10 of the Best Doughnuts in the East Bay | Eater SF

"It looks like an old school hole-in-the-wall, but Rainbow Donuts also makes festive glazes like matcha and nutella; fries up colorful cake doughnuts like purple ube and red velvet; and even decorates doughnuts like unicorns." - Ellen Fort

I was staying at the Holiday Inn Express around the corner and came here looking for an evening snack/dessert and was pleasantly surprised they still had a decent selection near the end of the day. I got a rainbow donut and a raspberry filled donut. Both were well done. I definitely enjoy fresh donuts and just the right amount of sugar coating/frosting. The interior isn’t the best for hanging out but a couple doors down is high wire coffee that pairs nicely… definitely recommend if you’re in the area!

Google
Cake within the donut is too notch. Icing not too sweet. Definitely among the best donuts I’ve had and I’ve had a lot.

I've been working in the area recently and heard great things about this place especially because they have vegan donuts. I'm not big on sweets but when i do indulge, vegan is the way to go for me! Decided to pop in this morning for a breakfast option -in addition to a WIDE VARIETY of donuts, they also make breakfast sandwiches. Your choice of breakfast meat along with egg & cheese or for the non-meat eaters egg & cheese which was my choice. You can get your sammie on a bagel, croissant or gasp- even a glazed donut! BE STILL MY HEART! I opted for the flaky croissant- did not disappoint. They cook it to order and it wasn't too long of a wait considering there was a huge line forming right at 9 am. They are consistently busy which is a good sign. Check them out!

Order - Two ube chocolate donuts. Texture - Typical, slightly chewy, sponge almost. It was good. Taste - Chocolate flavor wasn’t that deep and the ube was also on the light side. Mostly sugary as most donuts are. Price - $1-2 ish dollars per donut. Not what I’m looking for personally but it’s not a bad choice if you’re looking for the classic donut.

Google
Stopped by Rainbow Donuts on Monday morning, and even though they were a little busy, I had a great experience! They have an amazing selection of unique and fun donuts. I picked up a dozen for my coworkers, and they were a hit—so tasty and perfectly balanced, not overly sweet. My personal favorite was the blueberry cake donut—absolutely delicious! I also grabbed a coffee, and everything was reasonably priced for the area. The service was excellent too—the lady who helped me was super attentive and friendly. Great combination of price, quality, and service! Definitely coming back.

Google
The best tasting, and most amazing looking donuts anywhere! These people make edible art in a round format. Service is personal and quick. Sandwiches are made to order any way you want them. They also deliver to businesses. I've been coming here for years and it's great to have a small family shop continue to operate right in our neighborhood.

Google
We got there at noon-ish on Saturday and they still had such an impressive selection of donuts. We got the red velvet, vegan blueberry, glazed, and sprinkles donuts. No other customers were present so it was a fast visit. When we later opened the box inside the car, we saw at least half a dozen donut holes thrown in! Yay!! The donuts were fresh and super flavorful. The inside is very cute with a lot of greenery.

Google
This neighborhood donut shop offers both traditional and creatively modern flavors. If you like the “old fashioned” then your in for a treat. They had chocolate, maple, glazed, and plain flavors. If you want something new, I highly recommend the Crodonut. It is a combination of a croissant and a donut, and it is delicious. If you can turn your hungry eyes away from the display case, I encourage you to read the writings on the wall. They are amusing. And a tip, there isn’t a parking lot. Only metered street side parking. Which is a bummer. You literally have to pay to park in order to get some donuts. Or, you can go to Addison street, which is the next cross street and look for some free parking along the curb. Oh well. Whatever your solution. Still worth a visit. The maple old fashioned was solid. And the maple crodonut was life changing.

Yelp
What a cute bakery! Finally got to try this shop for national donut day and I was so pleasantly surprised. There was such a large amount of variety, it was almost too hard to make a choice. I went around 6:30 am, so I got to see the full menu. Everything was so fresh and it smelled so good in there. The donuts were just being made, you could see the icing still needing to firm up! I ended up going with a lemon blueberry donut and a creme brûlée (one of my favorite desserts!) Both were so delicious! The woman helping me also threw in a free chocolate cake donut for national donut day, which was really nice of her :) I will definitely be coming back to try more of their extensive menu!!

