Bay Area Grocery Stores Grapple With Staffing Shortages and Stocking Snarls | Eater SF

"I followed the roller-coaster incident at the Raley’s on the 3600 block of Lone Tree Way in Antioch, which initially reported an employee had tested positive and immediately shuttered, then—after a professional sanitizing and an investigation—retracted the positive-test announcement and reopened at 6 a.m. Tuesday." - Eve Batey

I enjoy visiting Raley’s when I’m in town. My favorite part is browsing in the floral department. I spoke with Cynthia and she was the absolute best! She was very cheerful, polite and well knowledgeable. She’s amazing and does a very great job, I will definitely return for my floral needs.

Google
Best tasting cakes in Antioch and their bakery /decorator is phenomenal

Rohan K.

Google
Great selection of products, along with a decent deli. I only wish the prices were a bit lower, although they do often have a good set of savings in the app.

Google
Great inventory. They usually have everything I'm looking for and their selection is good. The bakery makes awesome cakes...tiramisu is better than every other store bought I've tried. The store is clean and well organized. Lastly, the staff is kind and helpful.

Google
Slow, waited 10 minutes in line no on called for another cashier Elsia (the cashier) complaining about her arthritis to customers and just blabbing. Closer to the house doesn't mean better service. I will keep going to Brentwood.

I love my neighborhood Raleys!! The staff is friendly and the only store that still unloads your cart for you. However, lately they have been going downhill when it comes to 2 very important words: customer service. A manager I know, confirmed that all Raleys have been told to cut baggers. 9 times out of 10 when I'm in there, there are no baggers so I bag my own groceries to keep the line moving because with the checkers bagging, there are always long lines, there are never any carts up front or if there are, they are all down by the door they locked up, orginally because of Covid and now they say because of theft. They pay for a security guard ( a cost past on to us) so open the other doors! Also, since they've cut staff, I've not seen any price reductions and according to the staff, the money is not going to them. Its sad. I just took the attached pics. As you can see, all the carts are out in the parking lot and the lone one up front, was just put there by a customer. It's still better than shopping at Safeway, no disputing that but what happened to our neighborhood Raley?

Google
Raley’s is hands down one of my favorite grocery stores! The store is always clean, well-organized, and easy to navigate. The quality of their products is excellent, especially the fresh produce, bakery items, and deli. I also love their wide selection of organic and health-conscious options. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful—they go out of their way to make sure you find what you need. Prices are reasonable for the quality, and I appreciate their weekly deals and promotions. Shopping at Raley’s is always a pleasant experience, and I find everything I need (and more!). Highly recommend!

Google
It's okay. It's not a safe environment anymore. The neighborhood is going downhill fast. It was already bad for the last 5-7 years. After COVID it is really getting bad. When a company doesn't even bother to paint the parking spaces so they are visible at night. It's been over 10 years. The owner or manager no longer takes pride in their business. A few years back my family decided not to get food from the deli because we found out they were serving expired food. We brought back the seafood salad after an hour because my husband began vomiting, he got food poisoning. I was actually proud of the manager though. He forced the worker to taste the pasta right in front of me. The worker was refusing. She finally tasted a tiny bite and then spit it out. I'm sure the conversation got worse after I walked away, although the employee still kept their job. It used to be a nice store. Prices are too high for the unsavory location and atmosphere.

Yelp
Just shopped at Raley's which I never do and I remember why. Although the selection of items is vast which is nice, I spent a long time shopping today to be met with a checkout clerk that I honestly thought was going to go crazy in the middle of checking me out. He never asked how my day was or anything like that just asked what bags I wanted and then proceeded to freak out over his walkie talkie not working because he didn't want to bag and had a line forming. He spoke a lot under his breath about this issue. When it came time to bag anything and everything is thrown literally into bags. I just spent $320 on my 6 little bags of groceries and you're treating me like crap for it even though that's how they have jobs. Then a clerk comes up and he proceeds to ask about hearing him over the walkie talkies, meanwhile the new clerk blows her nose, messes with her tissue a few times, puts it in her apron and starts touching my food items! What in the actual hell is going on over here. You know what store never treats me like I'm the problem to short staffing and high prices? Sprouts and I will be taking my business there exclusively!

