40 New Restaurants and Bars That Have Opened in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"LA’s legendary Randy’s Donuts has added a second store in San Diego. Operated by local franchisee Emlio Támez, the shop will stock the brand’s broad array of classic and deluxe doughnut flavors as well as Randy’s Rounds, aka giant doughnut holes, and beverages including boba milk tea, coffee drinks, and milkshakes. The new Chula Vista branch will be unique in that it will also serve desserts made with frozen treats from Sadie’s Handcrafted Mexican Ice Cream, the nearby scoop shop also owned by Támez." - Candice Woo

I ordered off DoorDash for a pick up, when I got there they closed for 10 mins, I had a return that was close by so I went there and came back for my pick up, the woman who I believe is the owner was very sweet, she gave me an extra donut for free for having me wait even though it worked out better for me that she closed for a bit. She still gave me one anyways and the taste was amazing I wish I lived closer to come more often but I definitely recommend this place to people who are near by!

We visited this location on a Thursday evening, and I was very much surprised to see the great variety that was available. They had just about every flavor to choose from, we ordered one of the premium dozen selections. There’s a couple of different types of doughnuts which have different prices depending on the flavor. The taste was really good not dry at all, I would suggest having a good variety as you are gonna want to try all of them. They also have good coffee drinks and such as well as Boba. Previous to this being a Randy’s there was an ice cream place business here. The good news is because it has the same owner they will still sell ice cream here (which the ice cream is delicious) .

Google
Stopped by Randy’s Donuts expecting a solid combo of coffee and donuts. Unfortunately, the coffee was cold and tasted off — more bitter than bold. The donuts looked better than they tasted; kind of bland and not as fresh as I hoped. Not the worst, but definitely not what the hype suggests. Probably wouldn’t go out of my way to stop here again.

Google
Randy's has officially come to chula vista! Their unique donuts are a must try! However there is a wonderful ice cream shop Inside The same place. They have wonderful Mexican flavors like nutella cafe de la olla! . I came for the doughnut but left with the ice cream as well.

Impressed! Went on an early Friday evening around 5:00 PM. No line, great customer service, amazing selection, well stocked counters filled with donuts. There’s nothing worse than going to a donut shop and their stock is low midday- but no need to worry about that here at Randy’s. And the best part? All 10 donuts we chose were fresh! I prefer yeast donuts and they did not disappoint: pillowy, soft, and paired with just the right amount of sweet icing. The maple Long John was just as good as the one in Seattle at Top Pot Doughnuts (iykyk). The Texas donuts are insanely ginormous (the size of a human face) and only $3.95. The jelly filled and old fashioned selections also represented well. All donuts had a reasonable price point. We paid $32 for 10 donuts- that are above average in size. It takes a lot to knock off my socks and well, Randy, you knocked them off. Thank you!

Google
Donuts tasted stale like they were cooked in old grease. The yeast donuts were definitely not light and fluffy. Very disappointing especially for the price of a dozen donuts. We will not return.

Google
Amazing place to grab donuts and ice cream. This place used to be Sadies Ice cream but now it's merged with Randy's Donuts. If you haven't tried the Abuelita chocolate ice cream, it's a must have if you visit. Donuts were delicious and they even had a big donut which is called the Texas Doughnuts.

Kassidy L

Google
Amazing donuts, even better service! We came shortly before close and still many selections to choose from.

Yelp
First time going and was the best experience ever! Amazing environment + excellent customer service. Should've asked the lady who took my order for her name but she was such an angel! Got the big glazed donut and it was soo good! 10/10 I definitely recommend going

Yelp
This location is the best in SD for consistency and quality. Randy's is must when needing donuts for any occasion. Love the gourmet options along with the classics. The cinnamon crumb, blueberry iced cake, and red velvet are always in our order. Staff is super friendly and donuts are always fresh!