Yelp
Such cute donuts here! Happened to walk by with a friend so we stopped in. I loved the unicorn donuts -- those would have totally been my go-to as a kid! All of them were so beautifully decorated. We got Ube Crumb Donuts, and they were so good! A gorgeous purple color with crumb coating. They were so soft yet still had that cake donut texture, and the ube flavor actually came through! Deeply impressed. There's some tables and seating inside, though I struggled to find any napkins. There was no line when we were there at 12:30 PM on a Thursday, but I figure the mornings must be busier because not all of the different donut varieties were there. The lady serving us was efficient yet patient, allowing my friend time to decide what she wanted. Would definitely like to try their raised donuts next time!

Yelp
Our new favorite donut spot in the Bay! Beautiful design, tons of choices for all the types of donut eaters, plenty of seating. Great service as I was getting donuts and they suggested half a dozen would be less which I appreciated. If you like donuts, just go!
google avatar

Yelp
We come here a few times because they have donut holes and plain donuts for me. Ordering and service is usually fast when I've come on the weekends. Location is good and I usually find parking nearby. Some seating area if you wanted to eat there.
google avatar

Joyce L.

Yelp
Honestly, I'm not a fan of cake style donuts, I'm more of a raised donut kinda person. Unfortunately, it seems cake donuts are the . Regular or vegan, I just haven't liked them. They're heavy, oily and not good. I have no idea what Rainbow does, but their vegan donuts are surprisingly good!! My brother got me 3 for my birthday and I wasn't sure what to expect. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised! I hope to stop in and try them again in person!

Yelp
Very cute little donut shop. Stopped by around 11am on Sunday and we picked a couple donuts and they gave my 3.5 year old a free donut hole. The workers were very nice. I'm not the biggest donut person and I love an egg bagel so I tried the sausage egg and cheese on a jalapeño bagel and it was delicious. I'm sure my toddler will be asking to come back often!
google avatar

Yelp
First off the service here is immaculate. Everyone is SO nice and helpful. It feels like they hook me up everyday, but I think that's actually just their incredibly adorable prices. And I'm talking about fire deals for every incentive donuts. The ambiance is soo cute and honestly comforting since pink is my fav color. Donut wise- the cake ones are my fav. Today I noticed they make jelly/custard filled donut wholes for $1. They also have a creme brulee donut, ube donut, cute little designed donuts etc... go check them out!
google avatar

Marc B.

Yelp
Stocked up at Rainbow Donuts before a long drive. I enjoyed my toasted cheese bagel with cream cheese. Then I got three donuts, all of which were good. 1. Creme Brulee donut - A couple of bites before you get to the custard center, but when you did, the combo of custard and brulee top was exceptional! This was my fav. Very sweet, as to be expected. 2. Smores donut - a chocolate donut with graham cracker crumbs on top plus a big marshmallow in the middle. 3. Fruity Pebbles donut - some sort of a glaze with Fruity Pebbles on top. Maybe dip the donut further in that sticky glaze and allow the fruity pebbles go down the side or even all around? The donut a bit was too big and fluffy for the toppings.

Yelp
I've never had a bad donut here...do bad donuts exist? Yes! But not here. Is it a foodie spot? Not really. Anything over the top amazing? Not quite there BUT I can honestly say that when it comes to Donut shops they offer variety, customer service, hygiene and a smile. Flavors are consistent. Rainbow has your ordinary variety but also speciality flavors occasionally like Ube or cereal topped donuts. My son's go to sport for decorative donuts that resemble unicorns and pandas. This is the second year he has made me custom order donuts here depending on his ever changing obsession. Last year was Pokemon, this year it was Roblox. Rainbow is a cute shop right on San Pablo off of University. Shop is clean, a few tables, a self serve fridge with beverage offerings. The actual donuts are house in clear glass, well lit, really clean and well labeled. Overall black and white Decorative with Pink, few cute sayings on walls. Staff has always been friendly, often gives my son an extra treat. Answers questions and when I had questions they could not answer they were kind enough to place owner on the phone. A Berkeley staple. Solid shop and people. Definitely a recommendation for custom donuts. We will continue to gladly go back time after time.