Yelp
Came to this store with my 1 year old and no shopping carts to be found. One employee was able to get a cart for an elderly woman but didn't even acknowledge me. Perhaps because it was busy. Had to shop while carrying my son and currently expecting. Horrible experience for me. To top it off they only have two cashiers going and the lines are ALWAYS long. Seems like they are very short staffed. Expect to spend 30 plus minutes even if you're only picking up 2-4 items.

Yelp
The new delivery service is bad. No notifications, no tracking, they just show up. The door dash driver asked me to carry two cases of water from her car to my door. I called ecart, the store mgr, Raleys service center and door dash. No one knows who to talk to about an issue with these drivers. Thinking of switching my weekly shopping to Safeway!

Yelp
Today 11/23/22 I went to pick up my pre-ordered Turkey. It took a little bit to find my name but got my Turkey and the ladies at the deli counter were great. But before leaving I realized I should grab a couple things - chips & gravy which I had forgotten to get. Lines were not long but I chose poorly. Operator 716713 was checking me and my 4 items out. I tap my credit card & it's asking me for a pin. I tell the dude - hey it's asking for a pin and this is a credit card - he actually tells me "It says debit - I don't know what to tell you" I asked him to push the button that makes it a cc transaction & he then tells me to use a different card. I am starting to get agitated & I stead of making a scene I use a different card. He doesn't thank me & was super rude. So instead of making a scene thought I'd post about him. NORMALLY my Raley's shopping trips are easy & all workers are great. Perhaps management can remind the cashiers that being treated with kindness also needs to happen on their end. I've been shopping here since moving to Antioch in 1999

Yelp
First time in this store in decades after moving back to this side of East County. I realized that most of the sale items were on the "app", but was unclear on how to use this one specifically. I set everything up....until I couldn't go further and then got the items I needed. I approached Elisa/Elise -operator ending in 925 on receipt for help while in the line because there was no one at the Customer Service desk. I know how that can frustrate a cashier when it's busy, but she didn't make a face or send me off somewhere else. She was kind and incredibly helpful. She got me on track, explained how to have things ready for next time so that I could be prepared. I really appreciate the excellent customer service.

Yelp
Had to do another review about this place that cease to amaze me. Why? The PRICE for ONE slab of baby back ribs is the highest I've ever seen in my life(see the photo) $31.00 , YES for ONE slab! I was positive that it was a misprint. I showed the butcher & asked what s so special about this slab for it to be priced at 31 bucks, he had no answer, he paused, looked at it, he acted like it was normal , he walked away with it as if to change the sticker price, NOPE! He returned after I left & put it back , price stayed the same. I really think he priced it so high so that no one would buy it and he could take it home without cost, or at a greatly reduced cost for himself later.

Yelp
I normally don't have any issues at Raley's. I do my shopping there many times and I can always find what I need there, despite the fact that it's pretty pricey. I also liked how they haven't remodeled their store yet and they kept the Decor package (please don't remodel this store, you have this charm that other stores don't have). Unless you live in the North Bay or the East Bay, you don't really see any Raley's stores in the Bay Area. You'd normally see them in Sacramento and throughout the upper portion of NorCal (like Tahoe). If there is one thing this Raley's can improve on, however, is to at least open more checkstands, as I seem to notice only one or two checkstands is open.

Trisha C.

Yelp
This Raley's is so nasty. There have been several times the dates are expired on yogurt, sour cream and other dairy. It's definitely one of those stores you have to check the dates. The employee turn around is crazy, you don't see the same employee in there more than 2 times which tells you something about management. There are a few employees that have remained that's about it. The rifle raf in the store is scary, I never feel safe shopping there. Unfortunately this is my neighborhood store and go for essentials only!

Dolly E.

