Can a restaurant be too casual, too laid back, or too open? Quiora might be bringing that vibe.
Located in the Ritz-Carlton Waikiki. Only valet parking is available, but validation is provided free for four hours. It's a little confusing trying to get there. There's no signage showing you the way, but not hard to find. Just walk past everything (front desk, lounge, pool, etc.) till you reach the end. You'll see the sign on the host desk showing "Quiora."
It's an outdoor dining area. Just pray for good weather. Definitely not ideal on windy and rainy days. But very ideal during sunset (that we JUST missed!).
Everything is quite simple. Including the menu with 4 pasta selections, 5 mains, 6 apps, and 3 sides.
We started with the Crispy Hen of the Woods Mushrooms. This was all right. Not quite what I expected. Roasting this made the mushrooms dry and flavorless, and there was not enough sauce or oil. I didn't get the earthiness. The farro was fine, but cold, which didn't go with the warm mushroom. The truffle crema on the bottom was delicious and tasty though. This had more earthiness than the mushroom!
The Kauai Prawns Calabrese was okay. Prawns were over cooked. Leaving it less than sweet, and tougher than usual. But the Calabrese sauce was very tasty and delicious with a nice spice kick from the chili oil. The accompanying focaccia was okay as well. Dry and dense. Thank goodness for the sauce!
The Mountain Pork Rigatoni was......not rigatoni. Not sure what happened here, but we received extra wide and thick pappardelle pasta instead. While I'm not complaining about the switch, why weren't we notified? Rigatoni would've worked better with the delicious and flavorful minced Mountain View pork too!
Finished the meal with the Mishima American Wagyu Ribeye--medium. This did not come out medium. It was close to well done. The steak was thin and cut to wide pieces. What's the point of cutting it that way? It's too big for a bite, and it's not easier to cut into smaller strips because it's harder to stabilize the pre-cut pieces. This wasn't a BIG deal, but just minor details that took away from a better experience. The Wagyu ribeye was still good to eat. Sure, not as tender and juicy if it was prepared correctly, but it was still tasty and it had the char taste! The accompanying sauces were delicious, especially the tomato pesto. I would've loved that on everything we had! The other sauce, Salsa Verde, was all right. It didn't quite go well with the steak. The charred broccolini was prepared well. Tender, tasty, and had a nice char taste.
Overall, this was still a decent meal. Sure, a lot of minor issues, but nothing major. Sauces were spot on! Definitely a nice place to enjoy a meal or celebrate a special occasion with a more casual feel. The service was fine. Didn't really feel anything because there wasn't much communication or interaction, but the manager was very friendly, courteous, and attentive. The menu is limited, but I appreciate the fact they used local ingredients with hand made pasta. But where was my handmade rigatoni?!
