Range is tucked away in the middle of Valencia, with a deep and spacious interior. The service was good, as expected, and the server was very knowledgeable about the menu and drinks. My first cocktail was mediocre, so they let me choose another (I didn't ask to have it sent back)! The food was to the point, pure if that makes sense, and I really enjoyed the flavors and combinations the chef put together. Their ingredients were very good, especially the meats like the duck and short ribs.

Range hit all the right notes with me and my crew. From the fancy gin cocktail -- which I couldn't have because it turns me into a raging person -- to the amazing food. I had the roasted chicken which is huge and can be shared. My friend had the salmon which was delicious also. Everything was tasty and full of amazing flavors. I can't say enough about this place. The ambiance is pretty incredible too.

Amazing food and cocktails. A small menu, but for a reason. The dishes they have are exceptional. The salmon was spectacular, the morel mushrooms were unlike anything else I've had before, and the basil was so fresh I would swear the picked it right from the plant before cooking it. The cocktails were well thought out and well crafted. Service was very accommodating and friendly. All around amazing.

Every time I go try a new 'highly rated' restaurant with my boyfriend, we ask ourselves "Was it as good as range?" Usually the answer is no. If anything, maybe a tie. Range is such a good restaurant that even though I have no idea what's on the menu right now (it's seasonal) I will recommend it to anyone. I just trust the chef completely. The front is a bar area, there's some seating in a narrow space across from the kitchen, and then a nice large back dining area. The decor is classy and modern -- not trying too hard at anything. I like to think that's because the food is the main event. The flavors in each dish are impeccably thought-out. The first time we went, we ordered a salad, two main entrees, and a dessert. Usually a salad is a "we should eat vegetables" affair, but not at Range: I took one bite and it was like an explosion of flavor in my mouth. All the dishes are so flavorful that it forces me to appreciate each bite. When food's that good, you don't even feel like you need a lot -- but Range doesn't skimp on portion sizes!

Special night out. They handled a special occasion seamlessly. Range was wonderful, everything was delicious. Service was nice. The restaurant is lovely. COCKTAILS: The Great Pumpkin - 5 stars The Double Date - 4 stars The Smoking Gun - 4 stars There was one more... but it's not online and I can't remember it... red, garnished with a thinly sliced lemon - 5 stars DINNER: Sea Urchin - 5 stars (divine) Roasted Cauliflower and Beet Salad - 5 stars (divine) Oven Roasted Chicken - 4 stars Caramelized Winter Squash - 4 stars DESSERT: Rogue Creamery 'Oregon Blue' cheese plate - 5 stars Butterscotch pudding - 4 stars We had a wonderful experience, we gave the place 5 stars... but I think that our expectations based on Yelp! reviews may have been unfairly high... the food was definitely very good, but not... mind-blowing?

We ate at Range on the recommendation of the Chronicle's best restaurants in San Francisco. The cocktails from the signature cocktail menu were pretty good, and the food was great. However, it was a rare occasion that we went somewhere nice and didn't stay for dessert or coffee because we wanted to get out. The back room was entirely too loud — and not just from accoustics. More than one table was talking extremely loudly and it was an unpleasant dining experience.

Great small place serving California cuisine. Fish dishes are a highlight here with great white fishes and trout. Service staff is very knowledgeable about wine pairings with all food. Cozy quiet place with very good cocktails as well. Fancy but with neighborhood appeal.

Solid Californian fare and ambiance. The food was good but didn't blow me away. We had the quail and albacore tar tar to start. The former was dark and gamey (and tiny), and the latter was fresh almost creamy. The pork shoulder was my favorite entree entree. The most memorable flavor of the meal was probably the nuts (roasted walnuts?) in the peanut butter chocolate dessert. The ambiance is fresh, clean, soft. Love the decor on the outside. Service was great.
