Qin Yuan Chun (Central)

"Run by fourth-generation owners, this 70-plus-year-old family business is usually full of regulars. The dining room is plainly furnished, but customers don’t come for the ambiance, but the authentic Jiangzhe classics such as pork trotter aspic, drunken chicken and stir-fried swamp eel. Steamed-to-order xiao long bao boast thin, translucent skin and soupy pork filling. The take-out counter offers quick service for those on the go." - Michelin Inspector

Before seating we were warned with minimum spending of $600 NTD per person and the maximum dining time of 90 minutes, it sounded like to me "we serve only deep pocketed and they are keeping coming". The river shrimps were sweet and delicious, the portions were tiny, a handful of shrimps in a side dish plate. The eel was flavorful, again the portions were tiny, less than one third were eel, the ingredients in the plate were too chewy. The stir fried water snowflakes were past prime, too chewy. The rice was very good. Service was fine.

We had dinner here when we stayed in Taichung for one night. We didn’t make a booking but they were able to fit us in. Great service and well-prepared and delicious food. The main store is currently being refurbished but they have moved the restaurant next door temporarily. Booking is recommended and don’t forget to bring enough cash when you dine in.

Food was delicious, however they have minimum spending per pax and that includes toddler which may cause you to over order. We ordered too much and couldn't finish the food which was quite a waste.

The food here is good, but not fantastic. Some dishes stood out, while others were just average. The braised spare pork ribs were the highlight—tender and flavorful, perfect with rice. The rose buns and layer cake were enjoyable, though the buns might be a bit too rich for one person to finish alone. On the other hand, the egg fried rice with pork chop and pork xiao long bao were just okay—nothing particularly memorable. The pork was tender but lacked fragrance, and the xiao long bao didn’t stand out. With a minimum spend of 600NT per person, it’s best to come with an appetite. Reservations are recommended. Overall, a decent experience, but I wouldn’t rush back.

Superb experience! We couldn’t made reservation via google so we try our luck as we have limited time in Taichung. After understanding our situation, the counter lady allowed us in even though they are closing at 2pm. They served us patiently and recommended their signature dishes ( delicious except the pork rib fried rice where pork rib is soft not our favourite, the sea cucumber is a must-try) and allowed us to enjoy our meal without rushing us. Thumbs up for their great service 👍👍👍

First of all, you need to make a reservation before visiting this place. The food overall is delicious but on the pricier side. The steamed dumplings are particularly noteworthy, with a delicious soup inside. I especially enjoyed the sweet and sour pork, which was very tender. Surprisingly, I also liked the pig kidney; it wasn't too gamey and had a chewy, fresh texture.

Have high expectation of this place. And the best dish, personally, was their chili oil with black bean. :).(had to buy it home cos it was really yum). 2nd best dish was the rib and 3rd was the filling of their red bean bun. I think the problem is there dough made of sourdough that left a bit of raw flour taste, (both for xiao long Bao and bun). Staffs were very nice. And u need to make reservation.
