The Best Breweries in Grand Rapids | Eater Detroit

"At the Dutton brewery, discover 20 taps showcasing beer, cider, and wine crafted on-site, spanning from traditional styles to experimental trials. Sip on the refreshing blueberry lemon basil gose on a sunny summer day spent on the patio, or enjoy the lighter malt profile of the Shandyside IPA, allowing the hoppy notes of grapefruit, orange, and pine to shine." - Courtney Burk

Google
My mother and I stopped here for dinner one day because it was on our list of places to try and we definitely didn't regret it. We generally like to order a couple appetizers and split them, which is what we chose to do here and we could not believe the amount of food that they brought to the bar. Tina, the lama Dilla was the biggest quesadilla I think I have ever seen and it was so delicious, especially with the avocado and the chipotle aïoli. We also ordered the dip flight thinking it would just be a small appetizer and it literally could've been a whole meal. Four different amazing dips, along with fresh tortilla chips and the most wonderful warm breaded pretzel braid that was to die for. We cannot wait to go back and try some of the other offerings on the menu.

Google
First time here, the wait was worth it. Service was excellent and friendly. They have outdoor seating as well, a lot of souvenirs you can buy. The menu had a lot of options and everything looked good. We got the dip flight (great for four people or more) we didn’t finish it. I got western BQQ burger w/ truffle fries and she got Texas Fried Rice. Highly recommend going back, no complaints on my end.

I had high hopes for this place. It was my sons 30th birthday. I ordered an olive burger. No onions as they make me nauseous and hurt my stomach bad. My order came I took a couple bites and realized it had onions. Disappointed I sent my plate back. The waitress talked me into another one with out onions. I got it to go. Got home and noticed onion sauce on the side. Thought that was weird. But thank ful out was not on my burger... until I took a bite. Again. Onions on my Burger! I cannot believe they didn't know when sending it home with me. Let's put onions on the side and give her a free appetizer. So she doesn't complain about the onions on the burger 2x! In all 2 burgers 2 drinks I paid $50. I got a horrible stomach ache and nausea and will be spending my son's birthday in the bathroom. I will not be back at all. People do have allergies! Pay attention. Cat enjoyed the meat.

Flavorful! Great burger and fries. - Death by Cheeseburger - $17: Super-deluxe smashburger with cheese poured over top of the bun. This thing is flavor explosive! (Yes, I deviated from just getting a normal burger.) The smashburger was slightly thicker, but thin enough to get that classic smash flavor. It was a bit juicier and cooked right. I tried some just as the burger and it was good. The toppings are what really give the burger the flavor explosion. Everything there is full of savory goodness. Cheese is king! There is cheddar on the inside (not as prominent), fried garlic cheese curds, and an obscene amount of melted beer cheese on the top of the bun (thus the look) that dripped all over. The waitress gave me extra napkins for a reason. You don’t eat it handheld (unless you are crazy). Though there was so much cheese, it was not overdone. I don’t like extra cheese and this was spot on good for me. The fried onions were a very prominent presence and the crunchy texture was great. The Mac Sauce was bold and good. The bacon was medium thick and just the right amount. The Nantucket bun kind of got lost, which is a shame since I love their burger buns. Everything was mainly in balance, though. I asked “to make it flaming,” but on the side. I ate the first half without and the second half with. The spice was medium hot and FULL of flavor. I really liked the chipotle aioli as it was very creamy and a bold and savory flavor (not just painful heat). It was normally $0.50 overall, but I was charged $0.50 for jalapenos with ground chipotle pepper and $0.50 for the chipotle aioli. The bill came to $19.07 after tax. - Hazelnut Brownie - $7.50: My friend had the brownie and ice cream ($1.50 extra) and said it was very good and a very generous portion. The ice cream really complimented. They also have a Monday special where all their burgers are $5 off all day. I might have to go back for a regular burger (since that is my standard practice). - Fries (comes with the burger): The fries were amazing! Perfectly salted, cooked just right, fairly warm throughout, fluffy interior. The color in the picture is a bit deceiving as they look darker or like sweet potato fries, but these are standard fries and perfectly cooked. - Service: Chipper and very helpful. She took great care to keep our waters full. The meal was delivered fairly quickly after ordering it. When we arrived, the waitress had us wait to make sure of something (unspecified to us) and it took 3-5 minutes to actually get seated (it was not busy). After that, things were smooth, though. - Atmosphere: Inside was very clean and organized. We sat outdoors with wire patio tables and chairs. It was a great day for it and there was a noisy table inside watching sports. There were a couple of brave birds hanging close by. - Conclusion: I would highly recommend their food. FULL of flavor and done well. Visited on a Wednesday at 6pm. - Dietary restrictions: They have gluten-free options, but not much beyond the standard restaurant (salad, shrimp, rice bowl). They didn’t have a gluten-free bun listed, but I didn’t ask either. Looks like they had a black bean burger, though.

