Warm Up With Portland’s Go-To Hot Chocolates - Eater Portland

"This industrial chocolate-coffee tasting room normally serves its drinking chocolate flight-style, but the shop is currently only doing serving hot chocolates and mochas. Still, the chocolate drinks are still exceptional, all made with a special chocolate syrup that’s made in-house using Ranger Chocolate. Cup and Bar also currently has a special vegan white chocolate that’s being used in the candy cane white chocolate mocha. Cup and Bar is open for takeout every day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m." - Seiji Nanbu

Ranger rootbeer S’Mores Kit is absolutely amazing and brilliant and unequivocally delicious! It’s a collaboration with Public Coast Brewing in Cannon Beach (they made the rootbeer for the marshmallows) and it looks to be majority organic high quality ingredients for the chocolate (of course! Ranger is the best!) as well as for the graham crackers and marshmallows. The chocolate squares are perfectly crafted to fit exactly to the dimensions of the graham cracker. Brilliant move! The rootbeer marshmallow is also square, so when you squish it down after roasting it, it also fits beautifully onto the chocolate and graham cracker. I’ve honestly never had such a delicious & thoughtful s’more, and I’m a PNW girl who’s spent plenty of time in front of campfires. I wasn’t initially sure about the rootbeer and chocolate combined, but I’m sold. This should be a dessert served everywhere. The most amazing part is that whereas normally I’d want to scarf down a bunch of normal s’mores…this one had so much flavor and complexity I slowed down and was completely satisfied with one. The kit makes four total; now I have one more set to (reluctantly ;) share with my husband. THANK YOU!! It’s so delightful!!! 🥳🥳🥳

I’m going to be so honest, I ordered their Oregon special hot chocolate, and I didn’t enjoy it at all. Imo, it didn’t taste anything like chocolate. I don’t know if I came in on a bad day, but I really didn’t want to drink anything past a few sips. Maybe they save their higher quality chocolate for the drinking chocolate? I will say though, the marshmallows were divine. They tasted fresh, were toasted, and had that perfect, gooey, melt in your mouth quality.

Google
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Drinking chocolate was hands down my favorite and very affordable. Great artwork on candy bars and mural, a "laptop free" zone to encourage human connection. Get a parking code from baristas to get free parking. I suggest you double check prices before you buy as each bar is a different price and some can be expensive.

Google
Chocolate drinks here are exceptional. Got both the special hot chocolate and mocha. My group tasted some chocolate bars too and really loved the flavors of the maple, milk and Oregon bars. Milk chocolate is not boring!!!! Just know that this place does not have any more breakfast toasts and has limited seating. They do have windiw bar seating and pastries though!

Google
Would absolutely give more stars if I could! The lovely employees explained the menu to us a little bit and we decided on a sipping chocolate and a micro mocha. The employee brought out the most delicious looking assortment along with some Marionberry bonbons for us to try. Everything is DELICIOUS! I highly recommend stopping by if you’re in Portland! (Micro mocha on the left, sipping chocolate assortment in the middle, bonbons on the right)

Google
Cup and Bar has never disappointed, from good service and baristas who care, to even better Coffee and chocolate to have there and take home for a rainy day. Good variety on the menu and everything is well made. Ranger Chocolate 🍫 and Trailhead Coffee ☕️ Roasters really have something good here. The wide open space may seem industrial at first, but is actually quite warm and inviting and you have room to move a bit. With the big door open, a nice day becomes even better as you sit with a cup and enjoy a few moments away from it all.

Google
Coffee shop with PNW vibes. The brick wall with murals, mild music, wild coffee flavors and friendly staff made my experience worthwhile here. Came here with a colleague, they have free WiFi. So it was a great location to do a quick informal work meeting They are known for their chocolates as well. So, be sure to give their samples a try.

Google
Very unique place to get coffee/drinks. We tried the Ranger mocha and drinking chocolate. The Ranger mocha was a very sweet and tasty drink. The drinking chocolate is a very VERY rich chocolate drink. Not my cup of tea, but my partner enjoyed it. The staff was super cool. Enjoyed great conversation with one of the staff members who truly seemed passionate about chocolate. It's definitely worth stopping by if you enjoy chocolate or coffee (or both).

