Pure Bean - Review - Idyllwild - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"There are several places to grab a strong cup of coffee in Idyllwild, but Pure Bean is our favorite—and also the most convenient. It’s located on the main corner downtown and opens every morning at 6am. That might seem early, but keep in mind you’re in a town that revolves around watching the sunrise while sitting on a rocky outcrop." - Brant Cox

The 11 Best Restaurants & Bars In Idyllwild - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"There are several places to grab a strong cup of coffee in Idyllwild, but Pure Bean is our favorite—and also the most convenient. It’s located on the main corner downtown and opens every morning at 6am. That might seem early, but keep in mind you’re in a town that revolves around watching the sunrise while sitting on a rocky outcrop. The coffee is certainly good, but the real selling point is the cozy sitting area with the most comfortable leather chairs our butts have ever touched. And we’ve sat in a lot of chairs.  " - Brant Cox

Such a gem in Idyllwild! Coffee is beyond delicious, and they have yummy vegan pastries too! Very nice and cozy inside to have a morning latte on chilly days, as well as pleasant outdoor sitting overlooking the mountains. And it’s open since 6am everyday! So happy I discovered it.

Pure Bean Idy is a great place to start your day. They open earlier than most places, ensuring plenty of available seating, whether inside or outside (I recommend outside for an awesome view of the mountains). The barista recommendations are excellent, so if you're unsure what to have, they've got you covered! Overall, it was a great experience, and I will definitely go again soon!

Google
Such a cute coffee place! All the pastries looked sooo good. We had two of the speciality lattes, one was caramel vanilla and the other was a mocha latte. Both absolutely delicious. I did ask for half the sweetness which for me was perfect. I usually get a vanilla latte anywhere else. We also got a croissant and a caramel sea salt cookie.

Google
Wonderful stop for a Joe and pastry! We split the Hummingbird Coffee Cake and the Shortbread Bar and it turned out to be way too much food. The Cappucino was excellent! We got there right in time as the line went out the door shortly thereafter. Really good place, but really slow. Take caution.

Google
Love the atmosphere here in this cute place with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Three baristas with decent coffee. Limited food selection. Very dog friendly with a dog bar. they have a nice wraparound deck where you can take your coffee and enjoy looking up at the mountain

Google
Happy staff are a plus, but when the staff are loud playing games while taking longer on orders gives a bad vibe! (A paying customer should always be the most important) AND PLEASE, train the staff on how to make a mocha! A mocha is not a glorified hot chocolate as seen in the picture, and it should NEVER look like one! 👀

Google
I don't typically leave many reviews, but I want to highlight the exceptional service I received calling in an order to Pure Bean Idy. I called wanting to do a coffee order for a friend who works nearby, and Matt the owner was gracious enough to walk it across the street to her. It is that level of service that really makes a business stand out. Thank you Matt for taking the time to talk to me and for what you did!!

Google
Wonderful, cozy coffee house. I really appreciated the great service! As a barista, I can say, this place has the best espresso you’ll find around this area!

Yelp
Love the coffee smell as soon as you walk into the shop. I wanted to try something different and got to the Citrus Summer, which consists of a blended mix of mango, dragonfruit, raspberries, and orange juice. FOH rep was nice and welcoming. Hardworking checking to see if they have my fruit smoothie blend ready to go. He checked and was good. Smoothie was blended well, no chunks. A bit too much raspberries, but decent. Lots of seats outside and inside.

Yelp
Paid this coffee shop a visit on Sunday, January 26th. It was a busy day and the wait was long, so I did a lot of people watching. The counter is very short for the volume of beverages in queue and with one barista making drinks, one on register, another female helping with the food and a second female assisting labeling cups and grabbing pastries. She was trying to help. What I was very grossed out and concerned about was that THAT young lady assisting the cashier and the barista kept adjusting her outfit, touching her hair and playing with her jewelry all the while cross contaminating all the cups she was touching. When I went back to the register to pick up a pastry the cashier forgot to add to my order, I asked him to grab the pastry because I didn't want the female cross contaminating my pastry. When I addressed the situation they were VERY confused...so I'm assuming your employees don't have food handler certificates or else they'd know that touching their hair and jewelry is not permissible. After I paid for my banana bread we turned to exit and my daughter saw them laughing and smirking at us. So be advised future patrons...your food and beverage may come with a complimentary side of dandruff...and you may not even know it.

