Ramen Chikumo - Review - Sawtelle - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Sawtelle’s ramen monopoly just grew stronger with the arrival of another chain from Tokyo. Chikumo is known for their hearty chicken paitan broth simmered for eight hours. There’s a yuzu ramen, a spicy ramen called the Inferno, and a vegan ramen with cashew broth and porcini mushrooms. Appetizers include the ramen shop standards like edamame, karaage, and gyoza." - Cathy Park

Absolutely amazing ramen! The chicken-based broth is incredibly rich and flavorful — it feels like the kind of trendy, modern ramen that’s taking off these days. The toppings, like yuzu, onion, and green onion, add a refreshing balance that makes every bite enjoyable. There are even two different kinds of chicken on top, which gives a nice variety in taste and texture. It’s a perfectly crafted bowl that shows real attention to detail. The restaurant itself is spotless and stylish, making the whole experience even better. Highly recommended!

When you find out that ramen has chicken broth, it kinda throws you off a bit because you know you won't get that rich flavor you are craving for. I was totally wrong once my boyfriend and I tried Ramen Chikumo for the first time. We tried this place out when they had the weekend special during their grand opening. For a newly opened restaurant, the service was exceptional! The ambiance is laid back and definitely a place where you can enjoy your food while having conversations with loved ones. The ramen was definitely rich and flavorful, almost impossible to think that it was made out of chicken broth!

I really wanted to like Ramen Chikumo, but unfortunately, it was a miss for us tonight. We had high hopes, especially on a winter evening. After a ton of shopping and running errands, a bowl of ramen in Sawtelle would be the perfect first meal to replenish ourselves and get cozy. When we first walked in, the bar was set high. The place felt like a modern spa, literally, and the music that was playing really put me at ease. Out of all the ramen restaurants in Los Angeles, I think this place had one of the best interior designs, hands down, especially with the wall slates. The other thing that was a major hit was our sweet, patient, and kind server. She constantly checked in and was just overall a delight the entire night. My partner and I each got a bowl of the Signature Rich Chicken Broth and a plate of the Handmade Pan-fried Gyoza to share. I know it's unfair to judge by appearances, but when our ramen bowls were first brought to us, the toppings felt thrown on without much meticulous care and attention. The soft-boiled egg was also poorly peeled in both bowls. Again, I didn't want to ding them too hard and decided to roll up my sleeves, eager for a bite. The broth was just okay, not great, but not bad either, and really salty. I've had a fair amount of chicken-based ramen over the years, and unfortunately, this was a miss for us. On the other hand, the Handmade Pan-fried Gyoza was delicious and juicy, had a ton of flavor, and the skin was paper-light. I do think Ramen Chikumo has potential, but it isn't quite there yet, and I would be open to coming back again.

Google
The shop looks really posh inside. The signature ramen is thick chicken paitan ramen. I personally prefer firm noodles. I’ll order that next time. The plating is top rate. Gyoza $8 - I think it was decent . I was not a fan of the sweet sauce that it came with Tsukemen - I loved the noodles it was served with. The dipping broth however was too light for what it is.

Google
Delicious. Broth is outstanding. Lots of flavor and it's a bit thicker than most broths. I absolutely love it. This location is very clean and staff is friendly. The price is reasonable. Definitely a place to try.

Google
Spicy Garlic Edamame is the best in LA. Period! Their house made garlic sauce with honey elevated the edamame's taste. The thing I loved about this new ramen place was that the staff is so friendly and welcome you with warmth. Being a vegan there weren't many options at this place but to my surprise since the staff couldn't let me walk away especially cause they had recently opened and offered me the edamame on the house. 100 points for living up to the customer experience. Would love to back here for the edamame and hopefully a vegan ramen

Google
I stopped by on Sunday night with my wife. We tried the Roast Beef Ramen, the Signature Ramen, and the Tsukemen with spicy paste everything was amazing. I’ve never had ramen like that before. All the servers were very friendly, and the manager took great care of us. Great spot with very comfortable table seating.

Google
The overall atmosphere is very clean and spacious. I ordered the signature chicken broth ramen. The broth is creamy but flavor wise it’s dashi forward instead of chicken. The texture of chicken breast is fantastic, tender and the fiber provides almost crispy mouthfeel, possibly through slow cooking. The downside is that chicken is somewhat cold when served and the yuzu garnish used seems from honey yuzu tea instead of fresh yuzu peel. Other than that, the service speed is also fast, which is great for a quick meal.

Yelp
Love this spot! Food is 10/10, vibes is 11/10! Thank you Stella for the amazing service!

Yelp
Great service and ramen was great! Ordered salad and fries. Both were excellent. Would return and try other items. Ambiance was great.

