13 Spots Ladling Out Truly Satisfying Ramen in Montreal

"The South Shore outpost of this small Toronto chain — the first outside of Ontario — boasts 14 ramen options. These range from spicy red miso and tonkotsu broth to an assari shoyu variety with a light soy sauce and seafood dashi stock, plus the tsukemen style (where noodles are served dry to dip into broth). Japanese-born chef Koji Zenimaru, who moved to Vancouver in 2004 before heading to Toronto, helms the venture, which now also boasts a Plateau location." - Valerie Silva, Ivy Lerner-Frank

Toronto’s Ramen Isshin Opens on Montreal’s South Shore | Eater Montreal

"On the South Shore I welcomed the opening of Ramen Isshin at Dix30, marking the six‑year‑old Toronto noodle shop’s first expansion outside the city. Isshin oscillates between classics and less‑common takes: their signature spicy red miso ramen features wok‑fried noodles in a tonkotsu broth, while a light-coloured shoyu (soy sauce) ramen and a shio ramen—given extra sesame flavour—round out the traditional options. For something more out of the box there’s tantan ramen, a spicy, black‑sesame‑tinted dark soup loosely comparable to Sichuan dan dan noodles. Prices are affordable (around $14–$15 for a hearty bowl), and various reviews of the Toronto originals have been notably positive. I also appreciated the large selection of vegetarian ramens (including a roasted garlic shoyu and a spicy red miso) and the izakaya‑style bites such as karaage, takoyaki and pan‑fried gyoza. Founded by Japanese‑born chef Koji Zenimaru—who moved to Vancouver in 2004, opened izakaya Kingyo in Toronto in 2012 and launched the first Isshin in 2013—the brand appears set for further expansion; hours at the Dix30 location are currently variable." - Tim Forster

Google
Had the red miso ramen and it was excellent. The broth was well balanced lightly spicy and sweet with great aromatics. The addition of carrots was a nice touch. The broth to noodle ratio was also on point which seems to be a miss in other places. Also had the Karaage chicken and it was ok, a bit too oily. The edamame had garlic powder which was an interesting addition. Overall recommended.

Google
Their strawberry shaved ice was really good! I had the tsukemen (dipping noodles) ; I just found out you're not supposed to drink the soup, only dip it! It was very good

Google
the place is a bit too dark, a bit too small, still ok to sit down. For the ramen, soup based is very good, not too salty, we don't find thristy after the meal. Ramen itself is chewable, not soft. Also, it is so fun to grind the seasame.

Google
Really enjoyed my visit to Ramen Isshin in Brossard. The service was friendly and quick, and the atmosphere is cozy without being too loud or crowded. I tried the Black Garlic Shio ramen and it was amazing—super flavorful without being too heavy. The broth had great depth and the noodles were cooked just right. Definitely recommend that one if you're not sure what to try. Will be coming back for sure!

The staff deserve special recognition for their attentiveness and knowledge. Our server patiently explained unfamiliar dishes and offered thoughtful recommendations based on our preferences. The food arrived promptly, and was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Google
First time here. Took the tsukemen (dipping noodles) it was a big portion and it was very delicious. Will be back to ry other things. Love the fact that they play Japanese music in the restaurant and that they say "arigatou gozaimasu " when clients leave. Gives you the Japanese feeling.

Google
I arrived around 1pm a sunday and it was still packed. It stayed that way until 2pm. After ordering, the food arrives quickly. I got the seafood okonomiyaki with the ship ramen. Both were very good and I was stuffed at the end. The broth was rich but not too overpowering. I really enjoyed my lunch. Will come back!

Google
Great first experience. Came in at 11am and the place was empty. Got served immediately by a friendly waiter and the food arrived swiftly. I chose fried chicken Karaage for entrance and a red miso ramen bowl with an extra egg. Food was hot, tasty and plenty. 10/10 would recommend and will return.

Yelp
This review is more so a thank you to Sammy. It was our first day - we crossed the border from Vermont. We decided to come here for a late lunch, early dinner. The ramen was delicious. The ambiance was fantastiic. The service was golden. After we paid the check we walked out to find one of windows on our rental smashed and things in the vehicle were stolen. Not only did Sammy walk out of the restaurant to help us, he called the police for us because we don't speak French. While waiting for the security guard and police to arrive. They allowed us to stay in the restaurant to stay warm. (the thief took our warm jackets that we left in the car) The entire staff kept us informed when the police called the restaurant back. So from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you for being so kind during the worst night.

