"We’ve all been to our fair share of Places With Really Long Menus. They’re spots where the menu is almost the length of a teen lit novel, and they make you want to start taking notes in the margins like it’s a homework assignment. Rangoon is one of these places, but you don’t need to bring a highlighter when you eat here, because pretty much every single one of the more than 100 dishes on the menu is excellent. Rangoon is a casual Burmese restaurant in Chinatown and it’s a great place to sit around one of their long tables with a big group and order entirely too much food. Everything is served family-style, which makes it easy to share a bunch of dishes in a Thanksgiving-esque coordinated plate pass around the table. And while you could have a perfectly good meal here by simply closing your eyes and pointing to a bunch of random dishes on the seemingly endless menu, the thousand layer bread is the one thing above all else that you need to get. photo credit: Kerry McIntyre The first thing you should know about the thousand layer bread is that it’s not, in fact, a thousand layers. So if you’re currently picturing a cake-like structure that stands a couple of feet high with 1,000 paper-thin sheets, you can go ahead and pop that dream bubble now. It’s actually somewhat of a cross between a croissant, roti bread, and the outside of a particularly good grilled cheese sandwich. It’s rip-able, shareable, and comes with your choice of a hearty, soup-like sauce mixed with either curry chicken, vatana bean, or potato for dipping. Any dinner here should start with at least two orders of this, or way more if you’re with a big group. Other than the thousand layer bread, there are a couple other things you should prioritize, like the jungle chicken, which is mixed with bell peppers, mushrooms, snow peas, and onions, and is covered in a coconut green curry sauce. It’s both savory and citrusy, and if you don’t order this, you’re doing yourself (and everyone at your table) a huge disservice. The tea leaf salad is also a must-order and one of the most interesting things you can eat here. It’s a pile of tea leaves and cabbage, mixed with tomatoes, sesame, peanuts, fried onions, and dried shrimp, and it's light and fresh but at the same time super flavorful. Other than these, you can go back to that whole closing-your-eyes-and-pointing technique for the rest of your meal. No matter which plates wind up in front of you here, we can almost guarantee that you’ll leave impressed and very full. And that’s exactly what you want from a place like Rangoon, where you can show up unannounced with a big group, share a bunch of food, and spend less than you do per day on the Amazon Deep Web. Unless, of course, you plan on ordering the entire menu. In which case, please document it to show future generations what a true hero looks like. Food Rundown Thousand Layer Bread Crispy flatbread that tastes like the outside of a grilled cheese and, if you’re not careful, will fill you up before you try anything else. You can get it with either chicken curry, potato, or bean sauce, or topped with beef skewers, and they’re all good choices. Tea Leaf Salad You won’t find this anywhere else in town, and you should definitely order it. It tastes a bit like pesto, if pesto was expanded into salad-form, and we like it very much. Jungle Chicken It looks like your average chicken and vegetable dish, but this might be our main on the whole menu. It’s sweet and citrusy, and we want to bottle the coconut curry sauce it comes in and sell it on the sauce blackmarket that doesn’t exist... yet. Calamari Salad The combination of the hot calamari doused in lime juice over the cold cabbage mix is the kind of thing you come here for. It’s the perfect way to start your meal - after devouring some thousand layer bread, of course. Spicy Eggplant Keep some of your TLB (thousand layer bread) on the table for this almost sauce-like eggplant dish. It’s not super spicy, and it’s best when you eat it like a soft-shell taco with the TLB. Rangoon Crabmeat Dumplings These are filled with crab, cream cheese, and coriander, and then deep fried, which makes them super rich, but worth every bite. Spicy String Beans Super flavorful, shareable, and a little on the spicy side. You don’t need these, but they make a good side for the table. Pork In Mango Pickled Curry This is another dish that’s super unique to Rangoon, and the mango pickled curry sauce is just incredible. If you’ve been here a few times and are looking to branch out from the jungle chicken, get this instead. Northern Burmese Noodles Thick noodles stir fried with shrimp, chicken, scallions, and bean sprouts. It’s definitely on the spicy side, but it’s our favorite noodle dish on the menu." - Sydney McElwee

Google
Consistently high quality food 👌 It's a nice sit-down restaurant near Hawaii Theatre which makes it a great option before or after a show. It's the only place I've had Burmese cuisine so I can't speak to its authenticity, but everything I've ever ordered has been tasty. My favorite are the Rangoon Tea Leaf Salad and the Basil Chicken. Service is excellent. I will definitely return again and again.

Google
Great place with great staff! We came with a big group..they were accommodating with the reservation time change on a Sunday evening. Our server was warm and the bartender made some amazing drinks!! The food was great - the appetizers were the highlight! We ordered all vegetarian and the staff was very accommodating with our request! Definitely worth a visit :)

Google
So incredibly delicious! Got the pineapple curry chicken and mango chicken with Burmese rice and everything was excellent. It’s easily enough food to split one meal between two people. Service was a little slow (they definitely need more servers) but the food more than made up for it! People with food allergies/celiac—this is your place! They easily accommodated my allergies to gluten, dairy, eggs, and peanuts and there was so much to choose from. Sadly, the menu isn’t marked with these allergens, but our server helped pick food that was safe to eat. I’m already counting down the minutes until I can make it back there! This was one of the best meals I had while visiting Hawaii.

