New Vacation-Themed Bar R&R Will Open on NW 21st in Portland - Eater Portland

"A new bar with mai tais and tacos will open on NW 21st. R&R, a vacation-themed cocktail lounge and snack spot, will start slinging coconut shrimp and margaritas in September. As Willamette Week first reported, R&R is taking over The Abbey Bar & Bottle Shop, which closed earlier this month; Abbey owner Bristol Kelley walked across the street to Twenty First Ave Kitchen & Bar handed over the space to owners Mike Reed and Scott McCulloch. 'We were watching this street grow, and we wanted to play a bigger role,' Reed says. The two took over 21st Avenue Bar and Grill in 2017, but neither of them felt like they could push the space too far into new territory. 'We wanted to be true to the original 21st,' McCulloch says. 'We feel honored to be those stewards, but it’s a little limited. This gave us a fresh opportunity.' Both the drink and food menus at R&R will lean heavily on provisions spotted at vacation destinations and resorts. The kitchen will churn out coconut shrimp, poke, and beachy Baja-style fish tacos with slaw; bartenders will shake and stir mai tais, margaritas, and caipirinhas, with a wide selection of tequila, mezcal, and rum behind the bar. As for the decor, no one should expect tiki bar vibes. 'Twenty First is an extension of our living room. Now, we’re building out our front porch,' he says. For him, that means lots of porch swings within the space, as well as bright colors, tropical touches, and pops of teal and fuchsia. The two are redecorating the space now, hoping to open by September at the latest." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Maybe the best drinks on 21st, which I did not expect from a trendy bar. The Sazerac was perfectly balanced, with the mellowness of the rye and anise flavor of the absinthe perceptible but not cloying. The Trade Winds tasted decadent, with the Falernum beautifully spicy and the strawberry adding a pleasant viscosity. All this and a great, laid-back vibe for just $25 was great value.

Stopped in this bar after having dinner in the area. Such a cute bar with good vibes and a nice ambiance. Service was okay. They bartenders seemed a little standoffish and not as friendly and welcoming as other places. We did not order food but had 2 fish bowl drinks and a margarita. It did not start getting busy until maybe 30 mins after we were there. Small bar with only 1 bathroom. Drinks were just okay. Had high hopes for the green tea fish bowl but it was way too sour/tart. Not sure if I would return.

Mimosas were on point! Fresh and not overly sweet. Elote nachos were amazing too, great size and super cheesy! The interior of this place has a very cute and cool atmosphere and staff is very nice. We are definitely coming back!

Google
R&R Bar was a hidden treasure, my friends and I stopped here passing from one bar to another and were captivated by the glowing light, blaring from their window. We are glad we did because the drinks are delicious and fun, the vibes inside are great, the food is amazing with large portions and the servers are very kind and generous! Their mixed drinks all seem so fun, all unique and each with their own standout taste. They have hot drinks, cold drinks as well as slushies. At the end of the night the server provided us with a free drink that was made and really made our time seem valuable. For $5 the sweet potato fries portions were very large, we shared it with the table and everyone was satisfied. I recommend this place to everyone!

Google
Absolute worst margarita slushie and pina colada slushie I've ever had. It tasted like they didn't even clean the machines. I wouldn't recommend going there for drinks but the food was good.

Google
Best happy hour in Nob Hill. Never a bad experience here; services are great, shrimp tacos are amazing, and a wide selection of booze to choose from. Def will recommend to those looking for a chill spot for food and drinks.

Google
This is a newer spot located out in NW 21st area. The decor is very nice and makes you feel like you are relaxing on a tropical island somewhere. The food menu is limited and could probably add some more items. The Elote nachos were tasty and the spam musubi were ok. The cocktails were tasty and the staff were friendly.

Google
Sweet little tiki bar! Bartender was incredibly nice! I was between getting The Harbor drink or Angostura Colada. He said his favorite was the Colada so that’s what I went with. It was tasty and filling! I had a sip of the Violet Temptress and that one was also amazing.

