Vegan Sports Bar Opens in Closed Hinterhof Space in Highland Park Soon - Eater LA

"The Hinterhof space in Highland Park isn’t staying closed for long. The all-vegan German beer garden with the wide open patio will instead turn into an all-vegan sports bar this month, operating under the name Put Me In Coach. The restaurant is the latest project by Jason Eisner from nearby Block Party, and his partners Josh Beane, Janelle Hu, and Brennan Woo from Party Beer Co. in West Adams, among others. Per Eisner, the new Put Me In Coach will carry the usual array of Dodger, Lakers, and LAFC games, as well as replays of vintage sporting events and sports movies. As for the food served on the wide patio and inside, expect everything from vegan Mexican food — the restaurant is being helmed by chef Richard Chang of Wolfie’s and formerly the Tacos La Tehuanita food truck — to Korean dishes, staple sports bar food like faux meat wings, pizzas, and more. A full opening is expected on June 15." - Farley Elliott

Had a great time here and got to try a bunch of stuff on the menu, all at a very affordable price point. We tried the wings, nachos, pretzel and onion rings. Everything was good and I will definitely be back, but I do hope they will make a few changes as they grow. I wish the wings were not just frozen chicken nuggets, I would expect a house made vegan wing from an all-vegan restaurant. There are so many great wing flavor options, but even if you buy 14 wings, you have to go with all one flavor. It would be better if we could split half and half in order to try 2 flavors. The pretzels came with cheese sauce, but it was just a gummy melted vegan cheese. I was hoping for either a good German mustard or something more like the beer cheese sauce they had at hinterhof. I will say everything else was great and would love to come back and hope that they will accept feedback and make a few changes. We also had a blast watching the various sports channels, especially the channel that was playing odd sports like hobby horse and bowling! So fun!

Opening in the old Hinterhof vegan German food space on York, Put Me In Coach keeps things meatless as a 100% plant-based sports bar concept, although you wouldn't know it by the looks of the entrees. The simple menu consists of the typical fare you'd find at most local sports bars: your tacos, burgers, wings, onion rings, etc. However, there are also L.A.-specific options like the Korean bibimbap and the Chinese orange chicken. The bulk of the beers are brewed by West Adams-based Party Beer Co. Their Hazy IPA is tasty, refreshing, and a great accompaniment to your meal. The cheeseburger, although advertised as a "smashy" patty, is quite thick, flavorful and juicy. An innovation I enjoyed on it was the extra-toasted, quite solid bottom bun slice. Clearly meant to prevent the "soggy bun" that often occurs with burgers, it both adds an extra crunchiness to the burger and shows consideration to the experience of the diner. In short, it really shows that they care. The onion rings (Burger King-style with minced onion and not onion slices) that came along with the burger were fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside, gently seasoned, and somewhat addictive. I ordered a second separate helping, which I enjoyed. The tacos are an elevated version of the Taco Bell yellow corn hard-shell variety, although since they're plant-based, the "meat" bears resemblance in taste to the soy/meat stuffing used in Jack In The Box-style tacos (not a criticism-JITB tacos are a guilty pleasure of mine). Everything about these tacos are better than your average fast-food taco, as the shells are fresh and more substantial, and topped with tasty grated vegan cheddar, lettuce, and fresh pico de gallo. Our server, Amelia, was polite, helpful, and fast. The rear outdoor area was like a big picnic party with about a dozen flatscreen TVs showing the sports event of the moment. At the end of our dinner, I was full but not close to bursting. This place is off to a good start. Even if you're an avowed carnivore, try this place and you won't miss the meat. Recommended!

Great new spot! The terrace was so spacious with enough TVs to watch anything you would like. Nice selection of drinks and 100% plant based food. My friend is gluten free and it was so nice that menu had indication of all the GF items on it. We got the nachos, corn and the wings which were all great. The wings have a big selection of sauce choices and if you order the largest portion of twenty one wings you can pick two sauce choices, the wings also came with a good amount of fries! Looking forward to trying all the other great food they have. Really nice laid back spot!

I recently visited this location as my company hosted our holiday party here and everything from the food, to the venue, to the service was amazing. I loved that all of the food options were plant based, this made it easy for us to accommodate different types of food allergies. We have plenty of meat eaters as well who raved about the food and not being able to tell the difference. The venue offered great indoor and outdoor space and the staff was incredible. If you are in the Glendale or Los Angeles area and looking for a quick bite, drink, or vegan meal, I would definitely recommend Put Me In Coach.

Great vegan food.I had a taco salad it was fresh and tasted yummy.Pleasant atmosphere. Dog friendly. Plenty of seating upon entering, or outside on patio. Service was fantastic. Plenty of televisions located on outside patio that are placed high up on the wall making it easy to view. Definitely will return.

Food was pretty good for a vegan option (and I’m not vegan, my friends are). BUT ambience and service were below average even though there were 8 employees (and I’m not exaggerating) working and only 6 tables in the restaurant. Used to love the Biergarten that was here before and I love sports bars, but I was really disappointed by Put Me In Coach and Josh the manager who was sitting with his friends at the table across from us. Absolutely wild….

I hate giving restaurants that have made the bold choice to support veganism bad reviews but this is a rare instance where some tough love is needed. We tried the pretzel, corn dog, Buffalo wings, and a taco. The pretzel was, fine, and very large but the mustard it was served with was just plain old yellow. The corn dog was a mystery because although being fairly large and the corn shell tasting decent the dog in the middle was practically flavorless. The Buffalo wings were the biggest let down. Besides offering like ten different choices for sauce to toss them in, you were only allowed to pick one for every 7 'wings' that cost $9. But to top it off when they came out they were just nuggets breaded and fried, nothing wings about them. And since other restaurants have found ways to offer actual veganized 'wings' I expected this one to do the same if they called them that. Lastly the taco. Again it was a perplexing entry since it had all the fixings to be delicious but somehow ended up with little complexity and mainly a blandness. My girlfriend said it reminded her of taco bell, but I said at least taco bell would've seasoned it better. We hope they do better and we hope they survive, losing Hinterholf from that same location was a huge hurt but the current replacement just isn't it, yet.

Honestly if I could give this place 0 stars I would. This place looked cool on the outside so I went in with high hopes, but when they didn’t have the hometown game (la galaxy) on at a sports bar with “15 TVs” I knew something was fishy. Then I read the menu… nowhere on the signage and design was it listed the place was vegan, in fact they advertised “burgers and wings” so to be met with only vegan food was a bit of a slap in the face. Also, they didn’t have pbr, high life, or any cheap brews which is the staple of the sports bar experience. If I was running this place, I’d honestly be ashamed to call it a sports bar. Maybe a vegan hangout sports themed pub at best, but compared to even the tackiest of Buffalo Wild Wings, this place is terrible.
