Google
This is my favorite place to get coffee. They have a great selection. Coffee beans. Fresh juice drinks. Goodies, such as scones, muffins, croissants. Seating inside and out. 2 hour internet access - you have to ask for the code. Friendly staff.

Becky

Google
Recommend the PSL. Quality fresh coffee; a little strong but good.

Aleksandra Szpakowska

Google
We really wanted to like this place since it’s so close to us, but this must have been one of the worst lattes i have ever tasted. The coffee shop smells entirely like fish due to the burned coffee beans and the coffee followed suit. My oat milk latte tasted like the worst black coffee. Also did not appreciate the plastic forks for our pastry — tacky and unsustainable. Atmosphere is quite nice so there is a lot of potential, but maybe switch to juices instead of coffee 😫

Google
Delicious coffee in a dapper environment. They also serve free iced water. There are so many delicious pastries it is difficult to make a choice

Ana Belen

Google
My favorite coffee shop in Bethesda. My favorite thing is the chai but I am a sucker for their fall selection, they are very creative and the staff is incredibly kind.

Tommy Tang

Google
The coffee was ok, glad they are opened and serves and vibe are great here

Jermaine Pow

Google
The coffee was great and the muffin i selections were also very good. The only downside I had was while waiting on my coffee a what seemed to be regular came in, proceeded to hand the male barrister a dog bowl which was on the ground outside for pets, the barrister took the container and proceeded to rinse and fill it in water station where selections are prepared. The patron took what was to be my drink and sipped it, he realized the my Chai was not his coffee. The barrister without changing his gloves started to make my tea, after seeing he was not changing the gloves used to handle the dog bowl I insisted he changed his gloves, he apologized and did so. I am a dog owner also but food and good hygienic practices are very important.

The cucumber lemonade is literally caustic. Please reconsider this drink offering.

Yelp
I went here for a Sunday morning catch-up with a friend. My friend got here at 8:30am and was able to easily snag us a table across the counter. By the time I arrived at 8:45am, the place was packed with every table and bar area seat taken. The place does get crowded early given the prime location. You have arrive early if you want to snag good seats, as the seating is limited. This is probably not the place to come and be productive on your work laptop on a Sunday given how crowded it gets. However, for a catch up with a friend or a coffee to go, this is worth your time. On a Sunday morning, I can see why this is a go-to spot for many folks. The folks at the register were friendly and helpful. I ordered a coffee and almond croissant, and my friend ordered a hot chocolate and chocolate croissant. Our meals and drinks were good. For my coffee, I ordered the house blend which was bitter in a good, not over cooked kind of way. The coffee was not bland yet just bold enough to an early morning energy boost. After reading the recent reviews, I was honestly hesitant to come here. However, the kind cashiers dispelled my apprehensions about the service (no comedians or rude service staff). Granted, I got a house blend coffee with cream, so I can't speak for the quality of the rest of the drinks. I would come here again!

Yelp
The best thing about this place is that it is open very early. The iced latte I got was decent and woke me up. Otherwise there's nothing particularly special about this coffee spot aside from convenience. Just an average spot for coffee and breakfast food items. Not my first choice, not my last. Ot took a bit to be prepared but when I finally received the order, I got decent coffee.

Yelp
As always, they give you a complimentary cup of coffee when you buy beans. Coffee from the first pot of the morning, which means it's been baking for awhile. If I want Charbucks I'll go to Starbucks.

Yelp
I guess I should have looked at reviews before I came in, but we walked by on the way to the yarn store down the street and it smelled really good, and I wanted more coffee, so we came through on the way back. Hubby ordered an iced mocha, I ordered an iced latte. He liked his drink just fine but I was not enamored of mine at all. There wasn't a full body flavor to the coffee, it was just bitter. I enjoy a lot of the indie coffee places around Rockville and Silver Spring but this just wasn't great. I would have preferred Starbucks and I don't usually say that about an indie coffee place. I had much higher expectations based on the smell from outside, so was pretty disappointed. They had a lot of nice looking pastries but I was full from lunch so coffee only. I probably won't go back though, alas.

