Three Denver Pop-ups Worth the Trip and Ticket | Eater Denver

"A passion project run by a daytime distiller and an ethical coffee promoter, this nighttime ramen popup appears every few weeks inside unconventional venues. Recent events have been hosted at a tiny East Colfax bistro and a casual South Broadway VFW, where diners paid about $20 for a large bowl (vegetarian or brisket) and even received Bingo cards and a chance at prizes. The operation is intentionally laid-back, the spiced broths—made by former Laws Whiskey and Stranahan’s distiller Jake Norris—have received strong praise, and future menus may include playful mash-ups such as a tacos al pastor–inspired ramen. Updates are posted on Facebook." - Josie Sexton

I still think they should’ve gone with the name Ramen Yakuza, but the udon I ordered was so good! The tofu was perfect, and adding a little chili flakes and oil really made the dish even better. The squid karaage was delicious as well, definitely deep fried to crispiness. Service was good, they constantly refilled our waters. The ambiance was more lowkey, pretty classy for the name of the restaurant.

Google
What a great little place. I tried the takoyaki, pork belly yakitori, and spicy miso ramen with duck. I love that they offer duck as a protein! Everything was delicious. They also have an extensive sake menu; I had the peach sake and it was lovely. Our server was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was nice and chill. I would come here again.

Google
Food was Delicious! The spicy is actually pretty spicy for people who normally eat spicy food so beware. The bowls were big so no one was able to finish their food and had to take togo. Parked down near Incendiary at the parking garage. It was a short walk. Highly recommend trying this place out.

Google
I enjoy this place. It’s good ramen in comparison to others in the city. The location is great, located In downtown Winston. I’ve given a 4 star only because the noodles aren’t that seasoned and not all of the bowls are exceptional. However, my favorite ramen is the black garlic tonkotsu. My second favorite is the curry ramen although I do feel like they put too many noodles in there (both are featured in the photos). I’ve eaten a lot of ramen in my day so they are definitely good enough to give a try and form your own opinions. I just moved from a big city where I had a lot of ramen options. But overall it’s a good place to eat. Their other options are good too. I recommend trying the spring rolls and the curry croquettes (both are featured in the photos also). They have a great playlist going everytime I go there which is alway a plus.

Google
“Tonkotsu? More like Tonka Truck Oil.” Might be one of the worst or even possibly the worst ramen I’ve ever had in my life existence. I don’t know what kind of ramen this was supposed to be, but it definitely wasn’t tonkotsu. The broth tasted like someone boiled socks in salt water and called it umami. Overcooked pork dry enough to file paperwork with. Tonkotsu ramen is supposed to be rich, creamy, and comforting—this was more like a punishment in soup form. If you’re craving real ramen, do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. Grocery ramen has better taste!

Google
Best Ramen in North Carolina, an extremely nice atmosphere. Very clean, great staff, high-quality ingredients, and an amazing bar. I am so pleased to have stumbled onto this place.

Google
i had a wonderful experience and i was glad i went. i love the ambience, the server so friendly and welcoming also they extremely knowledgeable about the menu. i tried Takoyaki and Shrimp Yakitori and that was amazing also the Black Garlic Tonkotsu 10/10, they have a lot option of Sake and at that time i tried Yuki Cantaloupe Sake and it absolutely 10/10. Everything was tasty and flavorful also great sized portions as well. The food was amazing and the service was perfect, definitely will be back to try more items on the menu. if you have the chance, i would definitely recommend eating here.

Yelp
What a great meal! I must warn you the Spicy Tonkotsu Ramen is definitely spicy. Your lips will full mouth will feel the spice. It was delicious though. The chicken and everything in the ramen was flavored perfectly. It was so delicious. My only wish was that the chicken would've been cut or sliced into smaller pieces. As an appetizer we had the curry croquette which was really tasty. It reminded me of a hash brown except it tasted like curry. They give you two and it's perfect to split between two people. The server was great. We drank a lot of water and he was timely providing refills. The restaurant was busy for a Sunday night, but it wasn't overly packed or loud.

