On the Grid : Que Chula Es Puebla

"Que Chula dishes out some of the best Mexican north of Market Street. The interior is equal parts humble and full of pride, and it can be a great birthday party spot. Blankets and sombreros line the wall, the windows are filled with neon and covered with security bars welded into mountainous landscapes. We just moved in nearby, and this place is such a gem. A huge menu, and everything we’ve had so far has been delicious. Food comes out pretty quick and everyone seems really nice. We still haven’t dined in yet, but the ambiance is great so hopefully we will soon. Also has a cooler filled with drinks and some beers that can be bought and taken to go.

Google
Service was excellent! Very attentive! Food was good! Thank you to Miguel for the great assistance today!

Google
It's a shame that the food is failing. This used to be one of my favorite places in the neighborhood but this just seems irresponsible. How is a taco salad this wet? How is this even possible? Worst part is I went in and ordered for take out.

Vivek Sharma

Google
This is one of my favorite spots in Philly. Great atmosphere and service. the chicken enchiladas with mole sauce is excellent. On this visit we found out they added a full bar which only increases the appeal. The food is very reasonably priced and you leave feeling satisfied and happy.

The waitress I had here was very nice and attentive, no problems there. I ordered a chicken chimichanga with no lettuce or anything on the side. It came out quickly, with the lettuce etc that I asked to be excluded. I only got through half the chimichanga because it was probably the worst I've ever had. It was incredibly bland, like no seasoning or taste at all. Also, it was soggy. The pulled chicken was *wet* and the tortilla which was supposed to be crispy was absolutely soggy. When I went to pay, the check comes out with an extra "service" charge and I couldn't get a straight answer if that was like the tip, or something else. I got a lemonade, too, which was seriously watered down. Do not recommend.

Google
Que Chula es Puebla is an amazing restaurant! The food was AMAZING—the steak burrito, fajitas, and fresh guacamole were all fantastic. But the real standout was the staff, who went above and beyond with their friendliness. While there’s no happy hour menu, they offer $8 draft beers and margaritas, which are large and a great value. This is definitely my new go-to spot for drinks and Mexican food!

Google
As a Mexican, I was willing to pay a premium to eat authentic Mexican food and was severely disappointed. Extremely overpriced for the quality of food. The tacos had soggy and undercooked tripas, the esquite was half water and completely bland, the tamales were bulky and odd tasting, the chicarrones were poorly dressed and simply untasty, and no salsa was given despite asking for it. Not sure who claimed this was authentic, but I will definitely not be a returning customer.

Google
It was my first visit and I can say right away that I am definitely coming back! The service is great and food is awesome! I had a Steak Burrito, while my girlfriend had Steak, Chicken and Pork Tacos. The steak was flavorful and not overcooked. The tacos were excellent, especially the pork taco with pineapple! There is plenty of seating for friends and family to dine. While we were there we saw a lot of "to go" orders being picked up.

Yelp
Delicious authentic food! We been ordering here alot, my go to is the authentic shrimp tacos and churros!

Yelp
A really good first experience. I enjoyed my meal a lot. Our waiter was great. The crowd was small but there was a constant flow of customers, a lot of pick up orders. There was so much food that I had enough for a meal the next day. The guac was fresh and the chips were crisp. I also tried their Jamaica and there was so much, and it was good. The menu was big so I'm exited to go back and try some new things.

Yelp
Got the beef enchiladas from DoorDash. It has a spice kick to it. Not too much which was great for me because I don't like super spicy food. The beef wasn't all that good a bit dry I think next time I'll try grilled chicken or just cheese enchiladas but I will say being from Cali I was impressed with how everything came together overall. I'm sure I'll be ordering again.

Yelp
Authentic (American-Mexican) and delicious! There are a lot of bad Mexican restaurants in this town but this one is quite good. Authentic chips and salsa, huge portions, and friendly service. Over-priced, for what most patrons want in a good Mexican "joint" and would be better with more reasonable prices. PS IMPORTANT COMPLAINT- they really need a margarita machine as the blended margaritas need some help. They aren't consistent, nor are they strong enough to justify the $15!
google avatar

Yelp
Have been coming here since the very beginning and I love how it's evolved over time! It was once a little hole in the wall and has turned into a little piece of Mexico in this city. Teresa, the owner is super kind and very attentive to everyone that comes in. Everything that I have ordered or someone in my party has been a hit. Looking forward to what the future holds for this establishment but I know only positives will come! Also, I recommend the flan for dessert!
google avatar

Jordyn K.

