How Austin Restaurant Workers Fed the City During Texas’s 2021 Winter Storm Uri - Eater Austin

"Katrina Townsend (Emergency Operations): We were covering the Palmer Events Center. At some points, there were about 500 people there. The restaurants delivering for us didn’t have trucks big enough to carry those 500 meals, so they would show up with 200 meals and then go back to pick up the rest. Some of the people [staying in the center] became adversarial because they were fighting for supplies. Raising Cane’s saved us — I think the manager was stuck there, and I would order 500 meals from her at a time." - Erin Russell

Google
I mean it’s Cane’s. What’s not to like? This location can be a little busy and parking fills up fast, however, the inside is very spacious and there’s always plenty of seating available. Staff are very good about flipping tables to ensure there’s always a place to sit since this is a very high trafficked location being so close to campus. The chicken is always good and their honey mustard sauce is my favorite! The service is always fast too whether you go through drive thru or dine in.

Day 3 of jury duty and I had an hour and 15 minutes and a block away raising Cane's I didn't have any expectations different from what I normally experience at raising Cane's but today was exceptionably surprising. I ordered my normal caniac and every piece of chicken I received was the biggest piece of chicken I'd ever seen at raising cage. I proceeded to look around and notice that everybody else's chicken was extremely large too It's like this location has the largest tenders from any raising Cane's. Not really was a good site to see. That being said, it was a lot of food and I didn't notice at first that the staff forgot my coleslaw which I did have to go back and get. I will say it is a little cramped in this area. Not a lot of spaced maneuver with your car or with your person which kills the atmosphere a little bit for me. Besides that, I'm going to have to come back and see if this place has the same consistency in their tenders and if they do, if they're really question, my local raising Cane's in Pflugerville.

Exactly what it is - raising cane’s in a off the beaten path strip mall vibes. Great chicken and even better sauce. Quick ‘n’ dirty.

Google
Tonight, tenders had a burnt taste, fries were over salted, and lemonade had very little flavor. The only decent thing was the toast. Very disappointing experience. Very strange how literally 3/4 of the meal failed tonight as I’ve had decent experiences on previous visits. Maybe just an off night, but pretty unacceptable.

Google
This is the caniac combo. Small tenders..rude service.. But the food was hot and good but not worth your buck. Go to the fellow restaurant near by

Google
It's not a bad place for being another chicken joint. If you want anything else, you're out of luck. Chicken only. I'm not a big chicken fan, and there are no other options. I had the crinkle cut fried. They were average fries. Cain sauce is extra unless you order the larger options.

Google
It was not really the atmosphere is was the fact that you had to drive all the way around the building to get to the drive through. It was more like a game of going in circles to me. It was my first time to this canes and the food is always great at canes but I won't be back to this one. I am sure the employees had nothing to do with this so the complaint is against the corporate who chose this particular location. Do better. The employees deserve it!

Google
I love y’all Cane’s, but these two-bite tenders ain’t it! This was basically a kids meal. I will say that the food here is always fresh and the service is great. If you’re in a time crunch, don’t stop by this location. The traffic around it is TERRIBLE and the entrance to the drive-thru can be confusing.

Yelp
Raising Cane's doesn't just serve chicken--they serve golden, crispy perfection with a side of pure joy. The tenders are always hot, juicy, and fried to crunchy excellence. No mystery meat, no weird breading--just straight-up finger magic. But let's be real: the Cane's Sauce is the real MVP. I don't know what's in it (witchcraft?), but I'd dip just about anything in it. Fries? Elite. Toast? Life-changing. Coleslaw? Honestly, I swap it out for extra toast and I regret nothing. The service is fast, the staff is friendly, and the menu is so simple you never have to second-guess your order--just grab your combo and vibe. If you're looking for fancy, this ain't it. But if you want comfort food that hits every time, Cane's is undefeated.

