Melbourne’s Best Pubs Are What America Needs Right Now | Eater

"A midcentury, time-forgotten pub decorated with Elvis knickknacks and original fittings, offering comforting basics — a roaring fire, unpretentious good food, cheap booze, and easygoing service — like a familiar hug from an auntie." - Lesley Suter

Had an excellent meal here! The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and tender. They also offer a great variety of sides to complement the meal. The service was attentive without being overbearing. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a relaxing spot with delicious food and great hospitality!

Google
Best steak in town!! They have great selection of wine as well as steak. Caramelize carrot is must try for starter. I ordered rump and they cooked it perfectly and goes great with mustard. I will definitely recommend to anyone visiting Melbourne for a great dinner.

Just recently moved to the area and have been trying out all the local pubs. Wednesday steak day and the place was pumping. Restaurant was full, bar area a few seats available yet empty outside. Admittedly it was cool but the sun was out and it's a covered area. For you Melbournites should of been like Summer. Inside the pub was very nice, very pleasant staff but we sat outside. To the food! Orderered the steak, considering it was cheap as chips Steak day. One medium and one medium rare with a mushroom sauce and a brandy peppercorn sauce. The medium rare steak was closer to medium and the medium was closer to medium well, but still nice tasty steak. The sauces were a little on the watery side. The chips/wedges were beautiful but could have been hotter. The salad was well dressed and better than most places that usually just serve green leaves as a salad. Overall for the price ($24), I'd have it again. Definitely will come back to dine in the restaurant section as the Chateaubriand and Fillet Mignon is calling me.

Our final meal in Melbourne last Saturday night was a banger – and a massive shoutout to mate, Tom, for the recommendation (and to me for the hours of obsessive research haha).⁣ ⁣ The Railway Club Hotel @railwayclubhotel was hands down Tom’s best suggestion to date – I’m calling it: the best steak I’ve ever eaten. Full stop.⁣ ⁣ This trip was all about celebrating my birthday with the boys and enjoying one last chill weekend before the big move, and dinner at RCH was the perfect grand finale – especially after catching the absolutely brilliant Beetlejuice musical (seriously, go see it).⁣ ⁣ 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐧-𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧:⁣ ⁣ 🥩 Tom ordered the Cape Grim Porterhouse ⁣ 🥩 Gary went with the Rissoles and Smoked Bacon⁣ ⁣ 🥩 And I devoured the Bass Strait Eye Fillet with their Brandy Peppercorn Sauce – and I swear, it cut like butter and tasted like heaven.⁣ ⁣ If you’re ever in Melbourne, do yourself a massive favour and dine at the Railway Club Hotel. You can thank me later.⁣

The steak was super charcoal-tasted which I loved!!! The steak came with so many complementaries which was impressive! It felt like the entrees and sides was a bit extra lol

Google
Have been here many times. Was a disappointed with the food. Calamari was small for a main and bulked up with roast potatoes. George’s salad was just large slices of partially ripe tomatoes with a small amount of red onion shredded on top. The rainbow trout was supposed to be served with a side, but did not come. Hotel admitted that they had changed the menu to no side but did provide a rocket salad at no charge. The roast potatoes, a speciality, were dry with limited flavour.

What can I say. Fantastic steaks and really good service. Not cheap but oh so worth it.

Google
The steaks were ok considering the price. To be honest. We were expecting better. I’ve had better for a lost less $ Anyway the service and atmosphere were pretty good

Yelp
Raw shrimp from surf and turf. Waited 90 minutes for mains. Even the bread rolls have been dispensed of. Maybe inflation is really biting, apparent with the undercoverage from the wait staff. Maccas might be more in line with expectations

Yelp
I really wanted to have an Aussie steak while staying in Australia. The Railway Club Hotel had great reviews on trip advisor and luckily was close to where we were staying. The best way to get to the restaurant is by car and there are tons of street parking. You could take a tram if you don't have a car. Dinner reservation is a must. It is recommended to book a couple days before, and they do not take any walk-in once they are booked fully. I was debating between Eye Fillet (their Fillet Mignon without bacon-wrap) and Scotch Fillet (Rib Eye without T-bone), but decided to go with 220g (8oz) Eye Fillet. My steak was perfectly cooked medium rare as I ordered and the meat was very tnder. I ordered a side of garlic and truffle oil sauce and it went well with my steak. They do bring out horse radish and 3 different mustards free of charge. It was bit surprising Aussies use mustard for steak but it was very good. Every steak comes with thick cut chips (they mean fries) and was sooooo good! I loved them as much as I loved the steak. My husband's salmon was bid too bland but surely generous portioned with two huge jumbo shrimps. Their price is very reasonable for the quality and quantity. I would definitely come back here if I was in Melbourne again.