Yelp
Super nice people here! Dog friendly like basically all of Idyllwild. Got an iced coffee to share with my hubby for the late morning. It was just the amount to pick me up we needed. They have plenty of outside seating and inside spots as well to kick back.

Yelp
Was enjoying a day in town and ordered some coffee. The interior of the cafe was so warm and welcoming. The workers were also super friendly and helped us customize our drinks. The drinks took a while to come out but it was pretty packed inside. We ordered Iced Chais and they were the perfect balance of nutty and sweet. Great place!

Yelp
Great coffee place in the center of Idyllwild. I stopped by Sunday morning it was super busy. The ambiance here is cozy, lots of indoor seating and outdoor as well. The coffee smells and tastes amazing. I got a cold brew with milk and enjoyed it much. Customer service is ok. A good spot to hang out and enjoy a cup of coffee. They also serve scones, cookies, muffins etc ..0

Yelp
We came up to Idyllwild again after about 9-10 years and we ended up at the same cafe we visited before. The line was super long around 2 pm. It was moving, so we decided to stay and ordered the iced hibiscus tea and the iced latte. The lady who took our order seemed like she was new on the job. She repeatedly asked what I was ordering and double checking what I ordered, which was fine, BUT the iced latte turned to a HOT Latte after about 25 minutes of waiting. The hibiscus iced tea came out almost instantly but the iced latte took a while. My husband came up to the barista to ask for our second order of drink, but was told there was 4 other orders ahead of us, the 4 drinks were made, people got up and left, and then more orders were called, more people got their drinks and left. We were still waiting on our iced latte. When they finally called for our order, it was a hot latte. My husband had it and was about to settle, but I came in and told the barista that we actually ordered ICED latte not a hot one. The barista apologized because they were swamped making drinks, and told the lady in the front that she had prepared the wrong cup for the order. Come on. She even repeated the order back to me like three times and still got iced v. hot wrong. The ambiance was cozy and warm inside, but it was also very crowded during the Holidays. Our experience here this time wasn't a great one, it could have been better, it's a shame because their drinks are actually pretty decent.

Yelp
Finally got to try Pure Bean yesterday. Typically, when I come here there is a long line. I usually have my dog with me, and she is not great waiting on a line. But yesterday there was no line. Lucky! Why 5 stars? 1. My cappuccino was flawless. They had an area where one could add cinnamon, cocoa, nutmeg. Nice touch. 2. They have skim milk. Very few coffee joints have skim milk. I'm not the only one that wants a cappuccino with skim. Am I? 3. They have several savory pastry choices. Most coffee shops have none. Clearly, they understand not everyone wants a sweet pastry. 4. Exceptional service. 5. Very comfortable chairs to relax in while enjoying your pastry and drink. 6. Puppaccino for my dog! I had a dill and gruyere scone. It was dry, needed more shortening, cheese and seasoning. I'm not taking off any stars. Just hoping management reads this, works to correct. I returned a second time today. Cappuccino again was perfect.

Yelp
We visited Idyllwild for the first time and decided to stop by Pure Bean Coffee House. It was such a great find! I had a cup of house coffee, which was excellent, and my husband had a cappuccino that he really enjoyed. The drinks were perfectly made, and the quality was on point. The staff was friendly and welcoming, making the experience even better. If you're in Idyllwild, I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try - it's a wonderful spot for a great cup of coffee! Bonus: They also sell the San Bernardino National Forest Adventure Day Pass - which was great and convenient!

