20 Essential LGBTQ Bars in San Francisco and the East Bay

"Open since April 2021, Que Rico is one of a number of new-school East Bay queer bars and nightclubs. Owner Valentino Carrillo says he aims to cater to both the queer and Latino or Latinx communities by making Que Rico a safe space for those at the beginning of their identity exploration and for those who have been out for years. Oftentimes the party spills out onto the rainbow-lit parklet, where patrons can enjoy happy hour specials, Sunday brunch, or perhaps a a Beyonce tribute show. Food comes from Carrillo’s successful East Oakland restaurant La Frontera Mexican Restaurant, known for serving golden quesabirria tacos stuffed with cheese and braised beef." - Paolo Bicchieri, Eater Staff

Taco Tuesday at Qué Rico is an absolute steal! They serve $2 tacos that are honestly ridiculously good—super flavorful, fresh, and way better than you’d expect for the price. I had three and immediately wished I’d ordered five (pro tip: go big). They’re small, so you’ll want a few if you’re making it a meal. Out of appreciation (and a little guilt, because there’s no way this isn’t a labor of love), I grabbed a drink to support the bar—and I’m glad I did! More than just the food, Qué Rico has such a safe, welcoming vibe. As a cisgender woman, I really appreciate being able to grab a solo meal in the evening and feel totally at ease. Everyone is so kind, and the atmosphere is vibrant without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of neighborhood spot that reminds you how good an inclusive community can truly feel.

Before you go here, read this: WHILE IT IS LABELED AS A LGBT+ CLUB (& it is VERY welcoming to everyone), THIS IS A PREDOMINANTLY LATIN/HISPANIC SPACE. Know that, understand that. If you are looking for Lady Gaga music & circuit gays, go to The Castro over in SF. Please do not complain that there was mainly bachata or banda music playing because HELLO? Read the name?! Now, my time there was fun. I, as a black man, enjoy mingling with other cultures. However, an individual would probably be most comfortable if they themselves spoke Spanish or came from similar backgrounds as the folks who frequent this space. Nonetheless, the drinks were flowing, the music was booming and I had a good time during the time I was there. Would go back if i’m in the area.

Google
Great gay Latinx bar. Very diverse group of people showed up for a drag show and it was loads of fun. Drinks were great and there was some food. The show was outdoors, and the bay gets chilly at night so wear a coat if you like plan to see a show at night. The inside was cute too but we mostly hung outside due to COVID and waiting for drag show

Google
Anyone looking to have a great night out, this is the place. Such a vibe. I went to Oakland to visit from SD and I wish they had more environments like this full of our heritage. Love love

Google
First time there, I had lots of fun, I was solo yet felt part of the vibe. I’m not much of a Spanish language person, the overall singing and laughter lifts one up

Google
Great food and drinks...Taco Tuesday is the best here ..and so affordable...I wouldn't change anything...love it and this place

Exclusive Latin LGBTQA Destination. Vibes is Good, Drag Shows are Wild, and Gogo's are Caliente! Make sure you try the Quesabirrias with the Consome Sauce! "Bomb" Ask for Valentino if you have any issues he will make it right!

If you want to get you broken glasses on your car this a perfect place to come . Dancers and owners are not good attendees here , plus beers is costing 9$ each, too expensive come drunk before 🫣. Too much drag queens show (2 hours of total ) and sometime music is bored En pocas palabras mal hay club y caro todo, ojo con los vidrios del carro! .

Yelp
beautifical atmosphere, vibes and food. highly recommend! I for sure will come here again and suggest this club for visitors and locals alike!

Yelp
Fun bar for dancing and drag shows. The bartenders are great and serve really good drinks. The food is very good. Overall, a great place to hang out

Yelp
This evaluation and rating is for their lunch and Taco Tuesday only. Went there for lunch and it was pretty bad. The place didn't even seem open and we were the only customers there. The place was pretty dirty including the table tops. The lady working there spoke zero English and had her young daughter translate for her. The tacos were small. Food was barely warm, refried beans tasted weird and I didn't eat them. Even at $2 per taco I'm not going back. Just hoping I don't get sick.