Yelp
This place has some very interesting dishes - obviously ramen, also poke bowls, a variety of skewers, bento box, takoyaki, rice bowls, soba, & udon. In my three visits I have tried several skewers - shishito peppers and baby squid (both excellent), a delicious veggie spring roll, Takoyaki (Don Express' is a bit better), the Spicy Shrimp Poke Bowl ( shrimp, rice, edamame, corn, baby Bok Choy, scallions, and nori) - this bowl is awesome (superior to a BYO Shrimp bowl at Poke Star) - and the Pork Chasiu with Onsen egg. The onsen egg is very interesting, very unusual when properly prepared in the traditional manner. The egg is gently poached at a controlled, low temperature producing an egg with a silky, soft, and slightly runny white with a firmer, custard-like yolk. The egg in the dish here was pretty much just a soft boiled egg like most of the area ramen spots serve. The pork was just pork, not Chasiu, so this dish was a bit disappointing.! I have not tried the ramen but will eventually get around to it. There are just so many interesting choices beyond the ramen. This place is a cross between Don Express and Raku Ramen, with a bit of 18 Malaysia thrown in.

Yelp
My vegetarian ramen broth was the best I've ever tasted! Many times with pho or ramen I get a broth I know is derived from meat just because the veggie broth has little flavor. This shocked me! I got the spicy shiro miso with tofu. Absolutely a perfect dish! I also tried the Agedashi tofu appetizer, which was fun and not like anything I've ever had before. The service was impeccable as well. It was a casual spot that still fell special due to the attention of the server and the decor. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Delicious! Today we finally tried Ramen Mafia in WS. The food was so good. We started with an order of Takoyaki and then proceeded to order Ramen. We then ordered a Taro milk tea. The flavors were incredible! I loved everything we ordered and the portions for the ramen were huge. Definitely recommended!
google avatar

Marie O.

Yelp
Enjoyed a steaming bowl of ramen here on a chilly afternoon with a friend. I opted for the shiro miso with chicken, and to my delight, a complimentary spring roll arrived at the table. It was crisp and flavorful, perfectly paired with a chili dipping sauce that had just the right amount of heat without being overly sweet. The ramen itself was beautifully balanced--rich and comforting without being too salty. The half-boiled egg was so delicious that I found myself wishing I had added extra. Next time ! The restaurant opened promptly at 11 AM, but I was initially put off by a strong smell of Fabuloso lingering in the air. It took about 15 minutes for it to dissipate, which was a bit distracting. A slightly lighter touch with the cleaning products would go a long way in enhancing the dining experience.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
A lot of people have hyped this place up. It was alright and I think there are better Asian food establishments in WS. However, they had a wide variety of dishes. We opted for some skewers (pretty pricey for two tiny skewers), and each had a bowl. The portion of the meal itself was huge. I had curry laksa, it was nice and flavorful enough and hit the spot. The waitress was attentive and made sure to attend to us when needed. I did like that you could customize the ramen and the meat , but it felt kinda pricey to do so. There is a gluten free rice noodle option - hooray!
google avatar

Joseph K.

Yelp
I walk past it almost every day so naturally needed to try Ramen Mafia. The dining room and table seating is definitely tight but the bar was long and spacious, I would opt for sitting there in the future. Our waitress was very kind and service all around was quick. Started with the Takoyaki and flavor wise i thought it was delicious, however there was noticeably less octopus inside then most other places i have tried. The bonita flakes on top are always my favorite part. Pork Katsu curry was a stand out for me. The pork cutlet was breaded nicely and fried crispy. The Japanese curry sauce on top had a perfect texture and delicious flavor. I really like the tangy ginger cabbage salad that comes on the side also The spicy shiro miso broth was really good. Could have used a little more noodles but had a nice serving of tofu and bok choy. The soft boiled eggs were a nice touch

Yelp
Seriously so good! Went on a Saturday, not too busy around 3PM. It was quiet and a little dim inside but it added to a cozy and classy vibe. They had fun drink options and some fun takes on food. Not pictured but my fiancé had the curry beef gyuudon udon bowl-SO GOOD definitely get it if you like Japanese curry.