Yelp
Good food, good service, and OK ambiance. The Miso Ramen was good, however, the noodles were a bit hard to digest. The Pork Gyoza were delicious.

Yelp
So glad to have Toronto's most loved Ramen place make its way to Montreal - and that too, ON THE SOUTH SHORE WOOHOO!! Inside it is cosy and neat, the usual minimalist Japanese interior with a casual laid-back ambiance. The service was great, portions are large and prices are decent. There aren't many choices when it comes to the appetizers, however I was extremely impressed with the fried tofu topped with a spicy chilli paste - super tasty! It is so difficult to find fully vegan/vegetarian options when it comes to Ramen and when you do, they're usually quite bland. This has to be one of the BEST veggie ramen that I have had. I went for the spicy miso which came piping hot, uber rich and full of flavour; every single mouthful was delicious! Can't wait to return, especially on those freezing cold winter nights when your craving something warm and spicy - it's like a warm hug to your belly!

Yelp
Tasty ramen and good portion. Service was on time with online ordering during covid. Soup was served on the side. Tried the spicy shio, miso and dragon fire. Dragon fire was the spiciest and largest portion with lots of chop suey.

Yelp
Situated in the DiX30 on south shore, this little ramen place is decent. Now for starters I've had a lot of ramen in my life; more than I like to admit, although I like to admit I love ramen. They're the best. It's not the best ramen I've had. It's it bad but not best. I had takoyaki for entre. It was delicious, you can judge a good Japanese restaurant by their takoyaki; that's my non scientific take on Japanese restaurants. Anyways onto the main dish. I took their spicy red miso. The noodle were chewy like they suppose to be. The meat was good although it only had 2 thin slices. A lot of bean sprouts which I don't think you're suppose to put that much in ramen. The broth was salty. That's the only bad thing that stood out to me. It was very salty. Overall great ambiance, the waiters are friendly; they explain the different types of soups to you.

Yelp
Absolute number one service, and overwhelming greeting when you walk in the waiter super friendly and very informative I just give him five stars . The food was amazing soups are huge and a lot of Ramen noodles I was very happy with that . It's always very disappointing when you go for a soup and minimal noodles but Ramen Isshin did not disappoint. Sorry I forgot to take pictures lol I was memorized by my soup lol. Over all a must 100% going back again and for Vegan and vegetarian eaters they have amazing options ! Hey got some pictures up this time

Yelp
I am not a big fan of Ramen, never liked it, never enjoy it... Until I came to ISSHIN Dix30. It's so much tastier than others. I had the Black Tan Tan noodle. The broth is super flavourful, the cha siu simply melt in your mouth. I also had the chicken karaage, I think it's by far the best I ever had. It's crispy on the outside and super juicy on the inside. MUST TRY! You must be asking why only two stars if it's so good... Well as you can read from other yelpers, there's a long wait for ramen... The appetizers came, I finished it and still waited for another 20 minutes. Yes it does taste good, but does it worth the wait? You decide. Other Yelpers also mentioned they are pricey and it is do in fact more expensive than other ramen places. Last but not least, their service... Unfortunately, I'm very disappointed. Not sure if they are too busy or they simply just wanted to ignore me... To a point I had walked over to the counter to have them refill my cup of tea and the manager gave me altitude on top of that. So it does taste good, really better than other big chain out there but they got works to do in my opinion.

Yelp
This should be read as a 3.5 stars. I was so thrilled to try it since I had good comments from my Toronto friends about this ramen restaurant! Its probably one of the top ramen in Montreal. However, there is room for improvement. The waiting staffs were nice! We we're greeted as soon as we walked in. What could be improved is the wait time for the food. We we're there around 4pm. It took at least 25 minutes before we get our appetizer (karaage chicken), and another 15 minutes to get our ramen. The karaage chicken not good. The batter was way too thick and dry. It was probably double fried before it got to us. And very salty. Do not recommend. Ramen. The broth was good and thick. They should be a bit less generous on the salt. It's good the first few bites but then it gets way too salty. The ramen noodles were cooked on point! There's only 2 slices of meat per bowl. So for the meat lovers, sorry! I find it a bit overpriced for what we get. However, it did taste good. I probably won't go there often, due to the price and the amount of salt. Just have some water ready after, because you'll be thirsty! The staffs were kind, but the service was slow.