Yelp
Door cover is $30 and I got mug outside the club. Necklace and bracelet rip off me. My car window broken into. This sucks, I'll get over it. These days is not worth going out.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered door dash which is already expensive don't mind paying but didn't get a super taco I got a super dried boring taco and I was so hungry and the pics looked amazing but I had to add stuff to save it and didn't have crema at home I am livid

Yelp
I was recommended to this place by a friend he said the burritos were good, I ordered 3 birria tacos with rice and beans. Man was up at 4 am throwing up ended up getting food poisoning from this place.

Yelp
Came here on a Tuesday - had a great time! $1 Taco Tuesdays and Karaoke was super lit. Everyone was very friendly, and bartender was really nice. The chicken tacos were really good btw, I wish I got more. Got the chicken wings as well - flavor was a little bland, but it was cooked amazingly - super juicy! 5 stars for vibes :) would definitely come back if I have the chance

Yelp
I was looking forward to eating here on a taco Tuesday night. upon entry folks had food and drinks in front of them and table numbers. it wasn't clear if a host/ waiter would take our order or if we had to go to the bar to order there was a staff member behind the bar. not once did he greet us or offer us a menu. so we sat for a while expecting some guidance from the staff no one ever came out. I stood up and looked for the menus. staff still did not make contact or advise where the menu was at. after finding the menu I realized they were upside down we ended up leaving and didn't even order. the staff person came from behind the bar and removed items from in front of the tables.. and still didn't say a single word to guests that entered the establishment *Since the owner wants to respond in a petty manner* my review is based purely on the lack of customer service his response below indicates the poor service is a trickle-down from management it's unfortunate

Yelp
Love Que Rico , never had their food but every time I've gone dancing it's always a good time. Everyone is nice and welcoming If you're looking for a good time this is the place..

Yelp
I went here for the first time last night. I've been wanting to try this place, and hit up the taco Tuesday. The good: The pastor street tacos for a dollar were the best deal in the Bay Area. I even ordered ten more to take home. The bartender was friendly and sexy. The Unacceptable: Worst margarita I've ever had. My friends was bad too. The decor in here is horrible. The thing is it's an inexpensive easy fix if they got someone who knows what they're doing. The cheap plastic folding tables...no. The lighting in the main bar area... all wrong. The lighting behind the bar and visible mini fridge.. unattractive. Now I'm sure the place is a lot of fun when the fun kicks in but there's no excuse for bad margaritas, cheap plastic patio furniture and horrible lighting, in a gay bar. It's as if no thought whatsoever went into it. It's an easy fix so fix it. I'm sure it's less noticeable when the club is full of people. We were there when it was empty( for some reason they had cancelled karaoke so was like is this a gay bar or a taqueria? I'd still drive from concord to get the tacos. All good. I'm still eager to try it on a big night. No doubt it's a fun place.

Yelp
East bay burrito review #29 First bite 3/7 Meat 2/7 Rice 3/7 Beans 4/7 Rice 3/7 Cheese 2/7 Salsa 5/7 Overall 3/7 I understand this isn't a taqueria or truck and I'm unfairly marking down the establishment that I have no other interaction with. But I had the burrito and wasn't impressed. Mostly the meat was off and gristly.

Brian M.

Yelp
I had a great time at Que Rico. Such a welcoming environment with great people. I love the different style of music they have in each area. Super super fun place.

Yelp
Grabbed two orders of Steak super burrito because there was a deal going on with buying one burrito and getting the other one for free. The super burrito was wrapped around in a large tortilla with rice, beans, steak, sour cream and salsa all inside. I was very shocked when I had to pay for my guacamole when usually the super burrito would automatically include that with the menu. Never had such an experience before. Beef was very dry and even came with bones for some reason. Not much sour cream was spread around the burrito which caused rice to be very dry and just mushy. I selected pinto and fried beans cause two burritos were ordered. Fried beans and pinto beans were so dry that I had to chug water down constantly just to help bring the food down my throat. The size of the burrito is good for about 2 people, but at the end of the day it still depends on how much you eat.

Yelp
Okay who knew big it clubs also offered food? Or whoever decided ,"let us capitalize on all these hungry people," genius. The music played was perfect for a surprise birthday we had for our friend. And yes, the food was even better. You cannot deny the tacos, quesadillas and fries if Que Rico Nightclub. Honestly I don't think I drank an once of alcohol, instead I focused on the food and the good vibes. Great location and great people working at this establishment. Can't wait to go back for the theme nights they have.

Yelp
Do not order food from this place!! How do you mess up on nachos ? and leave out the most important ingredient the cheese!

