12 Best Breweries in San Diego, California

"Dedicated to sustainability and pure, quality ingredients, this brewery was started by a SoCal couple who traveled to Costa Rica before settling back in San Diego. Not only do they craft fine beers, but this brewery also supports local nonprofit organizations. So, you can drink your beer and do good, too. Their tap list has a good mix of classic flavors and experimental options, including beers with strawberries, hibiscus, chocolate, and peppers." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Pure Project Brewing Reveals Headquarters on Vista’s Hop Highway - Eater San Diego

"Grand opening on Friday, July 30, the 14,000-square-foot hub is a major leap from its modest origins in Miramar. Designed by Tecscape, Pure Project’s new main headquarters — formerly the Iron Fist space on Vista’s “Hops Highway” — now include a spacious tasting room within view of its 15-barrel brewhouse with canning and bottling lines, administrative offices, areas designated for parties and events, and a large outdoor patio. Alongside to-go sales, its taps will pour a rotating list of 20 beers as well as beer slushies." - Candice Woo

Google
This place has great beer, one of the best in the area. I also enjoyed some of the food trucks they had. However, they just recently changed to only serve empanadas which was very disappointing. I tried a few different ones and they were not good at all. Please bring back food trucks!

Google
Some of the best beers in the country let alone San Diego. Came here on vacation and stopped in to enjoy a couple beers. Incredible flavor profiles and service was top notch. Cool vibe inside and easy to spend some time while in San Diego especially if brewery hopping like we were. Cheers!

Google
This brewery is very unique and fun to visit. An ode to Costa Rica's, "Pura Vida," has been transformed to," Pura Birra." This is more of an ecological aware brewery, putting emphasis on giving back. The location itself isn't big, but it's goal is, so don't discount it. Very friendly staff and regulars definitely make this brewery a desirable place to visit. It is easy to prove when you walk up and every table is taken and there is a line up to the bar! Worth a visit!

Google
Exceptional beers with a wide variety of styles. Their west coast IPA and saison are my favorite. The staffs are very friendly. Stepped in 30 mins before the closing time but still got great service. Highly recommend!

Google
Great place, great beer, great people. Their empanadas are really tasty as well :)

Google
Great brewery putting our delicious beers! One of the best stops on our trip to San Diego. A variety of beer styles on tap that showcase what a great brewery they are.

Google
World class craft beer, seriously some of the best out there. I wish there was more I could take away in cans but the option of grolwers/crowlers is great. It is a super chill place with great service, but definitely cramped and pretty small - had a tough time finding seating with two of us. Also, fairly limited selection for the designated drivers/non-drinkers. Would love if there was a patio/outdoor seating. With all that said - it's worth it for the beer.

Francesca Boscolo

Google
My favorite local brewery! There's nothing else I need to say!

Yelp
Fun, lots of stuff to try and staff were on point!. We'll be back very soon. Hubby and friend were happy!

Yelp
Pure Project is an absolute treasure! My friend Marvin brought me here after work, and it was the perfect way to unwind. The drinks are outstanding--unique, flavorful, and crafted with so much care. Whether you're into IPAs, stouts, or sours, there's something for everyone. The service was impeccable. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about what they do. They took the time to explain the options and made great recommendations based on what we were in the mood for. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with a laid-back yet elevated vibe that makes you want to stay for hours. It's the perfect spot to relax, catch up with friends, and enjoy some amazing drinks. I'm so glad Marvin introduced me to this place--Pure Project has definitely become a new favorite, and I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. liked how there was two rooms, took the quiet one, both had bathrooms. Food truck wasn't there when I got there so gotta try it again one day. got the flight and was recommended all the new batches. I usually dont like cider but once there was a tree was nice and made a great start to the notes, as the staff was knowledgeable the build up combo was nice too, cloud mountain on the fourth note was memorable. but what was really interesting was the final sonora. the aroma was gently/shockingly good but the contrast to the taste was like woa. i think the order of notes made it better and a good finisher. got a good buzz and good time.

