Putnam Pantry Candies, Ice Creams & Cafe

Was told by a worker at Rebecca Nurse's House that this was the place to check out. Boy were we glad she told us. Beautiful outside and delicious inside. The sandwich was delicious, the broccoli salad was great add a pickle and it's lunch. All the candies are excellent at tempting my friend and I. We fell into temptation, chocolate and so much more!! Ice cream was available also but I got full on lunch .

Putnam Pantry in Danvers, Massachusetts, has been a North Shore favorite since 1951. Ice cream was watery. Flavor was meh, it had ice chips in it. Brownie was okay. Nice patio area. 3/5.

It's so fun to go! Automatically takes u back to being a kid again, so many things to look at, and the candy is so beautifully wrapped. Candy of all kinds. There are so many yummy treats for everyone's taste buds! I, dear, u to go there and try walking out empty handed🤣 I bet u won't!

Great little gem. Fun " smorgasbord " ice cream topping bar for ice cream. Everything homemade ( fudges, whipped cream, marshmallow topping, caramel cherry sauce)... Regular hot fudge was soo yummy. Great sandwiches and sides also. Nice little stop for homemade chocolates along w a bites to eat. Don't forget the ice cream smorgasbord ! 👌👍

I’ve been going to Putnam Pantry for about 60 years. For the past few months my family and I have been meeting there every other weekend. On Sunday I bought a piece of carrot cake. As we were all sitting there we saw a mouse run across the floor and up the back of the soda machine. I brought my cake up to the counter for a refund as it no longer appealed to me. I was told you can’t return food. It was in an unopened container. I called the manager the following day. She said I needed my receipt which got thrown away when we had cleared off our table. I understand these things happen. It wasn’t about the money per se but more about customer service. They didn’t have to take the cake back. I felt I should have been compensated in some way. Needless to say, I won’t be going back anytime soon.

Ice cream and chocolate and candy oh my! Add in a sandwich and patio seating and you’ve got it all! No where else have I seen an ice cream smorgasbord! Handmade chocolates, candy galore and a decent selection of big and yummy sandwiches, pizza and sides like broccoli salad. All within a charming setting in a family owned business dating back to the early 1950s. Sit indoors or out and enjoy the deliciousness and nostalgia.

Beautiful Store with endless choices of candy, ice cream and other foods. One could spend a long time here, and that is a good thing. We stopped on our way back to Jersey from Rockport Massachusetts. Well worth the stop if you are in area, all chocolate is made in house and are extremely good. You will not be disabled in the least. A definite must in my opinion. The store is quite larger than it appears from the outside and the staff is extremely friendly, which is always a plus in my opinion. You feel very welcome from the moment you walk in the door.

Terrible, for the money they charge they hardly give you any ice cream, rip off, wait in line at Richardsons at least you get what you pay for. Manage is useless.

Their sandwiches are the best. I only had half because I wanted to save room for ice cream. They're ice cream is heavenly and the sundae bar so exciting. Lots of choices too. Their store is amazing! I don't think I've ever seen such beautiful chocolates and the assortment is just crazy. Everything is made right there. I can't wait to go back next month. You've got to go!

I have long brought my children and family members to Putnam Pantry for ice cream and birthday parties. They never dissapoint. Now they serve scrumptous sandwiches, sides and soups. This is a greT spot for you g and old alike

My favorite place to go for lunch near my work. The sandwiches are delicious and have a variety of homemade sides like broccoli salad, potato salad, and pasta salad. My go-to order is the Mayflower sandwich with broccoli salad. I haven't tried the ice cream or chocolate but definitely would like to eventually. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating if you want to dine in. The employees are friendly. The location is a little odd (Route 1 north) but it's easy to find. Highly recommended whether you're looking for a meal or dessert. Something for everyone here!

Stopped for Valentines chocolate and stayed for lunch. A fine selection of of sandwiches that come with a choice of sides. We solit and Italian sub which was served on slightly toasted/warmed roll. All ingredients were fresh and surpassed local sub shops. Employees are friendly and ambience with fireplace is pleasant and relaxing. Still has ice cream smorgasbord if you're looking for dessert. A comfortable place to keep in mind for a simple lunch. Highly recommend

What can I say, other than every holiday I come here to get the best gingerbread houses. As soon as you walk in you smell sugary goodness! Then the cinnamon rolls hit you and then chocolate. Talk about being in Willy wonkas chocolate factory. Seriously they have everything, if you want lunch they have that too. I've only purchased their ginger bread and Easter baskets which are both phenomenal and pack a lot of value. I would highly recommend!