Iliana C.

Yelp
I'm a fellow gay, but they lie to get $$, they put one price but they can "change it as they see fit" we went in thinking we was paying for a certain party, but once we got in, they said no, charged extra. And it wasn't even lit. They charge extra for no reason . Don't go here on events. They LOVE to get over ! Stay away

Yelp
I finally went in person with some pals last night. We stuffed our felafes with quesabirria, quesacameron, tots and nachos. We drank some mircle elixirs until the RPDR viewing party! We got to meet Salina from season 15 and she was lovely. Everyone was super nice. Definitely a great vibe.

Yelp
This is our go to nightclub with our friends around the East Bay, we been coming here since 2021. We are regular costumers but to be honest Dj Jaffeth needs to upgrade his playlists, we been noticing lately that he plays the same exact songs at the same exact time, same exact Latin mix. Usually we come here Friday's and some Saturday's and music it's the same. Even though we ask him to play certain song he completely ignore us. As a Dj he should have to be up to date with the trending music. We were so happy when they had Dj Tatiana on January 28th. She's always up to date with the music and surprise people with new Latino mixes and also she's always willing to play any song you request her. We know her from LA since last year. As far from drinks and food I can't complaint. Prices are pricey but fair. Their taco Tuesday it's the best and no one can beat them with their quesabirrias, they are delicious. Everyone who works here is very friendly and Valentino it's a nice and cool owner. Since last year he's been inviting really talented Drag queens from Rupaul's Drag Race and Que Rico Nightclub it's getting more popular. I know the issue with the music can be resolve, this place has a lot of potential and I highly recommended if you are looking for an LGBTQ+ bar/club around the area, we always feel safe here.

Yelp
Got one of their Groupons, been trying to use it and been to the address three times during posted open hours, just to find them closed. Maybe it could be good, but I have no idea. I tried calling them to ask when open hours were, left a message asking for a reply, and they never responded. Would love to review the food, but I can't.

Yelp
I went to Que rico on Friday night looking forward for a dance club as I am new to Oakland this is the first place that popped out on my search for a good dancing spot. I have to say this is disappointing, the place is small and the Bartender that served me was an asshole I won't be coming back. I work in the industry and I was shocked that he didn't accommodate on a small request for my drink substitute ; sprite for soda water. Not big deal but he said I was changin his recipe!. He said no, wTF are you a Bartender for? I don't recommend this place.
google avatar

Antonio P.

Yelp
Got the super chicken burrito! Amazing! Get it for yourself! Lots of options to customize when ordering through yelp or another app.
google avatar

Eduardo C.

Yelp
Great music for a Latin night. The drinks price is ok but don't expect amazing cocktails. The crew was amazing.
google avatar

Jude D.

Yelp
I'm so stoked there's a new queer bar in downtown Oakland! Anddd you can get hella good Mexican food there. ( get the quesabirria it's delicious) Also who doesn't want to post with the adorable gay angel wings on the front door?

Nunyo C.

Yelp
Trash, the "super burrito" says in the item description that it has guacamole, but then they charge you for guacamole, so does it have guacamole or not? Sounds like it doesn't if I'm supposed to pay for it, so why am I paying for a "super burrito with guacamole" if it doesn't actually have guacamole? Am I supposed to pay for guacamole twice?????
google avatar

Kat D.

Yelp
Que Rico? Que So-So We paid 30$ a ticket for the Willow Pill show and I'm not gonna lie this is the most disappointing drag show I've been to. Started at 9, but there was no drag until at least 10:30. When it finally started the audio was messing up and the queens were not stoked about it. We saw 3!!! Songs and they were like "we will be back in an hour" we barely got any FaceTime with Willow. I don't think I will ever be back. There were advertisements for drink specials but the bartender didn't know them...12$ for a well tequila soda? Yikes
google avatar

Loann H.

Yelp
A girlfriend found this on "things to do" and they had taco Tuesday as well as drag show night. Okay.. say less. We invited a few others to come out with us. When we arrived, it was already last call for their tacos and drinks but we managed to get some drinks in and a big round of tacos. We misunderstood the ad and it was actually a viewing party first THEN a drag show so we were pretty loud in the beginning. Oops. But love having food with a show. I was super sober so excuse me while I look awkward in the corner hahah
google avatar

Yelp
Yummy Tacos!!! They have good music drinks and these tacos. Chill place to have a drink and some tasty tacos.