Yelp
While searching for a local stout came across the Chocosarus Rex. Loved the naming convention and knew I had to hit this place up. Been there plenty of times since and have never been disappointed. It's a rather smaller venue - but there are plenty of seats and it's a bit hidden which gives it a special atmosphere. Service has always been top notch, I've had plenty of discussions about Beers on tap - and have found some hidden gems. Most recently being their In for the Night - Brandy Beer. Seriously was one of the best Beers I had this year. There is always plenty of options and I've done a couple of flights - never found a bad Beer. There is generally a food truck available - which you can find out who's there on the website. I've had Tacos and Pretzels and never been disappointed by the food selection.

Yelp
I love this location of Pure! Always such a great vibe and fantastic service! Parking is easy, options are a plenty, AND a healthcare discount? I was very lucky I used to work a few minutes away from this location. Now that I don't - I still try to stop by as often as I can to get a great beer (or 3) and say hi to some awesomely friendly bartenders!! Pure Project is one of my favorite San Diego breweries and this location holds some great memories! Not to mention, hosts a great food truck!

Yelp
Pure Project in San Diego is a fantastic place to grab a beer, especially if you appreciate eco-friendly values. Everything about this spot reflects their commitment to sustainability, from their partnership with Patagonia to using Dyson hand dryers and eliminating paper/plastic bags. It's refreshing to see a brewery so aligned with environmental consciousness. Ambiance: The decor inside is thoughtfully designed, bringing nature indoors with lush, healthy pothos plants and wooden accents throughout. It feels calming and organic, a perfect place to enjoy a beer. I visited on a Friday afternoon, and while there was a good crowd, it didn't feel overcrowded. There's plenty of parking, and both indoor and outdoor seating options are available. The outdoor area is particularly nice, with water, dog bowls, and treats for furry friends. It's a dog-friendly spot, which is always a plus! Beer: Pure Project offers flights, which is a great way to sample their range of beers. You can get 5 tasters for the price of 4, which I thought was a great deal. They have a diverse selection of brews, and the quality is top-notch. One of the things that stood out to me was their grab-and-go beer options. The packaging is incredibly aesthetic, with some bottles even featuring corks. These beers make a statement, but they come at a premium price, ranging from $16 to $30 for a mid-size bottle. Overall: Pure Project is a must-visit for beer lovers, especially those who appreciate a brewery with strong eco-friendly values. The atmosphere is inviting, the beer is excellent, and the staff is friendly.

Yelp
This was an excellent brewery in a quiet part of town. There are other breweries within walking distance and there is also a food truck to alleviate any cravings. A great place for friends to hang out.

Yelp
Pure Project has spread far and wide in San Diego since their humble opening almost nine years ago, with five locations (so far). And each location has it's own charm. Pure Project Miramar serves up the same outstanding beers as the other locations. I am a big fan, and stop by whenever I am with friends looking for a thirst-quenching delight! Five stars!
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
I've really enjoyed the beers they put on the board at pure project over the years. Everything they produce exudes quality. I especially like their sours, stouts, and Belgian styles. They always have a few IPAs too.

Aneesh N.

Yelp
Great beer, great atmosphere and wonderful super helpful staff! Totally awesome place to grab a beer after work with your friends!

Yelp
No beer connoisseur, but these folks serve some of the best range and individual beers I've ever had at a brewery. Super friendly and helpful service. We came to this Pure Project b/c of the delicious tacos made fresh and served right in front on Saturday afternoons. Perhaps one of the best arrays of tacos I've had in San Diego. Perfectly crisp thick tortilla embedded with deliciously juicy carne asada imbued with flavorful spicing and garnishing. If you come too late (after 2:30) you might get beaten to the punch -- we got there at 1pm and got VIP priority in the taco line. I haven't been to others but this one is in an industrial park, which per my understanding is not normal. Seating setup could be improved, even with the overflow space.

Yelp
If you're a beer lover, pure project is a must-try. Their IPA is top-notch, and they're always coming up with new flavors. Whether you're into classic hoppy brews or fruity twists, they've got you covered. Chill out on their patio or grab a few cans to-go. Easy parking, too, so no stress

Yelp
The place is a bit small but the vibe is great. Drinks are good and service is friendly.

Yelp
Came back on a wed night and it was still pretty busy. Not sure when they added it but they have even more indoor seating now in a small space to the right of the main tasting room. Definitely a nice addition for cooler nights where you don't want to sit outside. We got the super beta ($8.50 for 16oz) and the Chocosaurus ($12.5 for 10oz). The super beta is essentially a hazy IPA. I personally just find theirs pretty middle of the road but still enjoyable. My partner liked the Chocosaurus and it wasn't too sweet. It definitely drinks heavier though and packs a punch at 12%.