Stopped at Putnam Pantry for their amazing homemade butterscotch topping but instead, they were serving a caramel-flavored version. People who love butterscotch can tell the difference. Why did they change it? Hope it's only temporary.

I just had the best ice cream sundae here! The assortment of candies here is unbelievable!!! Also they have a nice cafe! Definitely will be back for sandwiches and coffee!! Really quaint inside, super historical!

Really enjoyed visiting this cute little country place. We only came for the candy but will come back to try their additional items another day.

We went a couple weeks ago and it was such a throw back to when I was little. The ice cream sundae bar was just as I remembered and my daughter and her friend thought it was great. Wildly awesome variety of candies and baked goods too.

Do a Yelp Check in & you'll get a $1 off any size Sundae. The place is located in Danvers MA outside of Boston. The shop is divided into 2 sections Candy & Ice Cream. Putnam Pantry has an old fashioned ice cream parlour. They have a Giant Blackboard Menu with all the Ice Cream Flavors listed. You load up your dish with your favorite ice cream & as many toppings as you want. Before Covid you could doit yourself after Covid they are putting on whatever toppings you want on your ice cream. So Load it up Baby it's all included in your price. The Ice Cream is Good but the Piling up of the Toppings is the Stand Out Here. You've got to Scope Out the whole place. The shop is Full of old fashioned Antique Furnishings of Candy & Ice Cream Nostalgia. They have a Fireplace & wooden tables, chairs & ice cream parlour chairs too They have a whole section of Retro Candy Bars from Back in the Day. Then they have their home made chocolates. We tried the chocolates & thought it was a Mixed Bag some we're Ok others were Good & others we didn't like at all. Skip the chocolates & go for what they are Famous for - The Fudge. It is Excellent. We couldn't understand why the chocolates are just OK but the Fudge is on a whole another level & it is SO TASTYYYYYYY! It wasn't just my opinion because there was very little left of the various kinds of Fudge but lots of Candy. They have lots of Themed Candy here for various Holidays like Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Halloween etc. Putnam Pantry is a Fun Place to come & a Blast from the Past to have some Dessert Treats! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Great place to grab breakfast or lunch! I got an ice coffee, and a bacon, egg, cheddar and avocado breakfast sandwich! Both were amazing. It's a really cozy and relaxing environment, 10/10 recommend!

Can't believe I've lived in Andover since 1983 and have never been here. The adventure began with the aroma of chocolate when you walk in - amazing. I did a quick jog through the candy store and vowed to take my granddaughters here during their next visit. Next ordered lunch: chicken BLT which was so fresh. Bacon was crispy and they remembered to not add guacamole. Next came the sundae: their list in-house of flavors that are made on site doesn't match the online list (butter crunch ) but the substituted butter pecan was delicious. My only complaint of the day was that the rich, flavorful butterscotch sauce was room temp and not at all heated. All staff were friendly and attentive. Everything felt nostalgic which was so nice. I'll be back.

With the combo of Valentine's Day & early Super Bowl Sunday, I thought it would be fun for a group of us to get together and show creativity making our own sundaes. I added an anonymous Valentine swap ... So braving the snow, 7 of us got together at this wonderful place. Entering, your mood goes into happy overdrive from the array of sweetness in the air. It's a combo of way too many sweets to add to my review... But with Valentine's Day chocolate was #1. And they have LOTS of it showcased. We found a long 5able by the fireplace and then proceeded to the ice cream area. There is a menu board above with the listing of flavors. Below fake scoops in sundae dishes depicting their actual sizes which was kind of cute. Once you choose your flavor & size scoops you wait while someone behind a screen scoops it out. You pay and then proceed along the toppings bar. Pretty simple and also quite amazing. .. for mine I chose the traditional route : vanilla, chocolate &: Strawberry with mostly all basic toppings. My friends went with all sorts of combos and sizes. We had so much fun creating.. went back to our table and savored them. Each of us had earlier added our Valentine's to a large shiny red bag I'd brought.. I shook the bag and passed it down. One by one they pulled out a card. Some had gone all out adding a rose, chocolate etc to their cards - others were crafty, home-made. It was a fun way for each of us to get a Valentine's Day card! In all the years I've lived on or near the North Shore yesterday was my 1st time at Putnam pantry & it will definitely not be my last!

ICE CREAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish they had Peanut Butter sauce, my only gripe... This place is the coolest place for kids... Ice Cream bar with TONS of toppings, Great Candy selection (old candies too)... and always make sure to check the pamphlets on the way out - they usually have good coupons on them... OOHH WAIT, One gripe!! Hate the little paper plate they give you for under the ice cream, Cmon Putnam Pantry, the whole idea is to pile on toppings, well the tiny bowl & tiny plate make for items spilling everywhere... But thats prolly why there is someone standing there at all times with rag to catch drippings... But Bigger bowls... I dont need more ice cream, just more room for toppings!