Yelp
Great service! Only recommendation is the food could be quicker, but appreciate the makeup for that. Keep doing wonderful events!

Yelp
Food is amazing! Best bartenders in Oakland. The music is good, but it could be better! The owner seems very chill!

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and skip this place, go to Summer Bar which is just a few blocks away (https://www.thebarsummer.com/) . Unfortunately, I was attacked and harassed at this bar. At one point my drink spilled over on the bar because somebody bumped it ( it's a nightclub right? that's why they have plastic cups that hardly weigh anything and tip over) and that was their big excuse to kick me out (?). Yep makes sense . I honestly have been in the Bay for 17 years and I've never experienced something like this. There are better places in Oakland. Go to Summer Bar where the proceeds all go to help lgbtq youth. Que Rico, you are a joke . Byeeeee! Ps good job with your 11 health violations which are easily viewable here on Yelp. Taco, nope . **Update** Per the business owner's response, let me be clear that I would never, did never and shall never mistreat any patrons or staff in a bar or restaurant nor did that happen even remotely at this bar. I myself worked in restaurants and bars for over a decade and would never, ever do that. I had ONE drink at this place, that is all, no one was acting a fool and the business owner is making that up. The business owner calling me a "Karen" is just a good example of the level of professionalism at this bar. No one was being a "Karen" its just a cheap way to attack me on social. Honestly go somewhere else. If you are a straight person with your gay friend you wont be welcome. It is as simple as that and that is exactly what happened. Sad but true. There are SO many great and welcoming places in the downtown area. This is not one of them which is pretty heartbreaking considering its supposed to be a place of inclusion and acceptance
google avatar

Jessica W.

Yelp
Would not recommend this place. We were excited to try this place as it just opened. 1 star just for the quesabirria tacos which was alright compared to the other tacos we got. Do not order anything shrimp. It tasted like old chopped up shrimp... dry and grainy. I got a pretty sad expensive shrimp taco (labeled large on door dash menu but was a regular street taco size) with barely any onion or cilantro. The salsa on the side was slimy so I didn't use it. The Que Rico Tacos we're not worth it and expensive. Also same dry grainy shrimp and even dryer carne asada which had the consistency of grainy beef jerky. We didn't finish any of the tacos aside from the quasabirria tacos which was okay. Note, the consume was very small. We're disappointed that this place didn't work out. Hopefully we can visit again if quality improves.
google avatar

Grant C.

Yelp
I'm so happy this place was able to open! I was so sad when Club 21 closed. While it's not the same, it feels like a resurrection. I'm all for more gay bars. They have a great parklet with a stage. The performances are homegrown and entertaining. Came on a Wednesday and had so much fun. I plan on coming back here a lot.
google avatar

Antonella I.

Yelp
This place was such a disappointment. My partner and I really wanted to love this place as it reminds us of another club that used to be on Broadway called club BnB. We came here for the Drag Brunch at 2:30 which was $60 to reserve. Once they sat us down we went inside to order some food. My friends and I ordered tacos and a botana de fruta. Needless to say that the tacos were by far the worst I've ever tried. It was like eating at Taco Bell except the shredded cafeteria meat was swimming in oil. We ordered a margarita pitcher for 4 which they charged us $55 for. Super overpriced for well tequila and a whole bunch of sugar syrup. We were so disappointed with the food that we didn't even stay for the drag show.
google avatar

Marcus-Alex G.

Yelp
Cute new bar that still has that new bar feel and still getting things set up. You can't beat their prices, very fair, and on the lower side. Staff and environment was very positive and just good vibes all around. It's one of the few gay bars in the area, so it's nice to have a safe space to go to without having to go to SF. They have a ridiculously large outdoor area, which is really nice and ideal for brunch. Have not been yet, but will definitely try soon. The DJ was really funny and getting really into the show and dancing too. Definitely making this our go to spot on this side of the bay
google avatar

Randy H.

Yelp
Came on a very quiet night. Looking forward to being there when it's busier. The food was fantastic. The staff was absolutely great and I felt very safe. My only problem was being able to get from BART and back to BART safely but I'm not completely opposed to just driving my car when I come.
google avatar

Elania R.

