The Best Coffee Shops in Portland

"In a city full of excellent coffee shops, Push X Pull stands out with its rotating wine pours and sleek, spacious café space, which hosts a mix of industrial accents like polished concrete floors and maple, balanced out by an abundance of natural light and pastel colors. Home coffee drinkers will appreciate the brewing gear, range of coffee processing methods, and varieties for retail bags, with plenty of sweet natural coffees, mostly from Latin America and Ethiopia. Other standout menu items include the Suzy, a latte with raw honey, Ceylon cinnamon, and Himalayan pink salt, and bolos — Portuguese-style sweet muffins baked locally by Jen’s Pastries." - Eater Staff

Google
Amazing coffee, very cool looking location and incredibly knowledgeable baristas! Wow, they serve up some amazing coffee. Got a pourover from China, and it was just incredible. Super fragrant, creamy, fruity and very well-extracted. The location has a certain theme to it. For the most part they are consistent with their branding, with my small nitpick being that the cup should have been blue as well 😅 Had a wonderful time here, definitely recommend coming here to try out some great beans!

Snacking in Saudi

Google
The banana w/ black sesame latte is exquisite. The single origin espresso lends bright, fruity notes that perfectly complement the rich, sweet banana flavor in this cup. The barista was also very friendly and offered me a sample of their drip coffee to try (which was also very bright, citrusy, and refreshing)! I’ll def be back for more 👏🏼👏🏼.

Google
Came in the buy beans for home. I let the barista know that I’m still new at this and she was extremely helpful with choosing beans and was very friendly to work with. I tend to be hesitant with coming into coffee shops with questions, but I’ll definitely be back! I’ll include a photo of the beans I went with, which I’ve been very happy with!

Google
Pretty hip coffee shop with great lighting. Ordered the Americano and Life is Peachy. I feel like I didn’t get much out of the Life is Peachy drink because it was mostly ice

Google
The anaerobic coffee is wildly good. Like a mocha, but just pure coffee. We tried three espressos and two cortados, and each was technically perfect.

Google
5/5 experience, loved the oat cortado. The espresso was so good, we found it initially at Deadstock since this is a collaboration between the two shops. Came here to grab the bag and tried it in a cortado. The baristas were both great, too.

Google
Very hip cafe with a quiet atmosphere that's conducive to a focused work environment. Come here to drink coffee and use your laptop in peace; the bar comes highly recommended if your going solo, but for couples there's a cute booth corner with a shelf of cassettes to listen to, and if you have a big group and you need to have a meeting, they have a long table with lots of seating to accommodate your party.

Minji

Google
Pour over coffee is slightly acidic and soooo delicious. Pour over for here option can be refilled once. They have free Wi-Fi and seats are also good to meet your friends, work, study whatever. I want to try the foods next time!

Yelp
My friend is obsessed with espresso and found this place after doing some deep research. Upon arrival he started a 20x minute conversation with the barista about all things coffee. I definitely learned a lot listening about coffee types, pulls, pushes, flavors and pretty much anything an espresso lover would converse about. The coffee was really good! It makes me want to try more mom and pop coffee shops! This place also has a lot of seating and tables for people to hangout and study or chill. I could see myself hanging out here for a couple of hours if I needed to get some work done, while having a coffee.

Yelp
Went in on a Sunday while at work and asked for dark roast pour over. The nice gentleman behind the counter was genuinely friendly, knowledgeable and knew I needed my coffee quickly b/c I was on the clock. He took good care of me in that short time and I didn't feel like I was interrupting him. Simple I know, but it was nice to just receive great customer service from a pro who enjoys their job. Thanks!

Yelp
Great coffee, great service, and great vibes. I got a specialty latte, called The Suzy, but with no honey, and I substituted almond milk. I highly recommend!!

Yelp
Stopped by here to get out of the house and do some work. Came in on a Saturday and it had a good amount of street parking available so it wasn't hassle. The place had a good amount of seating available and there was wifi available to use. Not many outlets, so just be aware to have your electronics fully charged prior to going if you'll be there for awhile. Ordered a latte with oat milk and it came out with a cute design. The coffee itself left a bit to be desired. The ratio for milk to coffee wasn't what I would prefer, and the taste of the the grind wasn't as prevalent as I would have liked. The latte was warm, so I wish it came out a little hotter so I could enjoy it for a longer period of time. Not a bad spot overall, but I don't think I'd make a trip out if it unless I was already in the area.