Yelp
The staff here are all very friendly and helpful! While I was there, the staff were helping another customer who wasn't sure which bag of coffee to get. They let her try samples of what they'd brewed today and they offered to brew a different one tomorrow morning so she could try that one too. It's refreshing to see such excellent customer service . I tried this place after seeing they have gluten free options and it was worth it. I tried a gluten free vegan hummingbird coffee cake and a gluten free blueberry muffin with a crumble topping; both were amazing! I also tried a couple of their seasonal offerings: a pumpkin pie latte and the "mountain lodge" which is a hazelnut mocha latte. Both were very good! I took my items to go, but they have a really nice indoor seating area and outdoor seating as well. Very highly recommended! This is going to be my go-to spot every time I come to Idyllwild.

Yelp
Pure joy. Pure QUADRUPLE-SHOT tall lattes. Pure HOMEBAKED chai scones. Pure efficiency from the baristas. Pure Bean Coffee. Bean there, done that....and it's awesome!

Yelp
Really good coffee. Can't wait to go back.... Right on the square. Tons of parking. Easy. Central and fun to walk around... Must stop, while in the area....

Yelp
Very good coffee with good atmosphere. Loved the cozy feeling. The staff was very nice too.

Yelp
Discovered this coffee joint while exploring the town of Idyllwild. Long story short, I was satisfied but wasn't impressed. Before you guys question, parking shouldn't be an issue. They have a parking lot and wherever you park in the town honestly isn't a far walk from here either. Service was great. Everyone seemed genuinely down to Earth. The cashiers were very patient with us when we were deciding what we wanted. I felt like they did a great job at explaining what was what on the menu. Overall I have nothing bad to say about the service. Ambiance was very cozy. Idyllwild is a very smal and cozy town and this coffee shop definitely fit that vibe. It wasn't over the top, and it gave the vibe of where you'd see usuals frequenting the place. There is plenty of seating, both couches and tables and outdoor seating. They're very dog friendly as well. I had the Cozy Cabin latte. For a cold day, yesit definitely kept me warm. But there was nothing special about it. I was also kind of sad to see that a majority of my drink was foam. The cup isn't even that big to begin with and my cup wasn't even that full. So that made me a bit sad. My boyfriend had the chai tea latte and there wasn't much that was chai about it. I'm all for supporting small businesses and this did the job at keeping me warm. But in terms of quality wise, I wasn't that satisfied. Next time I'm in Idyllwild, I won't say no to going here but I am open to see if there's somewhere else that can make my money seem more like its worth it.

Yelp
This coffee is really good. Had the cozy cabin latte with nonfat milk and it was delicious. They know how to make an espresso drink.

Yelp
This is a charming little coffee house/shop with all sorts of fancy coffee drinks. They've got baked goods, too. The interior is quaint and comfortable. Counter staff were all friendly. The coffee drinks we tried were very nice. One of the pastries we tried was pretty average, while the other (the churro scone) was terrific. So it goes. I would happily return.

Yelp
Needed a caffeine fix so found this coffee spot near our lunch cafe. It was a chilly, crisp day so the shop was a nice escape from the cold. The interior is charming and comfortable. Got the oat milk latte - the drink was warm and satisfied my coffee fix. Service was super friendly too. Would come back again on my next trip out here!
google avatar

Doreen T.

