As Cities Mandate Hazard Pay for Grocery Workers, Groceries Sue | Eater

"One full‑service market tied to a national operator was slated for closure in Long Beach as part of the company’s response to a local ordinance; union leaders countered that sales at the affected store had increased roughly 30% during the pandemic and argued the shutdown was intended to send a message to other municipalities considering similar measures." - Brendan Seibel

Overall, the experience was great. Things were fairly easy to find, the parking was good, and I didn't have to look around for ages to park. I've been looking for this specific brand of ranch (Ken's buttermilk ranch), and I finally found it in this store. The staff were nice, pointed us in the right direction when lost on where stuff was. I paid a bit over $30 for all this and a bag of precut lettuce as well. I recomend coming here.

Google
Wonderful grocery store in Long Beach on 4th street. Has a Redbox Video Rental Kiosk in front. Even has a restroom in the back which is wonderful. You have to get the code from the workers. Great produce and a wide selection of many kinds of food. The prices are competitive as well. I am always pleased shopping there. The employees are very kind and I love the neighborhood where the store is located. The 4th street bus stops right in front of the store on the corner. Even has a crosswalk with flashing lights so you can cross 4th street safely. I give it 5/5. I will always shop there. They have my business 100%.

I love everything about this location, Ive been comimg here for years. But your employee Maria is just awful. She is always extremely rude, but last week I couldn't figure out how to clip a coupon on my Ralph's app and she was talking to me like I was a child. Saying I felt humiliated is an understatement.

Smaller Ralphs, so everything is packed. Can get busy, or at least seem busy because it’s small. Parking is also a little tight. It’s in a nice neighborhood, but you’ll still get the weirdos hanging out front.

Mom needed to use the restroom but we were directed to the upstairs employee area, seemed weird and then we were never given the code for the door. Luckily I tracked down a security officer for the code but he didn't know the women's code. He was very nice and made sure the mens bathroom was cleared to let her use it. Good guy! We eventually purchased our groceries. And left but I think they should have a handicapped accessible bathroom on ground floor. Btw the wheelchair access elevator was "out of order" luckily I was able to help her up the stairs. Staff was so-so. Not helpful but not mean. Other than the security guard. He even mentioned he was not a Ralphs employee just a contractor

During an impossible stressful situation for me, the staff is very friendly and have made it bearable. Clean & fairly quiet. Nice owners/managers ( important to me!😊)

Yelp
Convenient and easy to get in and out, that's why I like this place. Nothing special from other Ralph's but I appreciate that the place and parking got cleaner. Make sure you use your Ralph's card for discounts and specials.

Yelp
I always come to shop here for our groceries. The store is well stocked and organized! It's clean too! Staff is friendly and helpful. Food is fresh and there's a deli counter where I usually order fried chicken for our potlucks!! The fried chicken is always amazing! Crunchy on the outside and hot, tender and juicy in the inside! You can never go wrong with fried chicken! By the way! When you need to pick up some last minute flower bouquets they got 'em!!! Beautiful flowers and plants too! I totally recommend this place!
google avatar

Maria H.

Yelp
I always shop at this store. Really clean organized. As I was shopping and looking around the flower bouquets for my daughter birthday. I grabbed a small birthday plastic ballon. One of their employee walked by and made an unnecessary rude comment and said to me "make sure you pay for that"instead of asking me do I need help?

Yelp
I honestly don't understand why the ratings for this Ralph's are so low--this place is an absolute lifesaver! It may not be as big as a full-sized Ralph's, but it has everything you actually need, and the convenience of having it right in the middle of the neighborhood makes it unbeatable. One of the things I appreciate most is that when other stores are out of essentials, this Ralph's somehow still has them. When you can't find eggs anywhere? They have eggs. When toilet paper was impossible to get? They had toilet paper. It's those little things that make all the difference, especially when you're in a pinch. Beyond the convenience, the staff here is very nice and helpful. Whether it's assisting with finding an item or just greeting you with a smile, they make the shopping experience feel personal and welcoming. It's refreshing to walk into a store where employees actually seem to care about their customers. I also love how innovative this location is. They've figured out a way to maximize space while still offering a great selection of everyday necessities. The self-checkout options make grabbing what you need even faster, and I've rarely had a frustrating shopping experience here. If you're expecting a massive supermarket, this isn't it--but if you're looking for a well-stocked, reliable, and super convenient grocery store with friendly staff, this Ralph's is perfect. I truly love having this spot in the neighborhood!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my local supermarket in my community and neighborhood. Was surprised to see them closed on Christmas Day! But still it is our friendly supermarket and the staff are all kind and helpful. They sell fresh veggies and meat galore! The cool thing is the expert staff keep the expiration dates and when it expires, so we may benefit from the markdowns.!! Appreciate it!! Great store and great staff make it so helpful to come and shop! Clean store and delicious food makes it our first choice!