Yelp
This place is a gem. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. But don't sleep on the margaritas. The staff is great and happy to make recommendations and answer questions. It's never crowded... but never empty. They do great take out too! Prices are great to boot!

Yelp
Such a cute hidden gem! The ceviche was absolutely delicious and the service was great.

Yelp
So good you have to go. You will not regret it. The food the service and the ambiance is fantastic

Yelp
The waitress Ania Rodriguez was extremely mean spirited snappy and downright rude and the food was sub par. Would not recommend based on service alone.

Adrianna K.

Yelp
My boyfriend and i are from Delaware, so running into this spot was awesome! Everything was extremely fresh, and we had the best service. 100% recommend if you're looking for a good, filling meal!

Yelp
My husband and I just moved here from San Francisco, where good, authentic Mexican food is plentiful. We were a bit skeptical of finding a good spot in Philly, but Que Chula Es Puebla is a winner! I had the chiles rellenos, which had this thick eggy batter with a soft tomato-y sauce on top, a style I've never had before, and it was super tasty. Husband had chicken fajitas, and the chicken was tender and juicy, the flavors great. Our friends enjoyed their quesabirria and chimichangas. Their salsas are flavorful and pack a spice wallop, which I loved, and came free with a plate of thick warm chips topped with refried beans and cotija. Service was a smidge slow, but friendly. Prices are okay. Lots of seating in a casual environment. Will definitely be back to try more!

Yelp
I was craving sopes and decided to try this place since it is super close to my house. I ordered before I left my house and arrived at the store 10 minutes later. I walked in and the staff person was helping another customer, I waited in line for him to finish. When that customer left the phone rang, the staff person answered and I still stood there waiting. He took their order as I stood there. About 2 minutes later he looked up and pleasantly asked "Can I help you"? I told him I was there to pick up my order of sopes and guacamole. He told me my total, which was higher than I expected. I asked him the cost of each item, and I realized that the prices online were outdated. Not a huge deal, bc I was excited to satisfy my craving for sopes. Once I got home, I tore open my bag and dug into the guacamole. Bland and not fresh. I tried the sopes, they were the thickest I have ever had (too thick) and also bland. I had to use the hot sauce to give it flavor. That was $26 down the drain.

Yelp
Place is amazing. Authentic Mexican food. Definitely recommend birra. But everything is great here

Yelp
The outside of this place was a little off putting, I wasn't sure if I even wanted to go inside... honestly, it looked like a scary neighborhood bar. However, once inside, the atmosphere was very warm and inviting. From the music, to the decor, to the staff, it was great. I went on a Friday afternoon, and it was a small crowd, but service was attentive and speedy, which I appreciated. We had nachos, taco salad and quesadillas--all of which were tasty. I wouldn't say that anything in particular stood out, in terms of the food, but it wasn't bad at all. It's worth a return visit to try more on the menu + the cocktails. The churros were delicious, the highlight of my son's meal. He can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
Very spacious restaurant with a lot of seating. Their menu has changed from the photos uploaded in previous reviews. I tried to order a steak and Mexican sausage burrito and was informed they do not have steak. I tried the shredded beef burrito instead and it was delicious. They have a full bar plus a fridge with plenty of cervezas to choose from. Take out came with 2 salsas- verde and chipotle.
google avatar

Crystal W.

Yelp
This is a lesser known restuarant in Fishtown but it is surprisingly good. It's not exactly a traditional hole in the wall because inside is clean and spacious with plenty of seating. I had 3 carne asada tacos for $8.99 in the traditional style. They were good street tacos but the best tacos I ever had in my life (that would be a random taco stand in Winter Haven, Florida). But it's a pretty good Mexican place in Philly that's not "Americanized" like El Vez. I would pass on the chips and side of bean dip because I didn't like how the chips, although baked and not greasy, weren't light and airy. They tasted more like pita chips. Would be back again.

Teresa B.

Yelp
Had several food quality issues in one order: guacamole contained top, pit part of the avocado mixed in. Discovered it midway through eating and almost cracked my tooth. Chimichanga had entire toothpick inside. Will never eat here again.

