The 31 Best Restaurants in Kolkata (Calcutta), India | Eater

"South Kolkata’s Lake Market area is home to the city’s South Indian population. Among the neighborhood’s eateries, you’ll find Sree Ramakrishna Lunch Home, housed on the ground floor of Bhupendra Mansion, which dates back to 1955. The place is particularly popular with morning walkers and joggers, who come for a filling and relatively healthy breakfast of pillowy, soft idlis, served with fiery podi or fresh coconut chutney, the latter crowned with a mound of fried lentils, mustard seeds, chiles, and curry leaves. There are also soft medu vadas (doughnut-shaped fritters), a variety of dosas, and decent filter coffee." - Priyadarshini Chatterjee

Review for Ramakrishna Lunch Home, Kolkata I had a disappointing experience at Ramakrishna Lunch Home. Upon arrival, there was a wait for a table, which is understandable for a popular spot. However, the owner sitting at the reception was extremely rude—he spoke loudly even when customers were just waiting in line. When I wanted to wash my hands, he started shouting instead of politely guiding me. His behavior lacked basic etiquette. The dining experience was not great either. The bowl for sambhar was too small, making it inconvenient to enjoy the meal properly. Moreover, the waiter kept standing near the table, constantly staring as if urging us to finish quickly. It made the whole experience quite uncomfortable. Overall, the food might be decent, but the service and atmosphere completely ruin it. Not worth the hassle. Wouldn’t recommend unless they seriously improve their hospitality.

ABSOLUTELY TRASH OF A MANAGER+reduced food quality on busy days! Manager has no manners. If you are visiting on a busy day, BE CAREFUL OF YOUR TURN because the manager will simply put forward his known customers before you! His behavior with all customers who are not from the local area, is extremely rude and disrespectful. He runs this place like this is some political party office - he decides which customers will have free rein, can roam around to see the "new section", choose tables, while and which customers will keep waiting endlessly. Made us 3(me, ma and my old grandmother) wait endlessly where he pushed forward 2 families ahead of us whom he was pally with. we stood confused thinking they had come before us, only to realize we have been fooled. He made ma & dadi walk around shifting 3 tables coz his favored customers came later and chose our table. Then he bluntly refused that a couple has been pushed forward to a table of 4 while larger groups waited, even after coming early. Now, the food. chutney was watery and dosa was way thinner than they usually give- just taking advantage of a house full day and serving under quality food. Instead of butter in dosa, they have given this white frozen oily lump which didn't melt al throughout our food. THIS WAS NOT BUTTER BUT SOME LOW QUALITY STUFF.They even agree "woh adha melt hota hai, adha rehta hai."Which butter stays firm and becomes a a creamy thing even after rubbing hard??Trying to pass off some word white thing as the famous white butter we all eat on parathas which melt instantly on hot food. So beware of the food as well

Ramakrishna Lunch Home serves delicious South Indian meals with authentic flavors. The food is fresh and reasonably priced. Service is quick and friendly, though the place can get crowded during peak hours. A great spot for homely, satisfying food.

Best South Indian restaurant in Kolkata. I love the Ghee Rava Dosa, Podi Idli and filter coffee. Their sambar is one of the best in Kolkata. I usually visit here for breakfast. But I avoid Sunday. The waiting time is too much and I can't enjoy my food while people are giving me death stares to finish my food for the next group to sit. It's better to visit on weekday mornings to enjoy your meal.

If you are looking for no frills place that serves delicious south Indian dishes like dosa, idli and utthapam, you may want to visit this restaurant. This restaurant has been around for few decades and known for its authentic cuisine and reasonably priced food.

Absolutely hopeless masala dosa. The idlis are still soft and hot. The receptionist is highly RUDE. For what reasons does he have so much attitude!? Hasnt he learnt something called customer service and hospitality being in a business which needs it? Banana leaf or Raj restaurant he way better than this place if you want good hot dosas.

Visited on Sunday morning for Brunch. After waiting for 20 mins without any que system got hold of a table. This needs to be improved & a proper que management needs to be done. Food - My review of food could be biased as I've been eating authentic South Indian cuisine since school at my South Indian friends. Onion Uttapam - Oily & average taste. Idly - 2 pieces per plate was very soft & good. Sambar was poor, Chutney very good. Onion masala Dosa - Oily & masala tasteless. Ghee Paper masala Dosa - Oily & masala tasteless. Wada - Average Fried Idly - Below average. Coffee - Average. Service & Staff - Very courteous & efficient. Atmosphere - Needs to be seriously upgraded, hand wash area to neat and clean. Location - Easily can be spotted. One request to the management - Please change the taste as this is ok for people who have not been to south India but this is not authentic considering the price. Will visit again to give a 2nd review. =========== My 2nd visit on a weekday at 9am. No crowd. Pody idly was good. Masala dosa was cold, most likely made for someone else and served me. Still I'm not convinced. Thet don't have that taste.