Yelp
Honestly, it doesn't matter when I turn up here this place is literally packed. I guess that isn't a bad thing for the owners. In fact I suspect that it is a great thing. As for me, I tend to like to be able to find a seat as opposed to milling around in a crowded room full of people that I seriously do not know. Sure, they have an outdoor area, but being out there on a wet and dreary day is hardly my definition of a good time.

Yelp
My director being a foodie like me selected this restaurant aka pub aka historic establishment because it has been voted Melbourne's 4th best on TripAdvisor. We were a group of seven here on a Tuesday evening for dinner and golly was it packed on school night. The patrons were mainly families. The venue is located in a residential area and close to many other pubs. It's quite cozy inside with a fireplace. Round tables and sturdy chairs They have an extensive wine list. No cocktails. The food menu includes steak with many kinds of sauces , which is what they are known for. There is a vegetarian tofu yellow curry for the vegan/vegetarian inclined. Everyone ordered steak, but me. The Steak comes with hand cut chips and you don't get much. My dining companions devoured their steaks. My salmon fillet was quite bland despite dousing it in their basil mayo. The cous cous salad is below average. Basically just cous cous with raisins For entrees, we had delicious mussels that came with the softest, butteriest delicious bread ever. The pate was truly the best I've had. Watch out Heston meat fruit. You basically get five pieces of calamari which is disappointing in the calamari entree. For desserts, between us we had the strawberry mess which come with balsamic ice cream (quite delicate), the chocolate fondant with salted caramel, the churros with too much sweetness and bad quality milk chocolate dip. The sticky date pudding and the gingerbread bread and butter pudding with a bite of honeycomb and honeycomb ice-cream. Everyone at the table advised against the bread and butter pudding, but it was truly sublime. The hint of ginger, the sponginess of the pudding, the not overly sweet honeycomb ice-cream, the delicious poached pinky pear and the crunchy bite of the honeycomb made it a 5 star dish Quick and efficient service Amex accepted

Yelp
I couldn't leave Australia without sampling a big old steak in what I was assured was a decent pub and I certainly wasn't disappointed. If you are a sporting (mainly horse racing fan) you will love the decor however if you are a fan of red meat and wine as well you will almost be in heaven! Everything about the experience was superb. The service was fantastic but not too pushy and there was even an opportunity to check out all of the cuts in the cold storage. For starter I had the sharing platter which consisted of salt & pepper squid, skinless fillet sausages and crispy prawns, all of which were surprisingly good however the main event surpassed it all. I had the opportunity to try both the scotch fillet and the porterhouse. Both were cooked to perfection and incredibly tasty and the accompanying chips were of the home cooked variety and not too greasy. This was all accompanied with a Shiraz which was incredibly good value. If somewhere in the UK could provide the same level of food for the same price (around £90) I would pack my bags and move in! Definitely recommended if you are in the area.

Yelp
At $62 you'd expect a porterhouse, cooked rare to melt in your mouth. My jaw muscles got fatigued trying to chew the rubber I was served. Others on my table had similar experience. I blame the chef as the meat looked pretty good before it was cooked. Lift your game!

Yelp
Ate here today for lunch with my husband, 2 year old daughter and mother in law. It was superb. The service was faultless. The staff were so friendly and went out if their way to make sure our daughter was happy. The food was great. My husband had the rib eye and cleaned the bone. I had the rissoles and the house smoked bacon was something else. My mother in law had the chicken Parma and said it was really tender and the house chips were fresh and not frozen I felt the price was very reasonable too. Will definitely go back

Yelp
This review is about their Thursday steak night. They do not take bookings and their $14.50 steak special is only valid in the bar area and outside tables along the sidewalk. The bar area is rather small and gets very loud. I do not recommend this space for groups larger than 4. Aside from the atmosphere, we all enjoyed our meals. I was very impressed with the quality of the cuts and how evenly cooked all of our steaks were. The think cut wedges were also well seasoned and delicious. Great value for a good steak night. (Pro tip: arrive before 6pm to get a $5 happy hour wine!)