Yelp
RANDY'S DONUTS: ICONIC STILL OVERHYPED I purchased a chocolate bar and buttermilk donut. I kind of felt guilty coming right after I left the dentist. What the heck you only live once. Randy's Donuts holds a special place in my childhood memories. Living just a few blocks away, I often wondered if that massive rooftop donut would fall during an earthquake. The nostalgia hit hard when I recently visited--especially seeing the iconic donut model inside the bakery. But honestly, the donuts still don't impress me. Even after all these years, my sweet tooth & Randy's remains the same: Meh. Sure, as a kid, everything sweet seemed amazing--donuts, ice cream, fast food--but with a refined palate now, Randy's just doesn't hit the mark. While millions rave about it, I can't help but think it's more about the bandwagon than the taste. For me, Randy's wouldn't crack my top five donut spots in San Diego. I surely was back to the future, at age 10, looking through the donut showcase thinking to myself which one will my coins afford today? I relived that 2 block stretch on my white steel roller skates even if the donuts don't live up to the legend. HIGHLIGHTS: *Customer service: outstanding and enthusiastic *Prices: fair *Location: kind of surprising: it's like a nook within a nook plaza. It'll be interesting to observe how long this location remains "DoNUT worry, be happy."

Yelp
Captain 619's Review of Randy's Donuts - Chula Vista, California Hark! Gather ye round, fair patrons of the culinary realm, for I pen this ode to the illustrious Randy's Donuts, nestled in the heart of Chula Vista! Upon the morn of yesterday, I embarked upon a quest most delectable, wherein I summoned forth an array of confections worthy of a king's feast: two powdered jelly-filled, a chocolate long john, a glazed marvel, a butter crumb delight, and two chocolate raised treasures. Lo! I must declare, without a shadow of doubt or a hint of jest, that this establishment reigns supreme as the sovereign of all donut shops in the fair land of San Diego! The size and quality of these round delights doth rival even the finest jewels in a monarch's crown. These powdered jelly-filled wonders, akin to the very ambrosia of the gods, burst forth with a sweetness that would make even the most stoic of souls dance with glee. The chocolate long john, a noble creation, draped in rich frosting, didst tempt my senses to abandon all pretense of moderation. And what of the glazed donut? A classic, soft as a lover's whisper, melting upon the tongue like a secret shared under moonlight. The butter crumb, oh sweet temptation! It crumbled with all the grace of a Tragic Hero, leaving me yearning for more, while the chocolate raised donuts danced upon my palate like merry jesters at court, light and airy, yet rich in flavor. But alas, dear friends, it is not merely the size of these round creations that dost impress, but the quality--the freshness that bespeaks a dedication to the craft that would make even the great Bard himself weep with joy. The ambiance of this haven of indulgence is as inviting as a summer's eve, and the staff, a merry band of good folk, greeted me with warmth that could thaw the iciest of hearts. So, I beseech thee, should you find thyself wandering the streets of Chula Vista, do not tarry! Make haste to Randy's Donuts, where your taste buds shall embark upon a journey most splendid. Forsooth, they have set a high bar for all other donut establishments--verily, I shall return to partake in their sugary splendors!

Yelp
Yum delicious donuts! I have been to other locations as well as the first location up in LA. Donuts are always consistent. Today I tried two donuts a churro one and a matcha. This spot is smaller than other locations but has a lot of variety. The matcha one I got was ok it just tasted like a regular frosted donut. Which was kind of disappointing. It was still good but I needed more matcha. The churros one however was so good. I forgot to take a photo of it. It was maple cinnamon glazed with 4 churro bites on top. So good and unique. Service was nice. It is located and connected to the ice cream and taco place next to it. Ambiance is nice there's a small bench but not much to sit at or a table. Seems like it is a to go donut stop.

Yelp
Very limited selection, probably bcuz it was later in the afternoon but many of the menu options were empty. I would definitely try to come in as early as possible bcuz with 5 hours still left before closing, there were very slim pickings. I did appreciate the employee offering an option and letting us know it was a best seller- the Butter Crumb Raised. We're glad we chose this one, it was soft and yummy, thank youuu!