Yelp
Delicious food, good portion sizes for reasonable prices, and friendly service. Definitely would come back if we're in the area again! My boyfriend and I had dinner here around 7:30pm on a Friday, as a stop during our drive from Boston to Ottawa. We had to wait around 15 minutes to be seated and that was probably the peak time for dinner as by the end of our meal there was no longer a line to be seated anymore. The only negative part of our experience was that there were quite a few mishaps among the waiters. During the hour that we were dining, one drink and two dishes were dropped on the ground. The staff was quick to clean up the mess though. To start, we split a chicken kaarage appetizer. It looked like there wasn't much seasoning on it, but it actually tasted extremely juicy and well flavored. The mayonnaise was an excellent addition; I wish we could have gotten more mayonnaise! I got the tsukemen, which is a dish where the broth and noodles are separate and you dip the noodles in the broth. It usually comes with cold noodles but there is an option to have the noodles hot, which I took since it was well below freezing outside. I absolutely loved the broth and the noodles! The broth had a very rich flavor and wasn't overwhelmingly salty like I've found at other restaurants that serve tsukemen. The noodles were thick and had the perfect texture. The dish came with an egg and two pieces of pork, and there were also pieces of juicy, fatty, delicious pork in the broth that I ate at the end. The bowl that the broth comes in retains heat extremely well, so the broth was still nice and steaming even as I dipped my last strand of noodles. My future tsukemen will definitely be compared to this one! My boyfriend got a spicy miso ramen. I had a taste and really liked the flavor. It's not as rich as the tsukemen (which I believe had a tonkotsu base) but I don't think miso meant to have the same bold flavor. Finally, we ended with a mango pudding for dessert. It came with a couple blueberries and a little cream on top. It wasn't overly sweet and definitely had a strong mango flavor. Service was very friendly. The restaurant was very busy but food came out reasonably quickly (we waited around 10 minutes for the appetizer and less than 10 minutes additional for the ramen). Waiters also got back quickly for getting us more water, an additional pair of chopsticks, etc. Notes as an American non-French speaking tourist passing through: The menu is entirely in French but there are plenty of pictures to help you along. All of the staff we talked to could speak English fluently as well so not speaking French was no problem. They take credit card so you don't have to have Canadian currency on you.

Yelp
Just like they make it in Toronto. Even though this is a franchise, they did not compromise on taste! Broth was very tasty and the noodles were chewy and delicious. Service was excellent as well. I guess they underestimated the success of this place because as soon as we were seated at our table, a line was forming up and people kept on coming in. I had the tsukemen and we both shared the fried tofu and the takoyaki appetizers. It was so delicious. Everything somehow made me reminiscent of my travel I'm Japan. Even though our lunch came at a more pricier bill then we're used to, i would definitely come back for more. Best ramen and best service in Brossard!!

Yelp
Pretty good food and great service. The ramen noodles were amazingly chewy and the broths were very flavorful, although it got a bit too salty after a few slurps. The red dragon miso was spicy but wasn't too spicy which was great. For the black sesame tantan, you grind your own black sesame which is pretty fun. We also got the tako wasabi and takoyaki. The wasabi wasn't strong at all so it was a bit disappointing. The takoyaki was pretty good. It was a bit crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Even though it was a saturday, we only waited around 15-20 minutes. Our waiter was very friendly and came to refill our water several times. Since it's located in dix30, there are many parking spaces available outside.

Yelp
Really excited that there's a ramen restaurant in Brossard! I've been here a couple of times and all my experiences have been amazing so far. Service is efficient and even if they are busy, they don't rush you. I've had as kobachi (small dishes that accompany your main meal) such as chicken karaage and the deep fried pork gyoza which both were tasty but nothing special. I've tried many types of ramen but my favourite has to be the tsukemen. I can't not emphasize enough on how delicious it is. I love that the noodles are thicker, that the sides include a whole egg, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, green onions and nori and that the broth is so rich that just by dipping the noodles, you can taste it. It's about $14 but the portion is huge. I've also had the white sesame spicy shio ramen which was good, but I did not like the thin noodles that it came with (I did find out later one that you can ask for thick noodles without an extra charge). The black sesame tan tan noodle is also very unique in taste but good. I also like that you crush your own sesame seeds for these ramen bowls. The spicy red miso is great but has with way too many toppings. It's nice that they offer vegetarian options as well! It's one of the best ramen restaurants in Montreal, but I do find that prices are above average for ramen. The wait time is a little long (a lineup outside and the wait for food as well). Despite those minor issues, Ramen Isshin deserves 4.5 stars and you will definitely see me coming back!