Yelp
Staff was cordial, but the Kenyan pour-over I ordered was incredibly bitter. Worst I've had in a bit. Either overroasted or overextracted, was very disappointed. Hope this isn't the norm for them. Got through half of it just for the warmth on a snow day, but couldn't bring myself to finish it.

Yelp
It was a bit chaotic at first because people converged on this coffee shop at the same time. A bit surprising given the number of shops that sell coffee & baked treats. I ordered an iced cold brew and double chocolate muffin for my riding partner. The coffee was strong and muffin had a deep chocolate flavor just like he likes it. I had to wait a little while for the Bone Builder (Carrot apple pineapple juice) because it's fresh squeezed. The juice along with the blueberry muffin hit the spot. I knew we would cycle at least 30 miles and this gave me the boost I needed for the Rock Creek Park leg of the ride.

Yelp
This is a solid place for coffe and right next door to bagels, a great pairing. The menu has a wide variety for whatever caffinated beverage one is craving. I had to just test it out with a drip coffee and that was good enough to be willing to try the rest of the menu. If you are in the area and need a quick breakfast, do not miss out on this.

Yelp
The Americanos are spectacular. The food is mostly baked goods and fruit. So if you are looking for a good local alternative to chain coffee shops and cafes this would be the place!

Yelp
The portion sizes are amazing and well worth the price in my opinion; I ordered a yogurt and 24oz Frozen Chai Frappe. The service of the barista & cashier were sassy. The cashier had an attitude and was not welcoming to me when I was reviewing the menu, but I did witness them greet the following customer with a warm welcome. I sat down for a good 20 minutes before asking how long it would take for drink to be completed respectfully only for the barista with the red hair to express that she had called out my drink 3 times with an attitude when I had asked which I didn't have a problem with. I'm a pretty patient person but for my first time at this establishment this was not a good experience. I will be returning because what they have to offer as a restaurant is well worth it in terms of food. Also the interior design of the restaurant is beautiful as well, a great place to sit down and read or get work. I don't know if there's something that's impacting the employees workflow that has made them upset but I hope things get better!

Yelp
Pretty solid place with a nice staff. I've had a mocha, a chai, and a matcha from here, and all were pretty good. I like that their matcha is not sweetened, giving the option to adjust how sweet you'd like it. They also have pastries and such which are pretty good. Honestly it's average overall but the staff give it the extra star because good service makes a person want to come back. They have a loyalty program by name, but it takes quite a while to earn the points. I'll probably be back if I want tea in the area.

Yelp
A good place to grab a coffee when walking around Bethesda Road and the shops. I just wanted a regular coffee so I don't have much to report on their food, lattes or other specialty drinks. Overall a strong cup of coffee but not bitter.

Yelp
For context, I'm an avid coffee drinker, brewer, and have done some part-time barista work at a third-wave coffee shop in the Bay Area in the past. I enjoy brewing my own pourovers at home as well as trying quality standalone coffee shops in every city that I visit, which is why I wanted to give Quartermaine a shot. I ordered a Medium Hot Latte with Oat Milk. The drink came out fast, despite some past reviews saying the wait time between order and pick up was long (they got this going at least). The drink was scalding hot and the beans tasted burnt even through the milk.... It really did not live up to the hype and physical line outside. Perhaps I'm a bit nit-picky because there are quality, third-wave coffee shops on every street corner and block in San Francisco, but I'm surprised they've won best coffee of Bethesda? To top it off, I'm docking off one star entirely because I paid extra for the oat milk, but I'm fairly certain I got regular milk (I'm slightly lactose-intolerant and it tasted off for oat milk). If the burnt beans used to brew the coffee cosmically changed the taste of the milk, I think they should get an award for that.