Google
Can't say enough great things about this place! We are local so have been here many times and are always very satisfied. This week we had the pleasure of having our work Christmas party at Railtown and it could not have gone better! Katie, the general manager, was BEYOND helpful with the entire process and had fantastic communication. Our servers and bartender Lupe, Alicia and Kylie were EXCELLENT in tending to our large group. Food was hot, quick, and delicious, drinks were excellent, and the atmosphere was great. Very pleased with our experience and the accommodations made by this team!

Google
I was traveling through Grand Rapids and wanted to stop in to see how their beer was. I chose to get a flight to sample a variety of beers. Each one was really good in its own way. I really liked how they gave you their coaster with the choices you picked. I got the baja chicken bowl but it wasn't as good as I hoped. I wouldn't get it again but it was a very good place to try. There were a lot of big groups when we were there, but the server was amazing and attentive to us. You can sit inside or outside on their patio!

Google
This place is awesome. Great blend of brewery and neighborhood bar. Great staff. Great beer, great food. Can not say a negative thing about this place.

Katie M

Google
Beautiful building, friendly hosts, excellent service and waited a reasonable amount of time for a Saturday night. Food was outstanding and the brews were tasty! You’ve gotta stop in! Decided to stop from the hop passport.

Yelp
Business lunch on the patio. Good food and good service. The Mexican street corn chicken sandwich was delicious. Wish I could have had a beer. Will come back next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
We went for our first time today and it is a cool looking spot. My husband enjoyed his beer and we did enjoy our nachos. The corn and pico was fresh and had great flavor. For dinner we ordered a burger and Nashville hot chicken sandwich which literally came out under 3 minutes after we ordered, which was bizarre. I did not like the sandwich, it wasn't spicy and tasted like they put syrup on it. The buns felt stale and there was more friend batter than chicken on the sandwich.

Yelp
Been here a few times and finally writing a review. Let's start with the Heritage Salad. Had this twice with added grilled chicken and it was great. A big salad as well. Railtown burger, death by cheese burger, and the BBQ bacon burger are the next ones. Burgers are done very well. Death by cheese is definitely for a cheese lover. BBQ had a nice fast to it. All were juicy. No dry meat here. Also hade the pretzel plate. Did not care for this at all. Comes more like a loaf and didn't taste like a pretzel that I'm used to. Just too thick for me. Cheese curds were great. Staff was friendly and quick on all visits. The atmosphere was pretty cool. All visits were at lunch time and they able to get us out in a decent time. There are a couple other items that I would like to try so I will be back.

Yelp
The food menu is varied and has lots of tempting options. They have a happy hour includes drink option for $9 so we went for that this time. Pimento cheese was delicious. I would have liked the bread toasted, maybe I can ask for that next time, probably isn't traditional. My Husband had the burger said it was good. I would like to try the build your own Mac and cheese. Prices in general seem lower than some other places. We sat outside and the street noise is pretty constant. Could be the time of the day. The tots and the fries were nothing special I am guessing they might focus specialization in other areas. Service was fine.