Yelp
Went to get some chicken after long water activities. On Father's Day they had a BOGO box deal but turns out you needed the app for a week to take advantage of this. So we got, got. But also our fault for not reading more into it lol. The drive through people were really nice and quick. And the chicken came out pretty good. The toasted bread was kind of lumpy, wish it would have gotten toasted harder. For some reason they only gave us one ketchup and two napkins. Two dads will need more than two napkins for this meal.

Yelp
$15 for the smallest chicken strips I've seen in my life. If they get any smaller, they will need to update the menu to call these nuggets!!! Man, I used to love raising canes, but the quality and portions have gone rapidly downhill over the years. I recommend trying dans burgers. Crazy good chicken tenders that are huge and half the price. Step your game up canes!
google avatar

Yelp
Classic Canes but a really good experience is worth noting. Friendly staff, clean restaurant, fresh meal, what's not to love? Nothing but good notes here, one of the best Canes experiences I've had!

Yelp
I had Cane's chicken fingers for the first time a few months ago, and since then I haven't gone back to Chick-fil-A. The breading is nice and crunchy, and the chicken peels apart well but isn't dry at all. The buttery Texas toast is dangerously addictive, and the Cane's sauce goes so well with the chicken fingers! The fries are a great late-night snack as well. I would recommend paying a little extra for the half iced tea, half lemonade - it's one of the best Arnold Palmers I've had. The service here is very efficient, I usually get my food the minute after finding a table. This location can get very crowded, especially on weeknights, so it may be difficult to find seating if you go then. The parking lot is pretty small, but there's also some street parking across from the store. The drive-thru is usually busy, so I've chosen to dine-in each time I've visited. Food-wise, however, it's definitely at the top of my list for fast-food chicken spots!

Yelp
The good: Food was hot and fresh. Almost burned my mouth on the chicken fingers from how fresh they were! Texas toast tasted great, and the fries were cooked to perfection. The bad: Chicken fingers tasted a bit funky, but maybe that was because they were so fresh. Also, was really busy when I went and food took a while to come out.

Yelp
5 Stars - Thanks to Ashton! Had a mix-up with our order at the Brodie Raising Cane's, but Ashton, the manager, went above and beyond to make it right. Super friendly, handled everything quickly, and even introduced us to their honey mustard, which we'd never tried before but will definitely be ordering again. Great service makes all the difference. Thanks, Ashton!

Yelp
The drive thru access required one loop around the building to get into the entrance, awkward. Must be due to its tight position. Got 10 chicken fingers to go. $20.44. Kind of BS that none of their tenders comes with their Cane sauce at all. $0.42 more for each added sauce. Pretty quick drive thru line here. Let's see if my old employee was right about how good this chicken really is. The sauce looks like their version of comeback sauce. You can smell the oil from the fry of the chicken. The chicken tenders from here are decent. Their cane sauce is so-so, not special.

Yelp
Insanely fast service & good tenders & toast as a sub for the cold slaw. the canes sauce is awesome

Yelp
Clean... Food cane out quick... downtown so very crowded and hard to find a spot to park and eat. But for the location they keep this place flowing.
google avatar

Noah A.

Yelp
The food was incredible. I barely had to wait thanks to the good service! The ambiance was very nice as well. This is my first time in America and I understand why so many people don't want to leave. 10/10 would try again.

Yelp
We had a fantastic family meal here. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. The manager Terry Stokes and his team did a WONDERFUL job. God bless him and everyone there. Thank you all so much!

Carlos G.

Yelp
Service is above and beyond! Highly recommend this Cane's. STELLAR service, GREAT food

Casey K.

Yelp
Heavy set girl running the counter could lose the unnecessary attitude, everyone else seems to be okay, I wouldn't go to this location if I were you.

David C.

Yelp
Service is fast and friendly. Fries are not my favorite but the texas toast more than makes up for it.