Yelp
Absolutely amazing drinks and service. The cafe is so cute. Definitely will visit again.

Yelp
Great chocolate but skip their bagged Campfire coffee. I bought some to try it's not good. It's a light roast that's almost sour.
google avatar

Tara B.

Yelp
The moment you walk in you smell the chocolate! It's fun to walk into a real chocolate shop and smell the chocolate. I enjoyed the atmosphere and sitting with my micro mocha (8oz mocha) and the smell of coffee and chocolate. I did see drinking chocolates listed in their menu and will have to go back to try those. They have their chocolate bars on sale as well as other chocolate goodies like granola and s'more kits. The girl behind the counter was very friendly and easy to chat with about the chocolates they sell.

Yelp
Walked over from Knot Springs (day spa highly recommended) and this place is super chill. Well built industrial, a small yet good selection of snacks, including granola, chocolate covered ginger, ginger bars, and treats. Check out the s'mores mocha. Also, their chai is nice and spicy.
google avatar

Yelp
So glad I found this place, their chocolate is amazing! Mocha was nicely dark and rich with strong coffee and chocolate flavor. Don't pass up on their pastries either! The campfire biscuit was so buttery, with a great crunch on the outside. The chocolate chip & strawberry scone was also perfect - lots of high quality chocolate scattered throughout, not too sweet and pretty moist for a scone. The place has a warm industrial chic vibe with the open chocolate factory in the back and service / wares in the front, with ample seating and friendly baristas.
google avatar

Kat S.

Yelp
Accidentally found this place while on a search for coffee and WOW! Obviously, it's a place they make chocolate. But also, they make all of their coffee syrups in house. If you're a latte nerd like me you'll know that means the lattes are extra smooth and tasty (that Monin stuff all other places have just doesn't cut it). Then the pastries - we got a savory rosemary cheddar scone and a baked bun with lemon curd. So fresh, unique and amazing. And the service!! A very kind lady working the register and making coffees. Overall an awesome spot you should check out if in the mood for tasty coffee and a fresh pastry.

Yelp
Being new to Portland, Ranger was on my list of places to try since moving to Portland a couple of months ago. My partner and our friends are chocolate fiends too. So off we went. When we arrived, I was one happy foodie. Not only do they do chocolate but also roast coffee. Two of my favorite things. We were greeted by a display of chocolate covered things. At the counter, my wife and I experienced moderate decision paralysis. Everything looked awesome. Here's what we settled on. Drinking chocolate which came with cinnamon short bread and whipped cream. 10/10 Pear Ginger hand pie. 9/10 Marshmallow 8/10 Chocolate square with dried fruit on top. 10/10 The staff were extremely friendly. It looked cool in there, rustic. The only issues was all "high top" seating. That includes all the tables and chairs. So, it was a bit difficult with some of my physical limits, but I managed.

Yelp
Incredibly smooth chocolate! We stopped by to try a couple of bars. The Thai chocolate bar was very good. The rice and coconut milk flavor worked so well together with the chocolate. I also really really enjoyed the classic dark bar. So smooth! Not to mention their packaging is super nice. Love the style. The guy working was very nice and helpful when we were debating which bars to try. It looks like they also had coffee and various other menu items if you wanted to stay and hangout. Cool spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Such a great chocolatier, and the staffs are sooo friendly. I got the Oregon hot chocolate and it really hits the spot. It is incredibly smooth and not too sweet. I'd definitely go again next time I visit Portland
google avatar

Yelp
I loved the whole vibe of this spot! A friend back home recommended I stop here when I was in town so they were the first stop on my coffee shop stops. The cashier was helpful and super friendly. I ordered the fruit granola (OMGGG dried blueberries, cherries, and Marionberries YESSSS) and the Oregon hot chocolate with a shot. It was a great first breakfast here in Portland and I thought the vibe of the shop of part storage, part seating, part chocolate & coffee related gifts was awesome. May have to stop in again and get some treats to take home!
google avatar

Earnie G.