Yelp
I prefer the casual approach and prices of the front bar & outdoor eating area. I have eaten at the Railway's dining room countless times over the last 10 years and the quality of the food has always been exceptional and very consistent. However, what I have noticed is that the pricing has become too excessive for the venue. The dining room is typical old style pub - exposed brick, sporting memorabilia and fire places. There are also TVs showing sporting events which you can bet on from the TAB machine. The dining room is very well frequented and you will need to book for Friday lunch and Saturday evenings. There is full table service in the dining room. The service is prompt and knowledgeable. There is a great roasts, seafood and dessert buffet every year for the Melbourne Cup which I highly recommend. It is amazing value and such great quality. Due to the increasing prices in the dining room we have started to migrate to the outside seating if we need our fix of the Railway. it is largely the same menu at significantly reduced prices. i love the fish and chips - they are exactly the same as in the dining room but around $10 or $12 less. There are also great nightly deals. Whilst there is no table service, I have never had to wait to put in my order and the bar staff are very friendly. They are also experts at remembering your drink order. The front bar itself is a bit blokey as the punters club operates from here but the customers are always friendly. There are a number of tables with umbrellas on the footpath which is the perfect setting for a relaxing, casual drink after work and of course some food if you're hungry. The North Port tram stop for the 109 tram is a stones throw away.

Yelp
Wow, wow and wow, my first time here, what with the #109 tram stop virtually at its door, the great area it is in, you walk in and what a buzz. We got there at 1pm, lucky I booked as it was packed, the vibe was amazing, we were greeted and taken to our table, it was great to see the maitre de realise that we were two larger guys, 6'4 etc, and that the 'love nest' looking table for a romantic lunch was not applicable for us so she led us to a larger table right opposite the kitchen where the devine steaks are displayed. OMG what a display of fine meat. Great wine list, and of course we went for the steaks, cooked to perfection, great vegie sides and creamy mash. The mustards were amazing as was the wine list. Good cold beers to start and we had an amazing meal. For non meat eaters the menu caters for you too. We retired to the front bar and this was great too a little less formal but not too casual. I normally do not like pub TAB's as I do not gamble, but this was fun for my mate who was treating me to lunch today and he recouped his offer. Beers super cold and as for staff same friendly service. Happy hour is a real happy hour $4 wines, $3 pots, bar snacks brought out 5-6pm were plentiful and a nice treat of cooked platters, so of course we stayed until 6pm. A great day overall adn well worth visiting for the day....

Yelp
The first time I came here I had asked someone to recommend a place that was a pub but secretly fancy to appease both my pub-loving family and my desire to not eat junk. Would I get booted out of Australia if I confessed that I really don't like pubs? Shameful I know...but eating well at a pub is so hard because typically everything on the menu that isn't an oversized cheese-laden parma and chips probably sucks. So it's easy for me to overlook spots like Railway Club Hotel. Railway Club Hotel is divided into two areas; the sticky-carpet front bar with classic pub meals and beers, with a white linen tablecloth restaurant out the back. Hence, secretly fancy. The walls are covered in sports paraphernalia and it seems like the last place I would want to hang out, but for special occasions with the family this is such a winner. I've been a few times with them over the years now and I always wonder why I don't come here more often. Steak lovers rejoice. They have an amazing selection of steaks, including the ability to select your own piece from the cabinet. Carnivores of the family satisfied beyond belief. A restaurant claiming Melbourne's Best Steaks is not about to stuff them up anytime soon. The restaurant offers both their dining menu and pub classics, so parma lovers can still get their fix at either side of the place. On my most recent visit, I got to enjoy a delicately portioned crispy skinned barramundi fillet with delicious cauliflower side salad. Much to the joy of my partner who wasn't able to attend but is now already hassling me about when we can go back so he can eat a steak larger than his head.

Yelp
I don't want to tell you about this place - Melbourne's second best steak joint (vlados - twice the price ) great staff - can't find the place and great wine list. Stick to the steaks and a few sides will do. Brilliant experience but book

Yelp
Great Menu !! This is a must for anyone wishing to try a wonderful steak dinner The rib eye is phenomenal, highly recommend The only issue I would have is that, it can get a little crowded and then it gets fairly noisy.
google avatar

Craig B.

Yelp
Great Food! Service was rude and pushy and could careless about your experience. I wouldn't go back due to the rude service and that's sad because the kitchen did an amazing job.

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday afternoon with 7 other people, two couples with small kids. It's the perfect pub for groups (we noticed many other groups with children as well). The food is good, had the bangers and mash and the burgers looked tasty and had brie in them, mmm. It's quite a large place with very attentive and friendly servers/staff.

Yelp
Great menu. Classics. Service is attentive. Downstairs is a large dining room although somewhat noisy. More intimate upstairs. Lovely food worth seeking this place out. Although not too much choice in glasses of wine.

Yelp
Best steaks in Melbourne. It is a little hard to find but the steaks are worth it. Great service, & really good raw product. I have been here at least 10 times and I have enjoyed each meal. They don't rush you out - it takes quite a while to get through their huge steaks