Yelp
Small place but they do have an outdoor area. It's located in a random strip of businesses. But that could be a good thing, less foot traffic and random people. The service itself was really good. I decided on the Twilight Hues which is a "smoothie style ale" with mango and peach but my drink wasn't very smoothie like. It was more like a melted paleta. It was good though, not a strong alcohol taste and just a touch of sweetness from the fruits. I just wished it came in a smoothie form. Overall, the whole experience was pretty chill and relaxing. We stayed outside since the group I came with was too big to stay inside.

Yelp
I would say that Pure Project tops my list of favorite breweries and while this Miramar location is a little small, the beer is great and the service and ambiance to match. I brought my out of town friend here and he loved the variety of beers and we ended up getting about 12 different one so I won't attempt to name them all. However, my favorites are always the stouts. Another plus is that a food truck came at about 5pm and parked right outside which was perfect for those that want some food along with their beer.

Yelp
Best in San Diego. Their core beers are solid (Diamond Dust and Pure West are great) but they also have a lot of amazing stuff rotating in and out each week or so. They are a 1% for the Planet company and they follow through with that ethos not just by donating profits but in by mindfully choosing merch, volunteering in the community, or even throwing events with an intent to be as close to zero-waste as possible. It's a small ish space but there is a decent amount of patio seating. I LOVE the staff here--they are all genuinely friendly and kind as well as passionate and knowledgeable about the beer.

Yelp
The place is the best ! Atmosphere is awesome food truck are on point ! The employees are always on point giving the best recommendations!
google avatar

Jenny Z.

Yelp
Pure Project is easily our favorite brewery in San Diego! We've been to most of their locations and frequent the Miramar location as it is closest to where we live. It is a much smaller spot in an industrial plaza compared to the other locations but still has a few tables inside and out to hang out. They do serve a few non-alcoholic options including Athletic Brewing and spindrift. Service is always excellent at Pure Project, staff is always enthusiastic and friendly!
google avatar

Brianna C.

Yelp
I've been here at least five times, and most of the time I get the smoothie or fruity beers. I'm someone who likes sweet beer, and I was introduced to this place from a first date. The smoothie beer had me hooked afterwards Their sweet wine blends were also nice from what I recall. Love the prices, serving size, and vibes. Service is always friendly too. I also have bought their packs or bottles in the past so I can enjoy at home or with friends. I've brought girl friends who don't usually drink, but the smoothie beers definitely won them! Now that I no longer live in the area, I wish I could find another brewery that has fruity/smoothie beers like this one.

Yelp
Beer was ok, I still would go back for the ambience. Great service, very nice and helpful staff.

Yelp
Where do i begin? Pure brewing is purely amazing! Located by duck foot brewing company and ballast point, pure brewing is such a pleasant treat. When you first arrive you notice the greenery, loads of plants, great music, loads of sitting, and a nice outdoor patio area where you can enjoy some beer on a beautiful hot day. Attached you will find the most current beer list and I must say anything infused with fruit is delicious. They have all organic ingredients which makes their beer tastes even that much better. The service was great as well, as they make sure you feel welcomed. Loads of parking our front, and at times they do have food vendors, when I went there was no vendor sadly. I'd come here again, I ended up trying two flights and took half a case of beer home. I highly recommend pure. As always, enjoy fellow yelpers

Yelp
Smaller tasting room. Perfect for a group of four. Place seats 12 max. Staff is friendly and great selection of beers. Though half of them are IPA's

Ethan J.

Yelp
Fantastic selection and a good layout. They have a large variety of seasonal stouts as well as tasty lighter options. Friendly and knowledgeable service. Highly recommend the innovative Hard Smoothie!

Mirco G.

Yelp
We are SD locals and we LOVE this place!! Great beers, atmosphere and service!!! Super recommended!!!

Andrew M.