Yelp
Great craft bean-to-bar chocolate maker with a good national reputation. And a well deserved one too. Love the addition of the coffee shop food. Chocolate. Real chocolate. Made right here the right way. Need I say more.
google avatar

Ruchika M.

Yelp
I beseech you, TRY the Thai Chocolate Bar. It is SO GOOD. The fragrance of coconut is delightful with the rich chocolate, and the crisp from the rice is immaculate. I have chocolate every night lol - I always need a different flavor cuz I'm extra like that - BUT THIS ONE, I could have every day! The Port Wine Chocolate and Maple Sugar Chocolate were also super unique and gourmet. I love how dark the chocolate is in the former and appreciate the strong wine essence. The Maple Sugar of the latter comes through powerfully, would liken it to spicy brown sugar vibes. I couldn't help but pick up a Spiced Chocolate Cookie on the way out. The dude up front recommended it to me and it didn't disappoint! It's nice and balanced with the saltiness, and got a little kick from the cardamom and cayenne.
google avatar

Ellie N.

Yelp
A cute coffee/chocolate shop in the city. The latte and scone are good, but nothing outstanding. Stop by and try when you are in the area, but this is not a must stop in Portland.
google avatar

Chul L.

Yelp
Great quality mochas and hot chocolate. Service can be a bit faster, but overall very friendly. It was a bit unexpected as we first thought it was a coffee shop. Great chocolate across the board.
google avatar

Alissa S.

Yelp
The strong smell of chocolate that hits you when you walk in lets you know you're in a place that values quality. My tea was fantastic, so much so that I came back the next day and brought two friends. I also brought chocolate home, and it was high quality, with that perfect snap and gloss. Shout-out to the awesome barista who welcomed everyone with "whatcha need, friend?" and "hey, dawg, what's up?" LOVED that person.
google avatar

Daisy C.

Yelp
I walked by and saw the relaxed atmosphere here, the iced s'mores mocha latte was the perfect balance between dark and sweet. Would recommend to study, or relax here while enjoying one of their beverages or pastries. ( menu has variety of drinks)

Yelp
What a find! Ironically I found out about Ranger Chocolate from a Yelp friend who was visiting from Texas! What? Crazy, I know, especially since I drive past this place most everyday on my way home from the gym. Well, now I know and I'm a fan! This bright, light filled and spacious cafe roasts their own coffee. They offer all the usual suspects and then some when it comes to espresso drinks. I'm always a fan of a little heat - in my coffee, cocktails and dessert - so for my first visit I went for the Tumeric Cortado that derives it's heat from cayenne. And since it was the spiced chocolate cookie that Ruchika M wrote about that caught my attention, I bought two! One to eat there and the other for later. Definitely a good choice. In addition to roasting their own coffee, they make their own chocolate. A fan of dark chocolate, a change from my younger years when only milk chocolate would do, I picked up the Port Wine, Mayan and Mexican dark chocolate bars. Love their simple packaging and interesting flavorings. I've yet to open any of them but I know they will be good based on the small piece of chocolate they served along with my coffee. They also have chai drinks, sweet and savory scones, toast and biscuits. Plus coffee, chocolate bars, biscotti and other packaged goodies to go.
google avatar

Erica M.

Yelp
Updated review: I've been to Ranger now a handful of times. Staff are the friendliest. They remember folks' orders, they're patient, and they make great recommendations. The cast iron biscuits are a true gift to mankind.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Great staff, high quality chocolate and smooth coffee. Love this spot and the atmosphere!
google avatar

Lily R.

Yelp
The mochas here rival my favorites back home and I've been cultivating my coffee intel there for a year. Also sampled the vegan chocolate and wow, a delight. Staff were lovely, too, so definitely worth a stop.
google avatar

Bryan Q.

Yelp
Delicious dining chocolate flight and pastries! Looks like there's a chocolate making class too!
google avatar

Sarah B.