Yelp
I used to love this place and have been a handful of times now, but today when I went in for a breakfast sandwich, they overcharged me $5.71. The price on their menu says $10, so when the screen said $15.71, I asked if it's really $15.71 for just the sandwich. The lady looked annoyed and curtly said "yes." Later, I checked on their online ordering system and the price was still $10. I'm really disappointed that she didn't even bother to check if there were any mistakes and instead charged me the incorrect price
google avatar

Yelp
Super cute donut shop! Wow, I was impressed by the fresh, fluffy and delicious donuts. I wasnt a fan of the Matcha Hojicha glaze but I will say the donut itself was really delicious. I imagine all the other flavors would be divine. The donut is fried to perfection. The crumb was flaky, buttery and had the slightest chew. I'll come back here fosho

Yelp
I was in the area and my son wanted a doughnut. I found this place on yelp. There's only street parking here. It's a little shop but there's a few tables. There is a pretty good selection they do sell out of some flavors. There was a lot of different fun flavors. The price was okay. The doughnuts were pretty good but very sweet. My son really liked it. We overall had a good experience.
google avatar

Sherelle L.

Yelp
The sign outside caught my eye instantly ! Donuts are bae and I had to indulge. The price point on these were not that bad, I got an old fashioned donut and 1/2 dozen donut holes for $4. The donut holes were my favorite super fluffy and the perfect amount of glaze. I decided to enjoy my donuts there and they have a good amount of seating for a donut shop! Go ahead and grab your sugar filled carb lol
google avatar

Laura J.

Yelp
My review is solely based on a Door Dash delivery. We got a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese Croissant and half a dozen donuts. SO. GOOD. The croissant was flaky and chewy. I usually have to add some seasonings to my breakfast sandwiches and this sandwich did not need anything! Perfect amount of flavor and portion size. The donuts were great too! Soft and fluffy, not overly too sweet. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
They did such an amazing job with my Gabby's dollhouse themed donuts for my 5 year old's bday party.
google avatar

Danielle K.

Yelp
Ordered from DoorDash and had them delivered for a sleepover. Excellent donuts - nice crisp. Very well designed and packaged. Only criticism is that the One Dozen Specialty Mix was more of a normal mix. The specially designed mix was fabulous and a real show stealer!

Yelp
I've been here many times and love coming here for good doughnuts. The shop has a wide variety of classic to gourmet doughnuts to choose. My favorites are the vegan Ube and the maple bacon. The shop also has coffee and other various drinks along with breakfast sandwiches and bagels. The staff are friendly and happy to answer any questions about what they have there. The shop is small but has its own personality. Recommend for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Love their decorated donuts! We ordered their theme donuts for a child's birthday party: panda, rainbow clouds and unicorn. Alan was very helpful with the correspondence of this special order. Everything went well and the kids loved the donuts! The donuts were a great hit at the party. Thinking of ordering more theme donuts in the future for parties. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Sarah D.

Yelp
Party Favorite! My son hates cake so donuts it was. They were super helpful and accommodating. They even decorated a special donut with a character he loves. The flavors, colors and combinations were perfect for the birthday party!
google avatar

Yelp
I didn't think donuts could be this good. I was not hungry not even really craving a donut, yet each one was better than the last. The first was amazing to start also! Workers are pretty cool and helpful ambiance is typical donut store clean enough to sit and enjoy a donut, but not overdone so people are packing in.
google avatar

Jack L.

Yelp
Light fluffy delicious donuts... mmm... donuts... *drool* This place is fantastic for potlucks or parties as they are always a hit and fit perfectly with coffee. We picked some up on a Sunday afternoon and got a few bonus donuts too! *score*

Koala909 C.

Yelp
Highly recommend going early. Went here in the afternoon and most of the fancy/pretty donuts were already sold. Got a half dozen of various donuts. Some were GREAT but a couple were already stale a bit. I think their donuts were nicely priced! Fancy but not overpriced. Love the location and love their kind service. I would try again in the morning next time.

