6 North Carolina Small-Batch Distilleries Worth Tapping Into - Eater Carolinas

"“Born of our love for craft beer and cocktails,” Raleigh Rum Company hit the scene in 2014 by the hands of three North Carolina natives — partners Matt Grossman, John Benefiel and Chris Mendler — with a dream to fill the hole in the market and bring top-notch craft rum to the market. The hometown rum distiller now offers its handmade hot selections — literally, like Carolina Reaper Rum, as well as its premium white rum, spiced rum and sweet dark rum — in local ABC stores in the NC section. For safe and socially distanced tastings and tours (masks required), abbreviated hours are currently Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m. (with bottle sales, including limited release Procrastinator’s Reserve). Or, email info@ralieghrumcompany.com to schedule a curbside pickup" - Melissa Howsam

My friend and I took the tour and was very impressed. Don't be deceived by the size of the operation, they produce a large quantity of rum. Also, the distiller, Edward, was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to show the process and answer all of our questions. After the tour, we sampled their reaper, sweet dark, reserve, white, and spiced rums. It was some of the best rum I've ever had. Edward was the highlight telling us about the company's start and some amazing facts about rum and Raleigh's liquor history. He made us an iced tea that had tea, mint, lime, and spiced rum that was dangerously good! (A can't miss) I would have gone for the rum itself, but Edward made it a blast. I'll definitely go back!!

Saturday afternoon tour/cocktail is not to be missed! Very low key, industrial setting with super friendly staff. Learn about making rum, sample their five spirits, grab a cocktail... my fav was their amaretto.

I stopped by with a friend on Saturday and we were both entirely impressed with our experience. The distillery is a small operation, but learning about the rum-making process is still interesting. There are samples after, and the rum is very tasty. What really made the visit memorable for us was the host. I am kicking myself for not remembering his name (Edward?), but he was excellent! He took the time to answer all of our questions and made some delicious drinks after the tour using Raleigh Rum. We both picked up a few bottles and left happy customers.

Google
Raleigh Rum is my favorite place to go in Raleigh! High quality drinks from a knowledgeable and friendly owner. The tour is interesting and entertaining and the rum is top shelf! Cannot recommend this place enough!

They no longer do tours, the tasting room is closed. The rum is nothing special. So the whole appeal of this place is gone.

Great Saturday activity! Edward, who works as a distiller there, gave us a tour and rum tasting. As the person responsible for making Raleigh Rum, he was incredibly knowledgeable on the process. More importantly, he was genuinely just a great guy to be around. I would highly recommend you stop in and check it out, especially if Edward is there!

Great tour and very friendly staff! You arrive and they immediately pour you a drink and start tasting the rum!

Great product and good cocktails. We really enjoyed talking with the bartender. Tasting room is currently outdoors, so dress appropriately. However, definitely worth the visit! Looking forward to when they open an indoor area!

Yelp
If you appreciate handmade, local products, then you should visit Raleigh Rum Company! I instantly felt the bartenders pride and passion as they shared the companies story, which made me excited to try their product. If you like rum, then the straight tastings are lovely (so flavorful!) and if you're a lighter drinker, then they can make you a cocktail! I loved the vibes and the rum is so flavorful and smooth. I'm leaving with a bottle of each of their rums, I hope to visit this place again soon :) Go visit them!

Yelp
One of my all time favorite and go to rums! I always have the White Rum, Procrastinator's (aged) Rum, Sweet Dark Rum and the Carolina Reaper Rum on my shelf at all times! I honestly can drink any of these rums neat because as a rum girl I do like rum neat but the white rum especially is a great mixer as well. It goes great with so many things even diet mountain dew (great on a hot summer beach day). The Reaper is great to add to a blood mary for the extra kick that may be needed in a bloody mary. You can easily drink the Procrastinator neat but it also goes great in an old fashioned. The Sweet Dark is so unique and is again great neat. Everytime I've been to the distillery they have always been so nice and friendly. They give free tours and tastings of all their products afterwards.

Yelp
A must-go. Take the brief, free tour to see how everything is made. The owner is knowledgeable, kind, and funny. You also get to try the rums: white rum, sweet rum, spiced rum, and Carolina Reaper Rum. Our favorite was the Carolina Reaper Rum. It takes their tasty rum up a notch, adding Carolina Reapers, one of the hottest peppers in the world, combing good flavor and heat. Unlike some things that claim to be hot, this is no imposter: It's got a real kick. It's good straight but also a great addition to your favorite tiki drinks, mojitos, etc. Trust me: you're gonna want this on your bar. I wish that we'd bought more than we did. You don't have to like the heat because they also have spiced, sweet, and white rum, which were also good. They're open every Saturday and parking is easy.