Yelp
Love the food, the service and the staff! Convenient location with outside seating. It's a true diamond in downtown Oakland! Restaurant with a full bar. Ordered the quesabirria tacos with consume -- Delicious! Didn't make it to the club yet, but I'll be back...

Xime S.

Yelp
The thirst to rip off the clientele is high at this place so be warned and careful with your money at the bar. Very disappointed to see the main bartender rip me off +$20 per drink after I had made a purchase prior for 2 drinks for less than what he wanted to charge and for one less drink. I wouldn't recommend supporting them, they practice theft plain and simple if they're price gouging each drink and person. Bathrooms had no soap and overall place is just very poorly run, nothing like the old BNB. Sad to see these people run this place and prey on the Hispanic / LGBTQ community. Positives: drag show, open patio in/out.
google avatar

Yelp
I was visiting from OrangeCounty, CA . I had a wonderful night. The music was awesome and the crowd perfectly mix ... I

Yelp
Me and my boo came for taco Tuesday. Tacos were bomb $2 each but they didn't have chicken :/ so we had to get asada. I usually like green sauce but the red sauce was better!! My margarita was bomb af $10. It was a slow night they played ok music but I would definitely go back it's a vibe :) Order drinks to the left of the bar and food on the right!

Christopher M.

Yelp
As part of a day time pub crawl, I don't expect I had the full experience. Nice club. Decent dance floor. Handsome DJ, Fabian. Aside from the DJ, the other upside is that they serve food. Yum. Definitely a return to this location is a must.
google avatar

Luis H.

Yelp
What more can I say about the staff and the Drag shows being put on and the music and atmosphere is safe and welcoming to all who come here. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Daniel F.

Yelp

Yelp
On vacation from New Orleans, music was lit, but the bartenders were all so standoffish. Me and my friend were scared to ask for change to tip the queen haha. Also had to scream my order at the bartender cuz he wouldn't lean forward to better hear me. Like the musics loud bro you might have to give a little effort to hear your patrons. Then later on when I attempted to close my tab there was a crowd of dudes infront of the bar where the bartender that had been assisting me was at. So I couldn't stand directly infront his bar. So I stood slightly to the side and asked him to close my tab. So as he's closing it another bartender comes up to me and tells me that I need to move from infront of his bar if I'm not ordering a drink from him. So I instantly apologize then turn to apologize to the people I thought i must have been blocking from getting a drink- and there's no one there. There wasn't even someone behind me waiting for a drink. The bartender just felt like being a d*ck I guess. Also I like how the group of guys standing and leaning on the bar not ordering drinks weren't told to move but me, they guy tryna close his tab was told to. Anyway food looked lit tho but won't be going back next time I'm in town.

Carlos M.

Yelp
I tried to support this place but they really need to do something to update the vibe of the club. They literally play the same music every single time I go. Like my friends and I already know what songs they are gonna play. And they have the audacity to charge a cover of up to $20 dollars?? It's sad. The Latino LGBTQ+ deserves better
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Very loud sound speakers that makes it hard to have a conversation indoors but with an outside area if you wish to chill. This is the place to dance and get wild with sexy Latin gay men. Music is a combination of Latin pop hits and reggaeton. I stayed here only an hour as it wasn't really my vibe and too loud but for those of you who want to dance I would definitely recommend it.
google avatar

Howie L.

Yelp
Came to try out the food (and I didn't even realize it was a club). Bouncers (or whatever we can call the people gating the entrance) were stereotypically rude and wanted to charge me a cover just to go inside and order food to-go lol. But otherwise, the staff inside was super helpful and friendly. Average food but prices are bit higher..expected if I stayed for a full club experience. Events do seem cool though!
google avatar

Shelby N.

Yelp
We made a table reservation for a show, which cost money to reserve. We get to the bar and waited for an hour and then found out that the show wasn't happening. We asked for a refund for the table reservation and they only gave us half of the money back! So frustrating! Ridiculous that they wouldn't give the entire refund for the cancelled show. We will not be back.

Yelp
Great food, I ordered it on DoorDash today for dinner and it was yummy, I had some tacos and fries, the tacos had lots of flavor and nicely spiced, The fries were crispy even though they were thick cut. I will add this to one of my places to order from on DoorDash when I crave tacos.

Alejandra G.

Yelp
Order food from here today and I must say the quality in witch it was handled was horrible, plus my food was cold. And to top it off my order wasn't even complete. Won't order from here again