Google
Nice decoration and large choice of meals. Wonderful colors in the plates, but tastes are poor, suggesting the food is not as fresh as other options that we tried in the area. Service is nice but trying to push for things that we didn't want and finally didn't like.

Google
The food. If nothing else, go here for the food. And make reservations ! On OpenTable. Get the Rangoon Tea Leaf Salad, because that’s what everyone should get when going here; its combination of flavours and textures was enticing. Savoury, earthy, amazing. Only complaint for me is that it was really oily. The Rahkine Fisherman’s Stew was a heady combination of mussels, squids, tail-on shrimp in a vibrant fish sauce-tomato broth. Definitely delicious, particularly if you fancy oceany flavours. Portion looks smaller in comparison to other dishes here, yet it’s more than filling. We also got the Beef Biryani, which is a huge portion of rice and tender beef under a paratha-like bread lid that’s lifted off before serving. Somehow it took four years to get to this classy Burmese restaurant, and it will be less than four years before going back. Between a bartender, a very adept waitress, and a food runner, they managed to get a three-quarter-full restaurant on a Monday night fed and satisfied, efficiently and politely.

Google
I had an amazing meal at Rangoon Burmese Kitchen! We started with the crispy samosas, which were perfectly golden and came with a delicious dipping sauce. For the main course, we tried the Burmese curry with tofu subbed in, and it was a total hit. The tofu was cooked just right and soaked up all the rich, flavorful curry sauce. The portion sizes were generous, and every bite was packed with authentic Burmese flavors. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, making it a great spot for a relaxed meal. Highly recommend Rangoon Burmese Kitchen for a tasty and satisfying dining experience!

Google
Burmese guy here. This place is so bad that I want to cry. The food: watered down with very little hint of Burmese taste. The laphet salad is missing dry shrimp powder, and they added ingredients that are not Burmese (jalapenos and alfalfa sprouts). The Shan noodle is the worst; it's more of a watery soup rather than the dry noodle dish it's supposed to be. The service: We came in 30 minutes before closing. The waitress was accommodating - so thank you. Other: the water cups they served smelled like dish detergent. Please rinse them before serving your customers.

Google
Very first time trying traditional Burmese cuisine, it's kindaf hard to tell if they're authentic. But some dishes are really good while some are just okay. Particularly the pork belly with green mustard(delicious and highly recommended), the crispy tofu, palatha, fried calamari were not bad!!!! It'd be even better if the cleaness of the dining environment could be improved! Second visit, everything was so salty! To the scary extend.

Yelp
Beautiful place with awesome food and service. Forgot to take a picture of the tea leaf salad before we tore in to it. Also had mango salad, samusa, special noodles, and fish curry.

Gavin J.

Yelp
Happy to come back Food was delicious plentiful and satisfying Great range of traditional Burmese soups, salads, noodles ,rice and more Great chill atmosphere with comfortable seating at tables backed up with some great service Full bar available but no sodas so it's mocktails or water Dessert was listed in the menu but not available

Yelp
Excellent flavors. Earnest service. Vibrant atmosphere. We loved the Rangoon tea leaf salad (the one with the cabbage) and Burmese curry and potatoes with lamb. The basil with beef and garlic noodles with beef had great flavors but the beef was tough and seemed overcooked. That's the main reason for the loss of a star. We went a couple days after Valentine's Day, which clearly cleaned them out. We initially wanted the basil with chicken, garlic noodles with pork, and coconut rice. But we had to pivot because they were out of chicken, pork, and coconut rice. Crazy! But I'm not going to fault them for this and will call to check on ingredient availability next time.

Sheri R.

Yelp
Yummy food in cute ambience. Nicely spiced and flavored food with options to make vegetarian or vegan. Service is good as well. Would and have recommended. Parking may be challenging but there are lots around, may be harder for parking during Hawaii Theatre events.

Ross M.