Great breakfast sandwiches here. Do yourself a favor and get one. And my daughter loves the chocolate band-aids. Cures all her boo-boo's!

My first job ever was a "Candy Girl"...Loved this job! As time went on, I worked both stores, handled the mail orders, and work downstairs where the candy was made. My great, great, great, great grandfather was Gen. Putnam, so it was a fitting place for me to work. Susan Chartier Schooley

This place is a shell of its former self. It's just severely outdated and I think they still get most Of their business due to nostalgia reasons. We stopped by and got a hot fudge sundae, and it was probably the worst sundae I have had in a long time. It stinks too because we went here as children and I wanted to have my son experience the same feeling. We drove up to the place and they have a Gadsen "don't tread on me" flag flying. Now I get why some people might put this up for the historical aspect of the flag, but as of right now, that flag has a much different meaning.. due to the current political landscape. Even though I do not agree with what the flag is currently being used for with the far right, we went in anyway and tried the ice cream. Very very sub par. All these factors led me To the decision of not returning here.

Ice cream, candy, nostalgia, service there's nothing here that they don't do awesomely. You are definitely missing out if you don't try them

My experience was awful because of the ignorant older white overweight woman with glasses that worked there! I brought my two nephews and also my husband and sister n law an ice cream to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ today. She came over to us like she was out of breath and like a crazy woman. She said that she was upset with us having a joking comment with one her employees. She made us feel so uncomfortable and made us leave, just for having a joke. After we were only joking and just paid for our ice creams. I've been coming here for over 20 years and I will never return ever again. Can't believe that lady and how she handled this. I'm so upset! There was no profanity spoken at all. That's how a person can be lied on. We had children with us and we would not talk like that with children. This place needs to be closed down. I'd actually be scared to go there ever again not knowing what lies these people can make on someone. It's awful and I'll make sure everyone knows about what happened. Very awful and not a bit family friendly. I'd never step foot in this place ever again. All my sister said was to the boy, winking her eye was you want a brother! Because her son wasn't listening, jokingly to that boy who worked there. Nothing else. And she was smiling to him as she said it. Disgusting how people can change things around. They both need to be fired. That old lady and that young boy. Obviously they don't belong in an environment where there is other people!

I used to come here when I was a kid.... I took my kids here recently. We got a 2 ice cream sodas and a hot fudge sundae. The sodas were so bad, I don't know why. My kids couldn't drink them. I took a sip from both: horrible. My hot fudge sundae was good. It's still a beautiful place but nothing like it used to be.

One of my family's favorite places to get ice cream. It's definitely different with covid because they are the ones building your sundae, but the staff is friendly and will make things according to your preferences

The ice cream was ok. It's good for kids I'm just not sure what the sanitation level is here. None of the ice cream scoopers where wearing gloves or hair nets and at the bottom of my 2 scoop ice cream sundae I found a disgusting hair. It really made me feel nauseous after I consumed the entire sundae to find a hair. So I won't go back, won't bring the family again, there's more ice cream places around that the kids can try. Sorry Putnam Pantry but the hair in my sundae was disgusting I'm just so thankful I found it before I ate it.

I have never found anything like this place in the world. Wow! Truly amazing! Putnam Pantry better be around for another 200 years or more. I had bday parties here as a kid and grew up coming here and dumping every possible sauce, candy, marshmallow, whipped cream, and nut toppings so that I ended up with some kind of cold goo and it was the best thing in the world to consume and it went so well with ta swig of tap water. Here is what people do not realize. Massachusetts has incredible variety in ice cream. Consider yourself blessed and spoiled. In the hot climate of the Southern states, I figured that there would be numerous ice cream choices..even more so than MA. However, there are hardly any Mom and Pop ice cream joints at all. There is no culture here of going out for ice cream like there was in MA. We mostly get crappy Cold Stone Creamery or some other chain junk. If you say "Frappe," people will look at you like you have 6 heads. Ice cream scarcity truly shocked me when I moved to the South. Mass is full of amazing choices...Putnam...Treadwells...Richardsons..Salem Willows...Chandler's...Brighams...etc...etc. However, we do have very strong drinks..people go out for cold drinks here instead of ice cream ;)

Love there mayflower sandwich there pasta salad was fabulous. Of course alway loved the sundae bar. You couldn't ask for a better place to have lunch with a couple of friends. Thank goodness chocolate isn't one of my favorite candies or I would be in trouble. The smell is divine.