Yelp
An awesome coffee roaster located in East Burnside. There's plenty of street parking and shops within walking distance to eat at, check out, or drink at. I forgot to take a pic but we ordered a bag of their Colombia Finca which had notes of raisins. We ground and brewed that after returning home to CA and it was superb. We visited on two separate occasions and ordered a cortado and iced vanilla latte with almond milk each time. Such a great cup of coffee and some place I'd revisit again and again. The space is quite large and spread out, which works well if you're meeting someone, want to hang out, or stop and work for a little while.

Yelp
The way I see things, there are two levels of coffee shops I enjoy going to: those that are comfy and, while the coffee is average, serve as a nice third space in the community where I can go to get out of the house and hang out. Then there are those where the coffee is bomb, where Portland coffee lives up to its name -- strangely these are usually ever so slightly less comfy to hang out in, with the decor focused on hipness rather than comfort. Form over function, you might say. Push X Pull is one of the latter spaces. Beautiful, trendy decor (love the turquoise motif), slightly uncomfortable chairs and benches. But oh the coffee... the coffee is in that upper echelon that gives Portland the reputation it deserves as Coffee City USA. Every drink I've had has been great, and well prepared by the skilled baristas. Latte art is on point, people. They source and roast their own beans, which are naturally dried. I'm not sure how that affects the flavor, I'm not an expert ok? But it's good. And bougie. Food-wise they have a nice little menu of fresh pressed waffles and breakfast sandwiches on bolo bread; can't go wrong either way. There's also an interesting list of special/seasonal drinks which are all fun to try. My only complaint is here, because in the 2ish years I've been coming to PxP that list has never changed! Minus 1/2 an imaginary star... Overall, this is a trendy coffee shop and roaster whose espresso drinks are in Portland's top tier.

Yelp
Horrible. I wish I could give zero stars. Truly deserving of that rating. Came in this morning and the cashier was incredibly rude to me. It was my first time coming here. I asked the cashier if there is a drink that is the most popular, and I got a sarcastic response. I took a menu to keep looking since it's my first time there. I hadn't even left the cashiers area, when she said "can you leave the menu here". There was literally another menu that nobody else was using. After that, I left to go to another coffeeshop. Horrible, awful, and rude customer service. Literally one of the rudest coffee shops I've ever been to.
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
I have been here quite a few times. I feel like I'm teleported to LA where you get served coffee with an attitude. I do warn people before we go in "they ate extremely rude, but the coffee is great". Today I went in and decided this is the LAST time I will be coming in. The person making the coffee was EXTREMELY rude and disrespectful. They just stared and made rude comments. It's an extremely uncomfortable place to visit. I won't be coming back or bringing people back! It's a beautiful place with great coffee. However don't expect anyone to be nice or you. (Except the girl works the register) One of the people in our party is currently going through chemo and we thought, let's get him a nice coffee. The same person making his coffee was a absolutely rude to him. If you see a guy with a dad hat and dad sweater, don't expect him to be even fake nice to you. I've dealt with him so many times.

Yelp
We get coffees and sit down to work, like everyone else here because coffee shops are no longer places for conversation, they are work spaces for lease. Forgot my headphones so now I have to listen to multiple people taking calls, in a coffee shop. The art school seats albeit nostalgic are not comfortable. Then there's the fruit flies crowding the table. I'm ducking and dodging flies. Hopefully one doesn't land in my coffee. The person who took our order mistakenly made it to go, so we can't even enjoy our coffee like others. I've been here once before so I know the drip gets a refill so I ask for one, but the barista says no because I have a to go cup, then asks if I'd like an explanation why, to which I respond "no". The person taking my order immediately leaves the station so now I can't even order. I'm not even being difficult, I just want to carry on with my order, but the barista insists on telling me why even though the explanation is unsolicited. I didn't want an explanation, just to order coffee and sit back down. If you want the free coffee be very explicit that you want a 8oz drip coffee for here. The coffee is pretty good, music much to my liking. If they wanted to live up to the indie vibe at least play music from the records and tapes lining the place instead of just using them as props. I liked drinking my coffee from a mug the first time, but this second visit I saw a different side of Push X Pull. The magic is gone. Portland has so many coffee shops, won't go out of my way to come here anymore. The feeling is mutual I'm sure, because customers here are treated like they are disposable.
google avatar

Kathryn S.