Yelp
Ordered Basil Chicken and Nan Gyi Thoke (rice noodles w/coconut chicken). Dishes come out "family style" so you can share the food. The basil chicken was very tasty, so much flavor that we ordered a coconut rice. The combination of the coconut rice with the basil chicken was a winner. The rice was on the clumpy/sticky side so as to soak up and hold the flavor - a winning combination! The more I ate of the basil chicken, the flavor became overpowering to the extent that it was salty. Just keep that in mind. The rice noodles with coconut chicken didn't have as strong a flavor but as you continue to eat more of it, the flavor builds and becomes better. As the sauce is on the watery side, it would help to offset the strength of the basil chicken, but the flavors may not necessarily 'match' if you're picky about your food. It's been about an hour since we finished our meal and my wife and I both noticed that our tongues feel like we had too much salt. Should've had something sweet after dinner to help offset the saltiness. The reason for the three star rating is because the noodle dish was lukewarm-warm when it came out - not good quality control. However, the waitress was nice enough to take it back and have a new one made for us. It came out piping hot! We would most definitely order the basil chicken dish and coconut rice again. Maybe two orders of the rice to one order of the basil chicken. The interior is with low, lighting which gives it a casual, relaxed feeling. The seats are all wood and became a bit uncomfortable while sitting for an extended period of time. Casual attire is fine. Since this restaurant is located in downtown Chinatown, parking on the street may be difficult to find, but there are parking lots in the vicinity.

Yelp
We came here for dinner on a Friday night with a group of 6. There was no wait since we arrived early and street parking wasn't hard to find. Service was very slow at first but they let us know they were understaffed. The food was great and we ordered a lot of different dishes to share! The drinks came out really slowly throughout the night. My favorites were the lemongrass prawn, calamari and the pan fried noodles. Everything was a hit and we all left super full! Overall it was a little pricey but it was great to try all the different dishes! Hopefully service gets better but otherwise it's a nice little spot.

Vivian K.

Yelp
Glad to report that food remains consistent after many years. My favorite is still the tea leaf salad and the pumpkin stew. Less stars than prior review mostly due to their service. We were not aware of the automatic tip added on to the bill and it was not itemized. Food came out really fast but drinks took a while. They do serve alcohol and corkage fee is "it depends on the owner". The air circulation is also pretty poor at the restaurant so all of us were sweating on a pretty cool Hawaii winter night.

Trisdon M.

Yelp
This place is absolutely fantastic! From service to atmosphere to amazing food, everything about the experience was top notch! At our server's recommendation we tried the Salt and pepper calamari, Garlic noodle, Brussel sprouts, and Basil eggplant. Everything was seasoned perfectly and had nice deep flavor. The calamari and garlic noodles were my favorite! Still thinking about it now. So glad my close friend encouraged me to join him for dinner here and now I gotta spread the word. Check it out for sure!

Hemang S.

Yelp
Loved eating here before watching a show at the Hawaii Theater nearby. We had the fermented tea salad as well as a few other dishes. I need to come back and try a few more! The crowd got so packed right before the show, so it was fun to people watch as well! We got full off of our meal and were ready to digest and watch the show later that evening. Located deep in the hear of Chinatown area, I will be back!

Rebecca S.

Yelp
Came here with my family and we were impressed. The tea leaf salad is a must, but you really cannot go wrong with anything they offer. Everyone who served us was kind and the ambiance was peaceful. I have never had Burmese food before so this was a pretty cool experience!

Yelp
I took my parents here as mom is looking more for vegetarian options . They have tried Burmese food . I'm glad to say that the Burmese food is almost on par with California. From my parents , they said it adds a freshness to their palette . Food wasn't as greasy . Staff were great and attentive with refilling water . Decor does transport you to South East Asia Located on Nuannu avenue , a primal location for walkability and other businesses . The only critique I have is the tea leaf salad . The lettuce isn't chopped as finely and it requires more tea to my taste. I also did not know there's a Burmese version of biryani . My favorite was the biryani with platha and the crispy and steamy samusa Dishes we had: BURMESE SAMUSA Hand wrapped with potato, onion, mint leat, green pea, spices, garlic chili sauce. SALT & PEPPER CALAMARI Lightly battered and wok tossed with sall, black pepper, onion, jalapeño, bell pepper, coriander. TEA LEAF SALAD Fermented green tea leaf, romaine leniuce, gamic chios, oe peanuts, yellow split pea, green split pea, serne seed, sune seed, tomato, jalapeño, lime. PINEAPPLE CURRY- Chicken Pineapple dice, bell pepper, carrot, onion, garlic, ginger, cilantro, coconut, yellow curry sauce. PUMPKIN VEGETABLE STEW Local mixed vegetable, pumpkin puree sauce, diced kabocha, spices. BIRYANI- Vegetables Basmati rice, spices, light butter, raisins, tomato, mint, fried onior cilantro, cashew nut, green pea baked in clay pot.

Yelp
Sad to say but a little disappointed with tonight's dinner. Arrived for our 5 pm reservation only to find a dark unlocked restaurant But the best thing was we were able to meet the chef! Who greeted us, took our order and delivered our food. He also guaranteed that all the food served would be gluten free for our guest. He was the best. The food was a bit disappointing....starting with the water served at the table. The water tasted like disinfectant. Which when i did speak to the waitress, admitted that the staff was working on the disinfectant concentration so happily corrected the issue. My favorite tea leaf salad was so disappointing, tasteless and bland. Then the pea appetizer was so hard, i was afraid i might crack a tooth...so different from the past fluffy delicious puff pea confection. Different from the undercooked Brussel sprouts. Some dishes were ok like the fish curry, & coconut noodles with chicken. But there were some definite winners, like the fish soup & kebat. Maybe they had a bad night....