Yelp
I am a sucker for donuts and unique ones too. The ones here are soft and fluffy, and they always have fun and unique flavors! My favorites have been the smore, classic maple, unicorn/rainbow ones. They're so yummy I highly recommend!

Yelp
Dry , dry, dry. I placed a pick up order the day before I needed to pick up and the donuts tasted like they made them the day I placed the order. No way they made those the day of. Customer service horrible when your asking for your money back. I would never purchase donuts from here again.

Yelp
Those who follow my reviews know that I'm not a fan of donuts. I tend to lean more toward the savory than the sweet. But in a Yelp conversation w/ my friend Sadig, the subject of cronuts came up. He recommended I try them, so I did a Yelp search and discovered that Rainbow Donuts sold them. I decided to stop by on my errands today after I left Three Stone Hearth. It's right next door to Babette's and I was lucky enough to find parking almost directly in front. I walked in and there was only one other customer, a man w/ a bicycle who arrived just before I did. He encouraged me to go first because he was buying a dozen. I asked the woman behind the counter if they had cronuts and she said they did, chocolate and maple. When I repeated that, she thought I was ordering one of each, so I ended up w/ two to try, or so I thought. When I got home after completing my errands, I discovered the nice woman had also included a cake-like donut w/ what looked like confetti inside. So nice! I cut all three in half in order to taste them all. Assuming I would like the donut least, I started there, but it wasn't too sweet, w/ a very light glaze. Next I tried the chocolate glazed cronut and then the maple one. The texture was interesting and pleasing, but both the glazes were too sweet for me. I'm guessing cronuts are all glazed. I will probably scrape off the glaze on them when I have the other halves tomorrow. Since the only donuts I like are the ones, like unglazed old fashioneds and buttermilk bars, that are not so sweet, the one she gave me suited my taste. I rarely eat donuts, so I have no idea when I'll be back, but my experience today was very good.

Yelp
Best donuts ever!!!! I recommend the donut sliders with sausage egg and cheese! So delicious! My mom and I are OBSESSED! The unicorn poop is also my favorite donut there. The French crullers are delicious. The people that work there are very kind and provided great service plus the building is SO CUTE
google avatar

Yelp
I was in the area of Rainbow Donuts this morning and I decided to try them out for the first time. I was sold the moment I saw that they offer cronuts! Those are my favorite! I bought a selection of 6 different donuts (including three different types of cronuts) to bring home to the fam. We all loved them! Perfect texture, moistness, & flavor! Rainbow Donuts offers an impressive variety of donuts, too. My son really enjoyed the maple bacon one & my Mom loved her maple cronut. The Ube crumb one was yummy and I can't wait to try the Crème Brûlée one later today. The customer service was welcoming and courteous. Great vibe in the bakery, too. I'll definitely be a repeat customer!

Yelp
Got food delivered so cannot speak to the in-person experience, but felt compelled to leave a review bc of the fantastic egg sandwich. Got a bacon/egg/cheese on a bagel--often bagel sandwiches are overly toasted so they're hard to bite into, or have measly fillings for the size of the bread, but this one was hot, soft but not soggy and still sturdy, and had lots of everything. Well-seasoned, well-wrapped, super happy.
google avatar

Cece C.

Yelp
came here this morning and bought a few items and when i got to work i realized they hadn't given me my donuts so i went after my shift and there was a rude employee who told me she didn't know and that it was the morning shifts fault which yes i get it but she literally just walked away and ignored me.
google avatar

Autumn H.

Yelp
if you're looking for solid, old-school donuts, and even some with some modern unique flavors, a display case with so many options you don't even know what to pick, then rainbow doughnuts is your spot. I also saw they had some breakfast sandwiches and beverage menu options, though I haven't tried any, I imagine it be a good place to stop to get a quick breakfast bagel or croissant. That said we all know why we're coming here. It's that old-school feeling of grabbing a giant cardbox full of way too many donuts.
google avatar

Simba G.

Yelp
Ordered a dozen donuts and a donut with a design. My job absolutely liked the donuts. I will be buying donuts for work once a month. I will return soon. Like the creativity of the donuts at this location.
google avatar

Mitch P.