Yelp
Ramen is ramen, right? Well, since my other Ramen experience was incredible, I thought I would give another place a shot. Now I have been there three times. Twice for lunch and once for dinner. Admittedly, it's not as special as the one I reviewed in Chicago but it is still an excellent place for a meal. I have had ramen twice and a rice bowl once. I have also had the egg rolls, tempura shrimp, and a work colleague had the curry potato cakes. All in all, delicious. From ramen, to rice bowls, to bento boxes the menu is extensive enough to make sure that even the most discerning and hard to please person will likely find something good here. Worth a stop if ur in the neighborhood. Oh...and the service is superb and staff is very friendly!
google avatar

Chelsey D.

Yelp
I want to start by saying they are new-which means this restaurant needs grace and time to grow. The food was blah...which seems wild to say about Ramen, right?!? The only flavor from the whole meal came from the Spicy Shiro Miso liquid. The meats were either overcooked or flavorless. This was the first time we ever had a meal where we both wanted more of the eggs than we did the short rib. The picture alone shows the ridiculous nature of their salmon-no need to add to that... Absolutely not a fan at this time, but I am hopeful they will adjust recipes and grow. I will check back if they are around in a year!

Yelp
I wanted to love this place but came out thinking it's ok. High expectations from reviews I'd read i guess. I kept it 4 star because the service was really good and choices on the menu were plentiful that maybe I'll go back and try other things. Nice comfortable and casual environment inside. Table and bar seating . Good busy flow of people in and out. Ramen is definitely a thing right now ! They have a really good wine , beer , sake and cocktail list. Cool inventive Asian inspired cocktails. We tried the Asian pear mojito. Which was good just a tad bit sweet for me. Also had a bottle of Malbec which was reasonably priced at $25 . Good wine ! We started with the pork gyozas . I'd have to say this was probably my favorite thing I ate there. Really tasty and good amount of filling. Perfect little app! They were served hot too. Then we tried the shrimp wonton ramen which honestly was ok. I was expecting more flavor from the broth. The wontons themselves were good but they pretty fall apart in the ramen. I'd try one of the others next time. The ahi tuna poke bowl was good. Lots of tuna. Plenty to share. Fresh edamame, cucumber and roasted corn and lots of rice. Good dish. The teriyaki chicken rice bowl also was chock full of veggies. Bok choy , corn and edamame and the chicken was a little sweet as expected with teriyaki. Little overcooked. Again lots of rice and served with white sauce. The bowls were hearty dishes. We couldn't finish any of it between 3 of us! I'd try this place again but maybe different menu items. Definitely friendly folks and they are trying in a food area that we don't have much of in Winston.

Yelp
I got the spicy ramen with tofu. The bottom is really spicy. The spice is concentrated there so beware!! I was tearing up. It was good though and very comforting. This would be great for a sore throat. Staff was attentive and the food didn't take long. Id like to come back and try the smoked cocktails. This would be nice for a meal with parents or a date.
google avatar

Sam A.

Yelp
I finally got to try this place. The bone broth they use in the Pho dish is unbelievable. Lots of flavor and the noodles here are really good. I upgraded to pork belly and added mushrooms. Had a side of dumplings and they were super good as welll. Service is good here. Lunch cane out quick. Not super busy at lunch and would go here again for sure. May try a poke bowl or bento box next time. They also have orange Fanta. Two thumbs up!!
google avatar

Whitney T.

Yelp
Came here on Valentines day. The place is a cute shop right off in downtown so it can be missed if you are careful. The soba noodles are delicious soft and tender and firm. The ramens are well made and light. The tea is of high quality tea leaves and the cake is soft and moist. The server we had routinely checked in on us and made sure we were taken care of.
google avatar

Ann Marie G.

Yelp
Great place for a quiet dinner! I tried the Chicken Teriyaki Rice Bowl and it was the perfect blend of flavors.
google avatar

Lisa S.

Yelp
After several visits (Ramen Mafia is several blocks from my work so it's dangerously easy to stop in for lunch), I've settled into a favorite that the staff knows is my regular. Black garlic tonkotsu ramen, shrimp tempura on the side, add woodear mushrooms. It's absolutely theraputic.
google avatar

Chelsea R.