Yelp
Fresh drinks, tropical ambience, and Jay's treats are so delicious they have even changed some of our dinner plans. Also, sometimes you will be spoiled with a full blown live DJ set. Always clean. Service always with a smile!

Yelp
My favorite tropical tiki bar in Portland! A staple for nights out with friends- favorite cocktails are the Ventiuno margarita and the Mai Tai. They have a DJ most Friday nights who always plays the best music! Just brought in a group of friends for brunch and the breakfast tacos and chilaquiles were fab!

Yelp
16 of us blew in, right after a whirlwind of Timber's fans left. So, our poor server didn't have a second to catch a break. This was last night (April 15th). She was a pro and so accommodating; letting us all have a separate check. I was told the place used to be a German beer bar but now it's more of a tiki bar and the decor is freaking adorable! Who doesn't want some tropical cheer when it's cold and rainy outside?? They have very exotic drinks so I ordered the Habanero Honey Bear. That's made with Lunazul Tequila, lemon juice, habanero honey syrup, & topo chicotequil. I have no idea what that last ingredient is - but the drink is Deeee-lish! The friends I was sitting with all got the Ginger Paloma: Lunazul Blanco, fresh grapefruit juice, ginger syrup, Jarritos grapefruit soda. They said they were very tasty. I'm not a fan of grapefruit so I will just take their word for it. One friend ordered the Elote Dip (corn mixture topped with fresh pico, smoked jalepeno cream sauce, cotija and taijin served with fresh tortilla chips). For only $5, I was really jealous that I had just eaten at another restaurant. Next time I am getting that for sure! This place is a gem and I am so glad our friend (who bailed and didn't even show up) accidentally texted the group about this place, thinking it was the place we were starting at. We wouldn't have known about it had he not made the error. What a lucky co-inky-dink.

Yelp
Great place to gather for Happy Hour and it has a good Happy Hour menu and food was also pretty good too. It's located in a cool area walking distance to many other pubs, bars and restaurants if you plan to do some fun pub crawling which is what we enjoy doing.

Yelp
Tasty drinks! Nice and strong. Well balanced and not too sweet. 5/5 for the venti uno. Tasty tequila in there. Yummy lime flavor. Not sweet or fake tasting. 4/5 for the Mai tai. Didn't taste like the typical Mai tai. Kinda initially reminded me of capri sun. Tastier once you kind of mash the mint into the drink -- but also, this is preference. Strong! The drinks were made with care by the bartender who seems to take pride in his work! Nice, fun ambience with fun music. A happy bar. 4.5, but rounding up to a 5 because of the good service and fun ambience. HH 5-6pm is also a great deal. Outdoor and indoor seating. If you're in the area, worth checking out!

Yelp
Great vibe, attentive and friendly staff, great DJ. Don't sleep on this NW hidden gem

Yelp
R&R is a great place to drop in for drinks. We came around 4:30, in time to catch happy hour, which went until 6. We got the Golden Hour and the Mai Tai. Both were strong and delicious. We also got some coconut shrimp and the spicy tuna poke bowl. The coconut shrimp was less coconut and more panko, but it was pretty good as a snack in a pinch. The poke bowl was alright but pretty fantastic as bar food, if you get what I mean. I'd definitely come back here again - the staff were super nice, the decorations were nice and the drinks were great. I was eying the slushees but just didn't have room! Don't sleep on this place.

Yelp
This has turned into one of my favorite spots in Portland. The drinks are amazing! They have a large menu with plenty of options. I love the frozen rum runner or the classic pina colada. The nachos are honestly the best part. My wife is obsessed, obsessed with nachos. Like go out of our way, they have to be on the menu, she could eat them everyday type of obsessed. And she LOVES these nachos. Said they were the best she's had in Portland. High praise.

Yelp
This place has some interesting bar food and great ambiance. However, our visit was cut short because of bizarre and terrible service. The bartender was weirdly hostile to my friends and I. Ignoring us, refusing to let us keep a tab, and acting aggressively. I haven't been that uncomfortable in a long time. Normally I would shrug it off, people get stressed, but the bar was empty. It was a very odd Saturday night out. I'd like to try this place again, but I was so put off by the whole experience.

