The Best Ice Cream in Boston | Eater Boston

"Joe Rancatore opened his Belmont shop in 1985, just four years after helping his brother open Toscanini’s. The operation has since grown to three beloved sweet spots around Boston with locations in Lexington and this spot, in Newton. Flavors vary, but bittersweet chocolate and salted caramel are always good choices." - Tanya Edwards

Black raspberry chip and Peanut Butter- great combo for a tasty version of the classic PBJ. Perfect treat for a sunny afternoon.

We had the most memorable and delicious and special celebration of my husband's 93rd birthday at Rancator's today, bringing back wonderful old memories of birthdays past and the heavenly ice cream that went with them. Thank you for never changing, but remaining the joyful and hospitable and delicious home to our hearts that you are!

Google
The ice creams are delicious. However, I learned they use corn syrup instead of sugar into them. Why? I think that with corn syrup, these ice creams become a thing to avoid almost all the time, while with sugar it would be just a very good sweet to enjoy regularly.

Ivy Leichtman

Google
Handmade creative New England ice cream. Very artisanal so it's not cheap but the quality is very high. They even make their own whipped cream. They have the best hot fudge. I could almost just order the hot fudge with the whipped cream to eat. No ice cream needed. The ice cream is top notch though.

We enjoyed our experience of friendly staff, tasty ice cream, and creative flavors. Each scoop is quite big. I easily found parking on Concord Ave west of Leonard St. I have included the current prices.

For some context, I used to work here back in high school and Joe is big on taking care of all his bases when it comes to the store: happy customers, quality ice cream, and happy staff-most of which are high schoolers. The ice cream is made local and delivered everyday to each of the locations. The store has rotating flavors with six ice cream flavors that are in the store year round: 1. Vanilla or Vanilla Bean or French Vanilla, 2. Hydrox (cookies and cream but with hydrox cookies), 3. Milk Chocolate, 4. Bittersweet Chocolate (dark chocolate), 5. Sweet Cream (the base for all the ice cream), and 6. Coffee, and these are all located together near the register. They typically have two frozen yogurt flavors and one to two sorbet flavors. The rest will rotate and they can vary from extremely esoteric flavors like Kulfi (indian frozen dairy dessert) and Tiger's Milk (frosted flake) to coconut or salted caramel. And no, they don't have soft serve here. Came here on a hot summer day and spent $5 on a micro (one large scoop) with Cocoa Joel which is a blend of their Milk and Bittersweet(dark) chocolate ice cream that has chocolate chips and hydrox cookies(Oreo like cookie). I've always been a fan and couldn't be more happy with the quality and the consistency of the ice cream over the years. A little bummed out that the prices have gone up to $5 for one scoop though! The store was recently repainted black and red, and there are all new tables and seats! Come here if you want to try some solid ice cream!

Great tasting ice cream and great service! Great vibes and employee-oriented decorations.

This used to be our favorite ice cream place but then we discovered that most of their flavors are made with Corn Syrup and wouldn't even be sold in Whole Foods. :(

Yelp
I can't believe I've lived nearby for a year and only came to Ranc's for the first time today. They have such interesting, inventive flavors like Bombay--full of pistachios, other nuts, and Indian spices like cardamom--and hot & spicy dulce de leche. They also have shakes (sorry not sorry, I refuse to adopt the Bostonian thing of calling it a "frappe") in multiple sizes, which you actually don't see too commonly in the area. It also smells delicious when you walk in, and there's friendly service, in addition to a variety of sorbets and non-dairy options. I think this will be my new neighborhood ice cream spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious ice cream and great staff that is always friendly. Love the flavors including Kulfi and Bombay

Yelp
I like the density of the ice cream. It tastes like homemade. I like the unique flavors you don't often find elsewhere. I like that I can get a mini cup.

Patti F.

Yelp
Go to Cabots in Newton! It's worth the $$$ and they are generous with their servings. Rancatores is super cheap with their servings and overpriced for their ice-cream. The staff doesn't listen, and they are resting on their laurels for how they used to be in their original location years ago on the Belmont Watertown border of Belmont st.
google avatar

Yelp
I wouldn't have known about this place if it wasn't rival to another ice cream spot and they didn't tell me about it. Customer service is quick here and pleasant. The ice cream is good with tons of variety. There is street parking and a public parking lot in the area.