Yelp
The store is within easy walking distance from where I live. I can't understand why they don't keep hand baskets near the entrance. I have to look near the exitmor self check out or at the registers for hand baskets. It seems stupid that they can't figure out how to have hand baskets for people when they walk in.
google avatar

Kellie B.

Yelp
You can't really talk about service at this location, because it is non-existent. I had to buy some beer the other day and wondered how it would be possible since they only offer self checkout most of the time. Of course it was a hassle. You have to flag down an employee and the alcohol has to be rung up separately. Even though the employee was called for me, they helped 2 other customers before me. However what's REALLY INTERESTING is that at the "nice" Ralph's on PCH (where wealthy people shop) there are always plenty of cashiers to ring customers up. You're paying the same high prices and receiving shit service because you shop in a less desirable neighborhood. I only shop at this store when I absolutely have to.
google avatar

Bryan P.

Yelp
Everything is moved. Nothing makes sense anymore. Half of the things I used to buy here were in the same aisle. Like coffee and hot chocolate. But coffee is with bread and fruit snacks, while hot chocolate is four aisles away. I'll not be coming back here anymore. Heading to Von's now.
google avatar

Jay M.

Yelp
I feel like this store is prejudice and I've only been here twice since living in Long Beach. First incident was on a Sunday June 16th. The guy was ringing me up and I left the case of water in the basket ( which is visible ) and he told me he would scan it just leave it in the basket. The nosey cashier turns around and says " don't forget to scan the water" like mind your business and maintain that long line. 2nd incident was today at self check out .. I was getting stuff for spaghetti and the attendant was holding my basket as if I was going to run off. Babe if I wanted to steal spaghetti I woulda decked u in the face. The basket wouldn't have stopped anything. Fortunately I have a great paying job that most likely makes three times more than you make and I can afford to buy groceries. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk .

C F.

Yelp
All I have to say right now is CHECK YOUR RECEIPT! Some of the cashiers overcharge, don't add discounts, don't add your club card number to the total, and don't give the correct discounts on wine.

Dolly D.

Yelp
My favorite grocery store! Clean and smaller than the other ones but a really convenient spot esp if you live in the neighborhood. Oh, allll of the employees are very kind.
google avatar

Jasmin H.

Yelp
I literally was paying for my groceries and the blonde baggage clerk made a comment, "ive seen worse" like ma'am why're you judging me and making unnecessary comments.
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
Meh, not my favorite Ralph's store. Iy is a bit older. They have made some upgrades to keep up with the other stores. The checkout stands are really small. Still, if you are downtown and want your Kroger brand items, it isn't the worst. I'm not liking the sidewalk is being overtaken by a mobile taqueria. But Long Beach allows this nonsense.
google avatar

S W.

Yelp
I just witnessed this store being robbed by 3 people and the get away truck almost ran me over in the parking lot. A customer and I tried to help and alert the store but store declined to take any action. No wonder this store prices are so high here! I will no longer be patronizing this store due to their lax policies against thieves.
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
There are 3 things that I like about this Ralph's 1. self checkout that accepts APPLE PAY finally this happened a few months ago 2. This is a secret I don't want to tell people but they have a fantastic clearance section next to the fish counter with great discounts on baked goods at over 50% off 3. Small scale makes it very easy to find things compared to other larger sized supermarkets
google avatar

Jolanta M.

Yelp
You can always tell a nice grocery store from their produce section. Now, I'm from the south and I'm a fan of Ralph's parent company Kroger's. So, this was my first time in Ralph's but I felt right at home. This is a smaller store, but it has all I need. All the produce is better on the west coast!!! If/When I'm in the area again, I'll definitely stop by.

Gary W.

Yelp
I had an unfortunate experience today shopping at Ralph's on East 4th street. What d is really not the issue. The review is for an amazing store manager who was clearly swamped with "duties." Through a normal course of a day, I truly do not know what a store manager goes through, but if paperwork is a top priority, I don't know how Heather is able to do that also. Listening to all the issues and calls like a bee to a flower, Heather not only took care of my issue, overseeing curbside delivery, and answering employee pages. Thank you Heather for the customer service you deliver. If we had a fraction of people like you working in the customer service field, there would be more satisfying experiences and people. You are a shining light.
google avatar

Dan S.