Yelp
As a Torontonian who is frequently in Montreal, I am beyond THRILLED that Isshin has opened a location in Brossard (located just beside the Five Guys)! Keep in mind that I LOOOVE the Toronto location and frequent it often. So this is a DIRECT COMPARISON between locations! As it is a new opening, they don't yet have their liquor license and their service is still fairly... slow. To their credit, on Halloween night, they had 4 visible staff in the dining room: 2 waitresses who were BUSY, a busboy & the host who, during his free time, was helping where he could. There was, predictably, a line, but as this location has more tables than its Toronto counterpart, the lineup still moved fairly quickly. With about 5-6 other couples in front of us, we waited about 25 minutes in line. Then, waited about 10 minutes before anyone even stopped by our table to check in with us. As we were waiting, I noticed the table of 3 beside us (and had been seated long before us) had 2 of their 3 noodles and the 1 girl still waiting. As polite people do, the other 2 were waiting - patiently - for their last order to arrive. I noticed this with another table as well - one persons order had arrived at LEAST 10 minutes before the other order arrived at the table. I worried that our table would arrive out of sync. Sure enough, my boyfriend had to wait until I got my ramen. This (to me) is a big no-no for any restaurant, but especially ramen where the soup should be somewhat hot to enjoy it! We ordered our usual: the chicken karaage, the black sesame tan tan & the tsukemen. The chicken was about the same, and then another 10-minute wait after we were done before our ramen(s) arrived (closer to 20 for mine). At first bite, I bit into a green onion - something I'd specified to the waiter to omit. Upon further inspection, the bowl of noodles seemed to be pre-mixed with them! I did what I could to pick out the bigger pieces before continuing. As I continued to eat, it became clearer to me that the tsukemen wasn't EXACT to the one I often eat in Toronto but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I *think* the broth just isn't as concentrated as it is in Toronto. But it could also be the noodles... I would like to think these are all fixable things as the 2 restaurants should be indistinguishable. That being said, I'll likely return to find out if this experience was just an off night or a constant.

Yelp
Chicken karaage is over cook, ramen was good and tasty, but a little bite salty, they should hire more waiters, because the service is slow.
google avatar

Eric Z.

Yelp
Great food and ambiance overall! I ordered the Red Dragon and it was awesome. Super flavourful and just the right amount of kick. We also got Takoyaki and Tofu, which were all tasty and authentic to my taste. A minor gripe was having to pay $1 for extra seaweed for the tako wasabi. Usually this is free at other ramen restaurants so it felt a little overpriced.
google avatar

E. N.

Yelp
Horrible service- the staff is running around wondering where the dishes belong to. They forget items for your order and can't accommodate you to have your plate to go cuz they don't got the containers- Total disappointment Food is ok- hence the 1 star.

D C.

Yelp
Went there for soft open. It's not bad all things considered. Need some fine tuning for sure. The noodle is a bit overcooked for my liking and the soup is a bit weak in terms of the umami flavour, but not in salt. Salt was a tad over in my opinion. The cha siu was well made and the egg was one of the best egg in a ramen that I've had in ramen in Canada. Cooked well and seasoned properly. The bamboo was overdone a little as well. The chicken karaage was moist and decently made. However, pricing for it was a little high. One additional note. They do not currently have an English menu. Might not be a big deal to some but I prefer having one instead. Overall enjoyable experience and will come back to try other menu items.

Yelp
The food was ok, not extraordinarily good or bad to me. The only downside was that it was too salty. (I chose the 'light' shoyu ramen. Not sure if it means less salt or less fat.) But the staffs were very kind and agile. Liked the service.

Yelp
Ramen Isshin joins the family of Dix 30 restaurants in the hub of the South Shore of Montreal. Who said you need to be downtown when you have spots like this joint to hangout! Neighbours to places like five guys, the restaurant is small but inviting. Japanese inspired dragon in earthly tones deck the walls and symmetrical industry styled lights line the open concept kitchen. The menu is original and authentic-with varying types of ramen with pork based to black sesame based broth. Prices ranging between 14-16$ for a decent sized portion that will get you full. The appetizers were intriguing - I was drawn to raw tako wasabi -4.50$ which is raw octopus lightly bathed in wasabi. Wrap it up on some noori and you have some wonderfully pleasant flavours! Not bad for raw octopus for the first time. This is definitely a upgrade to the styled restaurants in the Dix 30 area, good for some me time or an outing with the family!

