Matthew Kenney’s Vegan Restaurant Empire Shows Signs of Rot | Eater LA

"I recall that Pure Food and Wine, where Kenney gained renown for raw vegan cooking alongside partner Sarma Melnagailis, became the subject of wider scrutiny and was featured in the 2022 Netflix documentary Bad Vegan: Fraud. Fame. Fugitives.; its backer Jeffrey Chodorow described Kenney as “a very talented chef with a bad financial history,” a characterization that the new reporting revisits in the context of alleged financial and workplace misconduct." - Matthew Kang

Netflix’s ‘Bad Vegan’ Is Based on a True Story, But It Only Scratches the Surface of Restaurant World Crime | Eater

"A New York City raw-vegan restaurant that became the focal point of a high-profile criminal scandal involving co-owner Sarma Melngailis and Anthony Strangis. The pair faced charges including grand larceny, tax fraud, defrauding investors, and labor-law violations, then went on the run before being apprehended in an episode that gained notoriety when they reportedly ordered a Domino’s pizza to a Tennessee hotel. Employees accused management of stealing wages, the business ultimately closed, and Melngailis later described sustained psychological manipulation by her partner—claims that included elaborate lies about immortality for her and her dog Leon." - Amy McCarthy

Netflix’s ‘Bad Vegan’ Is Your Next True Crime Obsession | Eater

"Once a celebrity-packed raw-vegan destination in New York City, this restaurant and its chef were prominent proponents of a diet that avoided cooking above 120°F. In the early 2000s the chef was a high-profile figure, but by 2015 she disappeared amid accusations that she had stopped paying staff, vendors, and her landlord; employees unionized and walked out over unpaid wages. She was later charged with fraud and labor-law violations and became the subject of a documentary investigating how a celebrated restaurateur fell into scandal, entered a controlling relationship, and transferred large sums from her businesses to personal accounts." - Jaya Saxena

A Second Act For Bad Vegan’s Sarma Melngailis

"Once a high-profile raw-vegan restaurant known for items like raw vegan lasagna and cocktail offerings such as “master-cleanse-tinis,” the restaurant’s former Gramercy space sat empty for years — dark, its brick-red walls whitewashed — after its collapse amid fraud, unpaid wages and bankruptcy. It attracted celebrity patrons in its heyday and later became the focal point of a hit documentary that reawakened public interest and controversy over the owner’s portrayal. The founder sees the site as the last independent project she loved and hopes to revive its mission of making plant-based food both healthy and fun, while investors and partners have debated leases, buyout figures and documentary plans for a possible reopening at the original Irving Place location." - Allen Salkin

‘Bad Vegan’ and the Real Story Behind Pure Food and Wine

"Opened in 2004 as a raw-vegan fine-dining destination in Gramercy, this glamorous, three-dollar-sign restaurant made plant-based food feel glossy and scene-y rather than granola — candlelit garden seating, a yoga-sleek bar crowd nursing signature cocktails like the Master Cleanse Tini, and frequent celebrity diners. The menu highlighted items such as spicy Thai lettuce wraps, zebra tomato-and-zucchini lasagna with pistachio-basil pesto, and cauliflower couscous with pickled Persian cucumbers and cultured tree-nut cheeses, earning praise for making health food feel fashionable. Originally a collaboration between two chefs with backing from a prominent restaurateur, ownership later consolidated under the co-owner and the business was profitable for years. The operation ultimately unraveled after the co-owner became involved with a con man who convinced her to hand over account access and large sums of money; staff suffered repeated missed paychecks, employees walked out in winter 2015, and the restaurant closed permanently that spring after roughly $1.6 million was moved out of business accounts. The pair were later accused of fraud and went on the run, were eventually found, and the co-owner pleaded guilty, served a short jail term and probation, though she has since said she might one day revive the concept." - Rachel Sugar

Google
Friendly wine-focused shop with good options for whatever you're drinking! Christopher and his team are always so welcoming, patient in listening to what you're looking for, and spot-on with their recommendations. As an amateur in wine, I'm feel comfortable to ask questions here and learn about wine--they happily explain and share their knowledge and stories behind each bottle. And their tastings are always good!

Google
A gem of a little wine shop! The owner is a highly experienced sommelier who can pick an amazing wine for you, no matter your palate. The entire store is highly curated with plenty of selections ranging from an everyday affordable bottle to a special occasion splurge. You won't find a bad bottle anywhere in this shop. If you're into learning about wine, this is the place to be!

It is rare that you go into a wine store and every bottle is amazing. Pure Wine is that store. The owner has curated his offerings to the max. I bought a mixed case and every one is amazing. All at very nice pricing. On the other side of the store are some very special wines, hard to find that all you wine snobs should get while they last. They are all from a private collection and all are no longer readily available. All in all a jewel on 10th St where the best restaurant in NYC is hiding two or three doors away.

One of the best wine stores I’ve been to yet. Not only is the owner- Christopher welcoming and friendly, but he’s also highly knowledgeable about wine. I love my wine but depend on experts like Chris to help me select a good bottle, and he did. Plus, the store itself is nicely organized with some of the best wines- oh, and their wines are affordably priced!

Definitely one of the best, if not #1, wine stores I have ever to been to. Every wine I have had from their tastings is incredible. The staff is also extremely knowledgeable and helpful. One of the few places I know I can go in and pick any bottle and can’t go wrong. Thank you!!!!

Google
Love Pure Wine! It is so rare to find a local wine and spirits store where the person behind the counter is so knowledgeable about the product - the neighborhood needed it! I have been to Pure Wine a number of times now with questions about certain wines and suggestions for what I should buy depending on the occasion and have not been disappointed with their recommendations! And while the space looks elevated/expensive, there is a wide spectrum of wine and spirits across various price points (even some below $15 a bottle!) so even if you're not looking the break the bank, you will still walk out with amazing things to drink! Definitely recommend.

I stopped in for a bottle of Chartreuse and was blown away by the incredible depth of well - priced wines, especially some of the aged bottles that are almost never seen outside of high end restaurants. This is one of the wine shop gems in the city and the staff know their stuff.