Yelp
Disappointed and dissatisfied with this store. Need customer service training. From cashiers to security guards. Their Monday specials are always out of stock. When I told the staff she just shook her head and said well they didn't send us enough? What????? Really? Not shopping there again.

Kenneth W.

Yelp
Hello, Raleys is basically my local store.A bit pricey sometimes but I'm in a wheelchair and don't have many options. Ican get to luckys but there prices are crazy even using the app and working any. Deals still Raleys s better for me. The staff is friendly and helpful. Using the app seems to build points fast. Which reallyhelps good deli and fresh bakery. Over all I recommend Raley's. Good peeps good experience. Thank you

Greg H.

Yelp
Nice shopping center, ample parking, friendly people, good mix of shops and grocery. Good lighting in the parking lot at night.

Regina K.

Yelp
CHECK THE DATE! Maybe RALEYS has a problem with shredded Parmesan cheese (check my previous Raleys post). But, I'm pretty sure we both have issues with MOLD. Cmon Raleys - your store brand AND Stella?!! Ridiculous!

Brigitte G.

Yelp
The bakery did a beautiful job with my sons cake! I ordered a few days in advance over the phone and woman on the phone was very nice and helpful. The cake came beyond what I expected. The cake artist did beautiful details. I ordered a small one layer cake for my sons first birthday. I definitely will be coming back for cakes here and good customer service. :) Thank you!

Yelp
Pre made Christmas Dinner Bought their $100 prime rib dinner. Upon opening it, the piece of meat was NOT prime rib. It was already overcooked. When heated it was tougher than shoe leather. I just spent $100 on a piece of meat I am going to feed to my dogs. A picture is worth a thousand words, would you pay $100 for this garbage. I also added a picture of what they advertised it to be. Definitely FALSE ADVERTISING! Also, I purchased their precooked turkey for $40 and it was nothing more than the frozen precooked butterball turkey you can buy at Safeway in their frozen foods for under $30. Again, FALSE ADVERTISING! UPDATE:122621- I called the store and spoke with a Manager, Brian. He refunded me the price of the dinner. He was very pleasant to deal with and seemed genuinely sorry; however, this ruined our Christmas, so it is hard to be satisfied with the resolution. Also, given the conversation, I do not believe I was the only one to call on this.

Yelp
Shopped 7/2/2023 Every time I enter my neighborhood store I leave unhappy. Today's reasons: If you don't have your glasses to read fine print on prices don't buy. A) Large printed price may only be for buying many multiple items printed very small font. B) Some prices are only for members C) Some prices are twice as high as other local store. 3 young men stocking shelves this morning. One of them walks down the isle and messes up the straightened product as a joke. Hour wasted which causes higher prices. Have not bought a bottle of wine in years at this store. Requires multiple items to get the large price printed which is same price as one bottle at other stores. I don't need multiple bottles and I sure don't want to waste money. I do not need the assistance in becoming a drunk. Not their fault but a product bought in health care was dried and unusable. The reorganization of the store makes it too difficult to find items. Only sense it makes is to make customers zig zag across store looking for some items. The super slow cashiers should not be working during shifts with lots of people shopping. Best thing about store is security guard at door. Even though the local gangsters still walk out of store with bottles of booze.

Yelp
This review is a shout out to Bee. Today as I was grocery shopping there was a man behind me that was being extremely rude, and she handled it so incredibly well and made me feel way more comfortable. It has not escaped my attention that due to Covid 19 grocery shoppers have been more on edge/tense and have lashed out at others. I hope this also doesn't happen with employees. By the time I checked out, I actually waited a little bit to leave just to make sure he wasn't going to be rude to her too. She deserves to be recognized for her graceful handling of the situation and her incredible customer service.

Yelp
A standard grocery store charging WHOLE FOOD PRICES. I live across the street and AVOID this over priced bootleg health food store at all cost. A shiny star for all the employees.
google avatar

Kislev A.

Yelp
OMG their tri-tip is soooooooooooooo good! We bought a pre-packaged already-cooked Tri-tip, popped it in the fridge, and ate it during our super long drive to Tahoe. That sucker was still good, even though it was cold. And it went really well with the baguette we had for a sandwich. Large parking lot.