Yelp
Cool place. Hospitable and warm bartenders upon entry. Small tasting room but many picnic tables outside. Good beer. Food trucks too.
google avatar

Yelp
Hanging with Luke on a Saturday was a great way to burn a couple hours. He made several recommendations for my wife & I and we had a great experience. Pure Project remains a destination brewery in SD & customer service was excellent. We'll be back. Try: You Can't Sit With Us Citra Spree Das Public Eye

Yelp
this is one of my favorite breweries in San Diego!!! staff is super friendly and the beers are really lovely. It's a spot we visit every time we head down to SD. they do really nice limited smoothie beers that are super thick and fruity. We've also had some really nice double IPAs and triples here. 100% recommend stopping by and grabbing a flight to try stuff out. they have beers to go as well! great spot!! indoor + outdoor seating big parking lot right outside!
google avatar

Jake L.

Yelp
Love the original place where Pure started in San Diego, but for those that don't know ow the pura vida was more of a tropical story which you should check out on their webpage. Beers are oustanding as this company supports local businesses and all organic; seasonality is key, but there core beer, rain stands out as a must try beer. Miramar is the coziest of spots so get up to the bar and enjoy the various great staff members. The signature moss pure logo on the wall at each pure location is special and well done as is many other touches.
google avatar

Kristen W.

Yelp
We've been here multiple times and love their beer. The staff is always friendly! There's a few tables inside and more outside. They also have a separate room for private events you can book. Sometimes there will be a food vendor outside the spot which is nice to have. I've seen people bring in their own food too.
google avatar

Annastacia W.

Yelp
The service at this location is PHENOMENAL. The bartenders were great at answering any questions we had and let us try a few tasters. They were very attentive, even after we ordered drinks. The beers and slushes at pure project are always delicious and they have a rotating menu as well as some classics. I love trying all the new beers here and tend to get flights every other time I visit. There is plenty of seating here and a rotating food truck selection that you can look up on their website. There's also plenty of seating, even a separate indoor area that's detached from the main bar. It's very casual but has cute decor sprinkled around the area. I thought the Hillcrest location was my favorite, but honestly it's a tie now based on service alone.
google avatar

Stacey M.

Yelp
Love pure project! This location is fairly small so sometimes it's hard to grab a seat. They have a few TVs inside so the other day we stopped in to grab a smoothie style beer (always my favorite! So delicious) and watch the Pads game. The staff here are all so friendly and we got a chance to meet the "brew dog" the other day which was definitely a highlight. They offer flights so you can try many different beers at once.
google avatar

Liliana R.

Yelp
I'm used to driving to the vista location and did not know there was a Miramar location. I always come to try their smoothie beer. It sounds odd, I get it... but just trust me. You'll feel healthy and buzzed all at once!
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
My friend and I were next door at Kove and decided to stop by here for a beer. We didn't know what to get cause we like fruity light beer but the staff was so nice and gave us some recommendations and tasters! They were very patient with us lol we ended up getting the crimson blush and tropical mist! I love how they have some indoor seatings as well as outdoor! Pretty cool place to chill while drinking good beer. Definitely will be back!
google avatar

Nicholas G.

Yelp
Small brewery with a lot of pours. This place is walking distance from Duck Foot Brewing. I highly suggest parking mid-way between each location. We had a great time chilling inside, but their patio is where it's at in our opinion. Their brews are full of flavor. If the description says it'll have fruity hints, those hints are going to be obvious. Our pours were absolutely delicious!
google avatar

Anne G.

Yelp
Visited this brewery on our latest trip to San Diego. Great beer selection and high quality brews. We also tried the smoothie style beer, which I hear is the new up and coming style in the SD Craft community. It was delicious with banana and dragonfruit, sounds odd but it was perfect for a hot spring day! There was also a Hawaiian Poke Food Truck and great tunes. Plenty of of door seeting and umbrellas.
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Oh wow, the beer Steve and I had here we were instantly impressed with! We only managed to have one of their beers so I'm sure the other beer options would be just as impressive. We had the Midnight in London porter. It was such a treat to have because this porter had a great take to it. It had Earl Grey tea in the flavor profile which was a major asset to this porter. Of course I do love Earl Grey tea! This beer reminded me of the London Fog tea drinks I sometimes get at coffee shops as well. There are other flavors in the beer as well like a roasty flavor and a hint of coffee. It sounds like these flavors could clash with each other in a beer but that is absolutely not the case here as the ingredients and flavor is laid out in a competent and expert manner making a genuinely unique and enjoyable beer. Something I am always on the look out for!
google avatar

Janelle D.