Yelp
Tried it for the first time at their Miramar location and was really good. Their maple bacon is LOADED with bacon so I was very excited to hear that they're opening one in Chula Vista. Tried to be the first ten customers in line for free donuts all year but that didn't work out. Unfortunately, I'm giving two stars for this location because the donuts taste like they've been sitting out for a while and not fresh. I don't think they make the donuts at this location because it's pretty small. Unlike the other location, there is nowhere to sit in here and is definitely a bummer because I had high hopes for this place, but it's actually underwhelming. Between $24 - $45 for a dozen of donuts, I feel bad for people ordering that. To be paying that much for donuts and for them to not be fresh??? No thank you

Yelp
Love love these donuts! The type to taste great even three days later. I love how they add the calories in front of the type of donut. It's such a sweet treat for the whole family! Girl behind the counter was super friendly! Everything displayed perfectly and so many flavors to choose from highly recommended. Check it out

Yelp
I went into Randy's donuts for the 1st time the donuts are very good, they also have ice cream and the Nutella ice cream is one of the best I have ever tasted, but the reason for my 5 stars was staff, we had a lovely young girl take out order she was very kind and attentive to all of our questions, great job at hiring staff I would definitely return.

Yelp
I can't believe I've waited this long to try Randy's donuts. The donut chain has been around for 72 years! The choices are endless. From small, medium to huge-for-no-reason sized donuts. They have something for everyone. My family and I decided to buy our go-to's which includes; apple fritter, chocolate bar with cream filling, minis and a blueberry donut with icing. All of them were absolutely delicious. The portions are so big. We have leftovers for tomorrow! There was only one employee working. He was friendly and on top of his game. Ambiance is very clean and inviting. There is no indoor seating. Just a walk in and order. I'd love to try the donuts fresh! Maybe I'll come by earlier next time.

Yelp
Randy is in the house! In Chula Vista, that is. I stopped in for a couple of my favorites. I picked up to go the cinnamon sugar and the old-fashioned lemon doughnut. Both doughtnuts were good. The cinnamon and sugar were slightly crumbly on the outside packed with flavor, and the inside was nice and soft. The old fashion offered that good lemon flavor that I love so much. Not only did the icing have lemon in it, but the inside of the doughnut, too. I liked it very much. This location is smaller than the other location in San Diego on Murphy Canyon. There's a small amount of seating inside. The service was very friendly.

Yelp
MILITARY DISCOUNT :) I'm a stickler about donut freshness. I love donuts made on the spot so if I ever come here again I will definitely need to come first thing in the morning since they premade their donuts for the day. The coconut donut was a little dry from the coconut topping and the donut being too doughy. My mom got the lemon old fashioned and it wasn't zesty/lemony. She said the only thing lemon about it was the yellow color in the frosting. I will be back to see if this could be an early morning win for me because I was excited for my daughter to try the fruity pebbles donut and I went in specifically for the matcha which were both sold out today.

Tess K.

Yelp
Was expecting so much more. I don't know if my expectations were to high, I'm def a little disappointed. $30 for a dozen basic donuts. This is one of those places that you have to try once but I prob won't be back. 10am on a Sunday and all the had were chocolate everything and a few maple bars. The devils food was the best other than that I'll just stick to Yum Yum or mom and pop shops where donuts are actually baked on site. $30 for a dozen subpar donuts is ridiculous in my opinion. Definitely did not live up to the hype.

Yelp
Fantastic donuts!! Nice little shop by plaza Bonita. The glaze, cronut and chocolate old fashion are absolutely amazing!!!
google avatar

Sharmaine S.

Yelp
Just found out they open here in Chula Vista. Donuts look amazing and aesthetic. Taste is ok and surprisingly not that sweet compared to how it looks which is a plus.

