Best Cheap Restaurants in Austin for Affordable Dining | Eater Austin

"This Dawson food truck is all about serving modern, affordable Indian dishes in bowl form. Diners can dig into bowls of dal, the tikka, and the kofta korma meals for around $12, and if you have more money to spend, spring for its samosas. These delightful spiced potato pastries are served with mint and chutney and come in orders of three ($8-$9) or six ($14). Takeout orders can be placed online, and there is outdoor dining." - Erin Russell

Samosa chat was good and tasty. Not much Indian options. There was no Indian TEA. It’s a food truck. Looked clean and neat from outside. There are seating arrangements in the grocer. There are parking spots available too. Need to order in the grocer store or from the app. I felt Little bit over priced.

Best fries in ATX, hands down. Spicy, crispy, HOT and with Five Guys portions. Cannot stress how fresh and hot this food is. Literally burned my mouth a full 15 min after getting our order and sitting down. Very tasty classics (tikka + butter chicken) and several 10/10s besides: chicken 65, kofta korma, and naan. We went back the next night because I felt like I hadn’t left a big enough tip the day before. The owners were super sweet, accommodating, and kind. Support them!

Google
My wife ordered a chicken 65. She thought it was off and later got a bad case of food poisoning. No proof if was from eating here, but everything else we ate had been home-cooked. The food looked like it was made with a high amount of red food coloring. If it weren't for the food poisoning I would have given it 3 stars. The food was otherwise mid. The location is convenient, large quantity of food and relatively fast service. Also not so pricy. PS, this is not a dine-in establishment, but a food truck.

Google
Unremarkable and uninspired food taste wise. The actual truck looks closed but you can order inside the store which just seems a bit confusing and then collect food at truck window. Overpriced for very basic rice and curry combo. Naan is frozen and reheated just before serving, giving it a chewy texture. Parking can be a bit tricky and limited seats available so plan accordingly.

Google
Just learned that this Indian food truck has breakfast tacos too and they are delicious! Great quality ingredients and they pack a lot in one taco. Right next to the cork and brew market which also serves good coffee drinks. The samosa chaat is another favorite from their menu - try it, you won’t be disappointed!

Danielle Murray

Google
Our favorite Indian take out - interesting dishes (love the samosa chaat bowl), good portions, lots of vegetarian options. Such a gem!

Google
First time eating here, you order in the Cork&Brew market at the counter. Great customer service, QR code scan to see full menu on truck right outside. Pick up food at truck when you are texted. I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken burger with seasoned fries. The fries were amazing, a little spicy and the burger was great! Will definitely come again soon.

Google
Excellent Indian for Austin. Grab from great selection of beers and wines at Cork and Brew, order up some Indian from RAS, and it's a great casual dining experience.

Yelp
How have I lived so close by and taken 5 years to discover the best Indian food in South Austin! Being Indian myself, I am quite particular about preparations such as malai kofta and find that most places skimp out on the good stuff, but not here. First, there is so much variety on the menu, including several options for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and soy-free customers. I ordered the malai kofta, which was absolutely decadent. They served 3 large kofta balls and plenty of gravy. All bowls come with rice. I can't believe they only charge $12 for this meal that can easily fill you up and satisfy. We also ordered the paneer fried rice ($10) and Gobi Manchurian. The quantities were similarly generous, preparations tasted fresh and flavorful, and prices were unbelievably reasonable. I might be addicted to this place already and can't wait to try other items, including their dosas.

Yelp
Amazing!! Delicious dosas, chicken tiki masala, and I was not expecting this but one of the best burgers in town (American burger for the kids). We will be back!

Yelp
Love this little corner market - great coffees, plenty of variety with lots of quality and variety. Fab selection of beers and wines. Make sure to grab a breakfast taco here - they are great!

Yelp
I am so glad my job is walking distance to this place! So so soooo delicious! For my first time I had the Spinach bowl and added chicken. It was simple yet so flavorful! I will definitely be coming every weekend I work!