Yelp
This is an old school Raleys and I think that's what I like about it. Yes the new one is new and pretty but I feel like it is so uppity and pretentious. The people that work here, for the most part are nice and very helpful. The store is clean and organized. No half eaten fruit on shelves, like Winco. Nice health food section. Interesting items that you don't see on other store's shelves. Tasty produce. I could go on and on. But what really impresses me is how nice most of their employees are. Yes..there are some boneheads that work there but in general I have noticed in the past 10 years I have shopped here there is a general niceness throughout.

Andy C.

Yelp
hi, I'm standing in line and the cashier Ryan standing there and there's a long line of people any waves a lady in an opened it up real quick. There's other people waiting for 1012 minutes.
google avatar

Niall M.

Yelp
Update. 12 days ago Raley's replied and said the area would be priced pronto. Still not done. The rating is based on one thing. There is a whole produce aisle where there is no pricing on the bottom shelf. I have attached a picture but there are others on yelp that show the exact same thing. Ridiculous.

Yelp
The only thing good about this store is the adorable bagger named Marcus. The rest is bad. The store is run down & dirty, didn't have hardly anything I came for so I had to get random things instead. The organic section is gone & the items are now mixed in with everything else so I had to hunt all over the store and not one employee was anywhere to be found. Then it came time to check out. Cynthia seemed miserable and her demeanor and attitude matched. Then she was just flat out rude to me. I asked if they moved the organic section and I just didn't find it & her reply was a condescending " we put those items with the normal items". Not what she said, it was how she said it. Not a thank you, have a nice day, this rain is crazy, nothing at all. I said by Marcus & Cynthia & she just looked at me not even replying. What if I was an elderly person who doesn't get out often & she was the only interaction I'd had in a week?
google avatar

Yelp
Shout out to that girl behind the counter! Stephanie makes the best sandwiches. She so friendly and easy to talk to.
google avatar

Eric V.

Yelp
Expired dairy on shelves on two separate occasions ! Always long lines.
google avatar

Quinallison D.

Yelp
This Raley's has very nice employees and they run pretty efficiently around the clock. I would rarely have an issue with finding an item and I gave the place one less star just cause I hope that corporate can put some money into improving the interior and exterior property. But the employees do keep it nice and clean inside.

Adrian S.

Yelp
Need to get there shit together.... only 2 fucken registers open? 45 min wait to check out 2items
google avatar

G M.

Yelp
That's funny I didn't call and spoke to a manager that said if the ere were to many employees outside that they couldn't do anything about it. Great job Raley's
google avatar

Mannie D.

Yelp
We've ordered online through the Raley's app for groceries to be picked up. So far it's worked out for us. We've been able to get 80-90% of our items, most are food items. It's really convenient as tou choose the date and time to pickup, and you park in special spots close the entrance and text or call a number. They ask what kind of car and they come out with face mask and gloves with your groceries and place them in your car with the receipt. We've used the service twice and it's been great for us. There is a service fee if you spend less than $100, but well worth it if you don't want to go into the grocery store.

Yelp
I am appalled at how the alleged, confessed store manager, responded to a complaint that a customer was in his store, without a mask, potentially spreading AIDS around to other customer and staff. There was this guy who stated that someone had entered his store without a mask to a clerk. Who told the alleged manager, who did NOTHING. Meanwhile, people like me, with a compromised immune system, are risking the contraction of AIDS. They encourage this man, who was verbally abusive and overly intimidating to harass this other guy, while allowing him, to continue to check out. Even the Antioch firemen who were there did nothing to help. They seemed to be on the side of the aggressive guy without a mask who was spreading the AIDS virus. Contra Costa County Health department states that you MUST where a mask at indoor public places. The staff and alleged manager did nothing to stop this guy, prevent him from bulling the other guy. And, in fact, as I walked by, he called the other guy a liar. I cannot let this go by. I have gone to this store for years. I will no longer go to the Antioch Raley's. Safeway, here I come. Both guys were acting like babies. But, the law is the law. And i cannot afford to have my suppressed immune system in danger. If there was another way out, I would have taken it. *Replace AIDS ,with COVID.