Yelp
I have such fond memories coming here throughout the years. I was originally introduced to this location a few years ago by the kids I babysat, since they lived in Waltham and the Belmont Center location was closer than the Newtonville one. We kept going back and it was delicious every time! My go to flavor is the hydrox cookies and cream. It won't let you down! The staff is mainly juniors and seniors in high school and they're so nice to guests and are hustling on the job (and supporting eachother on their college adventures which you love to see). There's not many seats inside but that was never a problem for us. Besides, it's nicely located in Belmont Center so you can also walk around a bit, or sit outside if you'd like. :)

Yelp
Ordered the Christmas coal, peppermint stick and ginger snap, coffee, and cookies and cream. It was $18 for two mediums (2 scoops) and one micro (one scoop). We also ordered a pint of mango sorbet that wa s$9. They have yogurt ice cream that was not soft serve. I tried the yogurt chocolate which was very dark for me. The Christmas coal was peppermint ice cream with cookies. The ginger snap as delicious. It actually tasted like cookie butter spread from Trader Joe's in ice cream form. Very buttery and delicious Service and friendly and quick, and lots of street parking (but we went at 9pm on a Thursday, they close at 9:30.) I imagine parking might be tougher during lunch or after dinner

Yelp
Never a bad day for ice cream. A friend and I took a detour from work to check this place out. I got the famous Hydrox which was chocolate with a bunch of goodies in it. Chewy and gooey. Easy to order, large scoops.. still no tasting though. Recommendation for the owner - it is nice to have the checkout at the end, closer to the door. It would be nice convenient to line up towards the end, order and pay closer to the door. Ice cream still 5/5!

Yelp
Just solid ice-cream in a local's favorite venue! This is a bit late of a review since I tried their apple cider donut ice cream in October, but the memory of the flavors and creaminess have stuck!

Yelp
4.5 yummy ice cream. The teens are -- worker bees and are fun. Lots of yang energy. Sometimes they very busy. The varied cream flavors are tasty. $$$ D Patnod, Lic ac Cambridge

Yelp
Thank you Ranc's for supporting the BHS All Night Party. Your ice cream was enjoyed by all and your generosity was greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Yelp
Most delicious, vegan ice cream I've ever eaten! My granddaughter, and I enjoyed our coconut cream in homemade cones. Being vegan, most of the cones are not vegan friendly, but these are made right on the premises, and they are! Keep up the good work we love it.

Steven F.

Yelp
Tried two flavors of frozen yogurt (mocha chip and coffee). Neither had much of a texture or creamy. Having been used to Richardson's yogurt, I was expecting more, but at this place, the yogurt was more like popsicle texture.

Yelp
Great stop! Great service and pretty fair wait times. The food is consistently good and fresh. One of the better ice cream places in the Boston area.
google avatar

Yelp
We've stopped in here a few times for dessert after dining in Belmont center. The folks working behind the counter have always been friendly and helpful. They have a pretty wide selection of ice cream and a small-ish seating area. I really enjoy browsing the community bulletin board they have there to see what is going on in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Ranc's is a few minutes' walk from where I work, and even though it's currently winter, we've visited a few times whenever it's warm enough to feel like spring. My encounters with the employees there have all been great, friendly and generous with letting us sample. One employee went above and beyond in making sure my friend's gluten-free cone wouldn't be cross-contaminated at all! I've had the spicy dulce de leche and the chocolate earl grey flavors here. Both are fairly unique and rich - very enjoyable. The only thing I didn't love was that the ice cream was extremely soft and already had more of a sticky consistency (as opposed to solid) before we even had time to walk out the store. Maybe it was the flavors I had and how they were formulated; they just seemed less solid than most ice creams. Still, they taste amazing, and I've learned to eat them fairly quickly - if you visit, consider getting yours in a cup.

Yelp
For whatever reason, the rancs in Belmont is much better. The staff is very nice, and the ice cream is better.

Yelp
I absolutely adore Rancs. Before I start, note that they have two locations- one in Belmont center and one in Lexington. Both these places are awesome, but I'm going to talk about the Rancs in Belmont because I go to this one the most. Among the many ice cream places in New England, Rancatore's (or Rancs as I refer to it) has a very nice selection of flavors. I am ethnically Indian and I grew up having Kulfi. Rancs makes the Kulfi ice cream, and while it's not the same as the traditional Indian Kulfi, they get their flavors right and it is a good one. I also like some of their hydrox coffee based ice cream offerings and some of the more traditional flavors. I would say however that my favorite offering from Rancs is their ice cream cakes. We got a few end of last year (2019) and earlier this year and they are really good. The staff are pretty friendly and patient as I scroll through their flavors and get samples of every new flavor I see. If you like ice cream and want to try new flavors, definitely try Rancatore's!

Yelp
Not only can you choose the many ice cream flavors but also the cones! Small but cozy eat in area - can street park for 30 min free on Leonard street!