Yelp
Que Chula has some of the best Mexican food around and the service is spectacular. Highly recommended

Yelp
So, just a short walk north of Girard, there's a Mexican place that gives complementary chips and beans, huge portions, AND is BYOB? Count me in! For the chips, green salsa was a bit better than the red. Unlike the other Mexican places in No Libs/Fishtown, this one has the nopales, tamales, and rellenos that you probably haven't had in a minute if you frequent places nears the Commons or those taco trucks on Girard. I'm from an area with a lot of quality Mexican restaurants on one block, and this place comes the closest to what I find to be my favorite style! The cooks in the back are chatting it up and you can see them making everything quickly and oh so fresh. Tamales were definitely home made, maybe needed a little more sauce, but it was jammed with meat! I probably wouldn't get the thin steak again, but the rice and beans, chile rellenos, tamale, mole enchilada, green onions, and shrimp have me craving another date at Que Chula Es Puebla! Looks like the reviews point to a no for delivery, but for a good value eating in, most definitely.
google avatar

Eduardo C.

Yelp
This is a really good Mexican restaurant in the neighborhood! I would take my friends and family. I placed an UberEats order for 3 Pastor Tacos and a Tamal. I did put a note to not add onion to my tacos but when I received them they had onion (main reason for the ding). The tamal was also warm when it arrived, but it was cold by the time I finished my tacos. I felt like the tamal was too dry (but again, it was cold when I started eating it). I was very impressed with the flavor of the marinated pork, and 3 tacos for less than 10, you can't beat it.

Shanda S.

Yelp
The horchata here is the truth. Very spiced, very refreshing, and very delicious. I've also enjoyed the food that I've ordered for delivery (mostly tacos and enchiladas). They deliver promptly, the food is hot and fresh, and everything is as advertised. It's a bit of a hidden gem in the area.
google avatar

Jordan S.

Yelp
Being from CA, it's so hard to find quality mexican. Que Chula is absolutely fire -- couldn't ask for a better burrito
google avatar

Retna S.

Yelp
This review is for the shrimp fajitas. To my disappointment the shrimps and bell peppers lack of flavor although the veggies are fresh and perfectly cooked. The refried beans is very runny and not appetizing. The red Mexican rice is the ok. It comes with warm tortillas. I don't recommend this at all.

Yelp
Come here if you feel like being surprised on what you get and how much you tip! TLDR: The food here is great the service not so much. Beware of tip gouging! Went in here with a friend, i ordered fish tacos they gave me shrimp tacos. My friend ordered 3 steak & 1 pork taco. Did not get the pork taco. The server didn't check on us once after we got our food even though our empty beers were sitting on the table. Finally, we called the waiter over and asked for the check. The check had a "Service Fee" that was 10% of the bill. We asked another server walking by if that was a tip, they said no they split it amongst the staff...... aka a tip? Our server never told us there was an auto 10% tip. Then our server brings the machine out to pay & stands there while the big tip buttons come up on the screen "15%" "20%" or "25%". So if you choose the lowest option (for the poor service we received), 15%, you're tipping 25% in total and look cheap..... I've always been a great tipper, but this tip culture needs to chill. Makes me wanna hit "no tip", you already chose your tip on the auto grat.
google avatar

Yelp
It's been years and they still got it! I order take out froM here at least once a week. My order is always right and the food travels well. Nothing soggy. Try the flan! It's the best I've had in all philly
google avatar

Chelsey R.

Yelp
I use to frequent this place often. Especially the Agua Frecas. I usually get a large watermelon mixed with pineapple and it's costs about $5. I ordered and today it was$10! I asked why was it double than usual and I got a shrug. I saw the receipt and saw I was charged for 2 large drinks. I asked why was I charged for two large instead of two smalls (if they need the charge for inventory) but again I just got an "oh well" So I won't be back with those prices.
google avatar

Jess R.

Yelp
Was really craving Mexican food and stumbled across this place. Walked in and ordered take out. The staff was extremely friendly, it was affordable, and took about 10 minutes. Everything came out delicious and just how we had ordered. The inside of the restaurant was stunning and we definitely will be back to sit at the bar and eat sometime!
google avatar

Pamela D.