Yelp
Every time I come here it's like coming home. The baristas are always so welcoming and inviting, as well as knowledgeable about the coffee they're brewing. I'm constantly learning about new ways the coffee I'm drinking is being processed/washed/etc. and they're always so helpful when telling me what I'm drinking. I initially came for the vibes, but I keep coming back for the quality & familiarity.

Yelp
Relaxed vibes for reading, working, or talking and deliciously snobby coffee without any barista attitude. That's how I'd sum this place up. I can't believe I'd never been here before. I love really good coffee... when it's made into something with cream and/or sugar. I'm not at the level where I can just drink it black. Yet. Push x Pull has good coffee. They roast it in house. When I asked for a recommendation, the friendly barista suggested 'The Suzy' prepared drink for me. It was delicious. Great coffee base with unique flavors on top, all presented with a cute design in a big bright yellow cup. My black-coffee-loving friends went for a straight drip pour. The vibe here is cool. Some folks were working on their laptops, others reading, others chatting or having meetings. Music was good and not too loud. A variety of tables for bar, booth, or table seating. Only thing that would be better is a comfy couch I could sit on all day! :) Wood furniture, teal colors, big windows. The baristas greeted some folks like they were regulars. I signed up for their coffee subscription. It's on the pricey side at $22 per shipment so I probably won't do it for long. But if all their beans are as good as the prepared latte was... then maybe. I'll be back with an update!
google avatar

Yelp
Smooth, rich drip coffee happily poured into my own travel cup. Cheerful, breezy, quick service. The sign on the door says "no cash on premises," but they're okay with it as long as you don't need change. A nice location on a relatively quiet block.
google avatar

Yelp
This place has been open and brewing coffee for how long? If you hear their slogan it's "ROASTING COFFEE SINCE A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO"which is kind of a cool saying. Looking at their Yelp reviews, they've been doing it since 2018. How the hell have I never heard of them before? It's a casual retro vibe that strikes you as you step through the door. It's a hipster analog vibe in this digital world. I can easily see someone posted up with a typewriter here wasting the day away working on their prose. Now what we really came here for was the coffee. What we got was excellent espresso poured with fantastic latte art by the quirky duo behind the bar. Dude's latte art was slightly better than the gal's but both were as good as you'll find anywhere else. You get what you pay for here. I think both of our drinks totaled around $11-12. Probably about the going rate these days, not sure if there's a Vegan tax for swapping to oatmilk or not. It's just nice to be able to sit inside a cafe again while sipping excellent bean water with frothed milk from ceramic cups.
google avatar

Elaina P.

Yelp
This is my favorite favorite favorite coffee place ever in Portland and also the whole world. This is the place that turned me into a coffee nerd. They take specialty coffee to a whole new level with a constantly evolving curation of gorgeous beans. I about died when they started offering wine service, as well. I've had some very rich experiences here between coffee notes that spoke to wine notes - the people who run this place are smart. Xoxoxo
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
9.2/10 on the coffee and the breakfast sandwich is equally as good. They stick to what they mastered with amazing service, in house roasting and all around great vibes!
google avatar

Mark E.

Yelp
Huuuuge fan of coffee. A passion, addiction and respite from living in this weird city. PXP simply makes great coffee. Been here three times and was pleasantly surprised by the quality, taste and service. The coffee isn't at all bitter and brewed fresh when you order. It also doesn't taste burnt, like many other places that use closed roasters. If you're anywhere near Buckman, stop by. You won't be disappointed. The place is big, roomy with lots of seats and a few tables.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
In a sea of excellent coffee houses, this one was the odd miss for us. But it might be us, not them. At least the coffee taste different. We didn't like the different taste, but maybe you will.
google avatar

Alexa R.

Yelp
Coffee tastes like compost. Fruity but kind of like an rotten orange. I would not recommend.
google avatar

Minh Thu N.