Yelp
Quaint, modern scoop shop that seats 12 and enjoys murder. You say? It killed the last remaining TCBY in a 25 mile radius as of Sunday, October 16th. RIP White Chocolate Mousse with gummy bears. Hard frozen yogurt mingles with none-too-exciting flavors, but don't misinterpret; the product is expertly crafted and reasonably priced. Love the tiny touches - flavors held up by magnetized chrome chip clips for ease of rotation, and small batch beverages chilling in the coolers. Both judges agreed the bittersweet chocolate malt edged out the extra-thick milk chocolate frappe, while the pretzel cone showed promi- Hold the phone. Yes, a pretzel cone. This and other gourmet offerings come from The Cone Guys out of PA, and you better believe I'll be diving headlong in to the salty-sweet combo on my next visit. A visit that'll likely result in a fifth star. Go Belmont!

Yelp
The manager at this location is a real jerk. I watched him belittle a high school kid/customer in front of his family and other customers. The kid appeared to have called ahead about a job. I couldn't believe how rude the manager's reaction was. He asked the CHILD "what's wrong with you?", prompting the mother to respond and defend her child. Needless to say, I will not be returning. This establishment clearly needs new leadership.

Yelp
In what world is it ok to sell BOURBON BUTTER PECAN to someone in recovery, bourbon butter pecan only masked as straight old butter pecan. despite there being any actual bourbon, it's triggering. Such a chemically sensitive place, all worried about peanut allergies. What a bunch of HYPOCRITES! I've contacted Joe and Ella to no avail. Toscanninis is better!
google avatar

Logan D.

Yelp
Pros: -Staff (all juniors/seniors in high school when I stopped by) were very nice and helpful Cons: -Place is small -- Peanut Butter Hydrox (peanut butter cookies and cream) & Milk Chocolate ($5 for a small--2 flavors) The chocolate wasn't very memorable but I did find the PBH tasty and interesting. I would order that again!

Yelp
I really love to assert my New England-ness by eating ice cream in the winter. We were picking something up nearby, and I really wanted ice cream. It's a cute ice cream shop with some seating. There's a good mix of fun and old fashioned flavors, including different cones! I got a dark chocolate, and my husband got a milk chocolate. He liked mine better. I did too. The scoops were huge. I thought the ice cream had a creamy and rich texture. I would definitely come back the next time I am in the area and try the Tiger Milk flavor.

Sam S.

Yelp
The water fountain at rancatores in belmont has the coolest, crispest water that's ever graced my lips. I have been blessed with living near this location and being able to frequently bless my mouth with this water. It is the perfect temperature, cold enough to be crisp but not too cold. The water from the water fountain is the most refreshing thing i've ever drank. 5 stars.
google avatar

Adriana K.

Yelp
Probably this place USED TO BE good but not anymore. Service was extremely rude. Although he let us try some flavors he was obviously not happy to do it. And regarding quality of the ice cream, not good either! Not so many interesting flavors and the base was not so creamy. Toscanini's or Cristina's are way better options not so far. Or Kimball Farms and Richardson if you are willing for a little trip! They all have a much better cream base and so many nice flavors options. Oh, and attendants are always happy to let you try any flavors you want. Last but not least, price here is above average, specially considering the quality.

Yelp
I grew up down the road from Belmont Center, and can remember Bailey's Ice Cream, Baskin Robbins, and TCBY. So I was happy to see another ice cream shop open in the Center. My favorite flavor is Hydrox (aka: Oreo/cookies & cream). It is the best version I have ever eaten. Their coffee flavor is a bit too strong for me, but my mother loves it. I do have one criticism: I am NOT a fan of their flavor selection. Not sure how to type this without offending someone, but basically their flavors are geared toward a certain demographic of which I am not part of. If you are a meat & potatoes eater, who prefers basic or classic ice cream flavors, you may find some of their flavors very strange indeed (isn't cardamom something you cook with?). But I am giving them a 4 star review because the shop is generally always clean, the employees are nice, and the place smells GREAT! I hope to try their frappes someday.
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
Update: My friends happened to have Tiger Milk in their fridge (!!) and I tried it. It was everything I imagined and some more. The flavor is very simple and subtle. I could taste the milk and hints of the sugar from the frosted flakes. It's kinda hard to describe. Give it a try!
google avatar

Yelp
Hmmm ... taking care of a friend's two year old while mommy is at a doctor's appointment. How do I handle the two hours? Sugar the baby up, that is how I handle it and then take her to the park to work it off and then hand her back to mommy. I will admit it - her love was for sale and I wanted it, so ice cream it is. Just got her a basic vanilla, but the cake batter is favorite with my kids. I am a fan of their mint chocolate chip (real mint!) and the coffee. BTW, if you do get the coffee do not get a night, it is so strong it will keep you up most of the night :)
google avatar

Jeff M.