Yelp
I decided to make a quick run to Quartermaine since they have a walk up window facing the street. I got in line at 5:20PM and there was one customer in front of me who I assumed was having difficulties deciding what to order. Upon closer inspection I realized every time she ordered something she was being told they were out of that certain item. Okay, no biggie. I was just there was for a standard drip coffee with two sugars. My turn finally came around 5:25PM and at this point there were three more customers behind me who had queued up on the sidewalk. Before paying for my order I decided to add hazelnut flavoring to the mix as well. I did the usual COVID thing and stepped back and away from the window so the next person can approach safely. The guy behind me stepped forward and the lady behind the register SHUTS THE WINDOW in front of him and says "we're closed". Even he was confused, asking "why wouldn't you tell us while were standing here in line". He had probably been there for roughly ten minutes. She responded by telling him they close at 5:00PM on Sundays despite letting me order twenty minutes past closing time. Weird. As I waited an eternity for my coffee I sent no minimum than ten people away since they kept walking up to the window. I had to let them know the shop was closed since the girl behind the register disappeared. She did eventually re-emerge to hand me my coffee and gave me the standard "sorry for the wait" line. I grabbed it and took off down the sidewalk towards Bethesda Lane to meet up with my family. Thirty seconds later took one sip and realized my order was 0% correct. I'm not a coffee connoisseur by any means but there was no hazelnut flavoring and definitely no sugar. My guess is someone poured out the coffee into a cup and it was supposed to be mixed with the flavoring and sugar next but since the employee was in the backroom she didn't realize it was incomplete and just grabbed the cup and delivered it to me. At that point I decided to take the loss and just dumped it. Never again.

Yelp
We were in Bethesda this past weekend and decided to grab a coffee on our way back to Baltimore. We were across the street at another shop and decided to grab a coffee from Quartermaine. During COVID, they are operating as a to-go window. There wasn't much space to stand without blocking sidewalk traffic, and it was hard to figure out who was in line to order and who was waiting for their coffee. We got a bit of attitude from someone in line who thought I was trying to cut them, but I thought they had already ordered. Not sure how this could be improved since there is so much sidewalk traffic on Bethesda Row, but it made getting coffee a little bit difficult. The coffee was fine, and they do have an extensive menu. It was a-okay but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here since Bethesda Row is a bit of a hassle. Fine for a coffee if you're in the area!

Yelp
I don't get all the grumpy reviews on here. I got a pour over with Ethiopian beans and it blew me away, best cup of coffee I've ever had.

Ala L.

Yelp
It was my second time I visited this place. The first one was not good but I've thought maybe they had a different batch of coffee. So I gave it a try for one more time. I ordered a light roasted coffee and it was disgusting. I couldn't even finish a small cup. If you like ANY coffee- then it's a good place in a good location.

Rick W.

Yelp
This is a great place. I biked from near NIH got coffee beans for home, got a small complementary coffee, and biked over to Giant to complete my shopping. Good people working this coffee shop !
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee at a fair price I put half and half in mine. They also had a pump out of this honey sweetener which was really good and blended well. Plenty of seating and friendly service. It is conveniently located too!

Yelp
I found best coffee place !! But the service is very slow !! Five people in front of me waiting line make me wait almost 20 mins to get my order !! Please make your service a little bit faster !! Because I love your coffee much better Starbucks !!

Yelp
Fast and friendly service . I ordered my favorite Pacific Chai tea (delicious) and tried the Gluten free carrot cake. It was so good! Perfect addition to my day! Nom nom

Yelp
Coffee is good and normally I get my drink quick. However I feel that the service is lacking, I understand that everyone has off days but the person at the front counter was not pleasant to speak with and kinda seemed to be bringing people down. Mumbling as I was ordering and I could barely hear them. I know this is most likely just a job for them and again maybe they were having an off days but as someone who has worked in customer service/food service that just isn't an excuse to Bring negative energy into the work place. I gave them 4 stars because I do enjoy the coffee and they are quick but removed one for lack of good experience.

Yelp
I have been going to quatermaine and getting the same coffee for almost 3 years and I have never paid $9.75 for a ice coffee. Grace charged me $1 per pump of honey. I asked for 6 pumps and whole milk in my ice coffee and and ITS ALMOST $10. I can get 2 LARGE drinks at Starbucks for that. Moral of this story is that I was profiled by this girl and I do not appreciate that. This very bad for business. I will not be coming here ever again. I will make sure to let everyone know what you guys have done today. THIS IS WRONG
google avatar

Yelp
I was here on a Saturday morning, so they were pretty busy. Baristas were quick and getting through everyone's orders relatively effectively. When I got up to the counter to order, the cashier had walked away and so I was asked by the barista working at the bar what I wanted. She seemed kind of annoyed when I was ordering. I got a double shot americano with sugar free vanilla. Drink was really smooth and I overall liked the flavor of the roast. It was waaaaaaay too sweet. So sweet that when I got home I split the drink in half and diluted it. Something to be mindful of when you order - maybe ask for half the pumps of sweetener if you don't like really sweet drinks. 4 stars because the coffee was good but the baristas weren't friendly and my drink was sweet. I would order again.