Yelp
Love this place, and I love Cork & Brew. Cork & Brew is one of those classic Austin bodegas like Live Oak Market or Sunrise Mini-Mart or the Flag Store, though with more of a focus on craft wine than craft beer. Their selections range all the way from like, 10 year French Bordeauxs at $100/bottle to exotic, fun Basque reds at $15. Plus a decent (though not too broad) selection of beer & cider, an espresso machine, and snacks you've never dreamed of. Ras, the food truck adjacent, is the first place I feel I've been that can credibly claim to be a fusion of Indian and bar food. You'll get your tikka, sure, but the real treat is the smash burger with curry sauce. That's what you go for, and we probably do so once every couple months - it's just that good. Plus every once in a while they'll do a great special, like their "Southern fried chicken" sandwich with chutney. Their fries are among the best fries at any burger joint in town, too - just super well-seasoned and crispy.

Yelp
My GO TOO !!! The butter chicken with garlic nann is QUEEN ! Veggie samosas are always crispy and warm. Ordering is always easy and the convenience store is great to grab a drink with your food. Staff in the convenience store is always super helpful and accommodating. Store is nice, clean and AC is always running !
google avatar

Yelp
How haven't I yet reviewed Ras?! I eat this dosa maybe twice a week. It's too good. Order it. Located in the parking lot of a wonderful bodega, Ras has some of the best Indian food around.
google avatar

Eileen L.

Yelp
So delicious. The burgers are truly amazing and they also have the best fries. Perfect for when you're in the mood for great food in a chill environment.

Yelp
I just had Ras Modern Indian and it is INCREDIBLE. I had the Aloo Keema Dosa (minced lamb). It was so light but insanely delicious and flavorful. Get the Gobhi Manchurian as well. It's the best battered cauliflower I've ever tasted because of the sauces. Can't wait to try everything.

Yelp
Go inside the convenient store next to the truck to order unless you have your phone. I suppose they think they will make more sales at the store by doing that. Everything was excellent, I just thought it was extremely overpriced for the portions they served. I paid $16 for a bowl that looks like a child would eat. I know a guy on sixth Street that serves better Indian food with 2.5 times the portions for $10. If it wasn't so expensive I'd be pretty happy right about now.

Siva S.

Yelp
The was exemplerary. Food truck had the west side vibe The tikka masala was as much from the Pind as from the parks of Phily! Desi-Amreeki fusion at its best in SW Austin, probably all of Austin! God bless hermano, who toils in front of the burner come hell or high water , feeding the equally hardworking white collar citizens'! There's a store beside the shop, Cork & Brew. Great collection of food and counter culture nutrition The staff are extremely courteous and friendly! Fine example of the American Dream, which is possible, no matter where you are from, what color your skin is! The #Parls are north of $10... Welcome to Pind, Philiy, Paris, Peru and Palestine! Welcome to SW Austin Welcome to a truly global capital city destination

Yelp
I've gone here twice so far ! The chicken tikka masala is awesome, it has a slightly different taste than most chicken tikka masalas I've had, but it's really yummy. Most recently I had the fried chicken sandwich and unfortunately the chicken was very thin and hard; may have been a fluke, I'm not sure; however, the French fries were to die for ! They were loaded with Indian spices and any fries that come in a brown paper bag with grease stains, you know they're gonna be good ! Staff has always been friendly too. A solid 4/5 for me.

Julia T.

Yelp
Malai Kofta bowl. I still think about it and wonder when I am coming back to order it again. Do not wait. Just order with your choice of protein and enjoy how delicious it is.

Yelp
We stayed at an ABnB nearby so we could walk right up to it. The trailer is in the parking lot of Cork n Brew on Cumberland and Congress. We got Chicken Tikka bowl on a bed of rice which came with a side of naan. The Chicken Tikka was flavorful with a nice amount of slow-burn heat, not too spicy but it let you know it was there. Overall it was good... a little spendy at $14 for what you get, but it's not outrageous. At least the flavor made it seem ok. I got a Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich. This was interesting, A touch on the salty side, it couldn't decide if it wanted to be a real Southern-style sammy or not. The chicken was fried in a southern fashion but it came with green chutney, a slaw of some kind, and cheese. The flavor combination was interesting, but not quite there. Not Indian style and not Southern. I think they need to re-assess what they want it to be and make it one way or the other. American cheese doesn't really go on there and is odd/unnecessary. I would have LOVED if they had done an Indian-style Chicken 65 sammy on a roti or naan with some amazing Indian condiments/chutneys. OR a Southern Fried chicken coated with chicken 65 spices and a tart mango chutney as the acid punch that it needs. The fries were seasoned, with some Indian spices(?) interesting, but again, almost, but not quite there. Needed something to put it over the top. Here's my 2 cents, They should do a take on loaded fries... fries with chicken & tikka sauce garnished with cilantro. THAT would be cool. So, the bottom line is, it's good, but NOT spectacular. It's an ok value for the money but barely.