Yelp
Service is top notch! It's nice to have people engage with you when entering an establishment. I frequented this spot over the last few days while I was in town. It's a small, cozy joint! A few places to sit. Tons of chocolate goodies and a selection of other baked treats! I tried a few different lattes. Friend with the rad, bright hair helped cure my hangover with a rosemary cheddar scone and pistachio latte - her recommendation and an A+ one, at that. Will return
google avatar

Ach H.

Yelp
Friendly people. Chocolate is really smooth. The marshmallows are out of this world.
google avatar

Crystal H.

Yelp
I am very surprised how absolutely delicious the salmon salad was. I ordered it on a whim cause I was starving, and I was blown away. For 10.5, it came with quite a bit of salmon. I thought it was going to be a cooked salmon, but it was a tasty sashimi smoked salmon. The vinaigrette was lemon based it tied the whole salad together. The avocado has nice crunchy spices on top. I also ordered their chai. It was pretty good. Very flavorful of the chai spice.

Becca M.

Yelp
My god, the chocolate is amazing! The owner and girl behind the counter were super friendly and gave me a few samples to try. Also, came back another day for the campfire biscuit and jam.
google avatar

Reiko K.

Yelp
Delicious chocolate. We got served tasty samples. Five stars. Highly Recommend. Would love to try their marshmallows and the other chocolate flavors.

Yelp
Coming here was on a whim to find a place that has both matcha latte and got chocolate. This was a place that popped up that was open. After ordering our respective drinks, we realized their menu isn't as extensive as people made it seem. The drinks were a little pricier than I expected, but it wasn't too bad After trying the hot chocolate, I thought it was just okay. The cold night definitely amped the drink up, but honestly, I thought the drink was just okay. Nothing special, nothing to make it stand out above others I've tried. Same with the matcha latte. Considering that people have complimented their food and coffee, I can't knock this place too hard because I haven't tried what their known for. That being said, the things I did try was just... meh.

Warner S.

Yelp
My go-to place for coffee and a treat and in a city like Portland that is the highest compliment I can give for coffee. The service is great and I've always loved the industrial feel whenever I visit.

Yelp
This place is definitely worth the hype! Honestly one of the best avocado toasts I've ever had. I got the Avo toast with Lemon zest. Its one huge slice on ricotta with cream cheese and perfectly ripe avocados. The lemon zest and olive oil was mouth watering. I devoured this toast it was just so good. They have other avo toast options that I can't wait to try and I'll give them a rating as well once I do. ATR: 9.5 out of 10 Synopsis: (+) The lemon zest with the cream cheese and olive oil was amazing. The slice was huge and I was definitely full. (-) only reason it's not 10 out of 10 was the price, $10.50 plus tip is not too bad but definitely leaning on the more expensive side of what I've seen around.
google avatar

Karly K.

Yelp
Must try the fresh Lemon ricotta avocado toast on a nice big slice of sourdough! Yum! I also loved their hot chocolate! It was the best I tried in the city :)
google avatar

Judith T.

Yelp
I purposely go out of my way to come here! This company is unique due to the fact that two companies, Trailhead Coffee Roasters, and Ranger Chocolate Company teamed up to created this coffee shop with a chocolate tasting room. I believe a year ago they did make their sourdough in-house but it since has changed. Regardless, they do make their own housemade nut-based milk, syrups, chai, and pasties though! They literally have the best avocado toast I've ever had. I order their Avocado & Lemon Ricotta Toast. If you're vegan, ask for it vegan-style since it's not vegan by default. It comes with their housemade vegan ricotta. To accompany this scrumptious delicacy, I ordered the Caldera Cortado, a concoction made of caldera spice, espresso, and steamed hemp milk. It even comes with a small piece of artisanal chocolate from Rangers Chocolate Company.

Blake F.

Yelp
Chocolate is so amazing. I keep ordering online for gifts for folks because its so incredible. Staff was incredible and met some management who spent a lot of time with educating me on the sources of the chocolate and allowed me to taste a few. Such a cool education and experience.
google avatar

Ingrid P.