Yelp
We are doing a "Wellness Challenge" at my work. One of the coordinators provided the following tip: "Shop the perimeter of the supermarket". Not sure why I hadn't thought of that before but it is true. The fresh stuff is generally around the perimeter while the processed/frozen/etc. foods are in the center. At least that seems to be the case at most grocery stores I have visited. That is, except for here. At this grocery store the produce is smack dab in the middle. Which is probably how it should be. Our diets should revolve around the fresh stuff. We stopped in here to pick up some bread on the way to Jac C's parents' house. The bread was fresh from the bakery and enjoyed by all. Their selection seems very expansive and the store was bright and clean. If we lived closer, this would be my grocery store of choice.
google avatar

Caro S.

Yelp
Contrary to popular belief not all Supermarkets are created equally. What I like about this Raley's is that it serves as a substitute Whole Paychecks, er Whole Foods. They have about 4 isles of natural foods including a freezer sections, bulk grains, and pharma (Umcka, herbal supplements, and vitamins). They also have a US Bank ATM and counter inside.
google avatar

Isaiah G.

Yelp
Well this place has a lot of parking. Very clean store. Everything is really well stocked and organized here. They had really good quality fruit and veggies. The lines were ok but I did go in the afternoon. This place is a little pricey but if you need something on the go this is your best bet.
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Do NOT use Raley's delivery service, it is a total joke. We were charged for $300 worth of groceries and only received $200 worth. 1/3 of what we ordered WAS MISSING!!! And we were charged for it anyway. Good luck getting your money back too. Grrrrr. I'm never shopping at Raley's again.
google avatar

Mary W.

Yelp
We moved to the area last year and the first raleys I had ever been too. It was super clean , everyone was super friendly and helpful and it has excellent selection , especially on meat . I love that it's so close and is always spot on with food quality and customer service .
google avatar

C C.

Yelp
You can get in & out of Walmart faster. 20 minutes in a line 4 times is crazy crazy crazy. Cashier slow down to hold conversations with customers and the line is to the end of the isle. They need to learn how to stick n move. Its like they don't care about the customers. ALL 4 times I had to wait in line 20 minutes or more during the week. Today I had to go back to Raleys to take a spoiled watermelon back. The stores prices are high already and we have to wait in long lines. Just sad very sad... Twice today and twice on last Thursday.

Chinkyy M.

Yelp
Joey At The Deli Is AMAZINGGG !!! Great Customer service he always makes me laugh, serves me with a smile , he's really just amazing guy all around . I find myself looking for him whenever I come to Raleys . He always gets the job done , Veryyyy Hardworking ! If I could just give him the 5 Stars I would .

LlfoodJ D.

Yelp
I hate to complain because some employees do their best. But... slow moving lines, outdated merchandise, rotting produce they think they can sell at top prices??? What's going on?
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
The deli staff is friendly but the time to get a sandwich is terribly slow. Today there was at least 5 of us waiting with nobody making sandwiches. I can tell that the deli staff all try to find other deli tasks to do at lunchtime other than making sandwiches. Tough call when i want to go there for lunch because you never know how long ifs going to take.
google avatar

Corina F.

Yelp
Hi Raley's, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for having the supplies we needed. Between you and Safeway, have it together! What I meant by this, you have an excellent selection. I will visit soon but for now, we are good for the next 4-5 weeks on supplies. Continue to do a great job and I believe you'll succeed in getting more positive reviews. Take care, Corina

Lucy Y.

Yelp
I been to this store for a long time for many many years. (30+) I like the produce and quality of stuff there. But today annoy me was a cashier coughing towards the stuff I purchased. It made me worry. So I decided not going there at this critical time anymore. But I still love the store.

Phoenix R.