Yelp
Made it back to Ramen mafia for the second time and it was so good. The Ramen had so much flavor in the meat was delicious. We got some apps to share and they were all wonderful. The shrimp hibachi bowl was also to die for. I'm already ready to go back.
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
It's hard to say a place is overhyped when it's this dark God, so no matter what you've heard any how Great RM is, I think you'll find that it overperforms expectations. The space is the former Downtown Thai, so it's not that fancy, but the food is worth it. The ramen is fantastic, and the appetizers are more playful than you might expect from many ramen places. Give ramen Mafia a shot!
google avatar

Barrie P.

Yelp
I was excited to have another Japanese street food restaurant in town. They offer some delicious dishes in a modern atmosphere. The servers were nice and I loved the lechee drink the waitress recommended. My husband and I shared the takoyaki, pork belly yakitori, and the wasabi pork shumai. All were delicious but the shumai were a standout. They were juicy and had a little kick from the wasabi. I ordered the black garlic ramen with shrimp tempura. The broth was rich and garlicky. I loved the crispy shrimp. We will definitely be back to try more of their awsome food.
google avatar

Dhruv S.

Yelp
I got the creamy vegan noodles here, it was pretty good considering it's hard to make a vegan broth! I had to add soy sauce and sriracha to bring out a little bit of a kick. The star of the show was the tofu! The tofu was thinly sliced and beautifully seasoned, and the spring rolls were very crispy and savoury! I got it to go and it was still very very good! Takeout service was very quick and the staff over the phone was also very helpful.
google avatar

Helen C.

Yelp
We stopped by Friday night around 7p without a reservation, there was a line waiting, but it didn't take too long to sit most of the people in the line. Waitress and host were nice. We ordered potato croquette, Japanese curry gyudon udon and black garlic tonkotsu ramen. We enjoyed them. It is a place good for quick sit down bite or good conversation over beer/drink and yakitori. We tried the Hokkaido cheesecake and special ube cheesecake. Hokkaido cheesecake is make or break for people that are not used to steam cake (more of East Asian on the go snack). Ube cheesecake would work for most and I recommend it to try when it lasts.
google avatar

Max B.

Yelp
Arrived not long before closing. G. waited on us and was terrific. Had a couple of martinis and a beef ramen with duck meat. The duck meat was fantastic. Crisp skin and delicious meat. I don't have a lot of experience with ramen, but this was easily the best that I've had. Highly recommend.
google avatar

QuyDao T.

Yelp
I'd been wanting to try this place since it opened. It was worth the wait because the Ramen did not disappoint! The broth was very tasty-I got the Black Garlic Tonkotsu Ramen with chicken. My friend got the Tonkotsu Ramen with short ribs. Both of us enjoyed our bowls and slurped our hearts out! We ordered the Curry Croquette and Pork Gyozas as appetizers and they both were delicious! Our waitress recommended those to us. She was very friendly and attentive to our needs. The place looked very modern, clean, and inviting. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience and look forward to coming back for more Ramen as the weather gets colder.
google avatar

Sarah K.

Yelp
Had some great black garlic tonkatsu ramen! I got it with the pork belly and it was phenomenal. The portion was huge and I was able to enjoy it for another meal later! Our waitress was so sweet and attentive. I wish this place was in Greensboro, so I could go more often!
google avatar

Yajaira J.

Yelp
I was craving Ramen and found this place. The service was good the staff was friendly. The ramen was not bad but it I just did not enjoy it and disliked that they charged for some add ons that are usually included in Ramen in other places. The Ramen broth also had a fishy smell although I ordered the chicken Ramen. Not terrible but it just wasn't as good as I've had before
google avatar

Sharon R.

Yelp
We made a reservation for Saturday night at 7pm for a table of 10 and they were able to accomodate us & had the table ready early which was great. The Gyoza Pork appetizer was perfectly seasoned and crispy (4 in the helping). I ordered the Black Garlic Tonkotsu (chicken and pork bone broth) and it was very rich and delicious. I tried my husband's Tonkotsu (pork bone broth) and liked it as well but I liked mine better.
google avatar

Juliana J.