Yelp
Since I was visiting Portland for 48 hours, I was on a mission to stop as much food/coffee into me and Ranger was on the top of my list. Intrigued by the Eater series on Hulu that highlighted them, I stopped by to grab a cup of coffee. They did not disappoint! Out of all the espresso drinks, the mocha is my favorite. The fact that they use high quality chocolate for their mocha drinks really showed through the flavor profile when one drinks their mocha. The only small complaint I have is the sizes of their coffee - I run on caffeine and their medium was 12 fluid oz. I would have loved to get more, but I guess that means I need to come back multiple times! Definitely a must try if you're visiting the Portland area (and grab a couple of their chocolate bars to snack on!)
google avatar

Patricia K.

Yelp
I'm in love. Coffee was amazing. Chocolate was divine. And customer service was so friendly and REAL. I'll be back a lot.
google avatar

Isa B.

Yelp
Had a delicious warm vanilla latte and probably the best biscuit I've ever had! Would recommend. Haven't tried the chocolate yet but definitely plan to took it to go because it was a little too noisy for me to read. Would've loved the vibe for a chat with a friend though!
google avatar

JoAnn L.

Yelp
This place smells absolutely amazing. If you're a chocolate lover you'll love it here. Love that everything is made in house including their pastries. We had the cortado with chocolate which was delicious. And their camping biscuits with jam which was super yummy. The employees were friendly and helpful. We left with a bag full of goodies and happy tummies.
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
Trailhead Coffee Roasters has become my favorite coffee in Portland. They have an edge on all the competition with their dark roast that features notes of campfire marshmallow. So delicious. The interior of this place is cool. Walk your bike through the door, hang it up on the rack, walk to the counter and order a drink, sit down at a table and crank out hours of work. Oh trailhead you are the most underrated coffee in all of Portland.
google avatar

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Cute coffee spot! Very open, industrial space with a handful of small tables (2-seats) and some bar seating next to the window and one of the walls, and some bench seating. There's music playing, but it's not so loud that you can't carry a conversation. I like that there's a private parking lot and there's also a bike rack inside! I ordered the Honey Lavender Latte with almond milk, and it was delicious! Not too sweet and the lavender flavor was very faint. Will need to come back and try their avocado toast!

Destiny P.

Yelp
We just aren't meant to be. No hard feelings, just not my taste. Per my normal life experience of 'looks/sounds' better than I'd hoped for.
google avatar

Nooshi B.

Yelp
Quality coffee shop with lots of tasty treats. Cup and Bar is open and super hip, lots of metal and wood decor throughout. I went with one of their specials; chocolate almond mocha with hemp milk and the avocado lemon ricotta toast. The toast was HUGE, you can definitely share with someone. The mocha was sweet, but not overkill. My boyfriend went with the nitro cold brew and The Sandwich. He loved the cold brew, but felt the sandwich was a little bread heavy. Overall, everything was super tasty and of superb quality.
google avatar

RM F.

Yelp
So good to be back at this place. This is the first place I ever ate at or had coffee at on my very first visit to Portland. It's still just as amazing as the first time. Whenever I'm in town this will always be my go to for a coffee and/or breakfast. Not to mention they have a wide variety of chocolate.

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Buy the coffee, tea and chocolate! Please leave the pastries for me. Thanks. One of my favorite places in town- if you are a tourist and are looking for a recommendation from a local- this is definitely a place to check out and spend some money! Help keep them open! They are putting out a lot of delicious and quality stuff. The honey caramel truffles are amazing! I've tried some really good chocolate (including locally crafted) and these have something special about them! Don't hesitate. If the staff seem distant- don't take it personally- it's probably not you. There's at least a few friendly people who work there and they make up for the blasé attitude of the others! It's a Portland thing! If the product is good and there's not a long wait; who cares! It's not even worth considering in the review. Again- I definitely recommend this business.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
A little piece of chocolate that comes with your latte is a nice extra small touch. For the holidays they offered interesting homemade flavoring such as Apple Brandy and Candy Cane. "The Sandwich" was good and ample portion for the price; spicy avocado was delish. Wish the thick and hearty bread was served warm though. The star of the menu is the Avocado Toast! Much better than the version at Besaw's and definitely the one at Lovejoy Bakers'. Unfortunately, they were out of salted maple syrup both times I visited. Good service, parking is tough.
google avatar

Mariah L.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and incredible pastries! The vegan granola is incredible! The employees were kind and very helpful when ordering!
google avatar

Mari K.