Roya J.

Yelp
Great spot for Burmese food. They have a special going when we went and our group of 10 enjoyed everything. Delicious food, plenty of space for large parties and service with a smile.

Tammy L.

Yelp
Ordered the tea leaf salad, a chicken dish and garlic noodle with tofu. I enjoyed the unique salad and the tofu was cooked perfectly crispy. Came here at opening and service was quick for a large party we had.

Brian Q.

Yelp
During my visit here, my friend said this was his favorite restaurant to go to, and I can definitely see why. We tried their samusas, potato curry, fried tofu, and garlic noodles; everything was amazing. The servers are all super nice and attentive, and the ambiance is perfect for a nice dinner. I've never had Burmese food before this, and it was a great experience, definitely recommend!

Marilyn B.

Yelp
Super nice staff! We didn't have reservations but she was able to seat us right away. This was our first time here. We love all the artwork around the restaurant. The food was great! We shared our dishes with each other and the drinks were even prettier than we expected. Loved it!

Mary W.

Yelp
First, I've dined with friends at Rangoon five or six times, and ordered takeout once. I've referred visitors to this restaurant several times. The dine-in experience has been wonderful: attentive, but not obsequious, servers, delicious food, and reasonable prices. The takeout dinner was disastrous, and couldn't have occurred at a worse time. I couldn't get reservations on February 14, Valentine's Day. We placed a carryout order of our favorite dishes, and I arrived on time to pick it up. Two brown paper bags were on the counter. One was pristine, the bag crisp and the order was stapled to it. The other bag was rumpled and lacked an order slip. The staff was harried, as expected, but the restaurant was only about 1/3 full. I captured the attention of a server, and asked if my order was ready. When she handed me the bag, I asked whether my wife had ordered three or four items. (I mentioned that it was a drag to have to return if the order was incorrect. She agreed.). She said she'd check. She returned a few minutes later and confirmed the order. I thanked her and left. Imagine our shock upon opening the bag at home--no more than 15 minutes away. The signature tea leaf salad was soggy and bitter; the lamb biryani was floating in grease, and the chicken curry was also very greasy. HIGHLY disappointing for an inedible $65/celebratory dinner.

Derek V.

Yelp
We had a beautiful dinner date with some friends who suggested Rangoon, which I never had on my radar, and I'm beyond grateful to have been introduced to this amazing restaurant! I'm sure to come again soon. Every dish we tried was delicious beyond my expectations. The spices, the flavors, the drinks, were all fantastic! I had to finish every single bite despite how full I was. I especially loved my Burmese Curry with Potatoes and Lamb. That meat was so tender and juicy, I could die! If you're a drinker, I'd highly recommend their Smoke on the Beach with Tequila and Mezcal. Smoky, salty, with a hint of sweetness. I was very happy with it. Our server was also really nice and friendly, joked around with us. He really made sure we were all satisfied and happy throughout our time there.

Katherine A.

Yelp
Rangoon features Burmese cuisine. The food has a wonderful assortment of flavors and textures. I took my daughter for lunch as it is her favorite restaurant. It was a meal that I will keep in my culinary memory bank. The Tea Leaf Salad is exquisite, large and sharable or makes a meal in itself. Finely chopped romaine is paired with peanut, soy nuts, sesame seeds, garlic chips, tomatoes and more. The salad is tossed in a perfect vinaigrette that is not too sweet. The Crispy Tofu filled with salad is an amazing and unique app. A chunk of fried tofu has a pocket filled with a tasty slaw topped with crispy fried onion. This app is easily shared. There are four large pieces. Delicious. The Chili Chicken is fantastic, filled with flavor. This spicy dish is filled with chicken, thinly sliced jalapeños, ginger rods, crispy garlic flakes. The flavors are complex and wonderful. By far my favorite dish if you like spicy. Easily sharable. The Shrimp and Eggplant Curry was filled with large shrimp and lots of fresh eggplant. Unfortunately there was no flavor. I did not taste curry at all. The portion was generous. The platha (bread) is incredible. It is an amazing flaky flatbread. Worth the calories. The jasmine rice is delicious. Colorful rice blended with raisins and a number of spices. Wonderful. The food is 5+ stars. What a talented chef! So why a 4 star review? The bathroom was filthy. We were the first patrons of the day and I wanted to wash hands. There were paper towels on the floor. The door was dirty. There was no excuse as we were first patrons. The tables are quite close, so close it is difficult to have a conversation. We heard everything from adjacent tables. Finally, the table was sticky. A five star review must have clean tables. Our server was attentive. I'd come back because the food is incredible.

BJ M.

Yelp
The food, service and ambiance were amazing. Our server made suggestions based on their most popular dishes, everything she suggested exceeded our expectations. I will definitely be back very soon.

Maile N.