Yelp
Located right in the middle of town next to the bear statue. Matcha latte with oat milk with an extra shot was good, but not exceptional. It was pricey and service was also a bit slow. They have a cozy indoor and outdoor seating. I just won't go out of my way here and would try other coffee shops in Idyllwild.
google avatar

Yelp
Service is usually very slow (for preparation even when there's not a long line) but coffee and other non coffee drinks are always exceptional. Today we ran into a husky in there with an irresponsible owner. The dog hurt my gSD and my dog nose was bleeding. I admire that it's dog friendly but management pls ensure whoever takes a dog in, will hold onto the lease. That owner just let there dog sit under the table without tying the leash to anything, or holding onto the lease. That was very irritated and not a good experience! My dog did even try anything and he was controled with a short leash
google avatar

Yelp
last year I was pleasantly surprised that the new owners had kept the woodsy, comfy homey vibe of Highland Grounds. only to return again, my six year in a row, to a Hip Slick and sterile Vibe. If I wanted L.A. -I would have stayed in L.A. If you have never been here before, you might just love it. But for me, the comfort of a mountain cabin is entirely gone, and the staff is gone as well, so disappointing.

Yelp
Beautiful, small coffee shop. They have outlets, good outdoors seating. Great hot chocolate and bergamot tea. Friendly service.

Yelp
The staff is bomb dot com No question The reason to go to this joint is the amazing staff of beautiful smart talented people . I can't call out names without leaving one out inadvertently but you all know who you are my favorite(s). Arnold Palmers on ice and pumpkin pie for the season currently is tasty and fabulous . Thanks for brightening my mornings afternoons grotto dips and rendezvous beach trips . Pure bean for life yo

Yelp
Was excited to try a new coffee place on my mini vacation trip. This place was good but didn't make an impression. Coffee was okay. It is a typical coffee place. Inside has seating but it was nice to sit outside on the "wrap around porch" like vibe. There was music playing near by and the weather was beautiful. Overall okay experience.
google avatar

Shauntina S.

Yelp
Super cute cafe in the heart of the main village square. They are dog friendly (clearly look at my pups face!). I had a dragonfly ice tea lemonade and it was pretty good. Not much seating inside, but lots on the deck. Everyone was friendly.

Yelp
I love this local coffee shop! It's nice and cozy and they have a great selection of pastries, coffee, teas and other drinks! I always pass by when I'm up in Idyllwild!

Yelp
I love this coffee shop! It's my go to place when we visit Idy!! It used to be named Higher Grounds.. but recently found out they were bought out by pure bean. Really sad. I've Im honest, the name pure bean for this coffee shops local is kind of wack! Higher grounds was just dope and matched the atmosphere of the coffee shop. We got the raspberry Italian soda! My husband says it was good! Exactly as stated, but ice made it flatten out fast. I got the campfire latte iced which was super delicious! Aside from lattes as a double shot having a lot of milk, this one I could still taste the espresso. Not a huge punch of caramel and vanilla flavor though but I didn't mind. Goat cheese spinach egg muffin was good! I just wish it wasn't so messy to eat!
google avatar

JP R.

Yelp
I always order a double espresso with milk on the side. Literally the best espresso in my lifetime. I don't know the young lady's name (just look for the cute blue hair). She knows how to make coffee and is sooooo friendly!
google avatar

Kyle V.

Yelp
Finally a coffee place that doesn't over sweeten! I got a vanilla latte and it was just 1 pump and just enough to give a little sugar but not too much. Too many places make it too sweet and you can't even taste the coffee anymore. The espresso was very smooth, highly recommend. They higher well and not just a random person to push some buttons. Thank you! Very friendly staff and a great ambiance.
google avatar

Josh K.

Yelp
Lots of gluten free options ... breakfast sandwiches, muffins, cookies. Good coffee also.
google avatar

Mahmut E.

Yelp
Good coffee shop, coffee was okay, not super spectacular. It's also a good place to sit and talk or do some work. Customer relations were good too. Price is normal for a mountain top coffee shop. I also tried white chocolate muffin, it was good.