Yelp
I got their signature ramen and a few appetizers. The broth was super rich but not too heavy, and honestly unlike anything I've had before -- so good! The chicken chashu was really tender too. For the appetizers, the chicken karaage with tartar sauce and the roast beef were my favorites. The staff were all super friendly and made me feel really welcome. Definitely my favorite ramen restaurant in Sawtelle!

Yelp
It's a newly opened shop in Sawtelle. Our waitress Stella is very nice and accommodating, she takes good care of us. We tried the signature, inferno and Tsukemen, they are all delicious. The internal soup has good taste, especially with the hot paste. The thick noodles of the Tsukemen has good texture. Their chicken is tender and the pork chashu is very good, different from many other places.

Yelp
I go to Japan frequently and I love the taste of yuzu. Ramen Chikumo's yuzu shio hit perfectly and I even enjoyed the yuzu pickled cucumber appetizer. I was surprised to see it. My server Nathan was very kind and thorough in explaining the menu. My only criticism so far is that some condiments cost $2 extra. I understand charging extra for extra toppings like more noodles, but usually condiments are provided to make a dish spicier. Everything was tasty so far and there's more to try, so I will return. My favorite dessert spots are right around the corner, too. Thank you!

Yelp
I came here for the grand opening and was pretty impressed. Food: The side dishes were solid (Gyoza, Karaage, Roast beef). The roast beef was my favorite as it paired so well with the fried garlic! I tried a few different ramen options: 1. Signature Rich Chicken Broth- Served with chicken and pork. The broth was creamy, flavorful, and not overly fatty. 2. "Tsukemen" Rich Dipping Ramen- Also served with chicken and pork. The dipping broth was rich but still felt balanced, not greasy. 3. Yuzu Citrus Shio- Served with chicken. A lighter, refreshing option with a subtle citrus aroma. 4. Spicy Inferno- Served with pork. This one's the spicy version of the chicken broth. Be careful if you go above mild! My friend, who usually handles spice well, was panting and sweating halfway through. *The chicken was impressively soft and tender. You really have to taste it to understand how good it is. Service: Good! We didn't have to wait long after ordering. Special shoutout to Mason and Nathan for being so friendly and attentive. Ambiance: Clean space with a well thought out seating design. Hopefully there would be outdoor seating after the grand opening!

Yelp
Tried this place to go.we got the creamy cashew and porcini and the signature rich chicken ramen. The cashew and porcini one was preferred. The chicken one felt a bit too rich. We were both a little underwhelmed and for the price. We do acknowledge that we got the ramen to go and it may be a different experience to eat in the restaurant and willing to try it again in that setting.

Yelp
With all the ramen spots on sawtelle , it's hard to stand out against the strong ramen competition in the area. Ramen chikumo i will have to say ended up in the middle ground. Very flavorful but not necessarily memorable. Had the Signiture rich chicken broth ramen and homemade gyoza. The rich chicken broth was in fact RICH. It coated my mouth in a layer of what felt like fat. Not necessarily my favorite feeling but very flavoful. Added an egg for extra $3, which was a bit pricey. The gyoza was good but again nothing to rave about. The biggest pit fall for me was actually the menu. It's a very clean menu but I feel like it lacked some description. For instance, the Rich broth ramen came with chicken but also chasu aka pork. I personally avoid pork, but the menu did not state there was any pork in the ramen just that it had classic toppings. Same with the gyoza I had no idea if it had pork or chicken. If you do want to know what meat is in the dishes you have clarify with the server. So if you don't eat pork make sure to ask the server. All in all I would come here if I needed something quick and easy.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in a strip mall near the freeway. There's plenty of free parking and the Ramen is homemade and fresh. Juwie was an outstanding waitress. Their Signature chicken ramen was so good that I ordered a second one to take home. Also the dumplings. Seaweed salad and cucumber was fresh. They will be getting their liquor license shortly.

Yelp
New ramen restaurant on Sawtelle, great chicken based ramen soup menu. Food was excellent, our server Stella was very attentive and overall service was solid. Highly recommend

Yelp
Enjoyed the yuzu citrus shio ramen with a side of spicy chili paste. Also had the sausage spring rolls with creamy sriracha sauce as an appetizer. Nathaniel provided great service and background about the restaurant. The ambiance is very modern and comfortable. I will come back.
google avatar

Charlize T.

Yelp
New ramen spot with classic tonkotsu and tsukemen. The broth actually tastes close to what I'm used to more in Tokyo. (There's usually a few broth missing in the ramen in the US) Service is great and the store is pretty nice looking too.
google avatar

Clinton Q.

Yelp
I had the yuzu citrus shio ramen, gyoza and the seaweed salad. I love yuzu and the ramen was delicious. The other dishes were all very good as well. The service from Juwie was excellent and very attentive. By the way, there is parking underground and they validate for 90 minutes.