Yelp
Cup & Bar was the perfect way to end my trip to Portland! I braved the scorching heat and sun to walk here from my hotel (what's up with that weird weather at 9:30am, Portland?), and it was so worth it. I would have liked to try everything on the menu, including the chocolate-inspired options, but I settled for the lemon ricotta avocado toast and a seasonal latte - rose and lavender I believe? Everything was incredible. The latte came with a little square of chocolate that was so good, I bought some more as a gift to bring home to friends. The flavors in it were lovely together--herbal, floral, but still deliciously coffee-and-milk. The avocado toast was the best I've had.. amazing. Do yourself a favor and try this. The ambience was also super cool. Tree trunk chairs, interesting crowd, open air. A+
google avatar

Tinna Y.

Yelp
Dirty Charlie is espresso with lots of foam and sprinkles with shaved chocolate. If you not a big fan of espresso (they are not only strong but a bit sour to my taste), you probably want to skip it. Or order it for IG affect, you decide. I am more blown away by how good the avocado toast is! I had avocado Diablo, it's good! I finished my dirty Charlie with chocolate cinnamon bun, so, my coffee doesn't go wasted.
google avatar

Shelley G.

Yelp
Came here for a quick breakfast before my bike tour and I have say, it's a nice place. It's a big area, but they have very little tables that are spaced pretty far apart from each other. As for coffee, my friend got a Dark Chocolate Latte, he said it was good, not strong enough for him though. My other friend and I both ordered a avocado toast (since this place is known for it). It came out to $7 flat, yay for no tax! Presentation wise, it's beautiful, but for taste, it's lacking. My friend and I both thought it could use a fried egg, bacon or something else to go with it. I also suggest you share that toast too. The both of us could only finish half, and wasted our other half. It's really REALLY filling, even though there's no meat on it. PS: They make their own chocolate here! You can see them making it thru the glass window on the side.
google avatar

Kristi P.

Yelp
A spacious cafe that roasts its own coffee and makes chocolate in-house. The Turmeric cortado (4 oz) had a spicy kick with cayenne--good if you don't like your coffee very sweet. The Rose mocha is quite chocolatey with more chocolate flavor than coffee--sweet, but not too sweet. If you order in, you get a piece of chocolate with your drink!
google avatar

Penny N.

Yelp
First of all, the avocado toast that we had was HUGE and bigger than your average avocado toast! The matcha latte was splendid and wasn't overly saturated with sugar like most places, an honest great balance of bitterness and sweetness! Second of all, why 4 stars? Despite the toast looking great, cutting the toast.. took some muscle and force- reading the reviews that others have posted, I'm assuming that I was the only one who had a difficult time trying to cut mine! It got to the point where consistently trying to cut the bread with the knife just ended up with me biting off the bread.. which was.. semi-difficult but better. If I have the chance, would I give this spot another try? Of course, the latte was amazing and knowing this, I can only assume that the rest of their beverages are just as good!
google avatar

Sowmya P.

Yelp
I could just give more than 5 stars if I could! I went in expecting something coffee and chocolatey and what I got blew my mind!! I tasted the affagato with espresso ice cream and the mocha! The affagato was chocolate-coffee heaven, bitter from the espresso with yummy choc bits in the ice cream! Must must try! I also tasted their mocha.. I was told it was made with the Ranger chocolate and it was the perfect amount of sweet for me.. The best mocha I have ever had The place is bright not too crowded to get work done but the biggest letdown is no wifi on weekend which is a big no-go! I am taking a star off for that but if you are just looking for coffee, go-go!!