Yelp
Yuk. Dimly lit, dirty and old, yucky looking meat and fish. The only supermarket within 10 or 12 blocks and a captive audience. So crummy I felt a moral obligation to honestly and kindly tell the manager my observations. It was crowded so I left before I could talk to the manager. The last time I was in such a putrid market was 25 years ago in downtown 29 palms. Yeah, that bad.
google avatar

Yelp
On this Christmas Eve morning Heather, the store manager was rude, unhelpful, and flat out disgusting towards me when I needed help with a money order. I needed a large money order to pickup my car from the collision repair shop. Vons would only do $3000 and I needed $4000 more to get my car from the shop. First heather said how much do you need? I said $4000. She said "with that large amount I need two forms if ID". I said, Vons didn't need that, which is when she learned Vons already sold me a one money order for $3K. Regardless of the hassle I said I'll go home and get my second form of ID and will be right back, but this is when heather's rules changed. When she learned I got the $3K money order from Vons already, she said, "now I'm going to refuse service to you because you have too much money on you." HOW IS THAT ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS HEATHER? Then heather went on her little power trip and said I am the store manager and have the right to refuse you service. You can leave now and snidely said merry Christmas. Thanks for nothing heather. Thanks for making an honest situation a bad experience. Thanks for being the giant road block that kept me from picking up my car from the body shop for the holiday weekend. Thank you for showing me I would never want to shop at "your" store. I hope no one else today has to encounter your rude and poor customer service. Heather was as rude, unhelpful, and on a sad and pitiful power trip.

Yelp
Whoever runs the bakery department should start their own business! The everything croissants and jalapeño bolillos are delicious. All the muffins are as well. Way better than any other Ralph's or grocery chain around!

Erica C.

Yelp
I visited the seafood counter today at 6:20PM ! Absolute worst service. Not only did I wait 10 min to be tended to with no one in line, he never said sorry for the wait. I asked for two pieces of salmon no problem and then when I went to ask for a $5.99 lobster tail he tells me I have to pay for it all the way in the front then return. I do so and when I return there is a huge line. He saw me shrugged and proceeded to tend to other customers. This interaction alone makes me not want to shop here again even though its my neighborhood store. The inconvenience for a lobster tail just isn't worth it.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
If they stay open til 1:00 then don't lock the doors at 12:45. I have watched 6 people try to get in and get denied. I get that 6 people and their minuscule mContribution isn't going to shut this place down but the inconsistency and the attitude you get when you are lucky enough to make it before they decide to lock the doors makes the whole place reflect badly on Ralph's otherwise good reputation. I work off hours and when I rush to this location instead of another only to get shut down means I don't have food to feed my dogs before I have to be at work again in a few hours. Very disappointing. I would've gone to a different location had I known the hours of operation are loose guidelines.
google avatar

Erica T.

Yelp
This Ralph's is not as nice as the one on PCH. The store is nice but it needs to be cleaner. By the main entrance smells like pee (and you can see the different trails of all pee as well), which can easily be clean with a high pressure water hose. It makes me very uneasy because I start thinking how dirty it is behind close doors, where customers can't see. I only get the essentials but I don't shop their deli at all
google avatar

Josh T.

Yelp
If you're looking for a grocery store that has visibly rotten meat on the shelves, rude employees with no customer service skills, disgusting restrooms, half the selection of most every other grocery store, and cashiers that don't even have the decency to say hello to you or make eye contact because of the color of your skin than you've come to the right place. Don't waste your time or energy. My suggestion is to drive to PCH and go to a real Ralph's where you don't get these issues. Not asking a lot here. Just run a clean shop and be polite. Is that asking so much?
google avatar

Annie B.

Yelp
I love this Ralph's the employees are always so nice and helpful. The produce guy helped me pick out a watermelon it was so sweet the best one I've had in a long time. It's in the middle of the neighborhood which makes it good for the neighbors. I will definitely return very soon

Andrea R.

Yelp
The manager literally refused to help us claiming she's going on a 2 hour lunch. Literally just an excuse to not do their damn job. Short Mexican lady with fried blonde hair.
google avatar

Eric C.