Yelp
I found their ramen really plain and even too dry. The price is quite high for the poor quality, I would not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for quality ramen.

Yelp
Best Japanese ramen ever !!! Food super fresh , people are super kind and excellent service !! Go and also great prices !!

Neel L.

Yelp
Ive been waiting to try this place after hearing great reviews and it definitely did not disappoint. I had the shoyu tsukemen (which btw is hard to find in Montreal) and the takoyaki. The ramen is now in my top 5. It was delicious and had just the right amount of saltiness and flavour for dipping noodles in. The hints of seafood and bits of pork in the broth were amazing as well. The noodles were chewy and cooked perfectly. The takoyaki balls were pretty average but good nonetheless! It's a little bit far for Montrealers but I definitely recommend this place 100%.

Yelp
What a great place! The first thing you will notice is the hospitality. From the moment they appoint you to a table, the whole staff salutes you in Japanese and they thank you when you leave. They also bet on the conviviality. If you're alone, they will set you up with another table. Note that you can refuse and wait for a table for your own. I went for dining so I didn't take an appetizer, but a lot of stuff looked delicious. My ramen was amazing! Perfectly spiced, noodles were great, the egg was perfectly cook and the pork was incredible! The only thing I disliked was the bamboo, but that's a personal taste. Ramen Isshin is definitely a must-go in the Quartier 1030.

Yelp
The soup base taste like its made from Asian instant noodle soup packets.

Bill C.

Yelp
This ramen was AMAZING! The noodles were beautifully done and the egg was just so done that it was still melty in the yolk and the soup was delicious! The service was friendly and great. Only a little slip up with French and English . I would recommend the roasted garlic ramen and the cold noodles and hot soup. This place is really great, I really recomend recommend it!!!

Yelp
Went for lunch, had the red dragon soup. It wasnt hot at all, and very bland, and the meat didnt taste fresh. Very disappointed

Yelp
My boyfriend and I went to the restaurant on the Wednesday evening on January 15 2020. We ordered 2 entrees and 2 ramen. We were waiting patiently and excitedly because we heard good reviews from our friends. As the employee came with the food, the employee accidentaly poured ramen on my boyfriend's sweater. Like HOT RAMEN. It could have ended with serious injuries, but luckily he was wearing one extra layer of shirt underneath the sweater. The employee apologized a lot, offering even money for dry cleaning but I was too busy cleaning out the ramen soup off the sweater I didn't focus on what he/she was saying. And I understand, mistakes can happen. The part I am mad and very disappointed is how the manager reacted to this. I don't even know if he was the manager or the owner because he didn't present himself and he didn't even take responsability of what happened in the restaurant. He did not come see us once until the end of our meal to offer a small dessert in return of what happened. Like yeah we will take it if it's the only thing you are offering, but are you inquiring that the shirt and sweater is worth your dessert? This sweater was even a present with memories and now after cleaning we can still see the stain of the ramen soup (we had to wash it several times to clean it decreasing the quality of the sweater). In my honest opinion, the manager should have been able to assist us right away after this incident happened. How do you leave such customer service until the end? What if serious injuries happened? He DIDN'T EVEN ASK IF ANYONE WAS HURT. It even made me think that he would not have acted the same way if we would have been presented as an inspector or food review person. At the end, I still paid full price for the meal. I tipped 15% because of the other waiters being aware of the situation and taking care of us, even the one who accidentally spilled ramen. Aside from this, the food was good. This would have been a 5-star review if such disappointment would not have happened.

Amber C.

Yelp
Walked in with my boyfriend at 5 pm and it was relatively empty so we asked if we could sit at one of the booths. They said since it's close to peak time they would rather save the booths for groups of 3-4 which is totally fine so we sat elsewhere. Then 2 different couples walk in and immediately got seated in the booths... What happened to saving them for groups of 3-4? Then we got our food at 5:51 after the 2 groups that came in AFTER us already got their food. Interesting experience...

Chan J.

Yelp
We go there when we have a craving for ramen but is not my favorite one but since there is not much choice in south shore we can't be picky ;). The fried chicken is good and the quality is always the same. The black sesame ramen broth is good but the ramen taste like commercial instant noodles, missing the texture of elasticity like the authentic ramen place. Otherwise price is fair. And service is fast and customer service is good.