I've been visiting Putnam Pantry since I was a child having my birthdays there! I raised my kids to know how special the place is also! Newly renovated and offering cafe foods in addition to there handmade candies and famous ice cream toppings bar, this location has kept its nostalgic appeal with updated flare!

This place is Magical! It feels like you are stepping back into the 50's into an old time ice cream shop and candy store! When we first walked in you get the most incredible smells of chocolate! We ordered the medium Sunday's from the counter, two hefty scoops of any of their amazing flavors served in a silver dish! Then the toppings bar... oh the toppings bar! They have homemade hot fudge, hot Caramel and hot butter brown sugar sauce, then you move along to the homemade whipped cream and homemade marshmallow topping followed by something I have never heard of but absolutely loved.. the Cherry Caramel sauce, still not exactly sure what it was, but it was delicious! If you are in the area go check this place out, you will not be disappointed! I can't wait to come back and try some new flavors, as well as some of the homemade chocolates!

I went here as a kid and was really excited to take my daughter. I assumed we could be masked up to pick out our treats and then eat outside. Seeing as the clientele is a lot of people with kids, I was so surprised to see no employees wearing masks, no signage encouraging masks, and then, to boot, a "don't treat on me flag." The treats were good but the failure to take a pandemic seriously at a place kids loved is so incredibly disappointing. Won't be back.

This is a nice little candy and ice cream parlor in a cute little colonial style house. They offer about 18 or so flavors of ice cream and you can either have just the ice cream plain or top your own ice cream at their ice cream smorgasbord. There are about a dozen toppings to pick from including fresh, homemade whipped cream. The candy part of the shop is really nice too (and very easy to get carried away in)! They make their own chocolate and fudge. There is a huge selection of boxed chocolate available in both dark and milk chocolate with various centers: cream, chewy, crispy, caramel, etc. They also sell other types of candy such as hard candies and silver dollar candies. Located on the northbound side of route 1 in Danvers this little shop is definitely well worth the trip.

What a nostalgic feeling, coming back to putnam pantry after all these years. I used to go when I was a kid, now being 22 I was ready to experience all the nostalgia again. When you walk in, it really feels like Willy Wonka/Candy land. Its filled with chocolates, candies, and displays with other sweets. I came here for the ice cream especially, since I remember it being so amazing. When you get in line for ice-cream, there is a cute chalk board filled with flavors, and they have a lot more flavors than I am used to. They even had a display showing how big each serving was, very helpful. Unfortunately, the staff was mostly teenagers, who talked more than helped. When I approached the line, there wasn't anyone on register, and it wasn't for a few minutes did someone notice me. Also she didn't help explain any of the stranger flavors hey had. I grabbed a junior sized smores ice-cream and holy goodness, it was so sweet. I almost didn't need toppings, but that didn't stop me (side note, it was a little over 5 dollars for a tiny cup, kinda expensive). Now came the fun part, the toppings. I was a tad underwhelmed with how little the choices were for toppings. Maybe they have always had only sauces and whipped cream and a few crumbled cookies, but I felt a little ripped off. I grabbed hot fudge, the homemade whipped cream and oreo cookie. I actually couldn't finish the ice cream because it was a lot and very sweet. I was hoping they had some fresh fruit topping to balance the sugar. Also, they had small cups for water, but it was frustrating to get up and down for a mouthful of water. I'm the type of person who gets thirsty from ice-cream, so the small cups just weren't cutting it. Overall its great for a nostalgic feeling, but not for the price/quality.

Nostalgic! I used to come here as a kid. For the 1st time in about 20 years (wow, I sound old), I brought my family....after 2 years of saying "let's go to Putnam Pantry". Upon walking in, you can smell the chocolates, one of my favorite smells. There is a small candy shop, the ice cream area and an area to sit and enjoy your ice cream creation. It took us a minute to figure out how everything worked. If you're going for the ice cream bar, upon walking in, you go to the right side of the store to order and pay for your ice cream first then add all of your toppings. Nothing is Weighed and the prices are inexpensive. You do not get a huge amount of ice cream, I believe one scoop for a small which cost about five dollars. (I'm writing this review a few weeks after going there). I say five dollars is inexpensive because you can add as many toppings as you want. They do not have the same amount compared to the yogurt places. This is an old-fashioned do it yourself ice cream place. They have caramel sauce, strawberry sauce, chocolate sauce, hot fudge, Marshmallow sauces (no peanut butter or at least while I was there) and about six or seven other toppings. I am an ice cream snob and was not a huge fan of the ice cream. Everyone else I was with loved it.....5 others. They offer birthday parties which is pretty cool Sands Young and all the kids really love being able to add whatever they want to their ice cream. As a parent, I love it because I'm not paying $20 for this ice cream.