Yelp
Having a repair on our Coach and they staff sent us here for lunch while it was getting fixed. What a fabulous place. Sort-of rustic inside and we grabbed a couple of seats at the bar. The Bartender, Heidi, has such a great personality and made everyone feel very welcomed. We had a couple of cold ones and their version of a Cuban sandwich with fries and a side of coleslaw. The Cuban had generous portions of pork, & ham meat, it was very moist and easily enough for us to split. Quite tasty and very filling!

Yelp
Relaxing and friendly this place is a must to visit for good drinks and food. The staff have always been friendly and welcoming. The food has been good each time we have gone. The sliders when paired with the chefs choice in beers have been surprisingly good. The flavors and quality of the foods have been top notch. Definitely try this place out.

Yelp
Went to railtown for lunch with a coworker we split the street corn dip I thought it was very good great flavor my coworker would have liked it better warm. But the star of the afternoon was the Chicken Satay Bahn Mi sandwich!!! It was phenomenal! I do not drive out to 68th street unless for work but I would for this sandwich! The only thing is the menu says peanut sauce and I would have called it a curry sauce as it had no peanut flavor. But I like curry better so no complaints here! Will be back! Only got a pic of the sandwich after a few bites.

Yelp
It is along one of my bike routes. On a hot day I stop for a refreshing beer or two. The food menu is expanding with new additions and the choice of beers fit the mood. The patio is great to sit out friends and the inside feel is improving. Even my wife likes to come here. The service is steady.

Yelp
First time here and will go back. Had a couple beers and all were good. We started with the pretzel and cheese dip. Really good pretzel, and it came with chips to scoop up any cheese left. I had the Death by Cheese burger, not sure how to explain it. But there was so much cheese and deliciousness. Wife had the Buffalo chicken with truffle fries, enjoyed them. And son had the chicken and waffles, which are his thing. He claims top 2 in his life. Tie that all in with cool place, great service and it was a total win for us.

Yelp
Good choice of beer. Some I shake my head when I see what's in some brews, but some of them are my favorites. They have good hamburgers, chicken strips, onion petals, Mac & cheese. I have never had anything bad. Railtown is a great addition to Dutton! We always enjoy it even though we don't drink. I like to sample the beers, but can't drink much because of medication, my husband doesn't like beer, but we both love Railtown!!!

Eddie W.

Yelp
Everything was ok except the bacon on my bbq bacon burger. It was near raw. I pointed it out to the server. She was polite but must have been very busy so she did not do anything about it. No replacement. Did not take it off the check. I did not want to eat a burger that had raw bacon on it. Therefore although everything else was fine I won't be going back. Too many other options in Grand Rapdis/Kentwood area.

Yelp
Along with my coworker cohort, we have been here a few times and I must say- I've been wowed each time. The food is so good and reminiscent of upscale barfood, they have decadent takes on classic favorites from burgers to macaroni and tots! I also love the Asian fusion they feature within the modern american-based menu offered. You'll find ingredients like picked onions, kimchi, gochujang and spiced chili in some of the interesting specials offered here. Often, you'll also find that they change the special offers with the seasons, which is nice. The menu changes often enough to where you are not missing out on a favorite but you stay intrigued to know what's coming next! The portion sizes are also so generous! I come here just for food- but this place also has awesome seasonal offerings for spirits offered and a neat bar table with locally sourced and house-made drinks on-tap!

Yelp
Good food love the outdoor seating. Beer/ cider are good too. The service are great. Good food love the outdoor seating. Beer/ cider are good too. The service are great.

Yelp
I had the pimento dip for an appetizer and the turkey Reuben. Both very good. We had great service. Nice atmosphere too.