Yelp
The food was good. The service was abrupt and rude. I went there for a lunch a few months ago, and I remember.

Jeff M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and excellent food and service. Even the Blue Malibu made for a nice refreshing beverage with the meal.

Nikki F.

Yelp
I came here on a lunch break with a friend. I had no idea it existed and had never had Burmese food before, so I didn't know what to expect and I let him do the ordering. We were seated right away, and service was nice and quick, perfect for a quick lunch break. We got the chicken curry and garlic rice. I expected the curry to be thicker like thai curry, but it was soupy, like shoyu chicken. Still delicious. My friend warned me that it was tapas/family style, so instead of getting one thing each, we split everything. I'd love to go back and try more things, but I'd highly recommend for a quick, easy and delicious lunch stop.

Van K.

Yelp
She was craving Indian food, I'm always in the mood for Thai food, and we met in a middle for some good ol' Burmese food at Rangoon, a place that we've wanted to try for a little bit now. I get everyone's complaints about the subpar service here, it's slow even on a quiet Monday night, there's no sense of efficiency, but to be fair, there's only two servers here and they try their hardest from what we saw. We honestly loved how laxed it was, please leave us be, don't hover and we are okay with the food and the company of one another. Others, like tourists and angry folks might need a bit more customer service. Drinks: wife got a cocktail and it was beautifully presented, she stated it was tasty. Heineken for me, that came out a bit warm in a bottle, but it was fine. Food: Samusas were delicious, potato wrapped in spring roll wrapper and deep fried? Devoured. Mango salad was fresh, with unripened mangos, garlic, nuts and absolutely fresh, but just needs a little bit more dressing. Stuffed tofu needed a wet component to the dish. It was very dry, beautiful presentation though. The star of the show I say, was the snapper curry with coconut rice. Whoever cooks the curry here needs a raise pronto, it's rustic curry. It honestly reminded me of my grandmother's curry and I appreciated that. Just enough amount of spice and coconut milk, fish sauce was perfect, dried peppers were a nice touch. Will stop in for the curry in the future. The set up of the place is nice, not too loud, perfect music selection, enough space between each patron and private party section if you ever need. Chef/owner even greeted us when we came in and that was cool to us. All in all, the effort is there and we will be back to support our local shops and service staff.

Yara A.

Yelp
The food was exceptional!!! The staff are very very friendly and the drinks are dangerously good! I'm so sad I found this place the last night I'm in Hawaii, but I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Angela W.

Yelp
Food was ok, like cross bbetween Thai and Indian. Kinda rich and heavy. The fried tofu had no taste at all although it looked inviting. The "naan" bread was oily and heavy, but good. It came with a chicken curry dipping sauce which was rich and heavy. It would have been better with a yogurt dip or something to clean the pallete. There was only 1 waitress for the entire restaurant. Our food came out 1 plate at a time so we all sat there waiting for the last plate before eating. By that time it was cold. It was very loud in there couldn't have a conversation. This was a company lunch so we were in the area anyhow.

Gary E.

Yelp
Love the food, the staff are professional and friendly and their prices are very reasonable. I rate this wonderful place 5-stars.

Akemi O.

Yelp
6 minutes on hold...so long I even forgot I was on hold! Service is so hit or miss there...

Dawn Y.

Yelp
This place always has people in it and the decor looks very steam punk meets Indochine SEA so I was excited to try it. I'm not familiar with Burmese cuisine and it's not exactly mainstream so the servers are important to create the right experience. We were met, greeted and seated nicely and then as we looked through the menu, it got a little complicated. Also, I was very hungry, not a good state to order unfamiliar food. I ordered the beef pumpkin stew with Flatbread. My husband ordered the Phad Thai like noodles. We ordered drinks and water. After we got our water and the waitress left to put in our order, I remembered in my low blood sugar state I'd forgotten to order the green papaya salad. So I asked her if it was too late to add it, she said no problem. Our drinks arrived and then my stew, the bread, and noodles. No salad. She said it was coming up. Halfway through, still no salad. At this point I'd discovered that half the pumpkin chunks were raw, hard as a stone while the rest of the pieces were done to perfection, the sauce was a beautiful and tasty sauce along with tender meat cubes. I was confused as to how you can mix cooked and uncooked pumpkin in the same pot. It got me wondering about the kitchen, and not in a good way. How long had my sauce been in the slowcooker? Was the beef ok to eat? Still no salad when we were basically done. So I told the server that we didn't want the salad, she said it was fine. She walks over to the kitchen and calls out, forget the salad. The cook asks, they cancelled it? She says "yes". We then wait a very long time to get our bill. The bill comes with just a total. No itemized receipt. I didn't know this was legal. So we ask, did you take off the salad? She replies, I think so. The total seems very high for what we ordered so I ask her to tell us what the charges were to bring it to that total. She says she needs to go and double check. She walks back and says the salad you ordered and then didn't want was on there. She was not as friendly as when we first walked in. I was kind of speechless. Are they that dishonest? I said, well, we waited and asked about it and you told us 3 times it was coming. A salad. Nothing to cook, but I can see it might have gotten out of sequence since we added it to our initial order but you said it was ok. I also asked if you would take it off our bill since we were finished eating and it still hadn't come out. We left a 15% tip but I had an uneasy feeling in my stomach. It was like it was our fault we didn't get our food and then they try to charge us with a bill with only the total. I've never seen this before, do other restaurants just give you a slip with the total and expect you to pay and tip? If it was just the hard pumpkin pieces, I think I would give a solid 3 stars close to 4. But this is a dubious 3 stars and the experience raised more questions than comfort. I will try it again and see if the food and service are better and indicative of their true score.