Yelp
Score: 10/10 Buzzwords: R U Kidding me?!, authentic customer engagement, great coffee Visited this coffee spot FOUR times in the last THREE days. Early morning, brunch, mid afternoon - it didn't matter - this place served such great beverages and pastries. As a big strawberry banana smoothie guy, I was really impressed with the consistency of my smoothie. It executed the tightrope walk between not being overly watery and not being too thick/icy to perfection. Having enjoyed this first smoothie so much, I came back to try the mango smoothie the next day which was like Jamba Juice's Mango-A-Go-Go but again, less frozen and icy. For my last day's visit drink, I tried the Lily Rock iced latte which was the perfect blend of smooth and energizing cinnamon goodness in preparation for a long car ride home. My girlfriend cycled between a simple syrup latte, the passion mango tea, and the Cozy Cabin latte each of which she raved about. Because my girlfriend is the type of person to plan a whole day trip around coffee and teas, I am led to believe that she really enjoyed her beverages lol. As far as pastries go, my girlfriend and I shared the coffee cake which had the perfect amount of crumble to it, a blueberry muffin which wasn't too dry and retained the flavors of the blueberry perfectly, and the gluten free lemon doughnut which absolutely cemented this place as a solid 10/10 rating for us. The hints of lemon melted into our tastebuds with each bite and had us so shook, we ordered another for the car ride home. Regarding the customer service, it worth noting that upon each visit, we were greeted by an employee with a bright smile who actually cared what our response was to "how's it going today?" Overall, the vegan/gluten free lemon doughnut is a MUST. And while you're at it, you won't be disappointed to add on a fruit smoothie and/or coffee as your heart desires.

Yelp
Great spot, great peole, great coffee and treats. The vibes in the place were chill and low pressure for me and my 12 youth camp teenagers. The staff took time to explain different coffees and cake combos as well as assured me that I would love the donut or she would actually pay for it. She was correct. I also had a cup of Almond Milk Americana, it was a nice pairing but I wanted the coffee to punch my taste buds a bit more. Overall. Very satisfied and I hope to comeback more often, even it means driving up from Pasadena to do it.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Teas were 5 stars Service was 6 The nice barista was super sweet and helpful when I stressed about ordering a caffeine drink. She was flexible and made me a tea with lemonade to cut the caffeine. Super sweet petite with long hair in a pony tail. The customer service can make or break a place. The drinks were great too! We'll be back!

Allison W.

Yelp
So bad. Really bad sour coffee, milk not kept to temp, staff handling trash and then going back to making drinks without washing hands. Over all gross.
google avatar

Yelp
Pure Bean Coffee House, located in the small town of Idyllwild, was a lifeline on our weekend trip! My group and I managed to book our camping trip on the one weekend that got rain. Nonetheless, we woke up one cold morning and made our way to this local coffee shop where we could all unthaw out our limbs. They have a lot of drinks to choose from but I always get the basic latte (subbed with almond milk). It's a great atmosphere with tons of seating both inside and out. There are lots of couches, tables, and chairs, and just an overall great place to hang out. The service was quick too. The lady at the register was very helpful and sweet.

Laura

Yelp
Love this place. Lovely modern decor, super chill ambience and staff is so friendly. We arrived 5 mins before closing and they weren't pushy at all. I ordered an iced matcha with almond milk and it was so good! Perfect green color and not too sweet. I'm a pretty big matcha snob so I'm grateful to have found a good matcha up here. We also ordered gluten-free vegan donuts which were also fantastic. I like how many options they have. We'll definitely come back.
google avatar

Ricardo M.

Yelp
I had a vanilla latte and when I walked in it was very spacious. I stood in a long line but the line went by quick. I sat down enjoying the sound of Mack Miller. I saw a couple dogs outside and said hello. The vanilla latte was good and had 4 shots of espresso. Although I don't think the coffee was strong and it wasn't piping hot like I like. I still give it a solid 5 stars.
google avatar

Monica F.

Yelp
Great service and even better coffee. I ordered the mocha and my husband ordered his signature favorite cappuccino.
google avatar

Veronica L.

Yelp
I didn't get to stay and relax but it seemed like a nice place to sit and enjoy a coffee. I got a coffee, cold brew, and two cookies. Everyone was very nice. I recommend this place for quick coffee pick me up!
google avatar

Michael F.