Yelp
While in Raleigh we had to check out the local Rum Company. Great space and a great tour. Their story is short since they are still new to the distillery game. The rum is smooth, the white rum, the spiced rum, the dark rum. Wonderful distinct flavor. They even let us try a rum they are currently working on - a poblano pepper rum. I can't wait for that to hit the ABC stores. It's spicy all the way down. Silly warm heat! These guys have their 3 rums in many ABC stores around NC. Don't hesitate to try the local stuff, you won't be disappointed in the least. Take the tour! They'll make you a drink and show you what they are doing so well. Creating beautiful rum!

Yelp
A free tour and tasting every Saturday at 2PM, how exciting! The tour itself is not very long, Raleigh Rum Company and Oak City Amaretto share a production space so we were able to hear about both. I wish the Oak City Amaretto piece was a tad more about the process though. After the tour we were able to sample the rums [white, dark, spiced and carolina reaper] and amaretto. All of these were fantastic, we were able to purchase a few of our favorites before departing.

Yelp
While the location is a little out of the way (15 minutes from downtown Raleigh heading towards Knightdale) and a little oddly located, inside a warehouse on Corporation Parkway; the RUM speaks for itself! And boy is it tasty. I will admit, I know much more about beer than spirits/liquor but I do know in general what I like and don't like. This is one of THE best rums I've tasted: smooth, easy to drink with a splash of lime and LOCAL! The 30-45 minute tour takes place every Saturday currently at 2pm. This is a great day-time activity for a local, but I don't think I'd say a must for a tourist. You can stop here in the afternoon for a tour, Q&A and tasting and head towards downtown for additional afternoon/evening adventures. DEFINITELY try the rum by itself first (with a slice of lime). The offer several cocktail combinations in addition to trying their product straight post-tour on Saturday's. Unfortunately they were out of the hand-crafted mojito "mix", but I could see this rum pairing nicely with some lime, mint, agave & a splash of tonic. I wasn't a huge fan of the rum punch, but I usually like my alcohol to speak for itself and rum is already a sweeter liquor because of the molasses [or sugar] base. Raleigh Rum paired nicely with coke, but honestly, my favorite was just straight [I DON'T say that often!]. Round out your tour with a souvenir: $10 t-shirts and $5 labeled glasses. Spiced Raleigh Rum coming soon AND, after October 1st, they'll be able to sell a bottle to your AT the distillery! Hurray (this goes for all distilleries in the area, new legislation!!) Look for Raleigh Rum Company products in an ABC store near you!

Yelp
The Raleigh Rum Company offers a free tour every Saturday at 2:00. We went today and had an awesome time! They let you sample both their white rum and their spiced rum and they serve either a mojito, fruit drink, or a rum and Coke. All three were delicious!! NC law allows you to purchase one bottle of rum from them directly once per year. Every person in our group went home with a bottle! They also have Cornhole out front and an oversized Jenga set inside. They sell glasses, shirts, and offer free stickers with their badass logo on them. It's definitely worth grabbing a group of friends and spending a Saturday afternoon there. We will be back soon!!

Yelp
Think garage when in visioning this place. But don't let that dissuade you from doing the tour! The guys that run this place are SUPER nice and knowledgeable! We came for the tour and we're able to try a sample of rum punch, rum and coke or rum mojito. I got rum punch and hubbie got the mojito. Both were great! The rum is very nice and I personally think some of the best I had....totally need to make some rum balls! So, some Saturday at 2, come take a tour and get a sample! Free, and a great learning experience! Then go buy their rum and get to creating!

Yelp
Took their small tour and nice story about friends having a similar vision. These three guys have developed a uniquely flavored product. Very interesting distilling contraption. They produce a light clear, dark and sweet rum. I am bias towards the dark two which are very good. Something you can drink on rocks or just chiiled. This product can be found in most Wake County ABC stores but if you don't see it ask clerks about carrying them.

Yelp
Came in because it was a Yelp event. They gave us a tour and their ethos. Bought some amaretto. Free tasting on saturdays 2-3pm.

Yelp
Hidden inside an unassuming building, this place doesn't appear to be much but the rum tells a different story. Run by two guys who have a love for all things rum, they clearly show their passion for what they love to do. The rum is tasty and served in the most adorable of bottles. If you are looking for a local and unique gift, go pick up one of these bottles of rum. There's also Oak City Amaretto sold there if you are looking for a drink for non-rum drinkers. Both are super tasty and worth the visit.

Yelp
Cute little distillery. Very small operation. The two gents there were very friendly and informative. Good runs. White rum is good. Spiced a bit too much on the cinnamon for my taste but the dark rum was awesome.

Yelp
Went for their first half day tour and food truck event. Great idea. Stuft food truck was awesome and the tour was great. Too bad they can't sell more than a bottle per person at their building or would have bought more. I personally love their spiced rum, my new rum of choice and a great local product.

Yelp
Great time on the tour today. Interesting that there's a distillery right here under our noses in Raleigh! Friendly staff and wonderful product. Yes a bit out of the way (in a warehouse) but quaint. I'd give it a 5 stars if they'd had a sweet dark rum (but they're working on it!).
