Purple Poppadom

"Enter via the glass door between the shop fronts and head up to a smart, sleek room with abstract murals, exposed brick walls and blonde wood chairs. Classic combinations are cooked in a refined modern style and given a personal twist; the seafood dishes are popular." - Michelin Inspector

exceptionally good, sophisticated mix of flavours superbly balanced. The sea bass is a must. All courses, attention to details was outstanding down to the chutney and popadoms.

During a recent visit to Cardiff, I had the pleasure of dining at the Purple Poppadom. It was a memorable dining experience for my family to have together and I’m glad we did it together. You can see the entrees we got in the pictures, but I will focus in on the main course as that was the standout by far. We got the chef’s signature dish, the Tiffin Seabass. I’m a sucker for a signature dish - and I can see why this one is one. The subtleties in the flavours and the way it combines together was very well thought out. The skin was crispy on the seabass, the curry leaf infused mash was something I wish I could make and the dish just worked. I love getting a Biriyani and my daughter felt like some chicken so we got that and the waiter suggested we pair it with the Dal Tadka. The Dal Tadka was almost the highlight of the whole meal so definitely get it, just well balanced and yummy and great to mop up with the top of the Biriyani and Naan. I said almost the highlight because there was more - the Lamb Roganjosh might be the best one I’ve ever had, I shared the meat evenly with everyone, but kept putting the sauce on more rice and eating it with Naan. Like most the dishes, the balance of the spices is a skill on show. Probably didn’t need dessert but the rose crème brûlée was calling out to me, so we shared some. I’ve never had a pink one before but the sugar cracked like it should and the flavours were well thought out, like all the other dishes. We left full and happy and stepped out into the gentle rain of the evening - all with different favourite things we’d eaten and grateful for the experience. The chef’s know what they are doing here and the wait staff were polite, friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Definitely get the dal.

So, this was a gourmet culinary treat to the tastebuds! I had visited this gem without expectations and could confirm I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of dining in. Very attentive services with explanations of what was on our plates and how best to savour them, whether scooped with a spoon for a painstaking and seductive experience or devoured whole for an explosion of varied flavours and sensations. So enjoyable, we left happy and satisfied. Thanks PP.

The food was very tasty. The service was excellent. The lighting was bright, which i felt reduced the atmosphere. Maybe a slight reduction in lighting would increase the atmosphere. I did feel it was a little on the expensive side but would go back, buy only on special occasions.

Me and my boyfriend booked here for our anniversary. The food was amazing, would 100% recommend the scallops as the sauce was the best thing I've tasted. The staff were very polite and even gave us complementary shots at the end of our meal. Its a beautiful restaurant and we enjoy every part of it!

Easy to book online. Decent and accommodating service. Definitely more expensive than most Indian restaurants. Indian food is usually served family style but this one is one dish per person - which was completely unexpected. In my opinion, that falls expensive and also monotonous. Their thali packages are a good idea. Food was wonderful, I don’t suggest ordering cocktails - too light and very little flavor. All the little things add up - bottled water, baskets of fried papads, large pours of wine, so just be mindful. They could handle a large group!

My husband and I came here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We had been previously and loved it so we were really looking forward to it. We had the tasting menu called Seven and it was amazing. The flavours were incredible and the paired wines were a welcomed addition. The staff are so friendly and attentive. We will definitely come back. Thank you

Had the best Indian meal here, the food was delicious and service great. Each dish was tasty, well spiced and presented perfectly. There were good vegetarian options as well as a good selection of meat and fish dishes. I just wish I lived nearer so I could make it a regular!

Yelp
We came by the Purple Poppadom on a family visit and it was far and away the best food we had in our four days in Cardiff. It serves elevated Indian cuisine that is beautifully made and creatively presented. This isn't your standard Indian take-out. The dining room is casual but stylish, the cocktails were terrific and the food top notch. Service was very welcoming and efficient. Had we been hungrier we would have gotten the tasting menu with the wine pairings. Highly recommend.

Yelp
This is easily one of the best meals I have ever had, anywhere in the UK. This is Indian dining done well! Go as hungry as you can so you can try everything! For starters, we had the Aloo tikka chat (5*), the Bombay chat (5*) and the creamery (4*) plus poppadoms with the trio of dips. For mains our table had: Chicken Nawabi - easily the best dish I have ever tasted. The chicken bhuna in this dish is NEXT level. 5 stars does not do this plate justice! 5* Tiffin sea bass - their signature dish and also delicious! 5* Nadal khozi curry - fragrant, deep flavours. Probably one of the best curries I've ever had but it had tough contenders in the other plates! 4* Raman Akhbari - the lamb leg with mash. Amazing. 5* For dessert we had chocomosa anand and the grilled pineapple dish. Do not think you can share played as the portions are small. The little choc filled pastry delights were melt-in-the-mouth crispy parcels filled with warm melted chocolate, on a bed of caramelised banana. These guys are outstanding. Do not let the exterior and street fool you. This is memorable.

Yelp
Had a fantastic meal here last night and from the moment we arrived to the moment we left we felt very comfortable and well looked after. The meal itself was beautiful both my 3 courses and my wife's who is not a massive fan of overly spiced food were super. This is not your typical Indian restaurant this is a special one

Yelp
Purple Poppadom is no ordinary Indian restaurant. The menu has a host of varied but specially crafted dishes with a Southern Indian bias. We had the tasting menu, which is probably the best fine dining Indian tasting menu I've had and knocked the socks of some recent experiences in London. The chef appeared halfway through the 14 dishes and explained the origins of the 3 fish dishes in front of us. Staff were friendly and service went like clockwork. Definitely a 5 star meal at a reasonable price for the delicious and well presented food on offer.