Yelp
Stopped in to buy food and liquor! We were in town for one love music fest , since our hotel had a kitchenette we bought some supplies. This is a nice store , it's tight , but well Stocked. Prices were right ! Would shop here again. Since this is a subsidiary of Kroger our shoppers card worked too. Nice plus

Yelp
A few months into the pandemic I recall wanting to write a review for markets for very similar reasons. My review pertains to my most recent visit. Working a customer facing job day in and day out can be different for every employee -- especially during a pandemic. Digital Payment: The digital payment system is not processing even Samsung payments lately. Bring a card or cash. Customer Service: Always on point. I always find an employee at a self checkout aisle ready to help. Products: The discount/sale for a cereal I like to buy is more common at the Vons at the Traffic Circle. Otherwise, the product selection is really good, and discounts for items I commonly buy tend to have decent discounts. The store is usually clean (including the bathroom). The aisles are easy to navigate, and big enough. The parking lot is a good size.
google avatar

Edmund R.

Yelp
its a regular ralphs nothing to point out the staffs are friendly i asked an employee where the restroom was and they were kind enought to tell me the code without hesitation. parking is spacious
google avatar

Randy A.

Yelp
I requested a sushi roll that is popular in restaurants. The clerk said he "doesn't do that". Well, ok then.
google avatar

Jack C.

Yelp
Staff are struggling very hard to understand the 6 foot rule. Three times, while in the aisles, while checking out, and after checkout by the security guard a staff member came to within 6inches or a foot of me from behind for no real reason. Like them otherwise, but they are not internalizing that there is a pandemic raging and they're putting customers (and themselves) in danger. Not to mention if they get a covid case they will have to shut down - you'd think they'd take this seriously.
google avatar

Jeremy F.

Yelp
I had the most horrible experience due to an employee named Linda. During my self checkout experience I was told that i can only buy as much stuff that's fits on the scale. I was denied bagging it until late. Once my stuff fell off the scale i was told that i bought to much stuff when i asked Linda how long she's been there she told me longer that you. If you don't like your job work somewhere else. Being a40 year customer of ralphs i will not return, the fact that you allow rude people to run the program and because they've been there so long allows them to treat customers however they want is crap. Im discouraged by this. I was limited on my shipping and when my fiod fell on the ground i was told to leave. Review your video.
google avatar

Yelp
Ugh this low budget Ralph's doesn't take Apple Pay. The isles are super small. The lines are always crazy long. Try to avoid this place!!

Farol R.

Yelp
I bought a burrito from the Deli section, there was a hair in it. I took a bite of on the burrito it felt like a rubber string got stuck in my teeth; I pulled it out an it was a long black hair longer then a foot. I'm still gross out.
google avatar

Mister S.

Yelp
Not great at customer service at all. I got to Ralph's at 12:54 am keep in mind they close at 1:00am so as I'm entering the store 2 employee comes up and says "NO we are closed" followed by a little security guard saying "yup we are closed sir" so I turned around and went back to my car and here I am writing a review on my treatment and experience I have received. I'm a happy guy and don't ever like to be negative hence I'm just stating facts of what happened. I am staying away from any negativity. Good luck to anyone that needs a gallon of milk last minute for breakfast in the morning.
google avatar

Alec H.

Yelp
I signed up for Ralphs new service ($75) free delivery if you order $40 or more in groceries, not including alcohol. Worked good for a while but I'm locked into the store on 4th in Long Beach Ca. which doesn't have everything I order. So my order drops below $40 when they cancel several of my items, then they charge me the $10.50 delivery fee. Huge bate and switch! Called customer service and turns out they can't refund all the extra charges, they preferred to give me my $75 back and lose me as a customer. Shopping at Vons now I guess! The customer service rep didn't even care, so sad.
google avatar

Jacob D.

Yelp
My least fave Ralph's although it is a few blocks away from where I live. Parking lot is atrocious (packed and so damn difficult to get in and out). Best bet is to do your grocery shopping bright and early when it opens up at 7am (8 @ the latest). Prices are generally reasonable and they do have a great wine selection. Employees are not always the friendliest, but I don't blame them with having to deal with all the foot traffic that rotates through their doors.

Yelp
Staff so nice last evening. Ño nasty front desk. Instead this...
google avatar

Jesse W.

Yelp
This store is large, organized, and clean. The staff that I spoke with was friendly. I used their bathroom and it was 90% clean and located upstairs which was inconvenient. The bathroom is located at the far left corner, at the back of the store (there's a sign). Their parking lot is large and well lit at night. This store is just like any Ralph's franchise supermarket. If I'm in the area, I will return here. #JesseWatrous #RalphsSuperMatket #RalphsSupermarketReview

Raymond S.