Yelp
First ones in for my birthday happy hour. Friendly bartender, delish elote nachos. Had one each of the fish and shrimp tacos. Fish is great; light texture breading. Sauces tasty. 12/10 would eat here again. Could totally sit and drink Mai Tai all night in my younger days. TWO DRINK MINIMUM lol. Oh! And the barkeep made a yummy non-etoh cocktail for my friend. #winnerwinnerfishtacodinner Oh! (pt 2) I was a cheap date! Happy hour prices circa 2010, the last time we were hanging in this neighborhood regularly. Hope it sticks around the next time I make it out.
google avatar

Audrey D.

Yelp
The elotes nachos are the best nachos I've ever had. You know when you order nachos and they seem super great but then you finish eating the top layer and then underneath the bottom layer is bare? NOT THESE NACHOS. Layers and layers of creamy, cheesy goodness. Also, every tiki drink I've ordered has been amazing. The daiquiri and the abandon ship are my faves and they transport me somewhere sunny and sandy.

Yelp
Twice in two weeks. Love the bar, staff, food, drinks, everyday happy hour, indoor decor&skylight, outdoor setup with tabletop fireplace, and everything else!

Kathleen M.

Yelp
Let's just start with saying the ambiance is great. That being said it's hard to think that I will come back when we were charged $47 for their "fishbowl margarita" that was supposed to serve 2-4 people. We are regulars at a restaurant down the street that serves the same sized regular margarita for $22. Nonetheless the service was great and they were open to our constructive feedback regarding their pricing.

Yelp
It's ironic that this place is called R&R, implying rest and relaxation. I think the bartender could definitely use a couple of chill pills. The man made it very evident that a "party" greater than 8 was not ok. We weren't allowed to keep our tabs open or carry a conversation from the bar to the table 2 feet away (NOT standing or blocking the path from entrance to the bathroom) and made sure to make everyone in our party wait to order and would serve multiple people who approached the bar afterwards, first. It's been a while since I've had such blatant, poor service/attitude at a bar. The place wasn't even busy, especially for a Saturday night. Nachos were soggy and meh. The one drink I was able to order wasn't even the right one. Place is cute enough and seating was comfortable. I guess just don't tell 'em that you're part of a group of people that's more than 8.

Yelp
Had an awesome experience here. Sunday happy hours drinks and food were exceptional! Service and atmosphere were both great as well.

Yelp
Adding this spot to one of my favorite bars for drinks. It's a tiki based bar with delicious tasting cocktails that aren't too strong. They also offer happy hour here which makes the cocktails cheap during happy hour. They offer outdoor seating with a table side fire pit. Will be coming back out here again this summer
google avatar

Yelp
I think R&R is doing a fantastic job with keeping all Covid precautions and also letting people have a great time . Their outdoor seating is socially distanced and has individual small heated tables. This was one of the few places ,that we went to post the lockdown and felt quite relaxed because they were doing a great job with social distancing . The vibe is very tropical, tiki bar type and relaxed .The bar itself is pretty small but with outdoor dining a thing these days , it should not be a problem .Not the best place to go to ,in case you are with a big party , but with smaller intimate groups this is definitely the place to try . The drinks are bomb -they are unique , refreshing and have big generous servings of booze which is a stark contrast to other bars on 21st . Their Chicken nachos are also pretty great and are one of those things you look forward to after a drink or two. Service was efficient and the prices are reasonable . Parking can be a pain and you might have to circle the block a couple times or park a little bit further away .

Yelp
Cute spot. Friendly staff. Changed the music when it started to suck. No AC on a very hot day but still enjoyed it.

Haley C.

Yelp
Came here after dinner on our last night in Portland and so glad we did. We came on a Sunday and they had all day happy hour which is always great! Had a couple of venti uno's and they were the best margarita I've ever had. Nick, the bartender, also made us some of his specialty tequilla honey bees and they were amazing. Every drink we tried was so fresh and such a quality drink. The decor was also fun, there was a disco ball, tiki bar vibe with a DJ on Sundays which was a great addition.
google avatar

Jacob M.