Yelp
Went for lunch with a friend. The free chips are homemade and come with warm bean sauce and queso fresco. They were the highlight of the meal. My friend ordered one chicken and one cheese enchilada, but got 2 cheese enchiladas instead. I ordered chile relleno with chicken. It clearly had been frozen. It smelled like freezer and instead of having a light and crunchy coating, it was soggy and stale tasting. Dousing it with the pretty good salsa verde and salsa roja didn't help. Service was pleasant and quick, but there really is no reason to go here.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
Ordered takeout tacos for 13 people and requested everything to be packaged separately so we could assemble ourselves. Portions were VERY generous, especially with ALL the trimmings. Not just the large foil pan of tortillas and three types of meat, but there was an ABUNDANCE of: cheese, sour cream, diced onions, chopped cilantro, sliced limes, radishes, plus plenty of salsa verde & salsa roja. Definitely will be ordering again :)
google avatar

Yelp
I may be the only one who didn't enjoy this restaurant but I will tell it like it is. For vegetarians, there is not much of a choice. I came here with a party of 8 + 2 kids (all family). I really wanted to go to a place in center city, but god knows why reservations for groups this large can't be reserved. Makes no sense. Anyways, the next best option was this Mexican spot. We ordered two guacamole and chips for the table - one was mild and one was spicy. The spicy one was just fresh jalapenos added (which obviously makes it extremely spicy). I did get red sauce enchiladas with rice and beans on the side which were good. However, the next morning, my stomach did not feel good at all. I'm determined something about my food and a few others was not made right because I've gone to many authentic mexican restaurants and was perfectly fine. All in all, I won't be back.
google avatar

Ju L.

Yelp
Had some tacos de lengua for dinner last night and the portions were truly huge. Each bite of taco was filled with a mouthful of delicious lengua. My husband had the taco salad with steak that came in a tortilla bowl and enjoyed it. The guacamole dip came with the chips already in the dip, which was strange but tasted fine. All in all, portions were generous and made for a satisfying meal.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food convenient to Fishtown and NoLibs? Sign me up. Ordered takeout from here twice now and it's been delicious both times. My boyfriend and I most recently ordered elote, shrimp tacos, carne asada tacos, and a carne asada burrito. The elote!!! Wowza. Came on a stick, which I love (because what American doesn't love food on a stick?), and was loaded with spice and cheese and sauce. Gah. I want one right now!!! The shrimp tacos were tasty - I like that the shrimp was grilled and not breaded. The carne asada tacos were superb, like some of the best I've ever had (and I consider myself a carne asada connoisseur). You can pick the type of toppings for your tacos - we went with lettuce, tomato, onions, cilantro, and cheese for the shrimp and traditional cilantro and onions for the carne. The green salsa that comes with the tacos is where it's at! My boyfriend also housed his burrito without speaking, so that's always a good sign. It was huge and I was kind of jealous, but the tacos were also pretty filling! Looking forward to ordering again soon and trying more of their extensive menu!

Mikey D.

Yelp
One of the best take out spots in the neighborhood Steak tacos hit every time and that green and brown sauce they give you is great
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Ate here over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the steak tacos - was given the choice of all toppings and authentic or something and I picked authentic. Steak was cooked well, toppings were good, good portion size, seasoned well. The table also shared the flan and tres leches cake. Desserts were okay...the consistency of the flan was a little off, perhaps that batch was a little over cooked but the flavor was still good. Tree leches cake wasn't anything to write home about but was still okay. Would definitely go back, interested in trying other taco flavors.

Yelp
I've ordered take out from Que Chula Es Puebla a couple of times, originally picked mainly because it seemed like one of the most authentic options in the area. That being said, after trying to go for a more authentic experience, I decided I wanted to order a burger. Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking either. It may not have been authentic, but it certainly was an experience. First of all, this thing is HUGE. About the size of a small pizza. It wasn't mentioned in the description but this monster is clearly meant to be shared unless you haven't eaten in weeks. I was not the biggest fan of it. The patty was very dense and didn't have enough seasoning. And because it was so big, the proportions of the condiments, lettuces, etc of the rest of the burger were way off. Would not order again. Now what you *must* order are the french fries and guacamole. One of my favorite places for both french fries and guacamole in the city. They also give you plenty of hot sauces. I'm a fan of the green, but the red has a nice smokey taste to it. The Shredded Chicken Tacos are a good pick too. Not the best tacos I've had (a bit dry) but very filling. Will probably be ordering again, if only for the french fries and guacamole.

Yelp
Great Mexican food around the Fishtown area. Would definitely recommend Authentic Mexican cuisine
google avatar

Stephanie G.

Yelp
Food was great- very wonderful authentic Mexican food. I was recommended to go here by someone I met through work and it was definitely a good recommendation. The service was a bit slow honestly and they screwed up my order. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and they gave me a beef quesadilla. It was okay because I love beef too but it isn't what i ordered. Still ate it and thoroughly enjoyed it! Big portions and great food. Would definitely go back there but am definitely interested in getting delivery! They seemed to be very busy with the deliveries and there was a lot of people in the restaurant as well which is a great sign. Definitely interested in going back!
google avatar

Finalchi M.