Yelp
Ate lunch nearby and saw this donut shop and had to make a stop to check it out. Little small donut shop with a lot of different donut varieties, from small to large donuts and donut holes! Everything looked so delicious and the shop looked very clean and nice decor. When I was selecting the donuts I wanted, I saw a fruit fly flying around the donuts which was a bit disappointing.. I still order a half a dozen though. Maybe they should have doors / covers on the other side because it is just open. The donuts were good but the churro donut I got, the churro was pretty stale. Every donut was nicely decorated and I would say the donuts are your average donuts. Customer service was great and staff were super friendly.

Yelp
Such a great donut addition to Southbay! Randy's is located where the ice cream spot was (ice cream is still in there by the way). Cute spot!Today was easy, 2 in the afternoon... parking was plentiful and still lots of donuts to pick from! The lady who helped us was so pleasant and quick with helping us! After we got our half dozen ... I asked her what the most popular donut was... she told me it was the butter crumb and I ended up getting two!!! The owner (I believe) was great to talk to as well! Came home with: two strawberry sprinkle donuts, strawberry jam filled, Nutella, apple fritter, glazed and two butter crumbs! Every single one was delicious!!! And you guys... butter crumb is soooooo good! 5 stars all around for Randy's!!!!

Yelp
I've been going to Randy donuts for years in LA. Good donuts. The glazed lacked glazed. Nothing like the original receipt. I had both the old fashioned and original glazed. A little pricey. Our favorites are the Oreo, maple bar and fruity pebbles which are considered premium donuts.
google avatar

Marisol A.

Yelp
Not my first time having Randy's Donuts but it was my first time at this location which is much closer to home and also MUCH BETTER than the location off Aero Drive. IDK why it was better but the maple bacon donut bar I had here was so fluffy, moist, just perfection compared to the one I had at the other location...go figure!! Only downside of this location is the parking...it's very limited, very tight and we drove a few circles before we found a spot. Staffing was efficient, the girl behind the counter was super sweet and there was a guy pushing out coffee like he was being timed lol!
google avatar

Jobeth E.

Yelp
Found this donut shop as I was look for pastries in the South Bay. The donut shop is located in a center with many other small shops and plenty of parking. Was able to get serviced quickly although there was others purchasing doubts as well on a midday run. Order from their speciality variety donuts to try and found them quite delicious. Very flavorful. The shop is small but the menu has options for ice cream sandwiches or iced coffees as well. I would have liked to see a lot more variety in donut styles and flavors but for a small shop, I think they're ok. Would come back and try some of the classics next time. The interior of the shop was very clean and staff were friendly and quick.

Yelp
A new donut shop has opened up in the Chula Vista Bonita neighborhood - Randy's Donuts! What a solid addition for those seeking a fresh donut fix. The shop offers a great variety of donuts, from the classic glazed to more creative options like maple bacon with churros. The donuts themselves boast a good and consistent texture, with a great balance between fluffy and doughy. One unique option I tried was the lemon old fashioned. It had a unique tangy glaze that was a nice departure from the usual classics. Overall, Randy's Donuts is a great new option for donut lovers. The donuts are fresh, the selection is varied, and there are some interesting flavor options to explore. Love that there is a dedicated private parking lot, which had plenty spots 9am on a Sunday

Yelp
It was pretty "Eh" Definitely over priced for some very normal tasting donuts. If you want something special I'd say try another brand.
google avatar

Briana S.

Yelp
Very fast and friendly service doughnuts are fresh and tasty Love the whole set up super cute for pics or videos definitely would come back again Also very clean and tidy .
google avatar

Cezar S.