Yelp
Solid donuts! Great variety. Open for an after dinner dessert. Will be back to try some additional flavors.
google avatar

John F.

Yelp
This was my first time here, and I regretted not coming sooner. This shop has so many unique donuts, and each one I had was soft and delicious. The staff is helpful and friendly, and the ambiance is chill. I can't wait to return, especially since it's close to home.
google avatar

Jillian P.

Yelp
Classic donut spot. Ordered a dozen donuts to bring to a work event, and they were a hit! Light, fluffy and sweet. What else can you ask for? Great spot to pick up something sweet to start your day.

Yelp
Donut sleep on this place lol ok enough with the bad dad jokes. This is go to donut shop in the area. My daughter and I LOVE this place! The customer service is always outstanding and the donuts are always so fresh. Two years I've used them for custom orders for my baby since we are donut fanatics lol. Each year they have done GREAT work. This year I place a custom order super last min when I found out my daughter's birthday was national donut day and they came through with the perfect custom donut. It's cute in there and your regular donut shop decor. My daughter even asked for gift cards here lol. Love this place and glad it's right here in our neighborhood.

Yelp
One of the great things about being a Yelper is that you get to eat things like donut breakfast sandwiches in the name of science, or at least for the greater good of other Yelpers. That's how I justified ordering two such sandwiches (via Uber Eats) from Rainbow Donuts. The two sandwiches in question: Bacon Egg Slider and Sausage Egg Slider (with cheese). First, the bacon egg slider without cheese. The sandwich is a glazed raised donut (like a Krispy Kreme) sliced in two, with a filling of bacon and scrambled egg. As a huge fan of the combination of savory and sweet, this was right up my alley. The amount of bacon was generous and crispy and smoky. I purposely didn't get cheese on this one, thinking the bacon would be salty enough to appease my savory tastebuds, and I was right, but this was just a personal preference. Next, the sausage egg slider with cheese. OK, first, I think they forgot the cheese. So, this review is without cheese now (can we have a moment of silence for the forgotten cheese, please). I had decided to add cheese to this one because I thought it might need a little added salt if the sausage wasn't very salty. The sandwich is the same concept as the other slider but with a sausage patty. Although the sausage patty wasn't too bad, it definitely could have used the cheese. The Bacon Egg Slider was the winner for me. But can you really go wrong when there are donuts involved? You can get this sandwich with just egg or with just egg and cheese as well. If you like savory and sweet, any one would be a good choice. The sandwiches were $6.60 without cheese and an extra $0.50 with cheese on Uber Eats. I've heard Rainbow Donuts also does a mean apple or blueberry fritter, which I can't wait to try. How about a breakfast sandwich made with these fritters, Rainbow Donuts?

Yelp
My sister and I were looking for a spot close-ish to my house in Richmond...as you may know there are probably closer spot haha if you know any goods ones please let me know let me know. My sister and I walked in and we were so happy there was still a great selection of donut options left over. My sister and I ordered the following donuts: Matcha, pumpkin spice, confetti, oreo, and more that I can't remember haha the match and pumpkin spice donuts were not that good. The one that I really liked was the confetti donut. We ordered two Vietnamese Ice Coffee. My sister and I were going to get different drinks but the Vietnamese Ice Coffee looked so good! The coffee was from Orbit Coffee in Oakland. When I saw that I was very happy because I always wanted to try their coffee. We also ordered two sausage, cheese, and egg on a plain and cheese bagel. I thought the breakfast sandwich were okay but nothing special.
google avatar

Nina P.

Yelp
Finally, a place that does donuts properly! All the other donut shops we've been to seem to mostly sell cake donuts which I hate as they're usually soggy and too moist. This place has airy, fluffy donuts (as well as cake donuts if that's your style). The horchata donut was delicious with the right amount of glaze and sugar. The blueberry lemon was a bit "fruit loopy" in terms of the glaze, but again the donut part was delicious. Cronut - very decadent, delicious, but I wouldn't order again as I think they really shine in their regular donuts and I'd like to try more of those. Breakfast sandwich was fantastic, the jalapeño bagel was probably the best West-coast bagel we've had to date. We'll definitely stop by here again.
google avatar

Kalkidan A.