Yelp
I write this as a type 1 diabetic going into ketoacidosis, which can be terminal. I had them confirm that my drink was diet after making sure to say diet while ordering, as I wasn't planning on inflicting a death sentence upon myself. I understand that this mixup could be unnoticeable for most, but some people have serious health concerns that put them at high risk, hence me double-checking. I haven't had any issues with this location otherwise, but this careless mistake seems like grounds for a lawsuit.

Yelp
Just went through Raising Cane's drive through about an hour ago. Even though when I got there there were only a few cars, it took 37 minutes to finally get my food. I get home and start eating and the bread is cold and only semi-toasted on one side, the fries are cold and they forgot to put salt. The chicken is the only thing good. I made the mistake of ordering a large lemonade and it is mostly water with a little bit of lemon. I mostly order the medium sized lemonade and it has always been good. Yes, it is mostly ice with a little bit of lemonade, but it has always tasted good until today. Almost $14 for a pretty bad meal.

Luis A.

Yelp
Good food and fair prices. Other than that, just another chicken chain. The place Is on par with your average Burger King.

Yelp
I was told by my Texan friend that we had to stop here on our way to dinner to have some of their chicken tenders. We got two pieces of chicken tenders, 1 Texas toast and some cane sauce. The chicken tenders were ok- breading was delicious but our chicken was kind of dry. Also only one piece of tender was the full tender the other one was like a shredded half of the tender so I felt ripped off The Texas toast was delicious. Love that toasted butter soaking into the bread. And the cane's sauce is a definite must have - it is so delicious. Also it goes with everything: chicken and toast!

Jacob R.

Yelp
I'm from Casper, Wyoming so there's not very many 'good' chicken places and when I came to Austin last year, the first place my brother took me was Raising Canes and I was SHOCKED. The staff is always nice and helpful and the environment was great.

Yelp
All i ever wanted and more thanks for the delightful food. Box ComboBox ComboThe Box Combo - 4 Chicken FingersTexas Toast

Yelp
For chicken tenders, this campus location is one of the best. It is really busy, especially the drive-thru. They added a lane thing of cones so you are directed around the restaurant parking to get in line. The lane has really helped the problems of entering from MLK. It is better to just use the Caniac app and pre-order so that you just park and get your takeout. If you link your membership card, you get all the deals. My favorite size combo is the box combo, but sometimes I get something smaller. The chicken tenders are small but crispy. We never had a problem with them here, unlike other places that sometimes undercook them. The number of tenders you get depends on which combo you order. The crinkle fries are a large portion. The Texas toast is the best. I am not a fan of the coleslaw, so I sub it with another Texas toast every time. The Cane sauce is definitely a hit.

Jeffrey X.

Yelp
They give out chicken tenders that are shorter than my finger. Food is lukewarm at best, and it just isn't worth it at its price anymore. Service was decently fast, and ambience is great. It's just that portions are ridiculously small now
google avatar

Erasmo G.

Yelp
One thing is not having the proper space to have a good functioning drive-through. But you could at least have someone outside directing it. A truck almost hit me jamming itself in to the drive-through and no one was there to tell them it wasn't an entrance, Very dangerous. Oh but it's not just that, once I got to the end of my lemonade I noticed all these pieces of plastic inside of the cup. Who's to know if I drank any of them or not. Yes I appreciate the lemonade is homemade but for that reason a more careful eye should be put into it

Nicholas K.

Yelp
Best chicken I've ever had. It is always so tender and juicy the sauces especially good also, the toast is always slightly crispy on the outside and soft in the inside perfectly buttered. The crinkle cut fries are above average, but they are still very good. The merchandise is top-notch. Would recommend.