Yelp
had really good vegan udon here, good service and it was quick. on the menu it listed coke products but in reality they only had pepsi products. so they could update the menus for sure just for accuracy! but otherwise great experience.

Allie D.

Yelp
Had dinner here with my husband and son last night while visiting WS. The food was delicious and the staff couldn't have been kinder or more attentive. Really enjoyed our meal!
google avatar

Fabiola D.

Yelp
Today was their first day opened; it's their soft opening. And it was busy, packed...some has to wait for their table. They locate in the heart of downtown Winston Salem. They have selections from rice bowl, ramen, yakitori and a lot of appetizer to choose... Ambiance is very nice...and I'll definitely return for more You need to give a try....
google avatar

Deedrah B.

Yelp
Ramen mafia gets a meh out of five stars. The broth was really great, but the prices on the menu are incorrect kind of like at that café in West End and the noodles were a little tough. They also are not 100% clear and accommodating to the vegetarian.
google avatar

Melissa L.

Yelp
I got takeout on a weeknight. Spring rolls, black garlic tonkotsu and the purple ube cheesecake. I have to say I was a bit disappointed in the tonkotsu; the pork belly add on portion was minimal and I also added bok choy which they forgot. I did get charged for it. I think the best part was the cheesecake, even though I found it pricey for the size.
google avatar

Cody W.

Yelp
First time here and I really enjoyed it. The staff were incredibly helpful and were absolutely on top of it when it came to refilling drinks. I was super grateful because i got the Spicy Shiro Miso Ramen and it was definitely spicy but in the good way. Not so spicy that you cant keep eating but spicy enough to feel it in your face. I got the chicken which had a good portion of chicken. The eggs were done perfectly and you will definitely leave feeling satisfied if all you get is the Ramen. I also got the Takoyaki as an appetizer and it was delicious. If you are a texture person who might like the squid being soft and not very firm then you might not like it. However the breading around it helps out a lot. I will definitely be going back and I'm looking forward to trying the black garlic with pork belly next time.
google avatar

Libby W.

Yelp
When you walk into the restaurant, you notice how inviting and relaxing the atmosphere is. Our server was accommodating in answering our questions about the menu since it was our first visit. Started with the seaweed salad and edamame. We each had the black garlic tonkotsu with chicken and pork and beer and saki. Highly recommended this new restaurant
google avatar

Yelp
We tried Ramen Mafia the day after it opened and honestly I want to only give 3 stars but I am adding the fourth as they have just opened and are likely still getting it all together. We do intend to go back and try it again in about a month. So hopefully it will be a true 4-5 star experience. The restaurant itself is nice and cozy they have a good amount of seating we did not have to wait and did not have a reservation. Our server come over with water after we were seated and informed us of all the items that they did not have (any of the udon, several appetizers, and maybe one dessert) This was all fine as we were just there to try the ramen. Also having worked in restaurants most of my life this can be typical when just opening so I give a lot of grace here. I really liked that they Ramen had a bunch of protein choices and your cost is based on the protein. They also have separate lunch/dinner pricing which is nice I ordered the black garlic tonkotsu ramen and my husband had the regular tonkotsu, we both got chicken. I usually get the spicy ramen at places but our server said if I wanted to try something different she could bring hot sauce. The ramen itself was a good portion but the menu online said it had bamboo shoots etc and it didn't the in restaurant menu also stated things that were not apparent so maybe they mean in the broth flavor? The egg was delicious but very over cooked for what we are used to getting in ramen. And my husband who usually feels things are too salty said his needed salt or flavor as far as the broth and I agreed. The hot sauce is a powder and that added the much needed missing flavor and kick but if you aren't into spice that won't work for you. Our server never checked on us after we got the food and didn't bring us napkins at all until the end of the meal when she was trying to drop the check and I asked for them. Again they literally just opened and I don't want to under rate them so early on. I intend to go back and try more of the menu as it's all available and give them a better chance. I hope they get into a groove because we are excited to have them here and in time for soup season!!! Good luck Ramen Mafia, see you soon!

Tiffany R.

Yelp
Ramen Mafia is my new favorite ramen spot. Service was friendly, ambiance was a whole vibe, music was soulful, drinks were refreshing and every morsel we ate was delicious.