Yelp
The parking lot was full -- I got the last spot at 6:30pm on a Thursday, but it was well worth it! I sat at the bar, and although she was super busy, I still got what I needed! The food and beer were amazing; I'll definitely back the next time I'm in the area! I had the Twisted Swisster burger (Swiss, garlic roasted mushrooms, lettuce, dill pickle chips, crispy onion tanglers, and house steak sauce aioli. Served on a Nantucket brioche bun) with the "War Tots," which are loaded up with a peanut satay sauce, mayo, and red onion. Both were perfect, especially when washed down with a couple of the local brews!
google avatar

Amanda M.

Yelp
Really great food and service! The location is gorgeous and plenty of parking! There is a great big bar in the middle and indoor and outdoor seating. The burger was lush and juicy! The tots were cooked to perfection and chicken tenders were crunchy and hot. The ranch was yummy! The truffle fries were so good but for my weak self, a little too spicy with the red pepper. The onion petals were good but again the Cajun ranch was hot (I'm a wimp). We highly recommended!

Yelp
Great food. Reasonably priced, I was pleasantly surprised. Our server was great, fun and attentive. Love the feel inside. Not snooty, but clean and nice.

Rory G.

Yelp
Love this place. Food, beer and atmosphere is great. Wish staff is always friendly and welcoming. So close to home, one of our go to spots.

Bradley B.

Yelp
Service was good, food was not! I ordered the BBQ PO' BOY. It was cold and tasteless. My daughter got the pretzel with beer cheese and the beer cheese was lukewarm. This isn't the first time the food wasn't any good. I have been here multiple times in the past, but I don't think I will be back.

Clark B.

Yelp
Really enjoyed our time and the prices during their outstanding Happy Hour, great food and drink!

Yelp
This was our first stop once we got off the plane in GR. It isn't too far from the airport so makes for a perfect 1st or last stop if checking out breweries. We did the flight with Watermelon Cider, Kiwi Sour, Shadyside IPA, River Trout and Great Stoutsby. The watermelon cider tasted like wine and was a little difficult to drink honestly. Ben said The Great Stoutsby was the best out of his options but wasn't over the moon with the others. Maybe it was just a miss that day. They do have a food menu that offers a range of items that are very different that makes you think they are not sure what type of food they want to offer but we could smell the food from other patrons close by and it did smell very yummy. The proportion size given to them was large so that is good and we both said that we would be willing to give the brewery another try and that next time we would order some food as well.

Jaden B.

Yelp
Food was amazing, menu choices here had me stumped and I had one of the best sandwiches I think ever. Service was great and ambiance was great!
google avatar

Yelp
Another trip to one of our favorite places. They've had some menu updates with new items and they've all been great! Been waiting for the day they would add nachos to their menu since they have delicious tacos, and Mexican poutine (among everything else)... well the wait is over!!! And boy do they deliver: as a nacho connoisseur, I'm labeling these my current favorite in Grand Rapids! The flavor is tasty and delicious, the pairing of pulled pork and chorizo are fantastic and they layer on the toppings so even down to the last bite you are satisfied as no chip goes empty. The entire menu is great: we started with the cheese curds a solid and tasty starter. The burgers, the mixed styles of loaded fries and tots... could go on and on but it's all fantastic. And the drinks and service to pair has never disappointed. You MUST try this place.
google avatar

Julia T.

Yelp
Yummy tacos and beer! Great pit stop on the way through town. It had friendly service and was neat and tidy. I will definitely return if I'm in town again :)

Danielle L.

Yelp
The food was amazing and in abundance. The staff was friendly and personable. It's a cute fun atmosphere. I only gave it 4 stars as it smelled like making beer which I didn't like but it is a brewery so...
google avatar

Ryan P.

Yelp
Good beer. Great outdoor seating. Tasty appetizers. Not too busy in the afternoons. Great for hanging and conversation.

Rachel D.

Yelp
Food is amazing! Customer service was great too. Our waitress was very kind and super helpful. She was very friendly. The environment is cool too. Not too noisy and definitely a place you can look nice or be more casual- up to you. Food was a tad pricy. Burger was so yummy but sides add up. Cheese curds are 6 bucks and an appetizer of them is only $4 more... not to mention you only get a handful of cheese curds for the side. Basically $1 per curd- not worth the extra cost. Overall great experience but watch the price on the sides
google avatar

Kyle V.

