends were really happy with their orders as well. The special of the day was a cochinita pibil, which looked very hearty and delicious, especially on a brisk autumn day. Given the flavors and quantity of the food, I felt the prices were very reasonable. The restaurant and facilities were clean. If you're in the mood for Latin American food, definitely give Pura Vida Cocina a try!

Debbie A.

Yelp
The restaurant doesn't have much ambiance but it makes up for it in the food and wonderful service we received. We tried several items; the avocado salad, the taco trio (beef, pork belly and chicken), and the mole enchiladas. It was all delicious! We will definitely be back.

Michel A.

Yelp
Our meal at Pura Vida Cocina was delicious beyond expectations. Sat outside in a private plastic structure with heater out front of restaurant on 3rd street in heart of McMinnville, well ventilated for time of Coronavirus. Service was attentive. Every dish was delicious and unusual, from fresh chips with salsa, beans and guacamole, fried avocado with mixed greens, black bean, chipotle aioli, and Cotija cheese to main dishes, finishing with plate of perfectly cooked churros. Only way they could improve would be to enhance the wine list to reflect the Willamette Valley

Katie T.

Yelp
We had an exceptional meal here last night. Everything was delicious and highly recommend the shrimp rellenos and the pork belly tacos!!

B K.

Yelp
Cubano sandwich with pan fried and sea salt side was delicious! Nice people too. Cuban Sandwich

Melissa H.

Yelp
Wow! As a South Florida Cuban, I can definitely say that this place is amazing and authentic! Service was fast and friendly! Make a reservation because they are a hot spot!

TR H.

Yelp
I gave five stars for the best international tacos I have ever had to date. The soft masa tortillas are the best in three counties. The cultural ambiance is pleasant. The service was okay, had to chase down my horritos drink, after I got through my chips and one of my taco's, and to ask for some habanero sauce, which is one of the best hot sauces I have ever had. The food is top notch. Service is ok. I will be back to try the chili relleno. I do recommend this place on account of being the best I have had. And, as always - bon appetite!

Bob E.

Yelp
Great food with a Chilean taste and design. The portions are just right. The empeñadas are wonderful. We will definitely go back!

Joan F.

Yelp
Another reason to live Mcminnville--our lunch was exceptional: --vegan tacos that were filling, visually appealing and flavorful. The accompanying rice was equally delicious --salmon with quinoa and salad--perfectly prepared salmon with a bit of a crusty exterior and a moist, rich interior. The seasoning were pitch perfect and absolutely worked to enhance the fish. The veggies were fresh, evenly chopped and balanced out the salmon Our expectations were exceeded with exceptional service and food. I don't recall reading on the menu if the ingredients were locally sourced/ organic, but they certainly tasted vibrant. I'm confident that which repeated visits and more menu sampling, I could easily give this unpretentious restaurant five stars.

Dorothy R.

Yelp
Have been into this restaurant a few times and the food is always delicious and service good. We got the veggie empanadas and the barbs is beef tacos - so tasty!

Rudy T.

Yelp
The food is good, but the service left a bad taste in my mouth. Expect the waitress/waiter to take your order and bring you your food. Don't expect them to come and check up on you to see if you need a napkin, another drink, or anything else. Won't likely return.