Yelp
Cute little coffee spot with nice, relaxing decor. We just stopped by upon stumbling by it, and it's a good spot. Good coffee and drinks.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
easily my favorite stop on the great portland coffee tour of summer 2022, and that's saying a lot, because portland is full of great roasters. i also had deadstock, heart, coava and proud mary while in town, and push pull was outstanding. the folks working were super friendly and gave great suggestions in picking out a bag of beans to take home. i'll definitely be back!!
google avatar

Olga I.

Yelp
With Portland slowly reopening, I've found one of my new favorite coffee spots to sit and work. They have 1 hour indoor seating that is open with a purchase. The space is really clean and they sanitize each spot after customers, so I highly recommend stopping by, grabbing a coffee and some good food, and supporting a local business. Plus, their coffee is delicious!
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
Was up in Portland visiting a friend, we went here to try out the coffee and I have to say the service and the coffee was amazing! Had a pour over and some espresso of some of their more select offerings. Very delicious and the service was amazing as well! Picked up three bags of coffee on my way out to take back home to have and share with friends. Definitely would come back again. Look at this perfect microfoam on my friends mocha!
google avatar

Bobby D.

Yelp
Good coffee Disappointed by customer service. I went here today because they have inside seating. When I entered there were 2 available tables. I ordered my coffee to go anyway. Good thing because the barista told me the tables weren't available for single people. But that I was welcome to sit at one of the outside tables, in the rain. To me that is as good as telling me I'm not welcome in the store because there is a priority protocol for some other costumers. I'm sorry I'm not popular enough to get a table at your establishment. What a loser I am for being alone. I should get some friends so I can go to this shop and be seen inside with friends and help make their image better. Maybe I could post photos on Instagram and other people would follow me to your shop. Help I'm trapped in a black mirror episode. Or is it just portland?
google avatar

Collin G.

Yelp
This place was fantastic. Staff were super helpful and the espressos were superbly done. My only regret is that I stopped here on my way out of town so I can't go back any time soon.
google avatar

Scott p.

Yelp
First time here, hanging out while my car gets fixed at Subaru a few blocks away. Good coffee, good people, good music, architectural vibes, well designed. Worst issue is that sounds to echo. This place is a keeper.
google avatar

Not S.

Yelp
Pushing shots must take a lot longer than pulling! It wasn't quick by any means. It was average in every way. Close by? Sure pop on in, not so close? Not missing out
google avatar

Kay L.

Yelp
Wow. This coffee is sooo good we got a second cup while sipping on the first one. We got an iced latte with maple syrup. The coffee is strong and has a very lovely smell. Highly recommend!!! I will definitely come back when I'm in the area again.
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Had a very nice oatmilk Latte here and enjoyed the indoor dining while waiting for a friend to finish a workout nearby. Friendly staff. Fast internet. Will return when in the area.
google avatar

Andy B.

Yelp
I've worked in the offices above Push X Pull since they opened in 2018, and have had dozens of meetings there or grabbed a quick cup of coffee or latte on my way into work. (The cortado is particularly good.) Very high quality coffee in a very competitive town for it, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. And, when there isn't a pandemic on, the seating inside is ample and a comfortable and convenient place to get some work done.
google avatar

Dave S.

Yelp
During the pandemic PDX roasters have pulled back from serving pour-overs and have shrunk their coffee inventories, but not PXP! You can still find coffee beans from almost a dozen countries and their Costa Rican thermic beans are stunning. Washed, natural, honey processed, anaerobic, and thermal processes are all well represented here at a price the rest of us can afford. They do have food offerings that are quite good as well including vegan offerings, and you're advised to order food online if that's really important to you. The team at PXP are some of the nicest people in the biz and are happy to talk coffee if there's not a big line waiting. Yes there is seating, but just like everywhere in PDX it's very limited at this writing so don't count on sitting inside.
google avatar

Alissa A.