Yelp
We left Railtown very impressed! The staff was friendly, dining room was clean, menu was impressive, and the food was delicious! While the menu is the strangest combination of things for a brewery, everything we ordered was fantastic. We started with the Cheese Curds and Street Corn Dip. Both of them were great and the portion was perfect to share. For dinner, I had 3 tacos with a side of tots. My wife and my mom had the Korean Rice Bowl (Bibimbap). My dad had a Chicken Caesar Salad. All of us absolutely loved our food and they were more than accommodating with some requests. My wife is pregnant and they had no problem cooking her egg longer to ensure the yolk wasn't runny as a traditional Bibimbap would have. The tacos were a little runny but that didn't matter. I was on call for work which didn't allow me to try any of their beer but we will definitely be back again! I highly recommend trying this place!

Carly H.

Yelp
So good!! We sat outside, it was so nice and the service was great. Highly recommend to anyone looking for some good food and drinks.
google avatar

Yace H.

Yelp
Been meaning to come here for some time now but with the pandemic and all I finally got to try it recently. People have been raving about the food and I was excited to try it. Guess what? It did not disappoint. Who doesn't love tots? But tots 3 ways? Wow. The burgers were fire too. Can't go wrong with a Nantucket bun. Soaked up all the good juices so it was not hard to eat. Beef was perfect blend. Next time I'll try a bowl or burrito. Brews? I got a flight to try em all out. The stout was good but what stood out was the key lime beer. Unique and sweet but really good. The blueberry wasn't bad either. Will be returning soon. Definitely my new fav brewery on the south side of GR.
google avatar

Amy W.

Yelp
This was our first stop on our way to South Haven. We really liked it here! It had a cool Vive with the roll up type garage doors so it has an indoor outdoor feel. Great outdoor seating area as well. The bartender was pleasant and helpful. She gave us samples. I ended up drinking the blonde which is one of their flagship beers. He got the milk stout. We tried the Pina colada IPA, which was quite good! Buuuuttttt 9.6% abv was a no no at 11:30 am with a full day ahead. We did not eat here. But the food coming out all looked spectacular! I would recommend this place for sure. We grabbed tagabrews and got our hop passports stamped. We were one and done! Back on the road!
google avatar

Burke R.

Yelp
Well the wife and I are on this side of the state working for a couple days and used Yelp to find this place .. it did Not disappoint we had a great waitress/bartender along with lots of flare at food.. highly recommend! (We drove an additional :20 Minutes to get here)

P S.

Yelp
Great service and the food was delicious. Highly recommend the Chicken and Waffle Sandwich.

Kimberly S.

Yelp
Visiting family in Michigan. Came here after a round of golf at Briarwood. Great space for groups or families. Large outdoor seating area with tables or comfortable lounge chairs to relax. Kid friendly. Kids menus with games and crayons. Shady overhang provided a break from the sun. I enjoyed the Bike Ride Blonde pale ale. Veggie burger was a little dry but I ordered a side of ranch to help. Kids enjoyed the tatter tots options and Mac-n-cheese. Good service. Homemade ranch dressing took a little longer to get to the table but it was delicious.

Reginald M.

Yelp
Very nice place and it s convenient place for us . Great staff and easy service . Definitely will return Reg M

Jennah K.

Yelp
I came to Railtown Brewing Co. without reservations and luckily I was able to get a seat in the back by the kitchen and bar. I ordered the chicken and waffle sandwich and I would order again and again. Gouda cheese, maple Dijon sauce, salty bacon and chicken is paired perfectly with sweet flavored Belgian waffles. Really fast service and clean! Enjoy the sunshine, Jennah
google avatar

Yelp
One of our main go to restaurants. Everything is good and service is phenomenal. My new favorite is the ChiliMac... Best ChiliMac this side of the Mississippi!
google avatar

Alejandro S.