Yelp
Very chill spot, popped in for a bite and a drink. Food came quick and the caipirinha was refreshing, as always. Not a huge space, but definitely worth a stop in
google avatar

Yelp
Drinks are well worth the money! One drink and you're already feeling tipsy after the first couple sips! Decor is amazing! Chicken nachos are great! Highly recommend it!!!

Yelp
Friendly bartenders, great drinks, a few simple and tasty choices for food - R and R has it. Great tiki vibe. Yummy coconut prawn tacos. Indoor or outdoor seating. Adult slushies, if you want them.

Stephanie J.

Yelp
The male bartender made a special cocktail for me, it was very good! Not too sweet . He was super friendly and hooked us up with a great breakfast place, thanks! Very friendly atmosphere. I will return with my friends!

Yelp
Wanted to check out this new bar since we were bar hopping on 21st. It's such a cute tropical themed bar. The atmosphere is definitely a 10/10. I ordered the musubi rolls ($8) and a R & R daiquiri ($11). My husband ordered a Mai Tai ($10). The cocktails we ordered were sooo good! Im coming back and trying more of their cocktails. They have a cocktail that's called the Tropical Gypsy that comes in a huge bowl and it's made for 2-4 people to share. I watched them make it and it looked so good! My musubi rolls unfortunately weren't that great and the rice was hard. Not worth the price in my opinion. The staff working were all so nice!! The parking situation on 21st gets really busy especially on a weekend night. We had to find street parking which ended up being pretty far away and had to walk over to 21st. It's easier to just catch a Lyft there. It's a smaller bar. Not good for big groups of people. But I definitely recommend coming here to try one of their cocktails. Will not disappoint.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
The Baja fish tacos were delicious! Only this is I wish the tortillas were corn instead of flour. But other than that the fish was not overly fried or oily. The coconut shrimp and sweet potatoes fries as appetizers were absolutely amazing. Big drink selection and the server was attentive and really sweet. The bartender was pretty cute Downside- place closes at 10pm (state mandated this law) so last call is around 9:30pmish. So at 10pm you got to be kicked out. Would recommend this place!

Yelp
Tl;dr: NW's hidden tiki bar gem (without the funky tiki cups) with good music I live about two blocks away from 21st avenue which gives me a lot of access to all of the fun eateries and bars in the area. When I'm walking my dog I try to stroll past the fronts of bars and restaurants to get a good feel of their menus and seasonal specialties-- the pup also likes to stop and stare at herself in the reflection of the glass. I find myself coming back to R&R very often due to the laid back and casual environment, good drinks, and friendly people. The laid back and casual environment could be brought on subconsciously by the titular acronym for rest and recuperation, or by their theme (tropical?) and menu. Aloha/hawaiian shirts are not uncommon attire for the staff and the floral decorations bring vague memories of kitschy Waikiki-themed bars around the world. I usually find a table for myself, girlfriend, and dog around opening hour on Friday for some pau hana (after work) drinks. We are usually welcomed by freshly sanitized gingham tables and [Hawaiian] local music (Kolohe Kai, Rebel Souljahz, The Green, Common Kingz, etc). I believe the music is determend by who is working at the time-- but everytime I pass by it is usually local music or some kind of 90s-00s throwback which is also my kind of scene. We usually start off with a coctail-- usually a mai tai. By the time the drinks come we are ready to order some shareable foods (pupus, in Hawaii) like nachos or cream cheese crab rangoons (not on the menu for their limited menu currently). Everything comes out hot and timely. It's bar food, but very tasty. Second round of drinks depends on the mood but you cannot go wrong with their menu. Everything is good!