Scott E.

Yelp
The co-owner and co-founder is a horrible human being. For over one year I was a loyal congenial customer who befriended the entire establishment. Not once did she exude appreciation for the thousands of dollars that I deeply regret spending in her store. In another instance I as a physician noticed a man with swollen ankles having breathing difficulty problems and drifting out of consciousness. Had I not contacted 911 he may very well have died. She callously asked him to depart the facility exhibiting not one iota of concern for his life-threatening condition. Whatever her financial accolades in the court of public opinion she is ethically and morally bankrupt. Shame on you! Have you no decency? The only verbal interaction that we engaged involved her chastising me for acts of benevolent kindness which is indicative of her character or sincere lack thereof. Starbucks Corporation has gained from her loss and is more than happy to accept my business.

Donna C.

Yelp
Amazing service, the staff is so incredibly friendly and there is such a wide range of coffee and latte options!
google avatar

Toller B.

Yelp
Terrible service, bad time keeping, very rude staff. I will not recommend this place to anybody. save your money guys. I'm not one to leave reviews but this place or the staff need re-evaluation. Absolutely Appalling !!!
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
This is a really great coffee shop in Bethesda row. All the brewed coffees are strong and flavorful. I like getting mochas here, either hot or iced. They have an assortment of bakery items to choose from. The customer service here is on point as well. The seating area is a bit cramped and it usually gets pretty packed, so I usually like to get my coffee and go.
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
Overpriced, snooty, unprofessional. If you are gluten free, lactose intolerant, please pay attention to what they do. Trust me, they don't pay attention for you. Came here one morning and I specifically asked for the muffin was gluten free. They said yes I think so. Ok. I got it anyway against my better judgement. I had cramps and on the toilet within the hour. People think gluten free is a choice diet. No. It's a matter of life and deaths and I'm tired of people not truly understand. As for the drinks, made me vomit.
google avatar

Amit M.

Yelp
Quartermaine's has my favorite coffee in town, and the Bethesda location also has Abey, the fastest barista on the planet. By the time I've finished paying, my drink is sitting on the counter waiting for me.
google avatar

Josh L.

Yelp
You guys serve cake in a nylon wrap. The carrot cake is filled with sugar you can't even taste it. You serve it with plastic silverware. You serve coffee that is made unprofessionally. I don't give low staring easy, I know how hard it is to run a business. But really guys, show some love here
google avatar

Francis P.

Yelp
Disappointed and not coming back!! We Went there few weeks back. I ordered cappuccino, instead of a regular milk I asked for almond milk since I'm a Lactose intolerant. Saw those faces of the baristas, they're laughing at me (as if I'm not aware of the milk that I asked them to use), and said they can't make a froth out of that Milk. Remember this is some sort of awarded coffee shop in Bethesda and refused me for using almond milk for a cappuccino because I think they know better than the customer so I ended up with the regular milk. A soon as I tasted my coffee, went straight to the restroom! what great experience from the best coffee shop!
google avatar

Helen C.

Yelp
0 stars if I could. It took them 15 minutes to make a regular cup of coffee and the staff were unhappy to serve us. One man asked what we were waiting for and when we told him, he simply pointed to the coffee that's sitting at the very corner of their counter. Nobody announced that it was ready and he made it seem like our fault that we didn't notice it immediately!
google avatar

Laurie K.

Yelp
If it's the taste of the coffee that's most important to you, this is the place for you. One exception: at 3:30, it tasted burnt. That would be enough said, but there's more. Enter an old world coffee bistro with a variety of baked goods with high-quality ingredients. During the workday, you might find that the tables are taken by people slowly sipping their coffee with some sort of electronic device. Ah, but in the evening, now that's a different vibe. Busy, but calmer, quieter, with soft jazz. Baristas are friendly and sophisticated. Go for the coffee.
google avatar

Andy S.