Martha T.

Yelp
their salt and pepper calamari was the best I ever had, our server gave us a sauce to go with it that it usually doesn't come with - it's the same sauce for the garlic noodles - and it was a good combo. it has some heat to it with the jalapeños but ... was amazingggggg!! all the food was awesome that we tried - will come back. their water had a little aftertaste but I feel like that's nothing new with downtown chinatown restaurants lol ambiance was cute - used to go to the previous restaurant in the same spot and gave me some nostalgia- perfect for a lunch date with other half, friends, or family!

Tania L.

Yelp
Service is a bit like short order. I get the hustle but you still need to give full attention for the duration. We feel your stress, too.. been here a few times and the only time we got appropriate service was when they were slow, so I get the hectic nature of the dinner rush. Food is really good! Probably only ate 8 things on the menu but all were really good! Prices are especially reasonable. Portion sizes are healthy - to share, or maybe if you're really hungry. Ambiance during their dinner service is quite loud and energetic but you can still hear the people you're with without having to yell at each other lol. Gonna keep going back!

Lidia L.

Yelp
Burmese cuisine is very flavorful, and I love that I can order tea leaf salads, mango salad and varieties of curry here. However, the service needs to be improved. On one occasion, I got a plate of burmese curry with cold pieces of lamb... On another occasion, our group of 4 got drinks from the bar only when we were finishing main dishes. It might be better to avoid busy hours to save yourself from disappointment!

Yelp
The best way to enjoy this place is family style with multiple entrees. I like ordering the Rangoon Tea Leaf Salad, Samosa, chili chicken or the basil chicken and the garlic noodles or the pan fried noodles. The drinks here are craft quality and made to perfection every time. I always leave with a belly full and happy mind.

Yelp
Food here was good. Not sure if it's authentic Burmese flavor but we had a wonderful curry dish and eggplant/tofu dish. I enjoyed the Basil Eggplant which had fresh basil, tofu, bell pepper, carrot, ginger, onion, chili. It was well balanced. The Nan Gyi Thoke, rice noodles with coconut, egg, coriander, lemon topped with crunchy wonton strips was also tasty. It has a rich curry broth as a base. The interior of the restaurant is interesting. It tried its best to feel like natural Burmese setting. Perhaps the table that was cleaned with made it very sticky. The server we had was helpful and attentive. However we felt rushed to pay the bill when the lady server who came over with the potable machine. And she was hovering over us while we calculated the tip. We felt very uncomfortable about it.

Yelp
Wow this was so bad. The place was pretty busy and there was obviously not enough staff, so we waited for like 45 minutes for our food. When our dishes came out, they were stone cold. The paratha was ok and the curry dipping sauce was good. However, the fish curry was terrible, lacked seasoning, tasted super fishy in a bad way, the fish was super bony and tough (completely overcooked cheap fish). The Shen noodles were a gluey mess because it'd been sitting out so long, and it had no seasoning.

Yelp
First time trying Burmese food and this place knocked my socks off! Highly recommend the whole fish and the platha with curry dip. The platha bread is super flakey like something you'd get from a high end bakery and the curry was so delicious the table ate it so quickly. One friend mopped up every drop from the bowl. The whole fish was packed with flavor. I brought a small piece home for my son and he wished he had more. We will definitely return. The lamb in the biryani was so soft as were the morsels of chicken in the curries. I got the coconut curry and the house curry. My husband and son liked the house curry better. I thought both were nice and glad that I ordered them with chicken. I highly recommend the Brussel sprouts. It comes with salted fish or pork belly. We paid an up charge for both and I do not regret it. Perfectly cooked, even my husband ate it and he usually doesn't like Brussel sprouts. We really enjoyed the coconut ice cream and house made lemonade too.