Yelp
Upon entering, the guy merely glanced at my wife and me without a greeting. Nevertheless, the place was clean and offered a wide variety of choices. My wife purchased six donuts in four different flavors. The quality of the donuts was good, even though the service lacked a welcoming attitude. Additionally, they had varying prices for three different types of donuts. Despite this, I'll definitely return because their products are excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
Small RD location in Bonita. I came in and saw a big sign about their donut ice cream sandwich. This was around 9am. I made the purchase and then was told they did not have the bread for the sandwich. SMH. They open at 6am and they're already out? Or they did not plan for it accordingly and had been out of the bread? I ended up getting a refund and got back in line to purchase another donut. Place just opened with high expectations but it needs to do better.
google avatar

Monica P.

Yelp
Went early morning and loved it! Lots of parking. Tiny shop but has everything you need. The butter crumb donut is a must! They even have fresh ice cream with yummy Mexican flavors. The lime was so darn delicious. Really delicious handmade latte. Great customer service! The donuts are large and so moist. So happy they are close! My kids love the chocolate twist and the blueberry. Fast service! We will be back often! Our new go to donut and Ice cream shop!

Yelp
Went to Randy's in Bonita hoping for the best at 430pm. I know it was a long shot with the selection but I tried anyway. Had Randy's before so I know their donuts are good and I would've ordered what was leftover. Didn't get very far though because no one cared I was even there. I had time to scan what they had left, call my wife and let her know what they had and in that time, NO ONE came out from the back to greet or help me. A group of people come in and were immediately helped while I'm there standing and wondering what the hell?! Like I said, I've had Randy's before. I know they're good but I'm not going back to this location. Get your staff and standards right. I was willing to have whatever was left but I didn't feel it worth buying if no one there knew I was there at all. Never trying again. Service always comes first in my book.

Yelp
Late 1950's early 60's, In L.A. On our way to see a Movie at the Century Drive-In my parents always stopped at Randy,s Donuts. That Gigantic Donut beckoning you to pull and a get your donuts has finally arrived in Chula Vista/Bonita Area. You need to go here if you grew up in L.A. or drove by it or saw its Donut in various movies. It's not the original but it sure brings back memories. And now your children and your children's children can say Hey I've been to Randy's!

Yelp
Ok !! Stop the presses !! Randy's Donuts in Bonita ca. First let me just say that I have been a fan of Randy's for years, ever since I had to drive to Los Angeles by LAX to try them . Ok here is my take !! I'm a purest,I like only glazed donuts but I will eat any type . Sounds confusing it's not ,glazed for comparison and the rest just for eating. Back to Randy's Bonita the place is clean and the service is great .There is no huge Donut on the top of the building but the taste is unmistakable Randy's !! Eat and you will see !!
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Lovely French Donuts ! The service is fast and friendly :) also great location right off the freeway ! Price wise is fair and standard for any San Diego Donut . You are paying for the consistency of this brand !
google avatar

Cesar M.

Yelp
I'm somewhat of a donut connoisseur (270lbs) and I can say these are the best donuts I've had here in San Diego right up there with donut bar. They're doughy and the dough is tremendous as is there glaze. Definitely worth checking out
google avatar

Marichris D.

Yelp
Hard donuts taste like a few days old. Not great especially for the price. I'd rather get yumyum donuts or Krispy Kreme.
google avatar

Shane D.

Yelp
Donuts were great and service was excellent. Had a big order for work and they made the whole thing super easy.
google avatar

Crystal P.

Yelp
Great selection of classic and unique donuts. My kid loved the s'mores donuts and I loved that butter cream raised donuts. Donuts are light and fluffy. Service was excellent and friendly. I can't wait to return again to try the other types of donuts.
google avatar

Daniela J.

Yelp
Came in on a Saturday afternoon and purchased a dozen donuts. A mix of regular and specialty. I enjoyed the toasted coconut and the regular coconut donut. The dough was soft and slightly sweet. I appreciated those the most. I also got the Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the churro donut. I tried the toppings to each of these and they are so stale. The cinnamon squares and the churros on top of both of them tasted like they were sitting out for days. They tasted very old and had a terrible consistency. Quite frankly had to spit them out. For how expensive they are, I don't recommend getting the specialty donuts as the toppings were a massive disappointment.
google avatar

Margie P.