Yelp
I have been thoroughly disappointed in the service from this store. The employees seam to be getting ruder and less polite and helpful as time goes on. When I asked an employee about it. "He stated what do you want for 13 an hour".

Yelp
The 5 stars goes to Efrain in the deli department. Efrain knows his sandwiches like no other. Many thanks to you, sir!

Yelp
We just had the best experience here this morning thanks to Gaylen and his wonderful attitude and kindness. Any business would be lucky to have him as an employee!!!

Yelp
I shopped at Ralph's located at 6290 E. Pacific Coast Hwy. Long Beach on Tuesday 2/22/22 4:13 pm was my check out time. I also shopped there on Monday the 21st. On both occasions, I was overcharged on a produce and a weighable meat item. Their ad stated red, yellow and orange bell peppers were .87 cents with a digital coupon and shrimp was 5.27 a # also with digital coupon. Neither coupon was in the system and the peppers were charged at 1.49 each. Since the ad only ran through yesterday, I am guessing there were many customers overcharged on their purchases of those items. As a former grocery store employee in cashiering, management and data input of pricing, I know Weights and Measures used to be a big deal for pricing discrepancies. I do not know if that is the case but a lot of customers are being overcharged.  When I called the produce workers attention to the pepper he said, "OK, I'll let the front know". LAST DAY OF THE AD! I proceeded to the checkout, the cashier was Branden B. What a charmer! His demeaner was surly from the start, as if he'd rather be anywhere other than taking money from customer for their Ralph's purchases. The woman in front of me had two of the said bell peppers and when they rang up at regular price, she called it to his attention. He barked at her that "only the green peppers are .99!) When I tried to advise him otherwise (BTW, they ad with said pictures was on direct view from the entry door and there was a giant end cap with the peppers with an equally giant sign advertising their price.) Branden stormed back and informed her that "only the green peppers are on sale!" She left without the peppers and he angerly stuff them under the check stand. He used the same attitude with me and as a Ralph's shopper for over 30 years (check my dollar amount of purchases over the years), I have decided to drive a little further and shop at another competitor. P.S. As I passed his register on my way out, he was speaking tersely and impatiently to an elderly woman who was putting her payment card in backwards. Shame on Ralph's for a total lack of customer service training! P.P.S. I tried on three different occasions at three different times to contact a store director but the phone rang each time for several minutes and was never answered.
google avatar

Yelp
Out of the three Ralph's in Long Beach this is the best location to go to even though it's smaller with less variety but the customer service is great and I love getting my sushi and salmon and drinks from here
google avatar

Lorri G.

Yelp
**5 stars Strictly for Warren** This Ralphs is a 3 minute walk from my house, and i love it for that--but it is tiny and the parking lot sucks and they have 1/3 of the selection of any other grocery store. That being said, I come back for the employees. Gerry is the best human in the world, but this review is for Warren. I run an employment program for adults with disabilities, and on my grocery stop tonight I asked if they would be willing to donate a few extra bags to my program. Warren said "You're in here all the time." And donated a rather hefty stack of grocery bags to a great cause, without batting an eye. I love the service at this store. Thank you!!!
google avatar

Gigi P.

Yelp
Love this store! Friendly staff, clean store, they pack a lot for such a small location. I wish they would have more variety on some of the items but when they don't have it I just go to the one on PCH. Parking lot can be a mess if you stop by during the week after 4pm though. If you are local they have the bike station that you can use if you have a small purchase.

Yelp
8/100 Yelp Challenge 2016 A friend of mine keeps telling me "Ralph's is expensive, don't you have a cheaper grocery store near you?" Well, I suppose I do, but I'm always pleased with the selection at this Ralph's. I have several friends who go to multiple grocery stores to shop (one for produce, one for protein, one for blah blah specialty blah). Well, I must be lazy then, because I enjoy going to one place to shop for everything, and this is where I can get my needs and wants. Sure Ralph's prices may be a bit more expensive than some other grocery stores (hence only 4 stars), but I do appreciate their fresh salad bar, soups and OLIVES! They also have a nice selection of organic produce for relatively fair prices. Like kale. It's never more than 99 cents a bunch. So to answer your question friend of mine... One stop shopping. This is my neighborhood store!! Plus I love the check-out clerks, I always have great short conversations with them!

Yelp
Ivan Almeida front end manager all but ignores me every time I need help at the customer service booth. Today I patiently waited to send a western union And a Pretty girl came In To ask about a job and he stopped and talked to her for minutes while I stood there and No one even said hi to me as I waited for help This store is right around the corner from my home So aggravating Absolute worse
