How Airbnb Profits from Travelers’ Love of Experience | Eater

"A late-night Queens street-food walking tour run by Jo Mae “Jumi” Oraa and Greg Gouras that illustrates both the appeal and hurdles of Airbnb Experiences: their application took months to approve, they initially discounted the price to $40 to attract bookings before raising it to $55, and they rely on the platform to reach travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path attractions. Gouras became a licensed tour guide to professionalize the offering, but both hosts keep daytime jobs (data entry and nursing) and currently treat guiding as supplemental income with the possibility of going full-time in the future." - Deanna Ting

Sierra gave us a fantastic educational walking tour through Queens. We were introduced to amazing street food from many different cultures, and our guide Sierra was so informed about the history of the cultures and foods. A great tour!

Sierra is great! Our tour was on a rainy day, with all NYC residents, including one who was from the neighborhood. Sierra seamlessly adapted where we went to fit the group, and the day, including going to a brand new spot with a special kind of Ecuadorian grilled snack. I highly recommend booking a tour if you are coming to New York and want to learn about the food of the most diverse neighborhood on the planet.

We had a great tour with Sierra yesterday! Everything from start to finish was excellent. Outstanding, and diverse, foods from various parts of China and Taiwan. Sierra was able to combine a fascinating waking tour full of local history and culture with (many!) well-paced “snacks” along the way. Having someone guide our group through the food courts and tiny windows all with such amazing food was a great experience. Kudos to Sierra. It was a memorable day. Highly recommend!

Culinary Backstreets scores again- a fun tasty and interesting tour of the very diverse Queens and its food culture. Sierra was an excellent knowledgeable guide. Love to handmade boba, watercress and shrimp dumplings and more. Also gave me confidence to navigate an Asian food court. Love every minute!

We had such an amazing time on our Corona, Queens food tour with Culinary Backstreets. Sierra was an amazing guide - so deeply knowledgable and enthusiastic about all the cuisines we sampled. As Queens denizens ourselves, we still learned so much new to us and now feel inspired and empowered to explore this rich and fascinating neighborhood (and its street foods) on our own. We loved every minute of this tour.

Sierra is excellent! Culinary anthropologist is a fully accurate description. Really enjoyed not only the food but the stories and attention to detail about the history and the current neighborhood. Would definitely book with Sierra again!