Yelp
Rude cashier. She must be new. No greeting, no thanks. Nothing. Operator 705016. Lines at other two open registers open but she wasn't trying to help anyone and her register was open. Guarantee you'll lose more customers with these rude new workers at this store.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Not a well managed store. Do not trust their ads. Waisted a trip for their chicken sale., Deli was out at 5pm

Dee Z.

Yelp
For parts of the store I shopped for was fine. However, we bought dry ice. The clerk told us it might be over a little. Well, the block turned our to be 2.19 lbs and was put on the scale with 2 bags. At $7.97 per pound, the cost was $17.45. I called Safeway in Concord and their cost is $2.99 per pound. So are Raley's costs that much higher, or just a rip-off. I will be buying my dry ice in Concord Safeway. 8/5/19

Lynn C.

Yelp
I am so disappointed in this store and it's manager! I am handicapped and had my food order done by internet for delivery. I ordered a sandwich for my tonight's dinner. When I received my groceries, I opened my sandwich to eat it for dinner. The bread is hard as a rock, like it has been sitting out for 2 to 3 days. I called the store, spoke with the manager and he refunded the price of two sandwiches. I explained that this was a delivery but he was unwilling to send me another sandwich. Great, now I go without dinner tonight because of a very inconsiderate manager. I will not shop here again. Buyers, beware!

Nancy B.

Yelp
Tried to get a latte from the coffee counter at Raleys, but none of the people working the coffee counter knew how to make anything. They could only pour plain coffee. This was at 9:00 am on a Monday morning. Raleys has gone downhill lately as this just reinforces my feeling about it. I have shopped here for years, but think it's time to change stores. Management isn't doing their job.

Yelp
I will never shop at Raley's again. Here's why: Thursday me and my 13 year old twins stopped in for some items for dinner. As I'm shopping my girls tell me " we are going to go get a cookie from the bakery." OK with me as I'm in the area selecting packages of turkey. I see my girls walk away from the bakery counter whispering to each other and immediately I say "what happened?" They turn toward me to explain "the lady at the counter told us that these cookies are for little kids only and that we should not ask for them anymore." My blood pressure rises. I ask my girls to show me the "lady" and I use that word loosely as I'd be more on target to describe her as an uptight cookie nazi - but whatever, my girls point her out. I walk to the cookie bitch in the bakery and shove my basket toward her telling her " i will do my shopping at Safeway where my kids can have a cookie for the asking..." I tossed this review around in my head for a while before writing it b'cuz I wondered if I was being petty - I mean after all its just a cookie, right? But as the old saying goes "its about principal" - so I wrote the damn review. While true, it is just a cookie its also the fact that there are no guidelines to cookie distribution. My girls are polite and have manners and damn it if I'm paying 15.00 (or more) for a 12-pack of beer I think the least you can do is kick my girls down a cookie without your rude ass attitude. I could see if my girls walked up and said "give me a cookie bitch" - I'd say no - but that was not the case. I'd rather shop at Winco where the produce is bad but the cookies are flowing or Safeway where I shop over budget but don't have to deal with cookie nazis. Raley's you should include a complimentary cookie just for your high prices! Raley's - YOU, YOUR HIGH PRICES AND YOUR CHUMP BAKERY BITCHES CAN KISS MY ASS.

Yelp
Raley's is great!! By far beats boring, mediocre Safeway. They have a great overall selection of food,ect.. Particularly there health food section.Everything from Organic food, low carb/low sugar foods, health and fitness DVDs and a broad selection of top quality vitamins and herbs. The store is always kept immaculately clean, bright, well organized and the service for the most part, is always very friendly and helful. They have particular items that I cannot get elsewhere and most of there brands / items are of a higher quality. That goes with the overall store. So much better than Safeway.

Yelp
I want to give recognition to Brianna in the bakery department. She has come through for me on great cakes and cupcakes for multiple special occasions . Raley's is lucky to have her . She always does exactly what I ask , and it not only looks wonderful , it tastes great. Thank you for employing such a nice and talented young lady . I appreciate her dedication and hard work.