Yelp
When are they gonna open up their bathroom? It's been closed for months. I believe there's a lot that you have to have a bathroom. If you have somebody seats maybe I'm wrong?

Sherrie K.

Yelp
I ordered a pastry. Waited. Asked the girl with tattoos, "is that cookie ready?" "You didn't order a cookie." "Yes I did, you must not have heard me." "You have to go to the end of the line." "Can you just add it to the order since you didn't hear me?" "No. Go to the end of the line." The most rude service!
google avatar

Lisa B.

Yelp
This was a great stop for us! I was parched after walking around the Idyllwild Gardens. I am not a coffee drinker, my husband is, but I am glad they had options for me. I had the Lemonade. My husband had the iced coffee with hazelnut. We also shared an almond croissant. We sat outside because it was gorgeous out. The Lemonade was delicious and fresh. The croissant was very tasty. My husband enjoyed his coffee. The lady who took our order was very polite. We even beat the rush. Pure Bean is a must try when in town.
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
The coffee and food are good, but the service is terrible. Never going again... I ordered my drink and food then my wife ordered hers. My drink came out, then one of her food stuffs then her drink, then nothing. Waited a couple min and still nothing. Asked about the remaining food and the girl said "you only ordered one food and one drink". We all know that's not true, since we had already received 2 drinks. She looked up the receipt and saw that she didn't even charge for my food and had forgotten about my wife's other item. She then charged me for my item and heated both of the missing items... except that my wife's was still cold in the middle. So at this time I have been gas-lit, forgotten and served cold food.
google avatar

Lillian G.

Yelp
The best lattes around !! And the service is so friendly & accommodating. Cute place & we'll definitely be back (:

Madonna R.

Yelp
My matcha frappe was pretty good, little weak, did t ask for whip with order, wanted to charge me separate, come on.
google avatar

Yelp
Coffee is good but not a place for anyone in a hurry. I've been coming for a couple of years now. Staff is terrific but zero sense of urgency even when the line is out the door. Frequently understaffed. Nice outside area. Recently remodeled.
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
Great coffee spot and dog friendly! They didn't have a huge selection of specialty drinks like the one I have in my town but the latte was really good.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of the bucket list... you know, things you must do at least once in your life. Things like watching a sunset at the top of the Eiffel Tower, hiking the grand canyon, swimming with dolphins. Well, if you're reading this, I'm going to add one to your bucket list... Enjoying a chai latte made by the lovely baristas Danielle and Meili at Pure Bean. Now I'm kind of a snob about my chai lattes, and my baristas for that matter. So my expectations are admittedly, unfairly high. Now it may have had a little to do with the mountain air, or the jovial conversation I had with the older gentleman in front of me while I was in line but when I was greeted by Danielle at the register with her playful banter, warm smile and my new favorite hair style (an intricate, yet laid back bun that I simply can't do justice to in words, well I knew something good was about to happen. As we waited for our order, I noticed Daniella's partner behind the counter, Meili, who was putting together the orders as fast as they came in. Now there was quite a line, enough to create a constant level of anxiety in even the coolest of characters... but not Meili. She moved with the grace, efficiency and yeah, i'll say it, the sass of a professional tango dancer. When we got our order, every sip was like the proverbial chef's kiss. So if you are lucky enough to live in or near Idllywild, I highly recommend making Pure Bean a part of your morning ritual starting today. If you live in LA, Italy, or Antarctica for that matter, do yourself a favor and make sure "Chai Latte" from Daniella and Meili is on your bucketlist and do whatever you must to make sure you get to cross that one off... before it's too late. : ) Jeff

Yelp
I come here regularly and am not disappointed with their coffee. I got the gluten free lemon blueberry bar, which I thought was a little pricey for $4.25. I love that they are open early and in the heart of town. The best coffee in Idyllwild is actually Black Mountain but they have limited hours.
