Those who follow my reviews know that I'm not a fan of donuts. I tend to lean more toward the savory than the sweet. But in a Yelp conversation w/ my friend Sadig, the subject of cronuts came up. He recommended I try them, so I did a Yelp search and discovered that Rainbow Donuts sold them. I decided to stop by on my errands today after I left Three Stone Hearth. It's right next door to Babette's and I was lucky enough to find parking almost directly in front.
I walked in and there was only one other customer, a man w/ a bicycle who arrived just before I did. He encouraged me to go first because he was buying a dozen. I asked the woman behind the counter if they had cronuts and she said they did, chocolate and maple. When I repeated that, she thought I was ordering one of each, so I ended up w/ two to try, or so I thought.
When I got home after completing my errands, I discovered the nice woman had also included a cake-like donut w/ what looked like confetti inside. So nice! I cut all three in half in order to taste them all. Assuming I would like the donut least, I started there, but it wasn't too sweet, w/ a very light glaze. Next I tried the chocolate glazed cronut and then the maple one. The texture was interesting and pleasing, but both the glazes were too sweet for me. I'm guessing cronuts are all glazed. I will probably scrape off the glaze on them when I have the other halves tomorrow. Since the only donuts I like are the ones, like unglazed old fashioneds and buttermilk bars, that are not so sweet, the one she gave me suited my taste. I rarely eat donuts, so I have no idea when I'll be back, but my experience today was very good.