Yelp
Overpriced for ice cream. i guess is because of the area it's in or where they are located but i won't be going back.
google avatar

Arnold H.

Yelp
Decent. Toscaninis and Morano are better. Don't go out of your way to come here but feel free to stop by if you're less than twenty minutes away.
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
I don't have anything negative to say about Rancatore's ice cream. One flavor I'm absolutely obsessed with: bourbon butter pecan. I also rave about Tiger Milk (frosted flakes). I only wish that they always have those flavors. But if not, I go for Hydrox or bittersweet chocolate. I love that they make their own cones, AND in different flavors. I have yet to try their shakes. Probably will sooner or later.
google avatar

Jennifer W.

Yelp
Pros: Extremely friendly customer service. I loved that the samples he was giving us weren't like extremely tiny to the point where I can barely taste what the ice cream even tastes like. Very good ice cream. It is thick, creamy, and flavorful. Cons: Price: I did feel that it was overpriced. A small was $5, so my bf and I decided to just split a pint which is a bit bigger than a large for $7. Either way, I will be back. But for some reason, this place doesn't make want to go back as much as I do when it comes to Cabot's ice cream in Newton.
google avatar

Thomas A.

Yelp
Great service, delicious frozen yogurt choices, great for kids, nice cone selectionthank you!
google avatar

Joanna K.

Yelp
Ranc's it such a fun spot for an ice cream. I recently had the coconut ice cream which had actual coconut flakes in it. What a fun surprise!

Jay J.

Yelp
The ice cream is very good, the selection is good (they also have sorbet and frozen yogurt). The pricing is average for an ice cream shop and per usual, the larger sizes are much more economical. I think they hire local teenagers for their behind-the-counter employees and for some reason all the ice cream places, including Ranc's, seem to have a more cheerful staff than, say, a pizza shop. I'm leaving the same review for their Lexington site. I get the same experience at both places.
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
One of my favorite things about Ranc's is that you can get a small ice cream with two flavors without having some kid smirk at you for being a pain in the neck. And the ice cream is pretty good, too. Two of my favorites are pistacchio (with real nuts and not colored green) and cake batter. I've always found the staff friendly and it has a low-key local feel. My only complaint is that they don't offer Reese's Peanut Butter Cups as a topping and sometimes they run out of waffle cones. It never seems really busy when I've gone in. They could make it a bit more cafe-like as an alternative to Starbucks. I wouldn't really trust an espresso drink since I'd be afraid the beans probably don't rotate that much and I've never heard anyone order a drink.
google avatar

Naomi U.

Yelp
The ice cream, sorbet, and frozen yogurt are all wonderful: even consistency, inventive flavors, and great presentation. The people who work there are friendly and know about the product...they are also thoughtful about the way they serve it to you! As a parallel universe bonus: They also happen to have the only under 25 staff that is 'fully operational' in the greater Boston area. Actually I think they are actually much younger, which makes this closer to a sacred grotto whence miracles recur on a regular basis. The space is exactly what this kind of joint should be...so they get a full 5 star rating. I think it's weird that they have no bathroom, BUT I could not take any stars away since they devised and placed a squeezed-together-legs logo onto the external entryway window with a ~'no bathroom sorry' comment beneath it.... Perhaps there should be no soiling of a sacred space anyhow.
google avatar

Aisha M.

Yelp
Best ice cream I have traveled all around the world and had a lot ice cream but the best cake batter and sweet cream ice cream come from here. I also really enjoy the frappes especially the mango and sweet cream frappe. The service is always friendly as the owner always hires high school kids who are passionate about their job.

Steve B.

Yelp
Nice place, Ice Cream good but the choices are limited more than most places. Kinda cheap with the amount of "hot" budge on a medium sundae. The fudge wasn't hot enough to melt any of the ice cream nor was there enough of it to coat the bottom of the cup. Cream was good, the service was good. For $13.75 for a medium sundae and a medium cup of ice cream you would expect just a little more
google avatar

Vanilla P.