Yelp
I first visited with my boyfriend, and it blew us away. We returned with a larger group to try more dishes. Service: Average. The servers were attentive--nothing remarkable, but nothing to complain about. Food: A+. The Rangoon tea leaf salad had the perfect crunch. The crispy tofu was interesting and pretty good, but not a must-have. The biryani, especially the beef, stole the show--absolutely delicious. easy 5, price is also fair

Yelp
Came here New Year's Eve with friends. Was initially worried about service due to other reviews and it did take a while for someone to take our order (about 20min) BUT it was New Year's Eve and was only 2 servers + someone making drinks that we could see. Will say that the food made up for the wait! Everything we ordered was delish and the food & drinks did come out very promptly once we'd ordered. Would recommend

Yelp
We were walking and seen this restaurant and decided to give it a try. It's a nice restaurant with a good amount of tables. It was kind of busy, we didn't have to wait. The server was nice. The food was delicious. Mango salad was light & refreshing, I liked that I could taste everything. The calamari with the peppers was my favorite. The lamb biryani & samusa was tasty & soft. We will definitely come back.

Yelp
A confluence of flavors from South East Asia, India and China coalescing into a happy and delicious meal. Flavors of curry, cardamom, allspice, fish sauce and turmeric are sprinkled throughout the dishes. We started with the BURMESE SAMUSA Hand wrapped with potato, onion, mint leaf, green pea, spices. Delicious interior. Potatoes were soft with a slight pungent onion flavor. The skin were super crispy and thinner than the Indian Samusa and a bit on the oily side. Loved the spicy garlic dipping sauce with a hint of sweetness. PLATHA & CURRY DIP Multi-layer buttery bread similar to naan bread except it's much thinner and instead of baked in a hot oven, the platha is pan fried. Served with coconut chicken. Another great starter. The multi - layer bread were thin, flaky and addictive. The curry coconut chicken dipping sauce was very coconut milk forward and could've been a bit thicker. KACHIN WHOLE FISH Bone in branzino marinated with Kachin traditional herbs. Steamed in banana leaf, chill, garlic, black pepper, prickly ash with vegetable. My fave dish of the meal. Super moist and flavorful with pronounced citrus and garlic. BIRYANI with Lamb Basmati rice, spices, light butter, raisins, tomato, mint, fried onion, cilantro, cashew nut, green pea baked in clay pot encased in thin buttery plates bread. An ideal family style rice dish. Fluffy ,nutty rice with fragrance of cardamon and cinnamon. I'm a lamb fan but here it was rather gamy. Although very tender. There are also options for chicken, beef or vegetables. The platha bread made for good little tortilla like wraps. RANGOON TEA LEAF SALAD Mixture of cabbage, fish sauce, garlic chip, beans, peanut, garlic, pillow split pea, green split pea sesame seed, sunflower seed, tomato, jalapeño, lime. The shredded cabbage got lost in the abundance of peanuts/seeds and made this salad into more of a nut salad dressed in fish sauce. Hence very crunchy in texture with pungent flavors of fermented tea and fish sauce. Good salad but a bit on the salty side for me. Next time I would ask for less fish sauce. BASIL CHICKEN Stir-fried with fresh basil, garlic, bell pepper, carrot, onion, ginger, sweet sauce. A good dish with rice but the least distinctive Burmese dish of the meal. I couldn't help but think that it tasted like any other Chinese stir fried chicken dish. Overall a very enjoyable meal that holds true to its Burmese roots. The room had a chic vibe with elegant dark wood. Excellent service and the food came out timely. There's municipal parking on Bethel St just one block away. Happy eating!!