Yelp
Thee best indian food in all of Austin! Hands down!! Be sure to get the Samosa Chaat ;) and pick up a yummy beverage from the Cork a d Brew market.

Amit P.

Yelp
Amazing flavor profile. Chole bowl and Samosa bowl was da bomb! Portions are right sized for the price. Definitely coming here again n again. When you have happy smiling cooks and service - you get happy food too.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
They recommended the chicken Tikka. I may not be a connoisseur of Indian food, but that was the best chicken Tikka I've ever had. Forget south congress lines, come here for lunch.

Adair H.

Yelp
The samosa chat bowl is amaaaaaazing! Very tasty and excellent presentation. I especially loved the toppings and sauces. The market next door is great too - excellent selection of beers.

Yelp
RAS Modern Indian is a food truck that is usually parked behind Mort Subite, the Belgian beer bar on Congress Street. They offer a variety of Indian dishes that are very tasty. Our group of 6 ordered chicken and lamb rice bowls, the lamb meatballs, naan, and other dishes. The rice bowls come with your choice of 3 sauces. We tried them all. Stop by Mort Subite for a beer or cocktail and enjoy some very good Indian cuisine.

Barry D.

Yelp
Takeaway. Good quality. Had a veal dish, a lamb shank, a few vegan mains, several appetizers. Lots of different chutney's accompanied the meal. Only downer was the naans that were complimentary. All things considered, for takeaway very good. Dinner for 4 adults and 2 10-something's ran 160ish. A bit pricey, but we're not from here - Austin, TX. So cost is a bit relative. Will eat here again next time through but for dine in as everything was a bit tepid.

Yelp
Delicious! The depth of spices such as saffron and in my mind, coconut-buttery flavor in the rice makes my mouth water just thinking about it. The chicken and lamb rice bowl option with Tika sauce is mild but spiced just enough so that it is memorable and cravevable. The Samosas are filled with love (minced beef, peas and onions.)The Paneer Tacos are tangy, sweet, and feels-good-eating finger-licking-spicy that can be douse with green chutney or another amber colored sauce. The medium rare Burger is moist spiked with arugula, tomatoes, and a beautiful sauce. At an earlier visit, the garlic naan with fresh herbs( cilantro?) is best finger-licking when eaten hot or can be reheated beautifully. The Samosa Chaat is tangy, pomegranate sprinkled with spicy notes of tamarind-peppers sauce and worthy of foodie's dream. Keep up the good work Ras! We're lucky to have your food and will continue to send our business other people your way!

Yelp
Updating now that I've tried some of their other dishes, and my advice is to stick with their burgers.

Yelp
The Tikka bowl is delicious! Burger and lentil dishes are also fantastic. This place has become a regular weekend meal for us. Try it out!
google avatar

Pavithra L.

Yelp
My friend bought the tikka bowl and it was decent. Just please Please don't sell spicy chicken sandwich! Just sell what you are good at. It was the most disgusting, and most expensive chicken sandwich i've ever had. Very very thin chicken breast is fried and you barely can get a bite of chicken. If you love spicy breadcrumbs with little bit of chicken this is for you. They try mask it by shoving crazy amount of coleslaw. But it doesn't mask the failure. Just sell the rice and curry and call it a day. It was $15 and im still mad and felt cheated.

Yelp
I had the lunch at Ras Modern Indian and knew I had to come back for the breakfast tacos in the future. That future came yesterday, and that future was fantastic! I had a bacon, spiced potato, and sautéed vegetable taco that must have weighed about a pound! It was seasoned to perfection and the side sauces were out of this world. In a city obsessed with breakfast tacos, it is hard to create something unique but Ras has done it! I'm excited to return to try some of the other combinations.

Damilare W.

