Chick It Out: Our First Taste of Raising Cane’s
This was our first visit to Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers restaurant. We had seen one in New York City last summer but not had the time to call in. On this occasion we were passing through Union Station in D.C. with a lot of spare time, so took the opportunity to finally give them a try (Sat, May 31, 2025).
Using the electronic kiosk, we ordered:
🍗 The Box Combo (4 chicken fingers, Crinkle-Cut Fries, Texas Toast, Cane’s Sauce, Coleslaw and regular Coke) = $13.49
🍗 The Box Combo (4 chicken fingers, Crinkle-Cut Fries, Texas Toast, Cane’s Sauce, Coleslaw and regular Lemonade) = $13.79 (inc. $.30 upcharge for lemonade)
❌ Cane’s Sauce = $.49 (they didn’t provide it)
🍴 Utensils = $0.00
👜 Bag = $.05
🐶 Collectible Graduation Plush Puppy = $9.99
😢 Tax = $3.78
💰 Total = $41.59
The restaurant was heaving and we briefly had to line up outside in a queue for the two electronic kiosks. Despite this, service was swift - the bagged food arrived in exactly 5 minutes.
Unfortunately, our order wasn’t accurate - the server forgot to put in the additional Cane’s Sauce and they also forgot to put in the $9.99 collectible puppy plushy; we noticed the latter was missing and had to ask for it.
The restaurant was modern and vibrantly decorated with a large plastic yellow dog in the corner - what was with the dogs? We later discovered that the chain was named after one of the co-founder’s Labrador Retriever, Raising Cane! Mystery solved.
We took our boxes to a nearby food court, as all Raising Cane’s tables were high without chairs - not the most comfortable way to enjoy your food.
👍 Our chicken fingers were hot and juicy and the portion size was very filling, making this a substantial lunch.
👍 We enjoyed trying the Cane’s Sauce and coleslaw.
👍 The Texas Toast, adorned with sesame seeds, had a light buttery and garlic flavor and was interesting to try.
👍 The lemonade was refreshing and worth the $.30 upcharge.
The flavors of the battered chicken fingers were considerably different to the competitors we were familiar with, KFC and Popeyes, but that didn’t necessarily make them any better.
Raising Cane’s was founded in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in 1996 and is soon to celebrate its 30th birthday. We are sure we will see more of their restaurants when our U.S. travels continue and we would call in again.