Yelp
I had a work order come in for something broken at this location and when I went into the back it was the absolute CLEANEST kitchen I have ever seen. Whoever is managing this place is doing better than a lot of restaurants do!
google avatar

Yelp
I just don't feel like these lil ass strips worth $10 sorry, it all tastes good but yea the strips small asl, I mean great texture and decent flavor but come on

Yelp
I wanted to give a shout out to these two stores! My account got hacked and $50+ orders were made in two Texas locations and a CA location. The two Texas locations immediately put a stop on those orders, pulled them back and refunded my money. #242 #140 Thank you! The CA store on the other hand needs to be investigated! According to them they are not authorized in any way to cancel or refund orders. Right off the bat that's BS! Store #200 allowed theft. Allowed the thief to collect the order. I will now have to file fraud charges with my CC. This could have been handled immediately. But no. Not in CA. Order numbers for reference: Order # 12437368715313152 (received refund email) Order # 12436946466406400 (received refund email) Order # 12437033439395840 ---Needs to be refunded! Spoke with a young female around 11:13pm PST on 9/3/2022. She's the one that lied to me about refunds.

David B.

Yelp
It used to be worth it because the chicken strips were large but now they have the size and they raise the price three dollars. I'm gonna have to find somewhere else to get chicken.

Addyson C.

Yelp
canes is the best fast food place I've ever had I recommend and when you get your food it's hot and fresh and the bread is the best part cause it's so crunchy and the sauce is also really good with the chicken and bread and fries but I would say canes is the best fast food and definitely should try if not.
google avatar

Angela S.

Yelp
First time trying raising canes and I have to say it's pretty good! Chicken tenders were perfect along with the bread! The dipping sauce is so yummy! Definitely check it out when visiting Texas!

Michael T.

Yelp
FIX YALLS curbside I shouldn't order curbside and have tk circle 15x because people are parked in curbside spots
google avatar

Adrik G.

Yelp
If you like chicken tenders and if you like to dip it in some of the best sauce ever invented. Come here. So good!
google avatar

Yelp
Where have you been all my life? The junk food junkie in me can't believe this place exists. The idea is brilliant. Made to order chicken fingers. There is a difference! The Raising Cane on MLK Jr. is good. I picked up food to go a couple of times. Chicken fingers were always juicy and crispy. Being from the North, I wasn't used to the Texas Toast, but I learned to like it. Coleslaw is legit and that Sauce? The sauce is awesome. The container in which they give you the fingers is smart design - it has slits in it that allow the fingers to breathe (moisture will not collect in the container and cause the breading to get soggy). Again, fast food genius. This chain originated in Louisiana. There are a bunch in Texas. Also, the girl at the register told me, there is one in the Middle East (Kuwait, I looked it up). If you are in Austin or even Louisiana, I say try it out. This regional chain is WAY better than chicken tenders from Popeye's or other fried chicken spots.

Yelp
No matter the city I'm if there's a Raising Cane's I'm eating it! We were in town for a meeting and a few people in the group never had the amazing chicken fingers so we HAD to stop by. We got an Uber there only to find the restaurant was not open drive thru only. The nice manager took our order over the phone and we still able to try the food! Great service and I'll always eat at a Raising Cane's.
google avatar

Darren C.

Yelp
I love to eat chicken! I love to eat coleslaw! I love to have a beverage! I am an older man. Cheers!
google avatar

Xen D.

Yelp
Absolutely awful service, worst of the worst. Being a loyal customer to canes coming everyday means nothing to these monsters working here (one being myself). The regulations here are under the table and who knows what the sanitation system is like now. DO NOT ORDER THEY WILL MESS UP YOUR ORDER/DRINK BEWARE

JJ P.

Yelp
food is fresh and quickly prepared but the price per calorie ratio is not the most affordable for students. ordering to-go gives less food, dine-in is better
google avatar

Marsha W.

Yelp
Just did chick fil-a. Nuggets were tiny and tiny. Still hungry. Went to cane' s. Amazing. Never go back to chick fil-a.
google avatar

Tarryn U.

Yelp
This chicken was delicious! They differently perfected that chicken and everything else. And the sauce is amazing kind of peppery kinda sweet and creamy goes with everything. I'm happy I got to try this.

Ellen G.