Yelp
The cronut were the best thing they had. The glazed donuts were also okay. I was pretty disappointed with the pistachio donuts, it didn't taste anything like pistachios. It just tasted like sugar with green icing on it. Same with the rainbow donut, it looks eye catching but pretty flat with the flavor, just a regular donut. My 7 year old had their plain cake donut and didn't like it, I tasted it and it was off. I couldn't really pinpoint it but it was just dense and flavorless. All in all okay place.
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
I was going to a potluck with several people are donut lovers. I live in San Francisco, and most of the people had said that Bob's donuts are the best. That being said, I went to rainbow donuts and I was amazed by the amount of choice one has including vegan donuts. I bought a total of 18 donuts and they were absolutely delicious. Well I only had one but people at the party said they were the best donuts that they ever had. It was definitely worth the trip, especially going over on public transit to Berkely from San Francisco for these amazing donuts.
google avatar

Scott C.

Yelp
I had a nice greeting even though it was early in the morning. The donut selection was fun with all my favorites. I had a cinnamon roll with crumbles. It was perfect! The coffee was good too.
google avatar

Shannon Z.

Yelp
Rainbow Donuts is special, and they have been open since 1985. I have been trying really hard to not eat too many sweets, so as a special treat my dining partner and I decided to try to split a doughnut. But of course we couldn't agree on a single flavor and bought 3 doughnuts; the lady behind the counter was so nice and gave a handful of additional free doughnuts - this was a mixed blessing but I am grateful for her kindness. Their speciality are the amazing cake doughnut varieties and delicious fritters. I generally dislike cake doughnuts due to their density, but the ones here have changed my mind because they are somehow made light and airy. I was less impressed with the raised/glazed doughnut varieties here. The ube cake doughnut was a standout and excellent! They also offer vegan doughnuts, but no gluten-free.
google avatar

Nadav M.

Yelp
The place seems very open and has plenty of food despite some of the minutes left of the day when they were about to close. Loads of sunlight and fun and modern decor to add to the Berkley character, or so I felt. The service was very friendly and direct. The menu is a bit everywhere but if going for doughnuts you just point, read, and pick. They have a huge plethora of options, from mini doughnuts, Timbits (doughnut holes), big fritters, colourful contemporary pastries, and the like. I believe the blueberry fritter and the one with bacon were my favourites. First time having something out of the ordinary like a piece of meat on a pastry. I guess I could say I tried it here and tell others about a similar experience. I enjoyy the exterior decor as well. AC Transit buses 72, 72M, 72R, and 51B take you here with easy access. The nearest BART station is Downtown Berkeley and get the 51B towards the Marina on University Ave
google avatar

Timothy L.

Yelp
Oh, hello to the Rainbow! I do not live in Berkeley, but whilst wandering one day I bought a dozen on impulse. Cause my wife was mad at me, and I needed a peace offering. Such a delight! The blueberry-lemon were divine. Inventive flavors and well executed classics. To make it even better, it has that family business feel that only adds to the charm. We liked them so much we came back together another day and were equally pleased. Sadly we got so excited about eating them I forgot to take pictures of the actual donuts.
google avatar

Queena Z.

Yelp
They have a large variety of donuts here! I try to be healthy and get their plain bagel with cream cheese for breakfast instead of donuts. Their freshly toasted bagels are delicious.
google avatar

Divin V.

Yelp
Great Vegan Donuts. Love it! Strawberry and Blueberry one was delicious. All of my family members enjoyed their donuts
google avatar

Yelp
OMG there doughnuts is wayyyyy better then Voodoo donuts unbelievable GOODNESS...especially the doughnut sliders so soft sweet/salty and all that goodness WOW just WOW

Yelp
My daughters and I absolutely love this shop. The different assortments of doughnuts, colors, shapes, and freshness, What more could you ask for! The service is always inviting and helpful. They have many other things to offer on their menu, we haven't tried yet, but we will. When you go inside it's always welcoming, clean, and inviting for you to just sit and enjoy a bite or beverage. We'll be back soon.