Yelp
I am a next level coffee nerd and have had coffee around the world; the two cups (so far) I've had at Push x Pull have been the best. Period. Friendly barista happy to engage and delight the coffee fanatic in you. Eclectic and rare bean selection. This is coffee for people that love coffee in its purest sense, bringing out all the flavor and sparkle in those perfectly roasted seeds. Enjoy!
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Staff very friendly. Let us sample a bunch. Every cup was amazing. GO HERE to try the anaerobic coffee. Had a version where the beans are fermented with the fruit for 2-3 days -- almost no acidity, tasted so much like the coffee cherry. Amazing and unlike any other coffee I've had. Small place with a 2-seat leather sofa, few counter top seats.
google avatar

Seiji N.

Yelp
Beautiful blue, lots of plants, wood accents, great coffee. Need I say more? The place is perfect to work in or hangout with friends, and is run by amazing and friendly staff. The coffee here is incredibly fun and tasty if you love processed coffee. Their Ethiopia is my go-to on espresso, but almost every coffee they serve here is a good choice. Try an iced americano if you a real one.
google avatar

Alana R.

Yelp
Good coffee and cute new spot I got a lavender vanilla almond milk latte. Great coffee flavor however they did add a little too much syrup. Beyond that I think this is a great up and coming coffee shop. They had CBD infused mocha which is worth trying and some funny little sayings on their coffee bean bags. Check it out if you're looking for somewhere new and simple and cute.
google avatar

Abby W.

Yelp
I have been searching for new coffee spots to try out as there are always fresh things popping up in the city. This one has me really excited! The location is great, the coffee is even better. It is in a neighborhood ripe with exploring opportunities. Grab a delicious, deep cup of water of grounds and take a walk. Or stay and study. What I love about this place is that you could come with friends or stop and work for a while. It works for everything. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be coming back frequently!
google avatar

Kelvin Y.

Yelp
Push X Pull was next door to Danwei Canting where we just had lunch. Located in SE PDX. We decided to try Push X Pull since we needed a coffee picker upper and finding a good Coffee shop and knowing where they are can come in handy (for future reference). Bright, simply decorated very pleasant Coffee shop. I had the Cortado. The Cortado had strong Coffee flavor with very pleasant floral notes. One of the best Cortados I've had. Push X Pull has an oversized leather sofa to relax and many spaces to get work done. From Coffee Wiki: Cortado (from the Spanish cortar, known as "Tallat" in Catalan, "Pingo" or "Garoto" in Portugal and "noisette" in France) is an espresso "cut" with a small amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. The ratio of coffee to milk is between 1:1 - 1:2, and the milk is added after the espresso.
google avatar

Charlie P.

Yelp
Push X Pull has some of the best espresso in the city. The variety of the beans, the roasting methods, their sourcing; everything is fantastic. I'm an especially big fan of their beans from Bali. They seriously can't be beat. I have gone to many coffee houses in Portland: Ristretto Roasters, 40 Lbs, Good Coffee, Jet Set, Barista, and many more. While they are all good places, Push X Pull goes above and beyond. You can tell how much effort is put into the product by the owner (who's a great guy) and his wonderful staff. I can't say enough good things about Push X Pull, and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantastic espresso!
google avatar

Urvashi G.

Yelp
I found about this place through a blogger's review. Though I do believe it was a pretty instagrammy spot and had chill vibes but I don't think the coffee was that outstanding. I ordered a cafe latte with almond milk. The staff was nice and friendly. The coffee was alright. The place has great ambience and probably good for a chill hangout spot!
google avatar

Daniel M.

Yelp
5 stars because they offer something new and different to the Portland coffee scene -- high-end micro roaster offering an array of unusual coffees that span the processing spectrum, but mostly non-washed. I walked out with a natural processed coffee from Bali. 5 stars because the employees were welcoming, knowledgeable and excited to share their company story, especially Emma. Deduct a star because it was 36 degrees outside and 37 degrees inside. I kept my winter hat and coat on for the 90 minutes I sipped dripped coffees. Also not 5 stars because neither of my coffees were spectacular. Relatively unique and clearly made with care, but my drip cups were just okay. ... Pretty quiet start on a Saturday morning, owing mostly to the neighborhood. I was able to get some work done with little interruption. If the bag coffee I bought is stellar, I'll bump this up to a 5. Be back later. Update: 5 stars because this business is providing information about what coffee can be (if atypical avenues are explored) to the Portland coffee community, which just has a ton of value. Update #2: Bag of Bali was interesting at times, but ultimately something I gave away to a friend. It was clean and light, tasting almost like a washed coffee. The description -- roasted strawberries and cocoa -- was good, but the fragrance was musty and funky .... and the natural processing stews sweetness was just not something I could want more than a few times. So, i have yet to have great coffee from this place .. so, 4 stars.