Yelp
This is a fairly new place off NW 21st. The place brings out more of relaxing and vacation vibe to me. It albertville made me feel like I'm on vacation in a tropical area. We tried the Rambling Fever (rum based drink) and the Cubano Mule (rum based). Both drinks were decent and well prepared. The food menu was pretty simple with small plates that are decided for snacking and sharing. We tried the spam musubi rolls. It was pretty much a spam musubi cut up into smaller pieces, nothing spectacular. The elote nachos were a slightly better order. It came with their housemade chips and was a pile high. The smoked jalapeno sauce gave it some extra flavor. Overall, the server was very friendly and made sure we were taken care of. I think I'll come back sometime in the future and give them another shot.
google avatar

Gabi K.

Yelp
Overall: Super fun vibe and amazing drinks! Atmosphere: This is definitely a place to visit to check out the cool vibes. It's a Cuban tropical vibe so there are fun lights and decorations throughout. It's a small place which makes it that much more cozy. They did a great job overall decorating. Food/Drinks: I tried the Cubano Mule and it was one of the best ones I've had in a while. Full of flavor and the the ginger in there gave it a great kick! Service: Super friendly waiter and bartender! Checked up on us regularly and made sure we had everything we needed?

Yelp
So we had a group of 6 people and walked in to get a cocktail an hour before closing - the bartender refused to take our group because we didn't have a reservation. The place had 2 people in it, and we assured them we had just stopped in because we had time for one cocktail before we had to head home. The bartender was incredibly rude and said they would not be able to accommodate our 'large' group of six. She said she couldn't provide service to that many people. Whomever owns this place should be furious they passed on $100 in cocktails for no reason. It wasn't close to close and we are all in our 40s so we weren't rowdy or rude. We were just incredulous they refused our business. If the owner sees this check who was working on June 17th and ask them why they decided not to make you money - it was slow and if I owned this place I would have been pretty upset. The place was not busy, but maybe that's why....don't go there.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a interesting bar on a very busy area, came here on a Friday night and all 90's music playing which is kinda cool. Service was ok I would say If I wasn't with someone the new the serve I would rate the service and safe kinda poor and very unfriendly and welcoming. My friend had the coconut drink that was really good but the drinks that I order were very underwhelming at best, and I thought with the style of this place they would have really cool craft cocktails nope but basic cocktails that sound cool

Marcus S.

Yelp
Great place to hang out. Food was decent and the drinks were okay. Cool little place.

Yelp
This place is a tiny paradise!!! The food is amazing!!! The atmosphere makes you feel like you've landed somewhere completely different. It's super relaxed and inviting. Top service too. Shout out to Doug!! Takes the best care of my mother when she's in. You should definitely stop in!!!

Yelp
I visited R&R Bar for the first time this past weekend and really enjoyed this cute spot! It is vacation themed which is genius! We all like a little escape now and then :) The bathroom even has a palm print on the ceiling which makes you really feel like you're on vacation. I ordered a beer and my friend ordered a cocktail. Both of us liked our drinks and the bartenders were very helpful and accommodating. We didn't order any food but the menu looked so fun. If you're barhopping on NW 21st, visit R&R for a little getaway to paradise!
google avatar

Toshiro T.

Yelp
Meh. This "tiki bar" was underwhelming to say the least. The owners were either in a rush to get it open or have very poorly taste in furniture and style. Cocktails were very basic and lacking creativity, music was blaring and not very cohesive to the environment in my opinion, and just kind of tacky to be honest. Update the furniture, curate a more modern cocktail menu and maybe play some music that's not from the 80's and something more upbeat and tropical? Just a thought.
google avatar

Mathmatik L.

Yelp
I rarely review on Yelp. This was so bomb I had to. Ordered an Elote and some Jo-Chos (house jojo's made nachos). The Elote was perfect! I've been looking for a good Elote around this area, and FINALLY found it! The Jo-chos were top quality, and they even had the toppings on the side so they could actually travel (unlike all other nachos)! Whoever's in the kitchen REALLY knows what they're doing.
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
Really great food and even better drinks! My friend and I came here about a week or so ago and the service was fantastic, they were very attentive and accommodating to my friend's preferences (like a Virgin drink).
google avatar

Jennie P.