Yelp
I visited for their grand opening and tried the Yuzu Citrus Shio Ramen and the Deep-Fried Gyoza. The place itself is very nice, with a cozy ambiance and really kind and attentive staff. I was in a party of 4 and almost missed my spot in line since we didn't hear them call my name but the staff was kind to let us in as soon as we realized our mistake. The food was delicious! The Gyoza was my favorite, super crispy and flavorful. Since it was their first day, not all dishes on the menu were available, but I will be back to try more once they are settled! Really recommend the place!
google avatar

Yu A.

Yelp
Signature chicken ramen is alright, soup is decent, however the chicken is chewy and dry. Tsukemen soup was blend, not recommend ordering it. We ordered seasoned egg but it was just a normal soft boiled egg for $3, no flavor at all. Karage chicken was dry as well. We won't be back here again.

Yelp
As a fan of chicken broth ramens, decided to give this place a try after hearing that it had just recently opened. Ordered the signature rich chicken broth ramen which had a rich dashi/chicken flavor and was comforting as I expected. The toppings were nice and I especially liked the chopped onions. The meat slices were also tender and flavorful. Noodle texture was good as well. Overall 8/10, solid chicken broth ramen. Did everything right but not blown away. Also ordered karaage appetizer, which was juicy on the inside and crispy on the outside with good flavor. Would order this again.

Yelp
Had the shaken fries with soy butter, signature chicken ramen, roast beef and the tsukemen. Everything was delicious and the waitress Stella was very helpful!
google avatar

Derek N.

Yelp
we got the chicken karaage and handmade pan fried gyoza for appetizers. for the entree we got the signature, rich chicken broth ramen, and the yuzu citrus shio ramen. For the signature Ramen, it was good however there was a distinct chard/burnt flavor from the pork chashu that tasted a bit off. both the chicken and the pork were cooked perfectly and was deliciously soft, sort of as if it were sous vide. The appetizers were my favorite. However, the handmade Giza was cooked perfectly and pretty flavorful while the crispy chicken match perfectly with the spicy mayo. Overall, a really good Ramen spot and the service was good, the hostess was really kind and also the waiter was as well. The ambience of the restaurant was very modern and nice, really clean as well. It was super busy with about 15 people ahead of us where we waited about 30 minutes, not bad at all. Definitely coming back here since the price was about $12 for everything with that amount of food.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
The ramen here is fantastic! The broth is rich and flavorful, and the noodles have a perfect chew. Stella, our server, was friendly and the service is quick.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Great new chicken ramen place that I actually like. Creamy broth with soft and tender meats that soaked in the broth very well.
google avatar

Brent R.

Yelp
Tried out the signature ramen and it's so tasty I drank the soup to the last drop. The roast beef was pretty good but next time I want to try the gyoza instead. The egg is perfectly cooked soft boiled but unseasoned. The restaurant itself is beautiful clean and has a great vibe. All the servers are super friendly!

Thomas L.

Yelp
Saw that this place just opened and wanted to try it! There's not too much seating in the venue and it's pretty bright for a ramen shop. The food tastes amazing! And my friend on the right ordered the citrus shio, which was also good. The food is a little bit pricier, especially when considering the other ramen options in Sawtelle. The roast beef wagyu is good but also a little pricey for 6 thin pieces. The only pain point was that taking our order was a bit longer than we expected it to be. Also, the ramens did not come together so there was a bit of awkward time where one person was eating but others were waiting.
google avatar

Alan C.

Yelp
Stella is so sweet took care of us, the broth was great and I love the succulent bar, try out this new Taiwanese Japanese ramen bar!
google avatar

Isabel C.

Yelp
Estella was very attentive to our table, even when we had someone thirty minutes late to our table. I got the signature dish, the chicken broth was very good!

Satsuki M.

Yelp
It was my first time eating here today (soft opening)! We ordered 4 ramen. I thought I was getting thicker noodles but it was just more noodles (Kaedama). The Tsukemen broth comes hot or cold. Flavor of the soup was light but very rich and creamy. And cold. We didn't received everything we ordered. One person was just sitting and waiting for 2 hours and they told us something is broken after 2 hours of waiting. The ice cream was very refreshing after the ramen but it was ice cream. It's a nice spot to come if you want to wait 1or more hours just sitting there. I'm sorry but I cannt recommend this place.
google avatar

Ellie H.

Yelp
Went for a soft opening, the food was very good. I don't usually like chicken ramen because the broth is light, but their broth was so rich and creamy. I ordered the spicy ramen and my table got karaage with gyoza. Everything was piping hot and delicious. If I had to nitpick one thing, it's that they served my ramen before even the appetizers so by the time my table got their ramen I was already done. But soft opening is for working out kinks so I can forgive it.

Robert L.