Yelp
Its a shame, been coming here for years but i must say this will be the last time i bring my family to this establishment. Customer service has really gone out the window. Waitress did not remember any of our orders and even when corrected or reminded simply "in one ear out the other", guys behind the bar are busy taking shots to care about taking care of those dining in.

Utsav P.

Yelp
Ordered extra steak on a burrito and got a burrito with no extra steak. Tried to take it back and they laughed? At least they made me a new one. Again, without extra steak.

Yelp
[to the tune of "Juice" by Lizzo] Mirror, mirror on the wall I'm craving a taco or two (ooh baby) Need some spicy green salsa So you know what I'm gonna do (ooh baby) I just want something cheap and fast and I'd love to bring my crew (ooh baby) Grab a few beers, squadding up Inviting you and you and you that's how we roll If I'm hangry, yes you know I'm gonna whine (burrito bowls) But Que Chula hits the spot 'most every time (now you know) Bring tequila baby, hit it with the lime (yeah you know) Those chorizo are the baddest, that one's mine! It ain't my fault that the nacho's coming loose And I'll take some extra too Gonna steal that guac from yous... Que Chula has really come in hot in our lives lately. It's a great BYOB for a casual date or dinner out with some buddies, they always seem to have room, withing walking distance of ACME or a few bottle shops if you need to grab a drink, and their green salsa is so delish. I love the tacos, especially that they're not like... $15 for two. less than 10 for three, and we're always full after two meaning BREAKFAST TACO LEFTOVERS! Chips come with beans and a dusting of cheese, they take credit cards now, and the staff is super friendly without hovering. 5/5
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
Pretty good food. We ordered to go and it was ready when they said it would be ready. Really no major complaints here. Just 3/5 because food was fine - not GREAT!
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
Cash only / BYOB Taco portions are generous and very fresh ingredients. Same with generous guacamole ($7)! Complimentary chips smothered with refried beans and queso fresco are delicious, especially with the green salsa (tomatillo?). Al pastor tacos ($10 for 3) have a lot of flavor and spice. Pairs well with Mexican coke. Flan ($4) is creamy, with deep caramel flavor, and addictive! Overall great portion and authentic quality for the price. Bill for dinner for two about $30-40. Cute atmosphere/decorations inside and just two blocks from Fishtown/Girard ave main drag, and Girard MFL stop.
google avatar

Maryanne F.

Yelp
Covid19 delivery - great experience I will definitely order from here again (or maybe one day dine in some day in the future when quarantine resolves...) I got the Tampiquenas platter, steak burrito, and suadero/chorizo tacos. Everything was delicious. They have such a large menu I hope to try new things in the future.

Tyson L.

Yelp
Their food slaps they don't miss and I'm sorry but I must correct the fact that they are PERUVIAN NOT MEXICAN it grinds my gears that ppl frequent this place that tell you just that and you still say Mexican food READ PPL

Jeff K.

Yelp
Very good authentic Mexican food. Service was great. Very friendly staff. Had three different tacos all tasted great. Elote every good.

Kacey C.

Yelp
got the chicken burrito, was very mushy and bland. tortilla was wet too. Would be great if grilled a bit more and added pico and some more spice. Got a side of guac and it also very bland. Just ok

Yelp
Where is love? I found love at Que Chula es Puebla in South Kensington, just a short walk from Girard. Whenever I leave the city, I yearn for the chorizo tacos from Que Chula. I enjoy many other menu items. My go to is the Chorizo tacos accompanied by a fish taco and Jamaica. Four tacos and hibiscus tea is a meal of champions. I ask for extra limes for my tacos. I get everything on my tacos but the traditional tacos are equally amazing. The chorizo is at Que Chula is unmatched by any restaurant in the city. In addition to the chorizo tacos, I highly recommend their salads, chimichangas, ceviche, and flan. Que Chula is BYOB. Usually, enjoy my meals with a glass of water. I make an exception when I visit Que Chula, I love their Jamaica. The tea is wonderfully sweet and tart. The restaurant is a wonderful casual but intimate place to eat with friends.

Yelp
Some of the best authentic tasting tacos i've had in the area. Also had the mole chicken which was delicious and a lot of food for the money. Great dependable mexican spot for everything you might be craving