Highly highly recommend their thanksgiving sandwich, it is one of the best I've ever had! Always Friendly service a great experience every time we stop in. The candy is also out of this world, a bit pricy for what it is but I'd much rather support a local small business! Plus the ice cream sundae bar is and always has been great, you can't go wrong with this place!

Who that grew up in the area doesn't love and have fond memories this place? And now they have great sandwiches too! Their ice cream smorgasboard is yummy. They make wonderful candies and fudge. Just be prepared, you'll put on the weight from the smell!

I've been here before and had the fudge and candies which were very good. This review is based on that visit and Sunday's visit for ice cream. From being in here and reading about this place I guess it's kind of an institution it's been around for many years not sure exactly but it has that old school charm to it. They a section for fudge and chocolate and candies of every kind imaginable and all the stuff I tried were delicious. This visit my wife and I were in the mood for an ice cream and decided to give it a try. We weren't disappointed we both got banana splits which were 3 scoops of ice cream and they had loads of selections obviously a banana and then my favorite part is they have a toppings bar that you can put your own stuff on and here they also have ton of toppings I put hot fudge homemade whipped cream and melted marshmallow. My only complaint is the area where you order ice cream and wait for it before you put toppings on is kind of small and gets a bit tight when crowded other than that we enjoyed it

I hardly ever award 5 stars, but there is no possible way that Putnam Pantry can have any other rating. I have been going here since I was a boy, and not a single thing has changed. For those of you that have never visited, Putnam Pantry is a place where childhood dreams come true. You select your size and flavor of ice cream, and then you build your own sundaes using a smorgasbord of delicious ingredients like hot fudge and crushed oreos. And don't forget the penuche. When you're finished, you can take a stroll through the candy shop and purchase some delicious fudge or other treats- all made onsite. All of this is set within an absolutely beautifully maintained historic building that has a very interesting story attached to it. Stop in some time, you won't be disappointed.

Yes, you read this correctly -- it's an ice cream sundae smorgasboard! I imagine it's how you teach little kids to do buffets. (At least it was for me and the rest of the kiddos in the area.) First you learn on an ice cream buffet. If you are a plain vanilla person, you will hate this place. But if you'd like to concoct the best sundae ever with all of your favorite toppings, then this is the place for you! If you haven't been, you should go because it's fun. It's fun AND historical.

This place is a dream come true! Every kind of home made candy you could ever desire. The best part about this place is the ice cream sundaes. You build it yourself and there is a ginormous selection of toppings to make your ooey gooey delicious ice cream creation. Tummy is rumbling just thinking about it!!! If you have not been to this place, you're definitely missing out bigtime!

Really good shakes. You get to choose what ice cream you want in it and boy do they have a variety. Of course I was stuck between 2 flavors and the lady taking my order says, "you can have both in your shake". Why thank you miss. I think I will. My co-workers enjoyed their shakes as well. Oh and if you love candy the selection is crazy. I didn't bother with any, my shake was enough but if you are a sweets lover I'm sure they'll have something you love. Your kids will love this place.

Delicious! I used to love coming here as a kid. The sundae's are make your own with a ton of toppings to choose from. They also sell an assortment of packaged candy which I've never tried. Cheap, great for a sundae but not a huge selection of ice cream choices.

I would give this place one star, but I am giving it two stars for nostalgia. The building is old and you can tell they haven't changed a thing inside. Other than that I thought the establishment was dirty and could use an upgrade. It really made me sad that the upkeep has been so horrible. Yes, the ice cream and toppings buffet are super cool, but the place is so run down. FYI- no changing table and the restrooms are down in the gross basement. Also, the service was unenthusiastic. Just a bunch of teens who could care less about their job.

Candy? Make Your Own Sundaes? Historical Site? Putnam Pantry is legendary for, amongst other things, all the great childhood memories it's provided for people. It's a veritable institution! You can go alone, or in a party, and make your own sundaes as high as they can go. And the toppings bar is huge and full of all kinds of insanely sweet goodness. ;) I mainly hit the candy section. They have so many selections of things clearly labeled and in mini-batches so you don't have spend big bucks on a pound of something. A lot of things are pre-packaged and portioned out so you can grab a few different things quickly and easily. They have a lot of complementary things like roasted cashews and maple syrup sugar candy. You'll also find a nice variety of fudge and large peanut butter eggs. It's a neat little trip and you never know what other special little goodies you might find there on top of the ones that have drawn people there from all over for years... Definitely worth a fun, little party trip even if you're from Boston. ;)
