The Ultimate List of Wonderfully Specific Museums

"Ukrainian Easter eggs, known as “pysanka,” are elaborately decorated folk art items that put American Easter eggs to shame. You might even say they belong in a museum, which makes it convenient that there is finally a museum devoted just to them.  Pysanka decorating is one of the most interesting expressions of Ukrainian folk art. This tradition is very old and its beginnings reach back to antiquity, when in attempting to understand creation, ancient people developed myths that the egg was perceived as the source of life, the sun, and the universe. The more modern practice is still done using a system of wax decoration and dyes that produce almost impossibly intricate patterns and designs on the surface of the egg.  The eggcellent museum, which is fronted with a giant pysanka, in which a portion of the collection is held, boasts a collection of over 10,000 pysanky, some of them dating back over 100 years. Some are hung decoratively while others are under glass, but all of them are beautifully intricate. While most of the eggs have a folk design of some sort, others are adorned with domed churches." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Very interesting museum where you can see a lot of different sets of Ukrainian Easter Eggs. The guide explains everything very detailed and with enthusiasm. Great experience either for groups or individually. After seeing the museum you can buy Ukrainian Easter Eggs in its souvenir shop, which by the way are super beautiful. Strongly recommended.

Good morning World! Good morning Ukraine! A lovely city to visit with an incredible museum. The Pysanka Museum in Kolomyia, western Ukraine. The museum possesses a collection of over 10,000 pysanky. The permanent collection includes pysanky from the majority of the oblasts of Ukraine. Many are modern re-creations of traditional designs, but there is also a fine collection of older pysanky from Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast that date back to the 19th and 20th centuries.

My “4” might be a tad harsh but mainly because they have no English information. As a budding tourist destination, they need at least some English signage. (They should get a US Peace Corps Volunteer and they can help do this for them!) Otherwise, I enjoyed it. The exterior of course you must see to believe. Inside you get a real sense of all the intricate detail and different designs that contribute to making pysanky. They even have a small ethnographic part where you learn a bit about traditional clothing (English translation provided here) and a small interior village house scene. You finish with a small gift shop literally under the stairs. They offer some inexpensive replica eggs that make nice gifts and easily transported. If in Kolomyya (or near for some reason) I recommend a visit. Touring it takes no more than an hour. Enjoy!