Yelp
Good coffee, but the espresso is not cared for very well. Might be good in an espresso drink, but not on it's own. Plus you can never trust a place that serves espresso in a paper cup. Think of it as a better place than Dunkin' but you're still better off with Starbucks if you're into espresso.
google avatar

Abbas B.

Yelp
I got a mocha here and it was incredible smooth! One of the best coffees I have had in a long time. The price is the same as most other coffee places. I haven been here before and ordered some tea. They have a good selection of teas too! I have not tried out any food from here. It is a nice place to sit and drink your coffee but it is pretty crowded over the weekend.

George Y.

Yelp
Just go to starbucks instead.... I love to support small local business but this coffee stand is so poorly executed.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
The coffee has a bitter burnt taste at the end. At about $2 a cup I would expect a higher quality brew. The staff doesn't seem to be that knowledgeable about the different beans either. They also have pretty limited seating. So I would only recommend this place if you really need your coffee fix and are in the area.
google avatar

Laurie K.

Yelp
My reviews have made it clear that Quartermaine is THE best coffee around. Check them out. Just one update: Use two covers for your cup because the cardboard is so thin the heat goes right through to your hand.
google avatar

Joanna Y.

Yelp
I've been drinking Quartermaine coffee for upwards of 10 years. We use Quartermaine beans at work to brew our coffee. It's strong and delicious. No bitterness. However, I've only been going to the local stores for the last 3 years or so. Though I really prefer their coffee over Starbucks, the experience and customer service could be better. A barista will sometimes greet you when taking your order. And they don't take your name. So when your drink is ready, you have to listen for the order. That wouldn't be so difficult if the waiting area wasn't so darn tiny! The space inside is really limited, so if other people are waiting by the pickup table, it's hard to hear. So that's when you shimmy your way in to look at the cup sleeve to see if it was your drink they just called. Sigh. They also charge an extra dollar for almond milk.. which is a bit steep. But all that aside, the coffee really is great. I always recommend Quartermaine to even the snobbiest of coffee snobs, and the coffee never disappoints.
google avatar

Bill K.

Yelp
Most of the folks there can't make a decent ristretto and that's ridiculous. Since then, I bought my own proper burr grinder, espresso machine, etc and needed beans. Got decent beans here which worked well. I've increased the score from 1 Star to 3 stars.
google avatar

Collin M.

Yelp
This place has great coffee!!! That means something coming from a guy like me. I'm very picky about my coffee because I like it black, nothing to alter the flavor. Great muffins as well!! They have a double chocolate muffin that will make your mouth water. The lemon poopie seed muffins are also stellar! But be sure to get there early because they do run out. On the weekends the lines can get long but they do a great job of working through the line quickly. This isn't a place where I'd go to find a spot to work - there is limited seating. It's a good in-and-out spot or, if it's nice out, there are benches along the sidewalk outside. You can enjoy a coffee and muffin in the sun!

Haley C.

Yelp
They have the best iced mocha! The lemon-aid is also amazing (fresh lemons and apples). It is also really nice that they have a walk-up window to order so you don't have to go inside to order. Best coffee around Bethesda.
google avatar

Heena P.

Yelp
A whole lot of confusion from the moment we stepped into this place. The giant menu hanging above the counter, where you would normally think to look, only lists smoothies and juices (I thought this was a coffee roaster), and the menu in front only lists coffee beans. The actual coffee menu is located on the opposite side of where you place an order (genius), directly above people sitting. This makes for an awkward experience as you are unintentionally gawking at people while deciding what to pick. The customer service definitely needs some work. They were nice, but had no clue what they were doing. They didn't know what teas were available (yes, yes, I know it's a coffee roaster, but I was recovering from a cold and needed a cup of tea), and weren't too knowledgeable about the coffee either. I ordered a loose-leaf tea that was bland and full of disappointment. My friend ordered a soy latte and said it was subpar and a little burnt. I don't think we'll be back.
google avatar

Can I.

Yelp
Nice and efficient coffee shop with a large variety of pastries. Quite crowded. Tough to find seating. But the staff is nice, Americano tastes good, and the great to stop for items to go.