Yelp
I went here on the weekend with my wife and we were pleasantly surprised! The Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich was to die for. The meat was succulent and the sandwich was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Perfect delivery! The beers were great and the atmosphere was very pleasing too. The only thing I would complain about was that the service was a bit lacking, but maybe they were understaffed that day. Either way we will be back!

Stacey S.

Yelp
Another delicious meal and beer tonight. Love this place. Fun food and easy going vibe. Staff are super nice and it's a "come as you are" local spot. I got chicken tenders and tots and my husband got the street corn burger tonight. Both were spot on.
google avatar

Logan W.

Yelp
This is the spot to be for outstanding food, fantastic beer, and good times. The jalapeno cream ale was extremely refreshing and the jalah back was exploding with flavor. Every dish ordered was enjoyed by all and do note that the Korean Bowl is quite spicy (although good). Not pictured is a cider my aunt had ordered and she absolutely loved it, "This is probably the best cider I've ever tried" Can't say enough good things about this place, it's phenomenal and I cannot wait to come back soon. Cheers!

Kristin H.

Yelp
Found Railtown through the Yelp app. Looking for lunch while in town dropping off family at the airport nearby. Reviews were good and Railtown didn't disappoint. Variety of beer choices from DIPA to stouts. Had the milk stout and oatmeal stout, both were tasty. As for lunch, husband had the bbq bacon burger and was very happy with it. I ordered the war fries (per Yelp suggestions) and chili. Loved the chili, thick and hearty and war fries were interesting... had a sweet light peanut sauce, chopped onions and a cream possibly sour cream sauce drizzled over.

Kevin S.

Yelp
Good service. Good beer. Good happy hour special. Unassuming and friendly place. Give it a shot!

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Do not adhere to the hours of operation posted. Went there at 9:45 pm been traveling hungry as hell and turned away , sorry kitchen is closing . We'll change it on your website

Scott G.

Yelp
Some great beers, really good food, and it's awesome when Heidi is behind the bar! Two words: Citra Warrior!
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Always wanted to stop in to try the death by cheeseburger or chicken and waffle sandwich. Finally had the chance and tried the spicy death version which was good but obviously messy. Fries were awesome and liked all the options that you can add to them. Cool location
google avatar

Willard A.

Yelp
I like this place. I want to love this place. The menu is missing something. Burgers (check), Tots (check), Pulled pork (check). What's not to like? I don't get it. I'm there and I want to go to town. The beers and the food don't seem to work together. The food has an Asian flair but the beer feels too heavy. The food is really good, the beers are pretty darn good. They just don't seem to pair well.

Joseph C.

Yelp
Everything was great! The service and the food was amazing. The beer was very tasty. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys casual drinking.
google avatar

Marianne G.

Yelp
Well, they don't have food, but you can bring in food or order any food to be delivered. They have a few tv's and they have 4 dart boards. It's a very family-friendly place - there were families there, even late, and they had a selection of board games, some being kids games. The beer: it was pretty darn good. We really enjoyed the stouts. A Peanut Butter one, and a good Milkstout. But naturally, we felt the need to try every beer that they had in the form of a flight! The beers really weren't too bad in cost. We had a good time! It was busy when we got there, but the later it got, it really quickly died off for a Friday, even though they aren't open THAT late.

Eddie R.

Yelp
Food was unique and really tasty! Burgers, Mac n cheese, cheese curds were all awesome. Local root beer was quite good. Expect a very long wait for a table though.
google avatar

Dan J.

Yelp
Went tonight and had to wait a little while for a table which was fine, we grabbed a beverage and sat outside. Got seated and Bronson, our server, came up offering drinks and suggestions of his favorite appetizer which was the Street Corn Dip. Very tasty but a little spicy for my wife's taste ( I ate the rest). Dinner was excellent and the service was very attentive. Like everywhere, you could tell they were short staffed but we relaxed and enjoyed the time to unwind and had a great experience. We need to go there more often!