Yelp
The ambiance is super cute with booths and side table seating. Drinks are great and the food looks delicious as well. Will recommend and come back.
google avatar

Constance H.

Yelp
Devine cocktails and the bartenders are simply the best! Plus during COVID-19 some of the best outdoor seating that is dog friendly off NW 21st!

Ethan V.

Yelp
In town visiting Portland and this was far and away my favorite spot. The food was awesome and the drinks were unmatched. The staff made the experience 100x better. Give the elote nachos a try. A mountain of a task but worth every bite. The Agua Rita was a personal favorite but every drink I tried was phenomenal. 100% will come back on my next summer visit to this awesome city and incredible bar.
google avatar

Yelp
What an amazing place! Vibrant atmosphere, delicious food and creative cocktails!! I LOVE Caribbean food, culture and RUM! I lived in the Caribbean for years and this wonderful place brought me back, I can't write enough amazing things to capture my experience here, trust me and go! You will leave energized and satiated. One of my new favorites in Portland!! Yahooo!
google avatar

Yelp
Love the vibe in this new NW gem. Between the tropical drinks, sunset lighting, and incredibly kind and talented staff, there is no question this place will be a destination bar in no time. The food is also delicious and obviously made with care and fresh ingredients. Try the corn nachos, coconut shrimp tacos, and the poke bowl!

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Love this place! The drinks are amazing! The outdoor seating is awesome and great overall vibe.

Yelp
This was a great bar. The drinks were really good and the food was good as well. The decor was interesting and clean. Great place for a evening with friends
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
The drinks were strong , and bartender was super friendly , but it smelled like wet wood or moldy-esk something , I couldn't put my finger on it , but ya it just smelled funky , so killed the vibe
google avatar

Yelp
Okay so it's perfection. Feels like a tiki hideaway Colors of the walls smd sounds of the lounge music pulll you into their world and hold you hostage while you sip the craft yummy mai Tai and eat their unique piled famous nachos. Say no more. Oh and the bartender and server are splendid and gracious as you sit in the cozy booths or belly up to the bar they are happy you are there to visit.

Bell G.

Yelp
Not being a sweets person, I am very hesitant to try anything that sounds like it would be so. I took a chance and ordered the coconut shrimp tacos yesterday. Those tacos could not have the spot any harder if they tried! Most places will not give you an adequate portion size for what you pay. I did not have that problem here. Feeling brave I opted for one of the 32oz mason jar drinks. The staff is happy to let you try samples before purchasing. I ended up getting the Slush de Jour. It was perfect for a sunny day and I enjoyed every part of it. There is no place like this in NW Portland. I am happy to have it as part of my community.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
The drinks are delicious and remind me of being on a beach somewhere warm and tropical! I love the fish tacos and the elite nachos!!! They are soooooo good. The bartenders were super knowledgeable and friendly. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Danielle B.

Yelp
I can get pretty critical when it comes to tiki bars simply because I'm Hawaiian , but I have to say, I was surprised! I enjoyed the exterior and interior designs and the ambience was simply amazing! Love the colors and the lighting. My sister and I went in exactly at 4pm for happy hour. It's not a super wide range of options for tapas, but you really can't go wrong with any of the selections offered! The service was great and our waitress stopped by the table a couple times to ensure we were enjoying ourselves. We certainly did! We got a couple drinks - Mai Tai, Daquiris, etc. My sister and I agreed that we enjoyed the Mai Tai... it was flavorful and just strong enough. They even topped it off with Li Hong Mui! Just delicious. As for the food, we decided to order the Spam Musubi and Elote Nachos. I've eaten a lot of Spam Musubi growing up and this one did not fail me. They glazed the spam with honey and serves spicy mayo on the side. Yummy! The Elote Nachos are pure genius. The serving size is perfect and filled my sister and I up. We stayed for 3 hours and really had a blast there. Will be visiting again soon!

Yelp
Fun Caribbean atmosphere. Had a tropical drink, beer, elote nachos and baja fish tacos which were all delicious. Service was great. Will definitely be visiting again.