Yelp
So many donuts, all unique like bacon maple bar and coconut. Loved them! They were moist and delicious.

Monique M.

Yelp
Maybe other locations are better but the doughnuts I got were old and stale. I would try another location.
google avatar

Erwin S.

Yelp
Tried Randy's Donuts twice now, and I really enjoy the density and texture of their donuts. Not too light that they fall apart under their own weight, and not too heavy so they feel like a ton of bricks. Sampled some classics like old fashioned, buttermilk and blueberry cake. Also tried the Chocolate Crondy, Red Velvet and S'mores. All were pretty delicious. The Iced vanilla latte wasn't the most flavorful however. Parking can be an issue at times in that lot during peak hours. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Dante R.

Yelp
It's one of the places you have to try ...but donut wise it's OK .....not great but not bad! Very inventive with the donuts, wide range of flavors.
google avatar

Yelp
Randy's donuts being in Chula Vista is truly an answer to my prayers. Since tasting their donuts for the first time well over 15 years ago in La, I was hopeful that we would eventually get one in our area. I've been to the CV location 3 different times in the past week. While this location doesn't turn out fresh hot donuts, 24/7 like the Inglewood location, there was a good selection donuts the times I visited. The inside is small, brand new, and the donuts are in clear displays that makes it easy to pick out donuts. All of their chocolate covered products are absolutely amazing. Something about that chocolate sauce is so tasty. I've recently been introduced to the butter crumb and that is excellent also. I'm going to have to go out of my way to not go into Randy's every week. Again, grateful for this wonderful food addition to our Southbay area.
google avatar

Vern C.

Yelp
They have the years donuts to a line cutter instead of the person who was in line. Just watch the fox5 news video to see who wasn't line, the the channel 8 news video to see the cutter.
google avatar

Jared C.

Yelp
These donuts are my cup of tea, donuts are delicious, thick, and with a soft center. These are definitely some of the best donuts I personally have had within the many places I've been to in the military. I ordered the premium dozen and everything looked and tasted premium. The wife and kids loved each bite and I personally loved the giant donut I received too lol. They called it the "Daddy's Donut." I recommend this place highly to anyone who has a sweet tooth or a donut crave.
google avatar

Ariel K.

Yelp
My favorite thing about Randy's is the ice cream they sell in the back! They have a bunch of unique flavors and I have enjoyed every single one I have tried! If you go to the doughnut shop, the doughnuts are great, but the ice cream is truly worth the trip!
google avatar

Patrick K.

Yelp
Best Donut shop in Chula Vista. I am a Devil Dozen and Downtown Donut bar fan. But for Chula Vista this is the spot. Great variety, I love the classics glazed and buttermilk, old fashion whatever you call it. The have breakfast Sandwiches and the new ice cream and donuts. Location is perfect for work donuts and after Sunday bike ride donuts. I will add pictures later.
google avatar

Katherine M.

Yelp
Donuts were delish! Service was wonderful! Vibes were immaculate The staff members who helped us out were very helpful & had great suggestions (and a great attitude)! Will definitely be coming back to try more of the menu. Highly recommend!!

Kathy T.

Yelp
The cake donuts I tried, were very DRY. Will not be going back there. One donut was the velvet donut and the other was just a plain chocolate covered cake donut. Awful.
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
I was so excited to try Randy's Donuts for the first time. The shop is small. The staff was very friendly. Unfortunately, I had to toss the 3 donuts I purchased. They were not fresh and tasted like day old donuts. They were hard, dense and way too sweet. I do wish the best for this donut shop!

elizabeth m.

Yelp
These doughnuts are horrible, overpriced, overrated!! The staff is super nice but I regret spending my money there. Never again.

Justin T.

Yelp
Went 2 times. First time we went, we thought the donuts were average at best. Gave it a few weeks to give them another shot and the donuts were worse. Would not recommend. Super overpriced.