Yelp
This little shop, packs a punch in their Manali Smash Burger and Indian seasoned Fries! If you like spicy food, get the Manali Smash Burger. It was fresh jalapeño spicy so if that is too much for you, don't do it. My tongue was on fire and I loved it! ‍ The fries were PERFECT Pleasantly surprised they stayed crispy throughout the meal. Plan to grab "to go", unless you don't mind standing inside the Orchard & Grove shop to eat or sitting outside during the winter
google avatar

Adam F.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time yesterday. Everything we tried was awesome. Recommend getting the Samosa Chaat as an appetizer. Will be back many times.

Tara M.

Yelp
What a great experience! The Indian food from the food truck was delicious. What really wowed me though was the proprietors. So welcoming and knowledgeable. He shared what his vision is for this place - they will add a cocktail bar when they get a license (note - currently can't drink on premise) and another food truck on the other side next to two huge oak trees. It sounds amazing. I will have to come back and check it out again to see the changes!

Yelp
Love this little neighborhood trailer that opened not too long ago. Ordering can be done inside the Cork and Brew store right next to it. Food comes out fast and hot. So far we've had a few breakfast tacos, the chicken tikka masala and Samosa chaat. The breakfast tacos are on what seems to be homemade flour tortillas (you can get corn and siete as well - but we didn't). They are well stuffed and about two tacos would do for the average person. Comes with two sauces - green and red. The green is reminiscent of a creamy jalapeño but it has heat to it. The red was my favorite of the two - also having quite a bite but a nice roasted/dry ground pepper flavoring. Chicken tikka masala had a sweet yet spicy flavor and the chicken was tender and the rice perfectly cooked. While I liked the samosa - I think I'm just in general not a huge samosa chaat fan (too much other stuff going on). That being said it was good.

Yelp
Love the service. Food is great. They gave me a free small bowl of rice for our baby girl

Sarah C.

Yelp
I love this place! The food is so good and they are such wonderful people. Give them a try if you haven't already.

Alexis S.

Yelp
This place has a lot going on when you consider the beer/wine store that Ras sits right next to. You can order from inside the store (Cork & Brew Market). They have outside tables in the front of the store you can eat at. The Paneer bowl was in a creamy tiki sauce served with yellow rice. Subtle, nice seasoning with a little kick to it. The sauce was so good...we also ordered the fried chicken breast sandwich with fries and instead of using the ketchup i was dipping the fries in the tiki sauce. Speaking of...the fries and fried chicken breast had the perfect crunch... A light batter on the chicken breast, which was served with nice a mint chutney sauce on a brioche bun. Fries were seasoned with indian spices. Lastly we had their new samosa chaat...samosas with garbanzos, -maybe- a mint chutney (new item and wasn't on the menu but offered when ordering) and pomegranate seeds. The owners were great and knowledgeable re the wine/food selection. Great prices...plenty of $15 bottle offerings in there and the guy seemed to know his stuff. Took a couple of recommendations and got home and tried some and they were as described. Beer selection was more than enough too...I'm from out of town so i grabbed a couple of some of the local offerings that aren't sold in my part of TX. Lastly, they have some dessert pastries that were delicious. I took home a butter chocolate ganache type of treat. Heated it up a bit in teh microwave and dang dude, rich and dense. These guys have great taste and the place...Ras and the market next to it, was a treat to visit.

Michael P.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Tried the tikka and samosa chaat and loved them both. Flavorful and satisfying--highly recommend.

Michelle T.

Yelp
We grabbed RAS as dinner when they're behind Mort Subite today, truly delicious! The Samosas were absolutely fantastic, especially the tamarind sauce. We tried the Tikka curry rice bowl with Lamb meatballs with regular and garlic naan, all delicious. Portions are generous and service is friendly. Will absolutely have dinner here again.

Gee T.

Yelp
Delicious Indian food from a food truck next to a great little mini super market with an amazing selection of fun/unusual snacks. Got my food, sat outside with some friends and did some shopping at the same time! Very chill and casual, and the owners were awesome. Super friendly.
google avatar

Joe P.

Yelp
Food was simply AMAZING !! My only complaint is the meal did not come with Naan. I am not sure if that was by design or accident. That being said, still the best tasting Indian food I have ever had !

Mahesh S.

Yelp
Dal Bukhara with meat ball . Samosa chat Masala fries It cannot go wrong if you try this .

Luc L.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic food. Today I had the samosa chat and not only is it very filling, but also delicious. The spices are balanced and the pomegranate seeds give an amazing pop if color and flavor. If you're drinking inside Mort Subite, he will even bring the food to you!