Yelp
The broth is the staple of any acceptable Ramen. Ramen Chikumo has a fine chicken broth boiled down to the bones, rich but also a bit bland. Tender white meat chicken slices distinguish this from the pork most Ramen restaurants use as their meats. But the Ramen didn't contain a lot of vegetables or additions that many other places had. Everything is a "add-on, "and at an $18 base, that is a somewhat pricy Ramen already. The best add-on was chili flakes to liven up the broth. There are half a dozen Ramen places on Sawtelle and many other restaurants that serve Ramen on the side. It is easy to get good Ramen. The best ones, Killer Noodles and Torisoba Sumiya, are highly distinctive, the former with its spices and many additives (without paying extra) and the latter with its truly unique charbroiled chicken which flavors the entire broth. The price points are pretty similar. The value is very different. I think Ramen Chikumo does not stand out well enough in a West LA neighborhood full of top Ramen choices. Service was excellent, worthy of 5 stars. Clean, modern and attractive setting. 5 stars for that as well The food just doesn't stand out enough.

Bryan P.

Yelp
Loved it had the light broth and had a great time Finished the bowl The broth was so light and citrusy and the noodles were well made The team was so inviting and attentive

Really good creamy ramen. Very nice space with good service. Nice addition to Sawtelle. Shout out to Stella.

Yelp
When we walked into this restaurant the staff was all very welcoming. Everyone gave us their attention and I felt invited in. We were a party of 7 and were given the biggest booth, with an additional member given their own comfortable chair. Our waiter Patrick sat us right away and asked us if we were interested in anything to drink before we even opened our menu. The rest of the night, all our finished plates were removed right away and Patrick kept checking in on us with our food orders and if we were interested in anything else. When we asked server Andres for anything that he would recommend in passing, he suggested cheese sticks for the kids and the wagyu for a first time taste. Varied options in food ! I liked the different appetizers and how there was something for everyone. As for the main course, we all selected ramen. I wanted something unique and I got just that with the creamy cashew. I would recommend it to anyone looking for something hearty and filling. Overall, this is a great place to feast for lunch or dinner as there is lots of food to choose from and a little of something for everyone. Don't forget to end the night with some matcha and brown sugar ice cream at this place.

Brian W.

Yelp
Went during the soft opening, got several dishes including the garlic edamame, shake shake fries, wagyushu beef sushi, and the tsukemen. The tsukemen noodles were very good, with the right texture, but the broth needed to be a little hotter when it came out (I'd chalk this up to it being the soft opening). The beef sushi was unique and it was fun to make your own hand rolls.
google avatar

Josh W.

Yelp
Ramen was really good!! Broth is a bit on the thicker side than what I'm used to from my days in Japan. However, flavor was on point and Nathan did a solid job as our server.

Yelp
Was totally surprised by how delicious the chicken ramen broth is! Got the signature minus white onion plus an egg. Nathan was great.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night for some ramen and it was delicious! I had the signature chicken ramen and it was super flavorful. The service was also top notch. The servers were all very attentive and remembered small details which I appreciated
google avatar

Yelp
Adorable restaurant on Sawtelle Blvd! I loved the pan fried dumplings and the cod roe cheese sticks! The servers were so kind and attentive
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
You're welcomed in their native tongue which is nice. Waiting for the food to be brought to you seemed like a short time between 5-15 minutes but this is including the appetizers and entrees. The vibes were up to date with a bit of a classy touch. The spicy garlic edamame and shake shake fries was delicious. I suggest if you like spicy ramen make sure to go for "spicy" and not mild because you'll need more chili paste to get more heat. I look forward to returning to this place.
google avatar

Jeffrey S.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken ramen which was so delicious that I finished it in 5 minutes! Stella was very attentive and an excellent server. The ambiance also reminds me of a trendy sleek ramen joint in the streets of Ginza. Would highly recommend and I will likely return :)

Kinga B.

Yelp
Ramen is delicious! Very friendly atmosphere - staff was very friendly and attentive (especially Stella). Clean and good quality. Will be back!

Yelp
Yummy bowl of ramen. I got the spicy inferno (level 2, which had the right amount of heat for me). Broth and toppings ate pretty unique, especially compared to the other ramen restaurants around here, but good flavor!Very clean restaurant and nice staff. Would come back again.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Great chicken tonkotsu style ramen, super creamy and tastes great. Service was fast and friendly too.

Yelp
Visited here during the grand opening. We had the signature chicken broth and spicy inferno. The broth was unique and rich. Spicy level was just good for me. I would come again even after the grand opening

Yelp
Quick service, nice ambiance and unique flavors. Thoroughly enjoyed the citrus flavors.

Yesul O.

Yelp
Had original ramen and spicy inferno ramen with karaage and pan fried gyoza. Loved their thin noodle and broth was thick and flavorful.