Yelp
This is a great little spot! We sampled about a dozen of their beers, and their name does a good job representing what you get. All the flavors were crisp and clean. They had a smoothie style ale (Valley of Abundance) on tap that was my favorite of what I tried-the color was a neon pink which was pretty surprising and the flavor was straight up a banana strawberry mango smoothie- very yummy! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The tasting area was intimate and I loved the sustainable features and abundance of greenery.
google avatar

Chad R.

Yelp
Michael, Cassy and Linden are the best! They are pouring beers and sharing their amazing personalities. We love Pure and recommend it to anyone and everyone.
google avatar

Shawn H.

Yelp
This is a great spot and why I mainly came was for the RombombBurger. It's a good spot to come with your friends family and they are dog friendly. I came with my co workers on a Friday. Rombomb is not always there because they are pop up but check their Instagram for what days they are there. They are some of the best burgers I've ever had!
google avatar

Erin S.

Yelp
Stopped by on our brewery tour. First let me start by saying one of the ladies behind the bar was perfection. Sense of humor? Check. Beer knowledge? Double check. Super engaging and made me want to try all the things. A+ to whoever hired her. (Hawaiian shirt and glasses. Didn't catch her name.) Split a flight with my friend and the beers did not disappoint. I usually find one to hate AND YET hated none. Highly recommend coming in and trying what they have to offer. Flames of Eden? A+++++ #girlpower Hydra also and I don't even like IPAs (They are all trash. These? Not trash. It's probably cold out because hell just froze over.) Also do yourself a favor and try Sacred Constellation. Unless you don't like sours and then idk what to tell you. Expand your pallet. Jeez. Moral of the story: come here ktnx.
google avatar

Rexie S.

Yelp
I had the apple cinnamon kombucha it was so good. It tasted light and refreshing. The service was friendly and informative. She let us try them before we actually decided which we liked best and she could tell which was the one by the scent of it. Small indoor seating area has a little outdoor seating area, right next to Kive and had a food truck in front.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
Always a solid IPA, stout, or fruity drink at Pure Project. This location has limited indoor seating, but always has a friendly atmosphere. Nice music, drinks, adventure docs projected on the wall...definitely a chill place for a beer. Food truck is usually outside with yummy bites too.
google avatar

Christina I.

Yelp
First time going to the Miramar location last night and we had a great time! This was their original location. So cute and great vibes! Kerry was great helping us find the beers we liked! Try the smoothie beer you won't be disappointed!! Will come again for sure!
google avatar

Ken M.

Yelp
Arriving on a lightly rainy, Friday afternoon, the front patio seating was full of socializing patrons and grilled food was available. The indoor scene was equally vibrant. Of the beers we tried, Uncovered Roots stole the show. This is an imperial purple stout with ube, coconut, cacao and coffee.
google avatar

Gene L.

Yelp
What an awesome microbrewery! My friend in SD took me here knowing I was a beer lover on my most recent visit. Quick hits: - The murkies are amazing (What they're known for) - Can assemble your own flights - Loved their sours - Can bring in any outside food! - Outdoor seating including tables and umbrellas in the parking lot outside and dog friendly - Located in a commercial office area with plentiful parking I paid for a checked bag fee just so I could haul a bunch of beers from here back to the east coast. If I'm ever back in SD, definitely want to come back!
google avatar

Kimmy T.

Yelp
Cool little brewery in an unassuming business complex! I was giving my sister and BIL a San Diego Beer tour over Christmas break and this was on their list so we swung by around 8pm on a Monday night and they were surprisingly busy! They had some really cool brews like smoothie beers and of course IPAs - no food on site but you could buy bags of popcorn. Tasting flights we're the name of the game so we could try them all and I will say, while I'm not a craft beer connoisseur, my BIL is and he liked their offerings so much that he bought a glass to baby in his carry on all the way home to Florida! They were out of a lot due to the holiday weekend but they did have a few sister brews (is that the term?) and i think I remember a barley wine as beer alternative. If I worked nearby, this would definitely be a spot to stop in! While they have a cute patio with strung lights and nicely decorated interior, because it's a bit away from anything else remarkable, I will probably try the balboa park location next time. Give them a shot!

Yelp
Decent little spot in Miramar. Friendly staff with a decent variety of brews. The tasting room is small with a few tables outside. They do have food vendors on certain days and there is plenty of parking. Would recommend for beer lovers