Yelp
I was craving fried chicken so thought I would try this spot out. Pro tip-skip the drive through and just go inside, much faster that way. The chicken fingers were fresh however as others have stated, they were a bit on the dry side. The cole slaw was standard fare, the ice tea was fresh and so were the the french fries. It made for a decadent lunch. I am not in a rush to return but do recommend you check them out if you are craving chicken fingers.
google avatar

Yelp
Food: 5/5 Cane's is my go to place for chicken. It does not matter the location - the food is always excellent. Staff is always pleasant and food is ready pretty fast. This particular Cane's actually has kind of an amazing amount of parking considering it's located off MLK and the Guad (aka an area notorious for its crappy parking) Overall Experience (For 10/31): 1/5 I was not surprised to find rowdy college students at this location but I was surprised to find incredibly RUDE and disrespectful rowdy college students here. How about we keep it down and make an effort not to piss everyone around you off by being over the top obnoxious? Especially when you are asked to knock if off? That being said, I still give Cane's 5 stars because this was one bad experience with the customers that arrived there before me. Cane's is usually busy, a bit loud, and at least somewhat full, but if that's not your cup of tea you can avoid all of that with the drive thru!
google avatar

Sammy B.

Yelp
One of the best fast food restaurants. I never have to wait more than 5 minutes after ordering. I always get the Box Combo and substitute the Cole Slaw for an extra piece of toast. The Texas toast and Canes Sauce is definitely the best part. The tenders are okay, but sometimes they're a bit soggy. The restaurant is usually pretty clean and the employees are extremely friendly! I love how they're open pretty late too. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Taylor Z.

Yelp
Juicy Chicken Tenders? Delicious Buttery Toast? Ridiculously Good Raising Cane's Sauce? They are really consistent on their juicy tenders! I've never had bad tenders after 3 years of eating here. Great food for late night, but it can get a bit crowded in the later hours, but they are super quick on service. Some of the other reviews have points on the tables being a bit unclean, but its pretty hard to keep up when its 2 AM and a bunch of drunk people are eating (not the cleanest people). The iced tea is also to die for! Great place, with great value!
google avatar

Yelp
@raisingcanes @toddgraves Today I brought my own container because of last night's order. I love your chicken, not molten styrofoam. When will you switch to cardboard boxes? Styrofoam is also not very biodegradable #disgruntledcustomer #raisingcanes #toddgraves #nostyrofoam #styrofoam #chicken #friedchicken #shamepain #corporateaccountability #greatchickenthough #weirdoonarantaboutfriedchicken

Yelp
Hot garbage, absolute trash. Don't get me wrong, I knew what I was getting into, fast food fried chicken. My expectations were properly set, I've had canes before. But this time my order came and chicken tasted like someone threw a pack of cigarettes in the fryer. I'm assuming they burnt an order prior and didn't replace the oil. subsequently my order tasted like absolute trash. Y'all it's chicken tenders, you almost can't screw it up...but you did. I hate that I feel compelled to review a fast food chain but here I am.
google avatar

Reese L.

Yelp
The customers service here is just phenomenal. I hope corporate takes note and give the hard workers a raise. The people here are so polite

L H.

Yelp
Service was fine but the French fries portion was not as generous as other locations. You're getting 6 pieces and paid $18 you should get a decent amount of fries.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm surprised that chicken tenders from a fast food chain can taste delicious! Maybe it's because of Cane's special sauce that makes its chicken tastier than other places? The sauce was so addictive and it made it eat the tenders non-stop even though I never liked battered chicken breasts. It's like a mixture of ketchup and mayonnaise and other seasonings that I couldn't distinguish ( all employees have to swear to not reveal the sauce's recipe- so it's OK that I don't know what's in it? Lol) The chicken tenders were alright, but there's nothing special about it. The fries I got were a bit soggy and cold. But I liked the Texas bread, very buttery and mildly sweet! I'd not comeback to Cane's, but I get why my UT friend frequent this place weekly! The service was so fast, I got my order in less than 3 minutes. And the chicken tenders (with sauce) are better than other fast food places!