Hui Z.

Yelp
Food is great. Got Shoyu and Curry Laksa Noodle, both with Chicken, which is very tender and got plenty of them. Both are very flavorful. Portion is decent. Waitresses are attentive. Environment is nice. Can definitely go head to head with Ramen places in larger cities.
google avatar

Katie E.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the staff were so nice!! The kids loved the fried gyoza and we all had ramen.
google avatar

Stephen D.

Yelp
Went to this place about a month after opening. It was crowded so we grabbed some seats at the bar. It appears they are still trying to get everything set up, so they were still a little in disarray behind the counter. The food was OK, and service was decent. They were very busy so there was a wait. May go back later to see if they have hit their groove or is this going to be standard.

Maria ..

Yelp
I visited during their opening weekend, and while the interior looks great, and the staff is super friendly and welcoming, my experience was a bit of a letdown. We started with appetizers--teriyaki chicken skewers and short ribs--which were both delicious. However, when it came time to order our entrées, we were informed that they were out of the tonkotsu, which we had planned on ordering. It was pretty disappointing, and I feel like they should've mentioned this before seating us. Based on our waitress's recommendation, we went with the shiro ramen, soba, and udon. Unfortunately, the shiro miso ramen lacked flavor and seasoning--the broth was very bland. The soba and udon didn't impress either; nothing stood out to make me want to come back. What surprised me most was that they didn't have any hot sauce available, which is unusual for a ramen spot. Overall, while the service was excellent, the meal fell short. I may give them another try in a month or two, hoping they'll be better prepared and stocked by then.
google avatar

Chandary ..

Yelp
So I want to say the milk tea texture is smooth creamy-like and thin. It's not like the typical thick boba but they are really good. It comes in a huge glass so none of us were able to finish it. No point in taking it home though cause the ice will water it down. As for the food...ordered fried oysters and YUCK. But I never had fried oysters before so I think I'll just stick to raw oysters. Maybe it would have been better if the dipping sauce was different. It definitely could use of hot sauce to dip in. The ramen- DELICIOUS! Huge portion. The rice bowl- DELICIOUS! Again huge portion We had to take our food home because we couldn't finish it Now desserts! So I never tried the hakkaido cheesecake before but I've seen it on TikTok and honestly it's just a fluffy cake The mango cheesecake is GOOD if you like mango. I love mango and it also had mango chunks. It taste like the ripe yellow soft mangos. The ube cheesecake which is the purple one was my FAVORITE. Everyone else said they can taste the purple powder after taste but cry me a river, it was delicious

Georgia M.

Yelp
Me and my daughter are both gluten intolerant and we were excited that they had gluten free noodles. But upon asking they told us that NONE of their broths are gluten free? What's the point of having gluten free noodles if there's not one single broth for gluten free people? Would love to eat here if they would provide a gluten free broth.

Yelp
literally the best ramen i have ever had in a while! the spicy ramen is the best!!! must try if you are in winston!

Jeff R.

Yelp
really great appetizers, the service was great. drink were tasty. the ramen is authentic and yummy. would recommend.

Adam S.

Yelp
I want to come back when it's a little more established. It's good, I liked the ramen I had. It's was just very busy and we had to wait a while. But definitely trying again!

Summer M.

Yelp
Incredible food! We had the croquettes, pork shumai and pork skewer. All were perfectly prepared. Black garlic ramen with short rib was so delicious. Service was prompt and attentive. Decor is basic but comfortable. Be sure to visit here as soon as you can. Best ramen in Winston-Salem!

Paula K.

Yelp
Amazing staff. Very clean restaurant. For the price of the meals the amount is an abundance. David & I enjoyed the food & the service. Plenty of choices on the menu as well. Thx.

Paul O.

Yelp
First time here and was not disappointed! Everything was delicious - from our Bento box to our teas to our ube cheesecake dessert. Our server, G, was so.nive and helpful as well. Will definitely be back - next time will try the ramen!

Debra P.

Yelp
Really good ramen (nice to have a ramen restaurant in downtown W-S), generous servings, attentive service. Understated oriental decor. Just opened in early September.