Winzlow S.

Yelp
Push X Pull is my current favorite coffee in Portland. The consistently and quality is really good. The staff is friendly and unpretentious. The clientele has the Nuevo PDX young professional tech feel but no points docked for that. The space is light and airy, a good place to get work done or relax. Grab the leather couch if you can. Only downside is the bathroom is right by the counter. Overall my current favorite coffee spot in Portland tho, by far...

Simran K.

Yelp
WOW if this coffee shop doesn't scream Portland not sure what does. I love coming here and the customer service is amazing-everyone is extremely friendly. You can strike up a conversation about where the coffee is from and what you really want to drink that day. I love their americanos and shot of espressos with some topo Chico on the side
google avatar

Kyle G.

Yelp
Their coffee is phenomenal and it's a very cute shop. It's the exact kind of place you wanna live next to and visit everyday. If my life were a sitcom this would be my location. The crew is great and they serve great coffee and food. Definitely a gem.
google avatar

Matt E.

Yelp
You know what this place has? Vibes for days. By this point in Portland, most any coffee shop is going to be able to pour a quality shot. They definitely do that here at Push X Pull, and they get bonus points for roasting their own beans from right inside the shop. Every coffee drink I've had here has been awfully good, though I'm somewhat cranky that their only non-dairy alternative is oat milk. I'm an almond milk guy and don't like how many carbs are in oat milk. Then again, I totally destroyed a pizza last night, so maybe I shouldn't be such a raging hypocrite? I digress... So how's a coffee shop to differentiate themselves? For me it's all about the atmosphere, which Push X Pull has for days. I live for this open and airy shop. The blonde wood and turquoise accents are modern and different than anything I've seen in a Portland coffee shop. That plus the massive walls of windows make this a really lovely environment in which to spend some time. Oh, and they're currently playing Chance the Rapper, so I'm feeling pretty good about the music vibes, too. This place has been open for a minute and somehow only has 6 reviews? I feel like maybe Push X Pull is still under the radar. Hopefully not TOO under the radar, however. This little corner of PDX is all that much better because of their presence.
google avatar

Ashley K.

Yelp
This coffee shop is cool - for so many reasons! I love natural light and not enough coffee shops have big windows for us to enjoy the sun (while we have it). It's bright and brightly colored inside (not sure why the color turquoise just makes me smile) and the music is always on point. The espresso is GOOD. The staff is always super nice too and seating is very often available. They have standard coffee shop options - lattes, cappuccinos, etc. matchas & chais but they also now have a CBD Mocha (by Gron) - very neat. I've also never had a problem with the WiFi here which is a huge plus for a work-from-home person like me! Thank you Push X Pull.
google avatar

Dmitriy K.

Yelp
Quality of service and drinks (didn't try food) suck. Would not recommend especially given other options around.
google avatar

Brian C.

Yelp
I'm so sad this isn't my neighborhood coffee shop. I had the best espresso of my life here last Sunday. They offered more than one single origin coffee in espresso form, which is super awesome, the texture was so luxurious, and every little detail was nailed. Also, the staff was super friendly and welcoming. Coffee nerds check them out! These folks know what they're doing and take pride in their craft.

This place is THE BOMB! The owner is often there roasting beans or sampling fresh espresso as you order. You can tell he is very committed to creating stellar coffee! The staff is always friendly and the coffee is damn near perfect!

Yelp
One of our stops on our latest coffee crawl. Great atmosphere, great light, great colour palette, and most importantly: GREAT COFFEE. Loved meeting Chris and smelling the coffee roasting as we sipped on a Costa Rica as an espresso and a cortado. They're the real deal, check them out and give them some love! Bonus: Their merch is on point. Another Bonus: All of their cute plants are alive and have names!!

Yelp
This is my first time in Portland and definitely wanted to visit a neat coffee shop. Push X Pull has great coffee, awesome customer service and the set up is super cute! I would recommend it to everyone!