Yelp
I was in Bethesda for the weekend and you know I had to seek out a coffee shop. I found this one by just wandering around Saturday morning and seeing people in line out the door. Wow, must be a good one so I got in line with "my people" - those who seek caffeine in the morning. I ordered a vanilla latte, an orange juice and a chocolate muffin and proceeded to grab a chair at the counter along the front window. My latte had a heart in the foam so I already had a crush on this place. Sipped the juice, now I wanted to go steady. Had the muffin, I was looking at rings. Drank my coffee while I contemplated moving in with my new love object. I loved every drop, every morsel. Plus the people watching, oh my, it really doesn't get better than this. It was like watching the red carpet but the competition was for cutest kid! Cutest dog! Most bragging about workout just completed! Then all of that was eclipsed by the Dad who strolled on down the street holding a child still in pajamas with twin girls still in pj's trailing behind. A hush fell over the crowd and I am sure that Mom got like 25 pictures of this transgression texted to her. Fabulous coffee, delicious treats and out of this world people watching, what more could you want? Apparently quite a bit because as I checked in I read some reviews and OUCH, it's a tough crowd there in Bethesda. More than tough, mean! All that jostling for status must make 'em crabby. Don't believe those reviews, the coffee is great here, you can even come on down in your pajamas.

Yelp
There is a strong possibility that you will run into a self-important worker bee in bad Ray-Ban-esque sunglasses pecking away on his Dell laptop at Quartermaine. Will you have to sit really close to him? Probably not, but it won't matter because he'll talk so loudly on his mobile phone that you won't be able to escape the disharmony he creates. As his voice reverberates throughout the entire shop, he'll unconsciously give permission to the guy in chinos behind him who's designing his next PowerPoint presentation to pick up his mobile phone and also start chatting at full volume. I had no complaints with my hot apple cider and when the wifi repeatedly didn't work for me a staff member was kind enough to reset it and come over to make sure that made it work (it did). The folks that work here are nice. It's clean, Metro-accessible and the bathroom's not terribly dodgy. It's the clientele that puts me off. I wouldn't rule out a return trip but I've certainly no plans to coming running back to Quartermaine.
google avatar

Lily W.

Yelp
Service was just terrible. It was my first time in there and I had assumed the there was some merit in the crowd but I was not impressed with their coffee either. A few recommendations. 1.) I ended up asking what the system is preferred for the line to order because I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt that I just didn't know the store very well. Phillz coffee is an example of an unusual setup but I would say they make it obvious to customers. If the line is supposed to be along the pastry shelf then don't have the staff who is taking the orders stand to the right of the register because having the staff taking orders far away encourages customers to hover around the register. Also, it should be up to the staff to help regulate the line and I got the sense that the staff who I presumed to be in charge of the ground coffee took the stance that it's just wasn't his job. 2.) in general staff was just rude. I asked for half and half and he replies, "it's not out there"? Yes, I'm asking because it's not available.

Yelp
Super cute coffee shop with great coffee drinks and smoothies (a lot less pricey than puree around the corner!) great vibe, excellent service (shout out CARLY! :) and delicious treats, I would so be a regular if I lived here.
google avatar

Maggie Maria T.

Yelp
Not a coffee drinker here but I can review their lattes. Actually just one latte, most specifically the spiced chai latte. I love it! It's very sugary though but it's my go to at that spot. Service is quick despite the long line. However, the bar can get very cramped because to get a lid for your drink sometimes you have to really be careful and not bump anyone, especially those who are already drinking hot beverages. I don't know what's the logic behind serving the drinks without lids like they do at Starbucks. They don't really have much space there so why not move the half & half and all the other add ons somewhere else? They do have space elsewhere. That's my only complain. They have a point system so you can get free drinks once you accumulate enough points.
google avatar

Alex D.

Yelp
I'm writing only not the quality of the coffee of the beans. The beans themselves are not bad, but they are nothing to write home about. The coffee lacks any nuanced flavor notes, even though they say they have them. This is probably because they store the beans out in the open exposed to both air and light, which is not ideal, and because they were not fresh enough given the open air. The price rivals other local roasters, but they do not give the same quality. of others in the DC area. Instead, it comes out tasting a little better than Starbucks, which is fine, but not worth the price, and certainly not up to the standards I have come to expect form a local roaster. That being said, the staff was exceptionally friend, the shop was spacious, and well air-conditioned.