Yelp
Rancatore's is a trip for all five of your senses: Taste: Hard frozen yogurt at only 120 calories per serving. Hearing: Friendly young staff who actually talk with you. Touch: Cool brick wall / Handwritten signs for flavors. Sight: Happy people licking drippy, delicious ice cream. Humor: Bulletin board with smack-talk written all over the ads: "If your a drug user loser, call 781-894-xxxx" or "I like cock". It's precious. I had the Hydrox yogurt, and it was great. The yogurt wasn't nearly as heavy and rich as ice cream, but knowing that it was approximately 2x better for me made me like it even more. Plus, at just over 1.5 miles from my house, I can justify a stroll down the block to grab a cone.
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
I can't think about Rancatore's and not think about High School, and I mean that in a good way. Rancatore's a Belmont institution. I do not believe there is a single person who grew up in Belmont and did not know someone who worked at Rancatore's, if they didn't work their themselves. It's the thing to do after a night time school event. First dress rehearsal for the underclassmen play is over? Let's go to Ranc's. Choral concert's over? Let's hit Ranc's. Bored on a warm summer night? Ranc's. The place feels friendly and fun, and much of that comes from the social atmosphere created by all of the high school patrons. The ice cream is good with decent variety, but I wouldn't be holding your breath for 31 flavors. It's a nice place to kill some time, have a conversation and maybe run into a friendly face. The one major criticism Ranc's recieves is that it's prices are a bit high for the quantity you reciev. Not outragous, but more than some of the local competitors and that is often why some may choose to go elsewhere. On a high schooler's budget, some time that extra dollar really counts. You shouldn't forget where you come from, and Ranc's serves as a nice reminder. Even years after high school, stepping back into Ranc's makes me feel right at home.
google avatar

Kerri O.

Yelp
My sister is visiting from Oakland next month, and she's already talking about going to Rancs. Same folks as Toscanini's. Great frozen stuff, and terrific iced coffee. They need to address the disorganized staffing. This place would be a killer destination for coffee, if they spiffed it up a bit, expanded the coffee selection, and hired some motivated staff. Just saying. Oh, and add some more baked goods. Then you'd cover mornings and evenings. They'd capture a bunch of morning commuters.
google avatar

Ariel E.

Yelp
Ranc's chocolate ice cream can comfort the distressed, alleviate pain, and stand in for several anti-depressants if you have lousy medical insurance. During the summer, I tend to make a weekly pilgrimage: When everyone else goes to church, I'm slurping a Hydrox frappe at Ranc's. Amen.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
My god. Tiger Milk? I would've had no idea what that was unless a friend told me to try it. And MY GOD it is the best thing I've ever tasted. They take milk that was soaked with frosted flakes (you know, the sweetest goodness in the world that you have to glug down after you finish your cereal?) It is heaven in ice cream form. And the hydrox is a oreo combo which is out of this world. Better than ANY oreo ice cream I could dream of. Outstanding. It's good this place isn't closer to me because I would be morbidly obese if it were.
google avatar

Minda H.

Yelp
This is the second negative ice cream review I've written. People are going to think I'm an ice cream Nazi, but really folks, just trying to help you out. I didn't like it. The ice cream is gritty (ice grit rather than ice cream, actually), and my dark chocolate ice cream tasted like a fudgesicle. I understand that there are a lot of folks that grew up buying fudgesicles from the ice cream wagon and so such flavors might be reminiscent of childhood happiness, but I was a StarPop kind of girl, so all I wanted to do with this gritty-fudgesicle-in-a-cup was throw it away. The melted marshmallow topping saved the day, however, because when the friends we were with (who raved and raved about Rancs on the way there) asked how I liked the ice cream, I was at least able to give kudos to the melted marshmallow, making it SEEM like the whole experience was enjoyable. Which it wasn't. To top it all off, the place was crowded, not enough seating either inside or out, and mess (napkins, melted ice grit, straws, etc.) everywhere.
google avatar

Theo K.

Yelp
This place has become my vice. I don't smoke or drink anymore, and I think that this place is going to kill me. At least it will be with a smile! Seriously though, it's one of the best ice cream shops around. And in this area, there are a few to compete with, including Bedford Farms. Toscanini's and even Kimball's in Westford. Ranc's is a perfect blend of flavors, without being overly sweet or overly creamy and heavy. Hands down, they are my favorite. And it doesn't hurt that they are literally down the street from my house.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here a few times during the short time (6 weeks or so) I was in the area. I've tried the Hydrox frozen yogurt, the chocolate mousse frozen yogurt, the coffee frozen yogurt, and the mocha chip (?) frozen yogurt, both alone and in a sundae. Staff is friendly. The store is kind of small, but when we'd go in the evening, there was usually one table open by the time we'd order, and some people would sit outside on benches. Parking at that time of evening was usually fairly easy, within the same block that the store sits on, but I can imagine it would be different during the day.