Yelp
My husband and I were visiting his family on Oahu and met up with a local friend to dine here. Our friend usually orders the tea leaf salad as takeout and since I'm Burmese, asked us to try this place out for its authenticity and taste. We were seated right away at opening on a weekday. We ordered 7 dishes: tea leaf salad, platha with curry, Mo Hin Ga (fish chowder), noodle coconut soup, traditional Burmese beef curry, chicken biryani, and Burmese Indian rice. Tea leaf salad: 4 stars for taste & 3.5 for authenticity. It could use less lettuce and more tea leaf and chili. Platha w curry: 5 stars. The platha was perfection. Beautifully toasted, crispy and fluffy. Better than the curry dip itself. Mo Hin Ga (fish chowder): 4 stars. Tasty, accurately prepared. However, on the salty side and could use more fish. Portion was on the smaller side too for the price it's listed. Noodle coconut soup: I can't really rate this as I usually don't eat this dish but it was tasty, just on the salty side similar to the fish chowder. Portion was small too. My husband liked this dish and he's not even a coconut fan. Burmese beef curry: 5 stars. This was so delicious and reminded me of how my late Pay Pay (Dad) would cook this. The beef was so tender and the curry was great, too. I hope this dish is consistently prepared to this tasting so that everyone can enjoy what we enjoyed on this day! Chicken Biryani: I wish I tried more of this but was so full already. From what I remember, it was very good and I'd order it again just so I can better rate this. Burmese Indian side rice: 2.5 stars. We ordered this to eat w the Burmese beef curry. It was $10 and the dish was so small. It wasn't warm and was on the dry side. We won't order this again if we return. All in all, the dishes were tasty and many worth trying again. Next time we'll probably try more of the noodle dishes like the nan gyi thoke or the shan noodle. FYI- the dishes are small and could be shared if you and your party want to try several dishes. Could also be a personal dish. Service: We were not impressed. The waitress was cordial and attentive but maybe it's a cultural barrier (she seemed to be from Europe?). When my friend handed her credit card for payment while simultaneously asking for the check, the waitress seemed annoyed or bothered and rudely said "don't do that, I will bring the blah blah blah to you." We didn't understand why she snapped as we were a positive, polite and friendly group of 3. All we did was ask for the check. Then 5 mins later she brought over the portable card slider and took our payment. We were dumbfounded why she acted the way she did. I think maybe she was not having the best of day so I'd like to hope she doesn't treat someone else like this. Otherwise she knew the dishes well and I am sure is an asset to the establishment. I got photos of a few dishes. Forgot to snap the rest.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of Burma Superstar and I really wanted to like this place... I HAVE had some lovely dishes here in the past. Yesterday wasn't one of those times. I ordered "carry out" and I was so hungry I opened my salad and rice, the minute I sat in my car. My coconut rice was barely lukewarm. Definitely nowhere near hot, but had good flavor. My Ginger Salad was a disappointment. Although I've never ordered this dish and wasn't sure what to expect, the salad was doused with some sort of "dressing", more like oil. I asked the server what the dressing was and she said she didn't know ‍ There was a lot of ginger, a lot of it I couldn't chew through. Tiny amount of lettuce. Lots of peanuts, split peas and I think garbanzo beans. Bean sprouts & small sprouts. I found 4 small tomatoes and maybe 3 pieces of garlic. All in all it was "okay" but the dressing was super heavy and seemed like it was nothing but oil? I'm glad I ate what I could right away! This would have been a soggy mess when I got home. I thought all establishments add dressing on the side for carry out orders? I supposed I should have been the one to inquire? My husband ordered the Chili Chicken and said his had good flavor. We ordered: Chili chicken Ginger salad Side jasmine rice Side coconut rice Total: $47.85

Yelp
Customer service could be improved a lot more. The passive aggressive employee there could use some counseling how to greet guests. We were immediately seated and had started a conversation between us and the server came and interrupted very abruptly dropping (literally dropped) menus in front of us and water in an unfriendly unwelcoming manner. We come here often and the food is great, but it doesn't taste as good when employees don't make us feel like they want our business. Luckily that obnoxiously rude employee was not our server! We got our usual server who knows how to do her job and well.

Yelp
This spot is great for groups (lots of shareable dishes), but the quality has really gone downhill in the past few months. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants! Went recently and the portions were considerably smaller - the tea leaf salad was 1/3 of what it used to be. Really disappointing to see as the prices seem to have gone up and (maybe this is biased), the food was not as impressive. Saw a few reviews mention bad service - would generally agree here, but the food quality + portion sizing was more of a detractor for me.

Yelp
Made a reservation for a Saturday night at 7pm, walked in and sat right away and they didn't even ask for the reservation. Usually the place is packed, we got a large table for 6 of us plenty of room, food is amazing as always, the drinks were surprisingly very good. The mai tai made it on the top 3 list for my family's trip, strong and not sweet!

Yelp
This is my 2nd time coming to this place and tbh, the only reason why we came here was because my work team wanted to and I was treating. Everything was "good" not "great" but it all went "bad" for me when our server "Makayla" cashed us out. She was very nice during service and even when she dropped the check. But it all changed when she asked if I wanted a copy of the receipt, I replied yes... then, when she looked at my copy of the receipt, she shook her head, rolled her eyes, literally dropped the receipt on our table and walked away. Not a thank you or anything! My team thought that was a little weird that she would just drop the receipt like that. BUT I was the only one facing her and saw her facial expressions! I worked in food service before and I would be stoked for a 15% tip! Hell any tip! I gave her a 15+% tip!! And our check was $33 per person! I've seen this on social media where servers get upset at less than 20%. Never thought I'd experience it. What has this world come to? Well that ruined my experience and I will not ever go back there. Neither will my team... just goes to show that staff can really hurt a business...

Yelp
What the heck -- 5 stars! Had the absolute pleasure of dining at Rangoon Burmese Kitchen in downtown Honolulu, and let me just say, it was an experience to remember. Decided to go with the Rangoon Tea Leaf Salad and the beef biryani, and boy, did those dishes impress. The biryani, oh the biryani! It wasn't just a meal; it was a show. Covered in puff pastry right up until it's served at your table, the unveiling is like a culinary magic trick. The aroma of spices that hit you is unforgettable, making it my top pick without a doubt. And the tea leaf salad? The perfect counterpart with its fresh, vibrant flavors that wake your palate up without overwhelming it. The vibe of the place strikes this really cool balance between modern and traditional, which just adds to the whole experience. Super clean and inviting. As for the service, while they could maybe check in a tad more, they were genuinely nice and super accommodating when they did. Price-wise, we're talking bang for your buck. The portions are generous to the point where we had a decent amount of biryani left for lunch the next day
